Oh I didn't think of retailers like newegg :p
IMO it's always better to buy from resellers.

Yes. I believe Justin at Xotic may have responded to a question from someone asking if they should be worried about the price going up after it came out and he said no.

There HAVE been some slight price fluctuation on the listed re-sellers sites as far as how much they will take off if you drop the blu ray drive, how much they charge for the better thermal compound etc..., but I believe that has more to do with them going back to what they normally charge rather than raising the price of these options. At first, they all seemed to be adding incentives for us to buy from them, but now that they realize how hot this thing is turning out they know they don't have to offer those level of incentives anymore. It will sell regardless of the small deals on options.

    My 2c.

I really need to hang out in the Asus forum more. This lappy looks freakin AMAZING! I have to assume it has 3 RAM slots? I noticed that it has 6 GB of ram, awesome. Love the looks, price is amazing as always with Asus...*drools*. Can't wait to see what the 360 can do... :p

the 260m may _not_ be better.

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gtx_260m_us.html
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gts_360m_us.html

    gtx260m:
    gts360m:
change in memory is negligible, consider it a bucket brigade. also keep in mind the stock 260m is underclocked 10%, and since clocks scale fairly linearly with performance you can assume it's 10% less powerful than nvidia's spec. that would put it at 416 Gflops for the 260m vs 413 for the 360m.

the only difference will be in overclocking limits, which is 20% (600/1500/1000) over top of what asus set on my refrigerator of a 260. desktop gt200-based cards can also hit 20% on stock voltage so i assume it holds true in laptops as well.
my guess is that you'll be trading off slightly less than half the heat emission for a 20 - (96/112 * 20) = 3% loss in potential performance. most g51j's won't be able to match that oc, so temps permitting, the potential of the 360m is greater.

stock seagate st9320 rated idle is .75W, actual (by tomshardware) is .78. unless you plan on copying files the whole time on battery, you won't be nearing the 5V/1A rating ( http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=006442b3f64f9110VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD). it may as well be the difference for the additional one (or two) sticks of RAM.

going from a 9700M/t9400 g50v to an i7/gtx260 + keyboard backlights g51j is about 11W (18 vs 29) difference. the i7/gts360 will fall somewhere half way between that. i get around 1h40-1h50 of battery life on a 50Wh battery, so i would put the expected battery life at 2h-2h15.

As much as I'd love to buy from a reseller, I'm stuck buying from Newegg on this one I think. I'm waiting for the update to the G51Vx-x3a, which is only sold on Newegg, so I'm kind of stuck with that. The G51Jx at Newegg is over budget for me unfortunately. :(

    Hope not!

I pre-ordered on 1-7-10 I've watched the date go from the 20th to 29th to 5th and whats this now about the 10th?

    waiting sucks..

Btw noobie to these forums.. but not to the electric drug! Great forums guys..and gals!

I'm quite sure you will be surprised at what the 360m does. You wont humanly notice the difference, only on a score, but the temps will be better and batt life longer!
Another thing...there is no official confirmation on the 2nd hdd bay. the only person on the net to say it is exotic pc and even they said nobody will know until the get their hands on one.

As far as the amazon post...dead.. If they had one on the 7th I would by typing on it right now!

I couldn't wait. Didn't want to risk another 2 weeks or another push back on the release of the Asus G51jx. I just ordered an Alienware m15x with the i7-720QM 1333 Ram DDR3 and the 260GTX 1GB. Black with Quasar Yellow. Then upon checkout it said expected arrival 2/12/10 oh well got to choose a customized name plate with it haha. Paid $1780 with EPP.

Question right now is the TMU and ROPS are lower, akin to the GTX 260M vs. GTS 260M... cause TMU and ROPs can affect the performance pretty significantly, even more so than straight GFlops count

from 16 to 12 (or 8)? nice catch. even so, most g51j's have a hard time keeping 95c with a few going as high as 100c on asus clocks. 600 is a little more than it can handle.

edit: fixed ROP count, idk what i was thinking of this morning...

Why is the release date pushed back to mid-Feb? Damn ASUS! Unless they are considering putting a better GPU (instead of the GTS 360M) in it, I won't forgive them. Or maybe I'll, or must. Whatever. Please release it quickly! Or at least someone has a benchmark on the performance of the GTS 360M!

25 mins of furmark. the first dozen pages of the old bsod thread had some heat complaints with people approaching 100. ingame at 585/1470/950 cod4 doesn't top 85 (maxed, no vsync) in a 22c room with no cooler and probably stock pads. temps like those wont be common without voiding the warranty.

Darn, it's too bad that awesome notebookcheck site doesn't list ROPS. Hadn't thought of that. Oh well, it would still be fine for me.

I'm not getting an M15x because of the throttling. Unlike Asus with the crashing, Dell doesn't seem to care.

On top of that, they've inexplicably pulled Blu Ray out of tons of their systems. I don't know what the heck they're doing.

whether it does or doesn't depends on:
    1) vbios locks oc'ing (as some 8600 and 9600M, maybe others). nvflash/bios mod will _not_ work on calpella until mmtool v4 is leaked.
    2) max achievable oc (a variable in itself as each batch of cards is different)
    3) will the higher clocks of the 360 make up the difference in ROPs on the 260.

no sager resellers in canada for a reasonable price. buying from NCIX = only 6% GST, whereas importing will net me significantly higher shipping + 13% GST/PST + additional duty. never had a sager, so i have no opinion.

I went to Asus dealer today,
They said G51Jx 3D will be available at 4th of February with GTS 360m , but i also found a model, which is G51Jx 3D again, but with GTX 260m :D
    GTS 360m is DDR5, and GTX 260m is DDR3.
    Price for G51Jx 3D (15,6"/ 3D/ 720QM/ 8G/ 500G7/ BluRay/ GTS360M/ WiFi/ BT/ W7U) is, 1,698.94 EUR.
    Price for G51Jx 3D (15,6"/ 720QM/ 4G/ 640G/ DVD±RW/ GTX260M/ WiFi/ BT/ W7U) is, 1,509.27 EUR.

I'm confused now, i will go to dealer at 4th February, and will try to run 3dMark06 and test the 3D option :D

Btw, is there anyone has benchmark for G51 series GTX 260m ?? it migt be helpful for that day...

For the 3D Version with the 260M you are referring to the G51J-3D without the "X". The G51JX versions will always come with the GTS 360M. Limited quantities of the G51J-3D versions just hit the states.

If only G51J-3D have 1920x1080 resolution, I wouldn't worry. Isn't this model comes with 1368x768?
If G51J-3D is coming at limited edition, then people don't really have much choice now since G51J is out of production and G51Jx is yet to come.

Did you guys see that NVIDIA has updated the specs for the GTS 360? It says the GPU Clock is 1436Mhz. Is that supposed to be fast and how is it like whn compared to DDR3 memory? Like what is the equivalent DDR3 speed?

That 1436MHz is the speed of the cores. That has nothing to do with RAM speed.

EDIT: 1436 is a bit faster than the older mobile parts were clocked.

Heya guys, I had a quick question. I was configuring one of these babies on XoticPC, and I noticed that it already has the built in wireless, but apparently you can upgrade to the Intel card instead. What card is already inside, and is it worth the 35 dollars to upgrade?

Edit: This might answer my question, so never mind. :) http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=455111

that is pretty disappointing. if they still use the 2.5:1 shaders:core, that would put core at 575 and a mere 5% (4.3 according to nvidia) improvement over the gts260m. it will most likely have a similar clock ceiling to the gts250m, if anyone can find oc results for it. way to go team green, at least the g92 rebadges were better...

on a gaming laptop, wired is still the only way. for anyone who cares, the 1000BGN that's in it has an injection rate the same as every other intel since the 3945AGN and no problems with the aircrack-ng siute.

There are no resellers that can upgrade this model in Canada. Can anyone tell me If I bought it here could I upgrade the wireless card and DVD to blu ray myself without voiding the warranty and is it difficult to do? Thank you in advance.

pretty sure the stock is a intel 5100 like most of the other G series. The differences between the 5100 and the 5300 are mostly in an extra antenna that the 5300 has, resulting in better throughput, distance, and reliability among others. The question is mostly whether the G73 will have a third antenna that will allow for the 5300 to be an upgrade, which last I checked wasn't actually confirmed as of yet.

    stock has almost always been the lower end of intel's offering at the time of the platform;
    g50 - 4965
    g51vx - 5100
    g51j - 1000

the jx will most likely have the same 1x2 config 1000bgn card as the j.

So it's worth the upgrade? I needed a good wireless card.

upgrading those will not void the warranty.

unless you enjoy transferring large stuff locally over wifi, no.

if it has the 3 antennas, the 5300 over the 5100 would be an upgrade I'd recommend, but only if you use wireless N. the 5100 is notorious for issues in connecting to, and retaining connections in wireless N. if you're only going to be using wireless G then no, its not worth the upgrade.

Amazon must have their heads shoved somewhere. 2.8Ghz is what the CPU can reach on a single core. 1.6Ghz is what the CPU uses when its stressing all 4 cores. it is not a Core Duo architecture so thats just plain wrong.
