Yes, it's the same one, but you're better of buying from a certified Asus reseller, such as XoticPC.![]()

Thanks element. So, basically, their info is wrong, which implies just that, or is it that they are selling a different laptop?
Sorry, I'm not good with hardware at all.
EDIT: Thanks Angelicand, thanks for the advice. Its customizable and cheaper at Xotic.

Angelic, is there any reason besides the ability to customize to get it from another retailer like that? I'm starting to get more comfortable with buying from Gentechpc or Xotic, and I'm impressed with Gentechpc's work with Asus to get that major crash issue (possibly totally) fixed, but still a little nervous about smaller vendors after some bad experiences.
Wouldn't mind being able to customize in a Blu Ray drive though!
Avalanche, it's definitely not a different laptop, just however punched that in didn't understand what the specs meant. Fairly understandable since even an enthusiast who'd been out of the loop for a year or two wouldn't know what they meant! -
The resellers offer better support for sure, and being able to speak with the heads of their companies (ala Justin at XoticPC) shows that.

I checked gts360m's specifications, and it says information:360GFlops, for mobility hd 5870 it says, compute power, : up to 1.2 teraflops...Are they different things? What is the difference? Should we wait a very bad performance, like 1/4 of it??
-
chewietobbacca Notebook Evangelist
What that means is that, theoretically, the Mobility HD5870 can calculate math intensive things faster... but for gaming, GPU isn't all that math - there's other factors such as texture units, etc.
So no, the 5870 won't be 4x faster than the GTS360M, except in very extreme scenarios where the program is optimized to use all 800 SP's on the 5870 (or in synthetic benchmarks on shader power). Not to mention issues ranging from drivers all the way to how a program is actually programmed will define actual performance, so don't read too much into comparing FLOPS as a measure of performance.. -
I Hope, I won't be mad till i run 3dmark06 on it
-
Any review on the GTS 360M yet? Hasn't anyone ordered a Toshiba with that card?
-
Until we get some benchmarks on this, we can only guess on how fast it "could" be. This is all I could find on the 5870 and 360. How they will perform is anyone's guess at this point.
The Nvidia GeForce GTS 360M is a high performance laptop graphics card and based on the GT215 core. Compared to the older GTS 260M, the GTS 360 features only a higher clock speed.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTS-360M.24058.0.html
The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 is a high-end DirectX 11 capable graphics card for laptops / notebooks by AMD. At the time of announcement (Jan 2010) the 5870 paired with GDDR5 memory should be the fastest laptop GPU (except SLI / CF) available. Technically, the chip is based on the desktop Radeon HD 5770 (RV840) with a slower clock rate.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5870.23073.0.html -
GTS 250m's performance at crysis is, at high settings 23-28 fps at 1024 x 768 resolution; For GTS 360, i think, at high settings 34-45 fps at 1024 x 768 resolution
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-MSI-GT640-Gaming-Notebook.23063.0.html
And for mobility hd 5870 with little tweak, it will perform like hd 5770 Desktop GPU. -
I really hope the overclocking limits for the GTS 360M is very high. I am planning to order a G51Jx with Artic Cooling MX-3, so I think I can overclock more! Unless of course, the laptop idles even hotter than most people's as I live in Singapore with a room temperature of 30 degrees Celsius. I'm getting fed up with my crappy A8Jr which I overclocked the Mobility Radeon X2300 to like 133% of its stock clocks, which causes lockups at times (but I don't care!) I hope overclocking the GTS 360M will at least bring the gaming performance to be on par with the GTX 260M, if not better!

Yes, I'm planning to buy mine from mucro.asia as it is cheaper. I've ordered a Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q830 from mucro.asia a month ago but still haven't received it yet, though the retailer said it would arrive by the end of this week!
I'm surprised at the cheap price the G51Jx is retailing here on the online store, at only SGD2282! A newspaper review quoted the price at $2998 and the abovementioned Toshiba at $3998 although I bought it at $2195! -
Based on feedback, I would go with mucro over cubehubs.
This is based on service, rather than price. -
Thanks for the feedback! Looking forward to the release of the G51Jx!
-
my friend will travel to Singapore on Feb 22nd, i hope it'll availabe to purchase
-
Hmmm that's pretty cheap price there, I wonder if there's tax imposed by the custom here in Indonesia. Cuz here the official distributor sold Jx for USD 1919
-
any idea on battery life on this thing with the 9 cell? would it beat the g73's 3 hours?
-
dont expect more than 2h 20.
-
-
it'll get 3h if you drop it to minimum brightness and avoid doing much of anything (eg. youtube, wifi).

Hi all,
I was really considering the G51J as an upgrade from my Z96JS. I've enjoyed this computer for many years now, and it's been great - I really like the Higher Res display (1680x1050 for it, best of it's time) when I use it for my programming and gaming, but the age is starting to show in that it doesn't have an HDMI port, and I can't display my full res 1080i HD ATSC recordings on my external 19" spare monitor/HDTV display. Plus it tends to slow down a fair bit when re-encoding those HD Recordings, and I don't know how well it'll stand up to Mass Effect 2, TOR and possibly STO along with other games I'm planning to play this year.
So I'd be going from a ATI Radeon X1600 - good for it's day, but it's day was 2006 - and of of course it's not even close to a GTS360 (even if it's just a GTX260 with more underclocking and better memory, with the GTX260 being only a 240 overclocked, which is a 8800 equivalent, etc... or so I've heard). I have a N10J Netbook which is switchable between a Intel GMA950 and an 9300M GS and can thus give 5 hours+ battery life with light use and also be a moderately good mini gaming rig when plugged in (for a Netbook of course). So I'd have that when I want to a laptop with battery power - and I'd have this when I want a laptop with power power.
When I get a laptop I get it to last - the only thing I can see lacking on this thing in terms of future tech available today is USB3 - but already you can get Express Card 2 Slot USB3.0 adapters, so I figure I'm good on that front as well. And the 1920x screen is as good as it's going to get until they get real HD 3D (and not the low res of the 1366x on the G51J 3D). I'd select a Blu-Ray Drive as well, if possible.
Anyway, I wanted to ask - I liked how the G51J had dual hard drives, so I could backup between them or have the OS on one and games on the other - then I realized that if I were to get the laptop stolen I'd lose all the backups and I know if I had two I'd be doing that, so I'd rather keep the backups separate and safe - plus there was no RAID support anyway. So that isn't a major concern for me anymore - I don't mind having the extra RAM slots of the G51Jx for further futureproofing and saving those 5Wh or so of power till then. I've been seeing these things all over eBay and it seems like some may be in circulation - so my question is, is there any reviews on this thing? The GTS360 could be a ok to good to lousy- depending on how well the GDDR5 improves things vs. the decreased buffer - so it'd be great to get some benches, game tests (to confirm no BSOD type issues) and some battery tests as well to see how different things are - before pulling the trigger and ordering.
So... as soon as anyone sees a review for the G51Jx-A1 anywhere please post! And if you (yes, you, the person reading this
) happen to have one of these new things please do post that info
. The price is right, but I like to know a bit more of what to expect before ordering, especially when I can't try it out or even see it for myself first.
Thanks a lot,
Peter -
Peter, the g51jx is included with GTS 360m not GTX 360m.
GTS 360m is actually slower than GTX 260m, we gotta wait until we see how cool this thing runs and how much we can overclock the gpu. -
. If the 40 nanometre reduces the power and heat enough that we can overclock this up close to GTX260M levels when needed then that would awesome. The faster RAM certainly can't hurt those efforts - and meanwhile we could have an otherwise cooler and more power efficient system with longer battery life.
For me anyway, I'd be willing to take a small hit on performance if it means significant gains in terms of power and heat improvements - but when I say small, I do mean small - if it's more than 10% slower then the GTX 260m when we overclock it to a stable max, then I'll go hunting for one of those rare (but apparently freshly BSOD free) G51J-A1s instead. Considering that the GTX260M in the G51J-A1 was already underclocked to 500 instead of 550 - well the GTS360M running at full stocks with more room to overclock - we'll see.
Either way, Data, Data, Data - I can't work without data - if you have a review, or test scores or anything like that on the G51Jx please share.
Thanks,
Peter
P.S. The other reason I'm asking right now, rather than just waiting a few days when everyone gets it is that tomorrow is the last day for a sale at my local retailer on the G51J-A1 for $100 off - so any info now can really help me decide - thanks -
removing the drive will save you 0.05Wh if it's in standby (+-accuracy of the battery discharge reporting), 0.82Wh if it's spun up and idle, and 5Wh iff you're copying files to/from it.
gddr3 with 256bit and gddr5 with 128bit will net you the exact same memory throughput with a difference only caused by the memory frequency. heres something i found earlier today: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-MSI-GT640-Gaming-Notebook.23063.0.html. the gts360m is a rebadge of the 260m, the 250m has the exact same config with lower clocks. by estimating the boost in clocks is 80% or so effective in number crunching (judging by nvidia's gts260m and gts360m gflops specs), it will be roughly 125*.8 = 100 MHz linearly better. that would be adding a score of 100/450*(2923) = 650 to the base of 2923 in SM3.
even if you give it a generous bonus of, say, 200 points for the faster CPU (p8700 vs i7-720) it only comes up to 2923 + 650 + 200 = 3773 in SM3.
in comparison i get 4533 on stock asus clocks and close to 5120 on regular gtx260m clocks.
take what i said with a grain of salt, as that difference is a lot bigger than what i expected, but the math reasoning is there. -
If the difference is truly that great - well I think I'll call up my local shop now and ask about the 51J incase it is...
Thanks,
Peter -
As soon as my G73 shows up and checks out ok with no major Snafu's from Asus, I will be selling my G51j on here. I appear to have a "golden sample" as my cpu/gpu therms are on the low side of what people were seeing and also never had any Bsod's (on the games that I play).
-
looks like we'll find out once people start benching, but this doesn't look good at all. i think i might rather keep my g51j with it's throttling problems (never really cared for the BSoD as it never happened on XP). -
Peter, the ETA for the G51Jx is supposedly February 5th, according to Justin from Xotic PC. So I wouldn't expect any benchmarks until at least then.
-
Based on the specs that we know how would it compare to my system below. Will the graphics be better?
-
Hey!
I didnt read all pages (started on 30)..
i wanted to know if there is some info regarding battery life.
how long should it last? -
Yes. Not by a whole lot but you will see the performance difference.
-
-
that was freaking fast =p
haha
thank you.
right now im completely lost =/
i like the portability of m11x, but the cpu scares me a little.
g51jx looks very nice...
g73jh is so powerful, but 17'6 is no joke...too heavy. -
-
By the time I got around to calling my local shop they were closed, so I'll have to ask tomorrow - who knows, they might not even have any G51J-A1's, and the $100 off might have sold every last one earlier this week. And if they do but don't have them on hand then maybe I can get a rain check and I'll get a chance to see the G1Jx info. Oh well, will see how it works out. If anyone gets more details though please do post.
Thanks,
Peter -
Yeah good luck with that deal Peter. I'm hoping to get some benchmarks too soon. Unfortunately I think a lot of people are waiting to see that before they buy, so we may have to count on the retailers to get us some benchmarks.

Oooh, Notebookcheck just posted their approximations for the performance of the GTS 360M. It doesn't seem to bad, although Crysis Warhead isn't playable at Ultra (who plays at Ultra on a laptop?). The approximations are based on weaker cards, so the actual results might be more optimistic!
-
I also think it was only 2lbs lighter as well. I really think Asus needs to lower the price a bit $200 or more. I would strongly reconsider my choice if Asus can get the price to $1400 with the blu-ray and 500G HD. -
Yeah, I was hoping the G51Jx would still be affordable with a Blu-ray drive? Why the hell is the add-on so expensive? Anyway, can you get the same drive anywhere else that would fit into the G51Jx?
-
-
Just search GTS 360M on Google. Select the first result which will bring you to NotebookCheck. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for game performances (approximations). That's all that is new.

Just found some new info (to me at least) over at videocardbenchmark.net. They have G3D ratings for the new GTS 360m. I've posted a few comparisons below.
GTX 260m - 727 [G51j] Rank: 83
Mobility Radeon HD 5730 - 662 [N61jq] Rank: 106
GTS 250m - 656 Rank: 107
GTS 360m - 644 [G51jx] Rank: 110
Mobility Radeon HD 4670 - 590 Rank: 129
Also, keep in mind with the rankings that their listings include desktop cards as well.
So according to this site, the GPU in the N61jq, a non gaming audience targeting notebook, performs better than Asus' dedicated line of gaming notebooks in graphics performance. Anybody know how reliable these benchmarks are when it comes to real world game performance? I haven't really seen these scores much before. -
from notebookcheck,
they also say 360 gflops over nvidia's 413.
as for the estimates, why compare it to a 4670?
@brochiller; those results are garbage simply because the 250m beat the 360m.
Asus G51Jx-A1 w/ GTS 360m (GDDR5), now available for pre-sales!
