i just read that ATI will announce their new desktop gpus on October and to be available to the public on November... so it might be kinda close to how it was last year.
ATI Southern Islands launches in October
So..... I'm asuming their mobile versions might be released also early next year, now more decisions come to play... go for G53 or wait for Intel Sandybridge + ATI 6850/70.
-
The waiting game.
It's tuff, it seems there's always something better right around the corner but the thing is do you need/want a new laptop?
Sandy Bridge should release around Q1/Q2 of next year and the next generation of ATI GPU's too.BUUUUUT there could be delays.
Personaly I think the wait is too long and the upcoming 460M GTX and i7 core CPU's should still be a great combo for a long time.
If your happy with your current setup then wait but who knows exactly how long the wait will be. -
Yea what IKAS said. If you're happy with your system and its handling whatever your needs are then why not wait a bit longer. As for me, I'm on a 4 year relic and my poor radeon x1600 cant handle many new games anymore.

But that's not all, according to the leaked benchmarks and intel Sandy Bridge will be 20%-25% faster than the current i7 CPUs and it will produce less heat (but consume same watt)
So Sandy Bridge CPU will have massive performance boost over the current i7 720QM (it's 2.2Quad with +25% extra performance and higher turbo boost speed vs 1.6Quad which produce more heat
The reason why Intel is taking their cpu speed seriously is because of AMD latest Quad cpus for laptops
G53 is becoming a joke atm (not Asus fault, it's nvidia problem) but with sandy bridge info also leaked/radeon 6000 it's hard to justify a 1500$ for the G53 now, maybe a 999$ model from bestbuy would be okay so i can sell it with not much loss after 3 months but not sure about 1500$
We still don't even have a release date for the G53 lol, looks like Nvidia is aiming for the holidays November/December while intel plan to release their mobile cpu at the end of the year same with ATI cards, wasn't 5870 mobile released in January? when the desktop parts was released 2 months earlier?
To make it simple Sandy Bridge/RADEON 6000 Mobile is confirmed to be available Q1 2011 so that's Jan/Feb/March 2011 And G53 will properly get released in November~ -
Hmmmmm...
I have to admit HSN21 put up enough for me to seriously consider holding my G51JX a little while longer..
Think about it if The new G series platform (stealth dual cooling etc) gets more powerful than the i7 and less heat...that's huge! As it is I'm looking at the G53 just for the cooling system alone. Also whats to say ATI's new yet to be announced offerings smoke the current 5870 which right now we are only hoping the new Nvidia beats it and by what unknown margin. Maybe we will also see some of the ports return to the G platform as well.
Interesting.... anyone got more info you can point me to on whats really known about Sandybridge and whats likely to be out in say...6 months? -

after a bit of googling I found this on some forum
TipidPC.com | Asus G53JW-SZ056V GameBook (8Gb DDR3 + nVidia GTX 460M with 1.5Gb GDDR5)
http://www.pccorner.com.ph/pdf?action=pdf&c=57&p=5250
Not sure how accurate this info is but it says August 17th though it seems to be some kind of Philippine reseller? No idea.
edit:: theres some extra info in the preorder thread in a post by clozada. Apparantly theres already preorders going through in the Philippines? -
According to the "official" leaked slides Q4 2010 For desktops/Q1 2011 for notebooks and it's highly unlikely for intel to delay it because it was suppose go be released next year but Intel announced that they will release it earlier now.
It's pretty much an i7 but 20%-25% faster clock to clock with new technology that allow it to process video and audio files faster during video editing and new security/less heat with new socket for the 32nm Quads (Which means you will upgrade your cpu easily in the future) plus a punch of other things that wouldn't really matter for the average person, -
I completely agree with this. What is the point of buying the new g53 and even the g73jw if their release is close to the new release of the intel sandy bridge cpu and the new ati 6000 video cards (a matter of months) might as well save that $1600+ for a few month and invest in the newer tech for better future proofing. As mentioned the new intel cpus will get a performance boost of about +20-25% which is a real good increase, although Im not sure how much better the new ati graphics card would be put up against the 5870 and if the performance difference would be that much different to make the wait worthwhile. I hope it will be though as I plan to wait until the beggining of next year to make a better informed decision on my laptop purchase. The only thing that is confusing me now is the AMD fusion vs the new Intel sandybridge cpus. What do you guys think will be better? Is the AMD fusion as good as it is being said to be or is it just overhyped? Also, which one would you guys like to see a new asus laptop in 2011-amd fusion or intel sandybridge would this be a deal maker/breaker?
AMD Fusion V. Intel Sandy
Is AMD's Fusion processor an Intel killer? | News | TechRadar UK -
it must be great according to TipidPC
"Just for size comparo and feeeellllllll....it is HUMONGOUS IN SPECS !!!!! !!!!!"
Lol! -
-
For top performance in notebooks it will continue to be a combination of Intel CPU + Latest discrete GPU from ATi and Nvidia.
The AMD Fusion will be a killer in Netbooks, Business class notebooks and low-mid range. The GPU on the Fusion is expected to be around low-mid-range. And the CPU will be a Phenom II most likely which doesn't compare to the i7 or upcoming Sandy-Bridge.
- But I think Fusion will be huge as it will provide unbelievable amount of power to netbooks for example. Netbooks will be as powerful as a business class/mid-range notebook.
But hopefully AMD's entirely redesigned "Bulldozer" which will have EVERYTHING that Sandy Bridge will, AMD's version of Hyper-Threading, support for Quad channel ram, Intel v-tec, etc etc.
- How good it will be compared to Intel's Instructions Per Clock is not known.
- That's AMD's current problem, they lack in IPC in comparison to Intel right now. -
Now you guys are talking like if ur going to buy an apple product. Something better will always come out, a G53 has enough specs to last u comfortably for at least 5 years
-
How old your current computer is dictates how urgently you need to upgrade, and how long you can afford to sit back and wait for the next shiny new thing to come. If you don't need to upgrade right away (pretty much anything bought in the last 18 mos) I'd say waiting for sandy bridge + 6870 is a solid choice.
And I'll say it again, I'm pretty flabbergasted that asus intends to miss the back-to-school rush for what will no doubt be a hot seller... -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
I'll be perfectly happy with a GTX 460m and an i7-x40qm. Games aren't, for the most part, pushing graphical boundaries at the moment, so the GTX 460m is going to stay relevant for a long time.
(Hell, my GTX 260m is still pretty strong in the GPU hierarchy. I am not, however, immune to the ZOMG NEW TECHNOLOGY!!1!!1" phase) -
-
5 years??? I'm lucky if one lasts more than 1 yr MUST HAVE LATEST bug is a terrible thing.
-
The only time I advocate waiting (for new tech), is when we're right on the bubble of new technology, which is where we are now.
If the G53/G73w were coming out this month, I'd say go for it. If they're coming in October, that's when we get really close to Q1, where a superior technology will be released, and we know that Asus will update its line with this tech.
Then of course, it depends on what level of notebook you have now. If you have a decent C2D and a GPU stronger than an 8600M GT, waiting for ATI's 6000 and Sandy Bridge is maybe the wise decision. -
Wise words.
If the G53 was already out(which I thought it would be) I'd say why wait but without a real release date I'm in limbo.
All I hear is it being pushed back, first it was end of August/September know posters are saying September/October maybe November.
I can wait but if the wait is to long I just might wait a bit longer and see what's on the horizon.
Grrrrrr.....waiting sucks! -
your telling me,, im in the same boat as you,,,, ive actually been looking at possibly even an alienware..... The new MSI 660R or the g73jh
i guess it really depends how much money i have in september,,,, (this is when tax will be free for me) -
-
I'm an architect, so I use a lot of adobe cs5 and rendering programs such as 3ds max (the same program they used to make Avatar). I'm a little embarrassed to say this but I still use an inspiron 1520 with 2 ghz CPU, nvidia 7600m gt and 4 gb of ram. If this crappy setup is enough for me to get by (barely) what I do then I'm assuming a G51 or w/e u guys have right now is sufficient for a couple months wait. I've also played Starcraft 2 on medium with high character detail, it was real smooth, even on that mission where u play as Protoss and u had to fight til u died. (ending of the game cutscene was unfulfilling) -
There is zero laptop in the market with GTX 460m so it doesn't seem like Asus is the reason behind the delay, Didn't MSI went with GTX285 with their latest laptop instead of gtx460m? maybe nvidia is having troubles with a Fermi card with acceptable heat/noise/power consumption/performance
GTX480 was noisy and consume 100watt/massive heat, performance was like the 5870 yet it cost much more.
G73 was released in the markest one month after its announcement, i bet Nvidia is having an issues and from business standing point releasing the cards in September would be super crazy because they have just missed the back to school rush where students buy a lot of laptops etc
If they missed the back to school rush it means their next target is the holidays (Fall 2010) if GTX460m was releasing very soon Nvidia wouldn't have contacted sellers and demanded them to remove the listing of the GTX460 yet and doesn't allow them to take pre-orders with GTX460m under specs.
Something tells me at this point that Nvidia might delay GTX460m to Q1 2010 to compete with radeon 6000/sandy bridge and they will release something like the GTS360m (mini refresh) as a fake GTX460m -
The delays probably have to do with Nvidia needing to allocate a large number of GF106 core to the desktop side. -
-
Sold it to someone that can put it to better use and I want something a little more mobile. -
-
If the G53 somehow comes out by the end of this month, u would have to wait a good 6 months. That's a semester and an half of college!!! You know how much I could not get laid in that amount of time?!?!? P0int is, pretty long wait.
-
The G51 got a line refresh fairly early/quickly too didn't it? I seem to recall them upgrading from C2quads to i7's within a matter of weeks when the i7's were released.
-
A spec refresh is just another opportunity for companies to reuse the same design and not be bothered for not releasing a new product. So they could probably release the G53 right now and 6 months later refresh and sell the same product for even longer
-
The moment MSI decided to release a laptop with GTX285m i knew there was something fishy, if GTX460m was getting released in September msi would have waited i assume, plus all resellers don't have any release date from asus about the G53.
Point is whenever G53 get released even if it was tomorrow the G53 will be outdated very shortly with real next Gen jump (New platform~) so depends on what your current laptop/Money. -
It seems that people are agreeing that the still unreleased Nivid. 460m will be on par with the 5870 if not a bit better. What performance gap do you guys think will be between the 460m and 5870 vs the 6000 relasing next year? I know this is will be all speculation though...
-
6000 series will release a 256bit 5870~ as a 6870 and it's called blackcomb
IF Ati was capable of reducing the heat of their 6000 series a 6870 256bit version should have a decent performance boost over the current 128bit 5870 -
Thanks for the info. By how much % wise better would you speculate? Something around 10-20%?
-
Stone Giant:
GTX460 : around 24 FPS
Blackbomb XT: around 22 FPS
Unigine:
GTX460 : around 12 FPS
Blackbomb XT: around 12 FPS
But DX9 and DX10 Blackcomb XT should be much better. -
Release Date ???
I will build
Core i7 740, Ram 4G or 6G, HDD 320 > 500G, GTX 460M, res 1366x768 or full HD no 3D -
@ken
where'd you get the blackcomb XT benches ken?
edit:and any idea what settings it was run at?
coz i get 28fps in stone giant
and 24.5 in unigine heaven at default settings with stock clocks..
btw wasnt whistler and blackcomb already taken as codenames for xp and 7 respectively?? -

I for sure expect the 6870* to beat the 480m just like the 5870 did with 280m.
but im unsure. i do want the g53 cos of the new gpu and new design is nice and it wont be that expensive.
but i personally have been waiting for the new sager line backed up with the new 6870* series. Hearing the new sandy beach cpus is a nice added bonus (at last quad cores at higher than 2ghz not extreme) that will bump up the budget more -
We don't really know anything about any GPU's yet(460 GTX or ATI 6000 series) so to speculate about there performance is not relevant.
When they come out then we can compare but from my experiance they uasally don't live up to the pre-release hype.
I'm not saying they won't perform really well but till I see actual numbers I will be a little leary of supposed benchmarks. -
ATi 6000 series should be just about a small increase in performance compared to HD5000 series. At best, they will match 480m.
As for the 460m, just expect 285m performance with DX11 capabilities. These new fermi GPUs are not that powerful.
I think I will go for the MSI 660. -
Not a bad choice.
The MSI is looking to be a real good laptop in the 15"/16" class. It will rank as one of the top easily with the 5870.Great hardware and features and looks good too.I think so anyway, only thing missing is a backlit keayboard but not a deal breaker. -
It's a hard decision because on one hand, I like how the G53 looks, the overall specs but I am throughly disappointed by the current 400m series of nVidia.
On the other hand, the MSI has everything I asked for on a 16inch format, HD5870 and full set of ports etc but lacks the backlit keyboard.
In the end, I preffer ATi over nVidia, so right now I am leaning more towards the MSI.
The only reason I never got a G73JH was because of the driver issues with their radeon card. Something the rest of the brands don't have.
But anyways, it is now a matter of time to see whether I get a G53 or a MSI 660. -
The whole G73 fiasco is really dissapointing and gives ASUS a blackeye, its a great laptop stock but when you try updating drivers and the BIOS you get nothing but trouble.
Asus G53, the smaller version of the G73jh
