Hello, David! Thank you for posting this. I would like to ask you if you disassemble your laptop completely. If so, do you remember how the Infrared Receiver is mounted there? Judging from photos it seems like the receiver is soldered directly to the motherboard. Is this true?

I basically not getting any signs that my infrared in G51 is receiving any signals. If IR module is plugged in somehow, then it could have unplugged and this is why it cannot see anything. I've tried many programs and it seems that IR is completely blind.

I'm desperate trying to get to the bottom of it. Please, help me.

If you didn't actually take laptop apart or don't remember how IR was mounted, do you think there is a way to get to that module without taking of the heat pipes and cooler assembly?

Nevermind, I took laptop apart myself (couldn't wait). There is no IR photo-diode behind the semitransparent IR window.

Once you get the screw out (labeled K) you can use a guitar pick to lift the tabs to get the keyboard out. If you use a metal tool you'll scratch the black paint.

Have you OC'd your FSB by chance? Some of my keys stopped working when my computer BSOD'd from an OC.

I have to ask about the Turbo Memory slot.
Can anyone confirm that it exists on all G50V?

I don't know for sure. I've been looking for it on my G50vt and the only place that I can think of where it'd be (since it's unclear in the disassembly slot) is by the bottom left foot pad thing by the GPU. I can't see there though. I've partially disassembled my laptop but not to that point.

Oh. I didn't see it, but perhaps it is there. The keyboard is just two screws and some clips, so if you're bored it's a fairly safe procedure. Just don't rip the cable out.

    Hey,

Sorry if this isn't the most appropriate place to post my question, but does anyone know if the headphone jack is connected straight to the motherboard? If so is it very easy to replace?

I bent mine today and am deciding whether to disassemble or just buy a USB soundcard...

    Cheers,

    Felix

Used the guide to add AS5 to the GTX260 and add a P8700 to my G51. What a great thread, thankyou David.

Also hoping to disable the silly lid lighting too and noticed these two posts went unanswered... Anyone still visiting here care to offer a comment please?

I visit everytime something is written but I haven't opened my G50 enough to be of help. I can only say that I'm guessing it would be ok to pull the cables to the different lights on the lid.

Little off topic, but please help. My asus g50vt-x5 lcd is working rather strange, it shows some letters with a red line around, and sometimes when the picture is dark(black) the screen has horizontal green lines(but only a few).
Even when writing this the letters "logged in as ..." are fine, but tabs and this box has the red lining.
I have tried connecting another monitor via vga port and it displays everything without any problems. Sometimes when I close the lid it goes away, but then it usually appears again.

I know it is probably the lcd, but any idea if anything else could be the problem: video drivers(win 7 ultimate x64), inverter, graphic card...

    Please help!!!

I'm sorry but I don't know what the problem is.
If it changes when you tilt the screen around you could try to open up the computer and move the LCD cable and poke on the socket to see if there are any changes on the screen.

If it works good after the computer wakes up from sleep it could be heat related and something could be getting warm and then start to misfire. In that case that would mean that it would be impossible to play a 3D game without overheating something and getting graphic issues.
Normally weird things happen when the memory on the graphic card is too hot but this is probably something else.

Last thing I would expect it could be is some memory that has been previously overheated and now is weird. Recall anything like that?

I'm trying to remove and replace my keyboard using your guide, but from looking at your thread it looks like I need to remove two screws. Which two screws would this be? It wasn't specified. Thanks.

Edit: I see where it specifies one screw, but that screw has been missing from my laptop since the last time I sent it in to Asus (good job guys!). And I still can't seem to work the keyboard loose.

There are two screws that should be marked "K" on the bottom. One by the vent and one by the optical drive.

I had to replace the fan on my G50vt. I have arctic silver thermal compound to put on the CPU and Chipset as shown on 2-3. However, I am concerned with the chipset as there is a large grey 'pad' on the heatsink which touches the chipset, like some kind of thermal pad. Do I leave this? It is pretty thick. Thanks in advance. I apologize if this has been answered somewhere.

@KansasFF leave it if it's not disintegrated, otherwise scrape it off with a credit card and clean the surface with a cotton ball.

Won't do you any good. The thermal pad would be an insulator compared to AS5.

    Hi,
I own ASUS G50V laptop and it stop working. I it is completely dead when it is plugged in. I check and it is not power supply.

I have been told that I have bad power board or motherboard. Does anybody have similar issue with this laptop?

Or if anybody has any ideas what can be wrong with my laptop, I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Thank you.

@mamtsism what happened before your G50 died? Do any lights come on?

You can try removing the CMOS battery, it's not in a convenient location. I posted some info about that here.

I have this same problem. The visual artifacts are strange, they appear around window edges and text boxes. I cant take screenshots of it, so I am assuming the issue is with the LCD. I already checked my screen plug and it doesnt help. Flexing the screen in certain ways can change problem for better or for worse. Been thinking about disassembling the screen and checking everything carefully, but i have no idea what could be causing this? Cable was my guess =/

@Elthore the LVDS cable connection for the mobo is right under the left hinge cover. Besides that you can take the bezel off of the screen and check the cable. If it's loose at the screen end it could cause that. Otherwise it's a bad cable or a problem with the LCD.

Hi, my english is fool. but i understand.

I'm having a problem on my ASUS G50Vt-X1 when trying to install two drives in the second port, the notebook recognizes the HD but resumes soon after.
After that the hd is disabled and is no longer recognized.

Before it was working perfectly, and the error started when I decided to install another hard drive in the second door. I switched to a 160 for a 500,

I tried to uninstall my primary hard drive and install it yourself in the second door. and the same happens.

any hard drive installed in the second door is giving this error. does not recognize, and when it is recognized automatically restarts the laptop off the HD.

is possible that I'm having a problem on the motherboard?

The error happened mysteriously already reinstalled the bios and nothing.

@Skedar is the second hard drive recognized by the BIOS? Is it windows that won't recognize the drive, or does the BIOS not see it as well? Have you tried resetting the BIOS to user defaults? Have you tried swapping the drive positions in the bays?

Disconnect all power, make sure you're electrically grounded somehow (I usually just touch the outer metal of my power adapter while it's plugged in), and make sure you get the old paste off cleanly and apply the new paste in a way that won't make air bubbles.
There are some people who have better methods than me but I usually just put a small amount in the center and as I'm putting the heatsink back on, I wiggle it around in a circle slowly to make sure paste gets evenly spread.

Hey guys. Basically I need to replace a screw that has disappeared that connects my left hinge to the body of the laptop. I tried calling up Asus and asking them the screw size and was told they couldn't get a hold of that information. I tried taking out the screw on the right to compare the sizes and it seems to be held in by some sort of nut. So basically my two questions to anyone who might have the knowledge are:

    1. What is the size of the screw and what is the mechanism that holds it in place
    2. How far down do I have to strip my laptop to get to this and repair it?

It seems like I have to take most of the hardware out and remove the laptop's faceplate.

    Anyway, thanks.

Edit: Sorry my English is sucking, I'm pretty tired. Night time.

According to the disassembly guide it is M2.5 x 7mm

It should need no further disassembly than you have already done.

I think the hinge screw in your pic is a ground for the display/inverter. I'm not sure why it won't come out for you. I took that screw off a few times at least, without any issue. Maybe it is stripped?

The black tape may be OK as long as you remove it gently, the adhesive may be good enough.

The fan has to come out first before the GPU heatpipe and heatsink can come off.

Its more like the heatsink feels glued to the gpu

I used a hairdryer and got it ofd. I took off a thermal pad from a piece on the gpu board amd threw it out without thinking. Should i be concerned?

Yes. You should never use a hairdryer near electronics. That was a bad idea.

It was the thermal pad melting and turning into an adhesive, the way to get it off would have been to twist it from side to side a little bit. As long as your card isn't destroyed from the hairdryer, there is nothing to worry about. You can either get a new thermal pad or replace it with thick thermal paste (and a copper shim if you need). Just make sure it is making good contact and watch your temps when you put it back together.

Hey this is my first post, and I'm having trouble with the Graphic Card from my ASUS G50Vt(BestBuy).

The Graphics Card is Overheating! It's a NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GS 512MB.

I downloaded the NVIDIA sidebar gadget to monitor its temperature, and the usual reading is around 65 to 75 degrees Celsius. The problem is when I'm running any kinda game, that takes it up to 109 degrees Celsius. That started happening a couple of months ago, and the laptop is about 2 years old.

I started monitoring it when playing Call of Duty - Black Ops and Crysis 2. They started lagging after minutes of gaming. Before that, I used to play Crysis 1 with no problem. Nowadays, even playing Counter Strike or NFS Most Wanted makes it overheat!

    Any ideas, please?

    Thank you!

    Hi,

I have an ASUS G51J (MB Ver G60J) laptop and recently due to incorrect way of pluggin my external speakers, my sound card got busted. I removed the back panel to check the sound card is in-built or not and it's an external card which includes the two USB ports on the right side. Do you have any idea as to where i can purchase a sound card of the same model or any card for this particular laptop model?

    Cheers :)

Downloadable PDF Disassembly Procedure for ASUS G50V(t)

Now, we can dismantle :err: our beloved G50V's even without access to internet.

P.S: any good reseller of 15.6" CCFL lamps for less than 10 euros? I currently mount a 15.4", recycled, and I'd like to buy a proper one. Cheap, though.

    Bye, guys.

    Dear Sdierauf,

    here you go.

Anybody still working with this laptop?

I finally, after over three years of owning this laptop, broke it down to the nitty-gritty minus the LCD (since I broke the last LCD bulb I messed around with).

Curious, but will the BT-183 bluetooth module fit this? I see one on eBay and want to make sure that it fits... looks like the pins for the cable connector are the same. It would be nice to throw BT into this thing if I'm able to... the connector for it isn't doing anything, so might as well make use of it, right? (I have the G50VT-X5, which doesn't have BT out of the box.)

P.S. Anybody know what body/chassis Asus used to build this laptop? I'm very impressed with it and was wondering if there was a Clevo equivalent or something like that.

Also, wondering if anyone has attempted to back-light the keyboard. I was wondering if you could place a flat LED source behind the keyboard, but I can see that this would only provide some ambient light BEHIND the keys. I don't like the idea of fluorescent or glow-in-the-dark stickers...

I'm still using mine on a daily basis and it's working very well but I am mostly focusing on hardware, cooling and bios upgrades.

Mine has the Wifi/BT 5100 from Intel but I can't comment on the one you mentioned. I suppose a 5300 would work as well.

I have a USB side light to light the keys, I suppose one could tweak the light and have flourescent digits since they are white.
