If the cooling is the same design as the g73 it helps to have the unit propped up slightly, I think this is the case for 95% of notebooks out there though. My g73 doesn't seem to care whether or not the cooler fans are on, just sitting it on top of one reduced temps by ~3c.
-
I'm just gonna jump in really quick here and say the ONLY reason I haven't already bought a G73 and won't buy a G53 is that they don't have any inputs other than USB. Even if they added just an express card slot so I could add whatever other I/O I need that would be enough. I know these are gaming systems but geez, ya think maybe I might want to use it for all the other stuff a powerful computer would be capable of too?
Otherwise, they're everything I want. It just kills me they're so limited in connectivity. G51 has every input you'd want, why not the G53/G73? -
just wait a bit for the USB 3.0 to (insert media type here) adapters to come out lol, a lot of things can run off of 5v, and I'm sure a ton of makers would be happy to take full advantage of USB 3.0's bandwidth

I use my laptop cooler unplugged for when I want it propped up
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
I don't have a G73, but I'm sure the Xpad Slim will be a perfect fit.
-
-
Yeah it is really strange that they have to remove expansion slots like Express card.....
-
Expresscard is sort of dying out anyways...
@hasib: I'm used to having my notebook propped up a bit so I'm using the cooler from my old lappy with the fans off. It looks funny because the g73 is bigger than the cooler now and it looks like it is floating from the front view -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Well, it was modeled on a stealth bomber...

Hey guys, what do you think of the MSI GX 660-R (the 1080p version) compared to the G53?
MSI launches MSI GX660 performance gaming laptop -
Ati 5870 vs Nvidia 460 will be the big debate, we can't test yet how their going to compare head to head but predictions say the Nvidia will have slightly faster performance on DX11 Games.
Don't think the G53 has a subwoofer built in, MSI does.
MSI has a 9 cell battery, and I think the G53 is only up to 8.
Don't exactly know what these are but copy and paste from the MSI spec list there are their Special Features - MSI TDE, MSI Cooler Boost, Dynaudio, DTS Surround Sensation UltraPC, ECO Engine Dynamic LED lightning effect, 3D Color-Film-Print.
The G53 will include the option for Widi i think, which is quite neat and the new cooling system that is also featured in the G73 will be there which should be quite nice. The weight of the two laptops are very similar, can't remember off by heart how much the G53 weighs but it's close to the MSI at 3.5kg.
There is no word from MSI on pricing and availability of the MSI GX660 yet, but we know from resellers that the G53 should be out at the end of september at around the 1500 mark for the i7 model, no word on the BB model just yet. -

probably GTX460M < 5870M----> http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-460M.33612.0.html
-
you know, I'm starting to think that the "GTS 350M" was just a filler name because the actual GPU name and credentials were yet to be released by nvidia. until recently the GPU and its naming has been confirmed, but not officially released by nvidia. probably subbed the 350M while doing the wait, you can't just post up specs like "nVidia Enthusiast Graphics" forever, right? either that, or the GTS 350M was in the pipeline from the beginning, and they recently jacked it up to a GTX 460M.
-
I was dead set on the G53, but seeing as the GX660R has more features, I'm opting for that one instead.
2 USB 3.0 ports
Expresscard (possibile to do Vidock later)
5870m > GTX460m (G53)
Battery life, better battery
Better sound system
The only thing the G53 has over the 660 is the Widi and I haven't even read anything about it recently. I dont need 16gb for what I do either. Can anyone convince me in getting the G53. I really like the style of the G53.. -
They're both pretty sweet laptops, that have their own pros and cons, i think it might come down to which one looks the best. The G53 has a subtle reserved look with it's matte black, while the large vents and aggressive angles suggest that this is no ordinary PC laptop and of course I'M GOING TO SH*T ON YOUR LAPTOP! (in a subtle way of course) The GX660 on the other hand just screams GAMING and POWER. So it's like if you want to buy a classy reserved Aston Martin or a Lambo. I personally think the lambo looks a little cheap and needy, it just screams for too much attention, like lady GAGA.
-
And how do i get rep power points?!?! Do i get that with my charisma and dexterity?
-
-
So far, MSI the GX740 and the GX640 have been solid in terms of reliability and performance. I would pick the GX660 over an Asus anyday of the week. One word: GSOD.
nuff said! -
hmmm the msi gx660 is looking very interesting. I'm still leaning towards the G53 though because im hoping it runs cooler and quieter than the msi. The new major plus differences that I see are Dynaudio sound system for the msi and widi for the g53. Though neither play a factor for me since I mostly use headphones and i have absolutely no use for widi or 3d. O well, gotta wait till its released.
-
Yeah I'm stuck between the G53 and GX660 also. Wanted to play FFXIV on a laptop once it comes out but I don't want to go over 1200. So unless the GX660 can be configured to be under $1100, I'll have to get the BestBuy G53.
-
-
Can you get Widi on other computers, or is it the G53 that is showcasing it first off?
-
Yeah, it's called a HDMI cable
It's a pretty cool feature but does not factor in my decision in buying one at all.
Without a cable I'm thinking there would be some lag when you tried the WIDI and gaming.I don't know anything about it besides what it's supposedly going to do but then again I might be completetly wrong.
The MSI looks really sweet! -
Never heard of widi until I heard about the G53. It's like biometrics; I have it, but never used, forgot it's even there. I say that now.. haha.
Just configured the GX660R. $2500.. ouch. again, I still like the style of the G53 a lot better. -
I'm sure that you fully loaded the MSI at that price, the G53 will be pricey too if you fully option it.
Gaming laptops are not cheap if you want the real high performance hardware. -
-
-
That'd be my choice if it were 14-15" but I'm not a fan of huge laptops unless I were replacing my desktop with it.
-
(translation. I already have a stealth-fighter esque desktop case (Raven 1 by Silverstone). so I want some mobile beef to complement its design. ehehe) -

life suks, last week was exciting,, finally the all new G53JW is on the pre-order list.. then bam we're left in the dark again!! like it has never excited..
-
It is wierd how they announced it and then pulled it back.
Probably just wanted to create a buzz over it. -
I think this is one of their business tactics. I dont think the g53 will be available anytime soon and asus wants us to keep waiting.. Thats why they announced the specs and price and then removed it.. In case, as we are already glued to the g53 for a few months now, this announcement will keep our thoughts away of other laptops especially msi gx660 which are similarly priced(atleast for me and asus did a pretty good job to keep us waiting since am still waiting for my g53)..
-
I will have to admit the MSI GX660R is a very nice laptop and a very good second choice.
Either way you get a great laptop now or wait till whenever. -
After seeing what the GT 445M can do (mid-range, yet equal to the GTX 260M), I'm firmly planted in the 'wait' camp.
Nvidia is on to something, and I'm willing to wait until the dust settles. -
-
MSI is a nice laptop, but it just don't have "it"..
-
I don't know lol. I was caught by surprise with the 445m. It reaches GTX260m performance while it doesn't seem the high end gets such a bump in performance. -
-
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
I'm looking at the GT 445m thread, and if 335m is to GTX 260m as 445m is to GTX 460m, the G53 is going to be one strong gaming machine.
-
Is the G73jw coming out at the same time, or do we not know yet?
-
If the 460M is faster than the 285M, it's within 10% of the Mobility 5870. Boy will Clevo looks silly, redesigning their entire line around that overpriced, power hungry 480M.
I'm getting excited. I really want some info on the GTX 470M. I wonder if Nvidia canceled it, because it ended up as a far superior candidate to the 480M. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
If the 335m is significantly weaker than the 260m, then I hope that comparison is followed and that the 445m is significantly weaker than the 460m.
And since the 445m is damned powerful from what we can see, well... -
Though a post on Asus ROG site says "Rumour has it that theres a slight delay in production (G53) due to the difficulty in getting hold of suitable screens".
I'd say the exact date is anyones guess. Most likely their release dates are gonna be a week or 2 apart at the most late september to mid octoberish. If its November...ugh Imma end up buying something else cuz of my lack of patience. -
-
The 445M will not be much slower than the 460M. It will even out like the 260M vs the 285M.
Asus G53, the smaller version of the G73jh
