Gateway extended warrenty cashed me out after four times trying to fix a mobo problem, the bios resets after complete power disconect and reboot. Since I was running Riad 0, it caused issues. The cool thing is after rebate, I got a G73JW-A1 ans $50.00 in my pocketand I plan on using the good old P-171x fx for a media center/back pc

The G73JW came with a crap load of, well crap, after decrapulating it, and installing things, it seems fast, but the startup time needs some work (or I am just used to a SSD) I love the Asus UI, I like the "Twin Turbo" button I am sure if it makes a diffrence, or what it does. And I like the Nvidia 460 GTX. Looks great, nice cooling.
One more thing, 6 DVD's needed for the recovery??? Really, I hope the OS is part of that, no OS disk shipped, but that's is like most company's now.

Flynnaz - its funny seeing you here, since i remember ya from the Gateway forum. My 6831FX just continued to crap out on me (literally, falling apart), and cam up with the BB verzion of the JH as the best replacement (that i could actually afford). Trouble is though, this touchpad is marking me really start to regret this laptop.........

Divine,
the good old Gateway group back again, it's funny, we still have the same tastes on laptops
The touch pad seems better than my M17X, but I ready don't use it that much. I do not understand the recover software. I burned 6 DVD's, and do not know how to use them. I tried to use them on bootup, nothing, within Windows, no executable? Why can't they make this dummy poof, me being the dummy
. I just want a OS disk, and apps, does Asus have a way to burn those?
-
that is cool as hell there!!
yeah, i dont do the dvd thing. i just store it on another hard drive. takes like 20 minutes to have it back up and running
im still getting use to the fact of one bar on mine...wish it were two buttons instead. -
I just got through rebuilding my Gateway FX, it works
, bunch of dummys, I told everyone it was the mobo, now I have a G73 becuase of it
-
Those 6 DVDs are just restoration images. If you boot from disk 1 it will start the recovery process which will take the system back to it's original state. Also, they can only be used to recover to the same size disk as the original drive. There's a crazy convoluted way around this if you understand drive geometry and boot from linux to correct the restored partition but it's easier to just say it's not possible.
If you want to migrate to a 750GB 7200 rpm drive you'd be better off cloning your working system. I've only ever used them to run tests or help verify something works @ stock.

I tried to boot from Disk one, but I guess I needed to set it in the Bios first, anyways, good to know

I just hope my Asus (touchpad aside) holds up better than the gateway. Literally, the heat from the system was making the plastic brittle and pieces breaking everywhere. Of course, this touchpad can really make me nuts, so i may wind up accidentally breaking this laptop....

@flynnaz
1) Welcome to the Dark Side of Notebook Technology
2) I had 2 Gateways
P-6860FX > traded for a Yamaha RX-V863 receiver
P-7805u FX > Mom has it now
3) Use a proper backup system. Too many horror stories about failed last image disc. -
you had gateways too chasity...
i must admit..they were very fun to get ones feet wet with. -
I am not too worried, I have Win7, and Asus's site seems to have all the drivers.I just thought I could make a os, and app disks, oh well.

You may use Chastity's Driver and Application Reference for G73/53 link on her sig. She has compiled updated Asus Applications in that link and those are the real deal. The ones found on Asus page are not all updated and some of those according to some users post aren't working at all. -
They were great laptops for their time, but even time ends great things..
I do wonder if people had similar build issues as i did... -
tis is true.

I have that in my favs
