What we heard so far is all the remaining specs are the same. We will soon see though.

cool, is there likely to be an option for a i7 dual core with 4 ram slots?
blueray is pointless to me but lots of ram and a cpu with VT-d extensions would be very cool anf my dell m6500 isnt cutting it. -
Has anyone gone looking for a messenger style bag for the G73? I looked around on ebags.com and found this: http://www.ebags.com/slappa/ballistix_aura_shoulder_bag/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=116393
Thoughts? -
Hmm. Since I'm getting a free backpack with the laptop, I don't think I'm going to spend extra money on another backpack.
-
Yeah no need to buy another backpack since Asus backpacks are usually pretty cool already. And if the backpack damages the laptop, you can always claim it I suppose!
-
Justin do you know if Blu-Ray playback software will be included in the G73-A1?
-
I have that bag and it's big. Fits the M17x plus extra room. G73 should be no issue. With that said I paid about $100 new directly from slappa. That price is way too high.
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
Yes it is included stock with the laptop.
-
Did you find this out on the website or in an e-mail update? I'd be interested to know my ETA as well.
-
The website will not tell you when your laptop is going to be shipped, you have to email Ken to find out when your ETA is.
-
Thanks. I agree with your signature, waiting is the hardest part. Did you make it in on the first shipment?
-
Thanks for the quick reply. I was almost considering removing the blu-ray option since I found out the software to do playback was $100!
-
Yes, I did.
As you can see it in my signature, I pre-ordered on Jan 2nd.
That's pretty early, right?
I've been waiting for almost a month now.
When I pre-ordered this lappy, there was no information about the GPU nor how the g73jh looks like.
Right now I don't regret pre-ordering G73jh. -
I understand I get a free backpack with it but I want a messenger style bag for commuting to work.

So, they're exactly the same besides the ODD?
And isn't it A1 and A2?
And I think 20.1lbs is a typo...earlier info said it was around 8lbs.
Okay, I'm done now.
So excited for mine. Finally upgrading from my single 2.4ghz CPU, GeForce 6800, unknown RAM piece of crap desktop. -
Haha don't get too hyped up when games run like a hot knife through butter.
-
Can anyone answer the original question "How long after being released does it usually take before something like this comes to a retail store like Best Buy?"? I don't have the cash to buy something like this, but I do have enough credit at BB...
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
20.1 pounds is the shipping weight including the laptop, AC Adapter, Backpack, Mouse, accessories and shipping materials...not just the laptop alone. -

babyhemi, you are showing an 'X1' model, and an 'X2'..... are you talking about NewEgg sales here? Or did you mean 'A1' and 'A2' models? Also, shouldn't that be 2X 500GB HDD's?

Also notice the DDR2 800MHz DRAM instead of DDR3/1066.
The X1 and X2 are your clue that these are the watered down versions that will probably be in the big box stores.
These specs are not the high end version offered by the Channel resellers. -
BTW,hate to be off topic and I don't know if it has been said ,but the stealth bomber that the G73 is based off of is the Lockheed F-117A,Aptly nicknamed "NightHawk",the USAF's remaining supply of 57(one crash, one shot down) of them were retired in 08,replaced by the F-22 Raptor Superfighter... strangely in place of scraping them like any other plane...they Took the wings off them and stuffed them in a number of hangers in Tonopah, Nevada. Then they locked them shut ,haven't been opened since...
Also...-=$tR|k3r=-...You are aware that the F-117A is an Single seater..Right?
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah, I naturally assumed the DDR listing was a typo, since all G73's will be DDR3. I have also heard 'big-box' vendors, such as BB and the EGG will not see these for some time, as the 'Channel' resellers are more exclusive this go-round. Your thought on this Donald?
Thanks
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
And your point..... I mean, are you saying she can not sit in my lap, when operating the G73JH? I'll be DARNED!
-
No,I was laughing about your G73h crew member tag,Pilot would be more correct...and cooler.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
they have a ground crew too, lol

My check cleared on Janurary 21 with gentech, you guys think ill make the first shippment? lol i doubt it
-
"RAM: 8G DDR3:4 x SODIMM Sockets; DDR2 800MHz DRAM support;" - I'm reading this as it will support DDR2 800MHz DRAM, but comes w/ 8G of DDR3 in 4 sockets...
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Just so you know, my thinking was to promote 'Team' spirit, especially since we actually have so many active duty military members here. Scook9 hit the nail on the head...... the glory doesn't go to the pilots only, but to all their support crews as well. I think that's 'cooler'!
It's a mantra!
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
NOPE! Just DDR3..... typo error!
-
hi, just curious why you pay before the stocks are ready to ship?
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
To get into line.... so you can get one as soon as possible. They are being Pre-Sold!
-
blackbeltjones45 Notebook Enthusiast
plus its when they offered the 3% discount if you payed up front
-
No...........
-
not really. You get 3% discount as long as you pay via bankwire
-
Did you hear that rumor from a "channel" reseller?
I think their just yanking your chain. The G series has been very popular at BB, and since Asus is in the money making business, I wouldn't doubt that BB will get some form of the G73. Maybe a G73 with a i5? Hey what the heck as long as it has the 5870
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
I did not say BB or the EGG won't get them..... only that it may be a while after the channel sellers get them.
We shall see I guess........
-
Will the ghetto version with the i5 have switchable graphics? I'm assuming it will since g73 uses the hm55 chipset. If it does and costs $1000 with a 900p screen, it would have a much better battery life and be very affordable. I know I'd be tempted to buy it as a secondary notebook.
-
As far as the BB model goes, I think you could easily take out a hard drive, swap the bluray for a dvdrw, take out 2 gigs of ram and lower the resolution on this thing. It would still be a beast, and the saving would have to be pretty substantial.
-
Im sure at somepoint BB will get there own version ... Its probably a lack of 5870s that will put that idea on hold for abit... Cant think of any machine Asus has made recently that they didnt get except for the W90
...

What you saw in my post was exacty what was sent by the Asus reseller division. Notice too I said these are basic models...

Hmmmmm, well then I assume those 'basic' X1 & X2 models are spec'ed for NewEgg sales then.
Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
so....why would newegg only stock the lower end versions?
-
Yup 2 dimm slots (that's all I'd really need), 900p display (as long as it doesn't suck), dvdrw, cut down hm55 chipset (likely won't accept i7 quad chips), i5 cpu with switchable graphics + Ati 5870 for $900 + tax. That would be a killer machine with an awesome battery life. Perfect for taking on a trip with you. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
so people can afford it and will buy it
they sold the majority of the W90s on the market I am guessing, and those only had T9600s or Q9000s -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Because that is all that ASUS gives them.
The configuration that you see in the big box stores is always different from what you can buy from a Channel reseller in various ways, including a different warranty. -
I have two questions, are the terms system integrator and channel reseller the same thing? Also, in what way are the configurations different between big box stores and resellers, if you are allowed to say?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
A system integrator is one that builds up the shell or modifies a laptop from the ODM. Some Channel resellers are system integrators, and some just sell pre-built laptops, or laptops built by another company.
For example, Powernotebooks.com is a reseller of Sager laptops, and a system integrator of PowerPro laptops and modified ASUS laptops.
You would have to compare the standard specifications, including the warranties, of existing models between Channel resellers and big box stores. As for new models we would just have to wait to see what the differences are. In general, the Channel resellers get the better configurations and warranties. -
Ok thanks that explains it pretty well. Perhaps this is a question for a business person, but I am still curious. I know Asus doesn't sell directly to the public, but why do companies like Sager go through another level of reseller to distribute their laptops when they already have their own website and everything? Since they modify and sell Clevos wouldn't it just lower their margins to not sell directly to end-consumers?
On a G73-related note, the German Amazon site has the G73 available for pre-order. The model numbers are a bit weird though instead of A1 they are TZ037V and TZ038V, no idea what it means though.

Sager uses resellers because we bring them much more volume than they could do themselves.
We also add value to the high end Sager product with our 2nd & 3rd year labor warranty, and our Lifetime 24/7 DOMESTIC Support where they only provide West Coast business hours support Monday through Friday. In addition, we offer them with NO OS standard, and offer a 3% cash discount. Sager offers neither of these options.
