Can I order a new panel for my G53 and if so, where from? This simple 1366x768 LED panel is the worst display I ever had in a laptop ever.![]()

There are lots of things that will affect the speed of your transfer. One thing that will cause a slow transfer on your Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1.5TB is that its rotational speed is only 5,000 RPM, and you probably don't know what internal SATA controller it has because that spec is almost impossible to find, but it would be somewhat unusual for it to be a SATA II at that rotational speed. It could even be SATA I.
The SATA controller will play a part in the equation if it's part of your source or destination for the data to be transferred to and from, which in your case it is both since you are transferring to and from an internal and external HDD.
If you are transferring between 2 USB 3.0 drives then the SATA 2 controller on the motherboard would not play a part, but this is not to say there is not another SATA controller in the HDD enclosure.
The HDD would first have to be accessible and in this USB 3.0 enclosure it will depend on whether the converter is USB3.0 <> SATAx (x being I, II or III, but in this case it isn't spec'd) it can very well be a SATA1 to USB 3.0 converter in the enclosure since these specifications are not detailed by Seagate anywhere. They are playing off of the USB 3.0 "interface" to snag you into believing the device should operate at USB 3.0 theoretical speed...which in this case is very unlikely. If the converter was SATA II or better they would say so, but again, at 5,000 RPM it is unlikely. Since the USB3.0 chip does not access the HDD itself, and the HDD is a SATAx interface it would need this SATAx to USB3 converter in order to function.
Therefore the limiting faction would be the weakest link between the source and destination. A rough example would be the phy platter / read / write head to the IC board of the source HDD to the SATAx interface chip on the HDD to the buffer on the HDD to the USB 3 enclosures using a SATAx to USB3 converter to the USB 3.0 controller on the motherboard, through the PCIe lane it's on to the to the system memory, ect ect. finally to the destination.)
In the above example the HDD itself would have it's own bottlenecks, including rotational speed, regardless of whether it's PATA, SATA, SATA2, SATA3 before it even hits the controller and buffer on the HDD itself.
The platter density, rotational speed, cluster size, buffer size, read logic in the firmware, before the data finally leaves the HDD itself, all play a big factor in it's max transfer speed, and a 5,000 RPM drive is not a champion of speed, but when the marketing guys slap that USB 3.0 "interface" tag on it everyone is supposed to believe it is going to be UBER fast when in fact the HDD itself is a DOG.
The final point is, don't blame the G53JW for advertising a USB 3.0 port...because it does indeed have one. The limitation comes from what you slap to it, and the limitations of the source and destination of your data transfer. -
Why do you think it's bad (brightness, resolution, reflection..etc)? Is that the 60hz or 120hz display?
-
Its the cheapest 60Hz LED 1366x768. The viewing angles are incredible narrow, it has lamp (led, illumination whatever) bleeding all over, greys and blacks are indistinguishable from each other and the worst part is I have to watch my girlfriend's 18.4 X-Black Sony superb panel every day!
(
-
that's tough..
I hope the 3DE display is better :|
I'll use it most of the time in a hdmi source tho.. -
Lol....I know that's hard. I'm pretty sure she's poking you everyday saying she got the best display although she can't play games....
Try ASUSparts.com. Pretty sure they can help you. BTW don't expect them to reply to your questions. Over a week now no reply from them. BTW it's not scam site. -
The panel is AUO22EC.

Which of these Hard Drives is worth getting ?
LaCie Rugged Hard Disk Only this says its a 7200rpm
LaCie Rikiki USB 3.0
Iomega® eGo™ Black Portable Hard Drive, SuperSpeed USB 3.0
My Passport Essential SE
or suggest me if there is anything better under $400
Thanks -
Hi,
Can anyone give me carton dimensions and gross weight, I'm just trying to figure shipping costs and I can't find these measurements.
Cheers
John -
Mine was 18lbs i think
with a extra power adapter -
Hi,
I'm hoping it's nowhere near that weight.
The specs say 7.5 lbs but I guess I have to also allow for the battery pack, backpack, mouse and carton etc
Cheers
John -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Shipping weight is about 18 pounds, depending on the weight of the outer shipping box used, and add to that for any upgrades like battery, AC Adapter or other externals.
-
Thanks Donald,
I had no idea
, apologies iBraveheart for doubting you
Cheers
John -
Its all cool bro
god bless you -
It's now starting to slow down dramatically within this thread assuming that most people have now got their nice new laptops.
Where does one find what new up and coming Asus models being released shortly or in the future?
John -
This thread was more of a pre-release discussion, now that computer has been released most of us have moved to the owners thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...s/527578-asus-g53jw-a1-3de-owners-lounge.html
For new notebooks - this is usually the slow time. Manufacturers are trying to move the current crop of systems over the holidays before revealing their new technologies, which are usually shown at the Consumer Electronics Show (Jan 6-9). -
I'm still waiting for mine.
Apparently still waiting for hard drive brackets. -
Thanks for that info Butr0sButr0s, I shall head over there and have a read, but keep signed up to this thread as well.
Gee that must be absolutely frustrating for you considering some vendors seem to have the said brackets and others don't!
Cheers

This will be my 1st time posting.
I've been catching up with 2 threads regarding G53 since before it's release and I'm so excited with it's performance. Based on the many positive responses owners of the current G53, I've decided that I might get 1 soon if it has Sandy Bridge with it and maybe a new GPU as well.
I've decided to make my purchase via GenTechPc,so there are a few questions I would like to ask for now, hope you guys can help me out
1. What's the difference that I have the 750GB as a primary and the 500GB hybrid drive as my secondary when it costs more to have the hybrid drive to be the primary while the 750GB as the secondary bay?
By just adding the hybrid drive and having the 750GB remain as the primary, I only spend $154. However, once I change sides, it'd be $154(500GB hybrid as primary) plus $99(750GB as secondary), that equals to $253. I can't afford paying so much since I'm not that wealthy. After all, converting US dollars to Malaysian Ringgit, it's costly.
2. Can't I just treat the hybrid drive as a primary drive when I reformat and install Windows to it when it's in the secondary drive?
3. Will the hybrid drive perform at it's best being at the secondary bay when I install windows to it?
4. Will there be another ASUS 15 inch gaming laptop coming up for the Sandy Bridge release?
Otherwise, I'd still stick to the ASUS G53 with the Sandy Bridge implemented to it.
The ASUS G53 is truly impressive and is worth the price, but I hope there will be a Sandy Bridge upgrade for it since I want to be up to date with technology and all.
Guys, please help me out, I truly appreciate that, thank you.

1: ??
2: yes as long as you point to the boot drive in the bios
3: doesn't matter
4: probably yes (see g73SW previews, 15" wont be far behind) -

Hakira, thanks for replying to my post, appreciate it =)
Ques 1 is like this :
Situation 1
1st hdd : 750GB hdd
2nd hdd : 500GB Hybrid
Cost : $154
2nd Situation
1st hdd : 500GB hybrid
2nd hdd : 750GB hdd
Cost : $233
There isn't any point for me to pay extra if there isn't any difference in performance if the hdd switch places, right? -
Yeah, the Asus eStore doesn't even have the G53Jw listed as one of their notebooks...
-
Just go to Amazon. I got a G53JW for $1299, but they raised it to $1349 a couple weeks ago. Its a steal for both prices anyways.
http://www.amazon.com/G53JW-XA1-Rep...USL8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1293652675&sr=8-2 -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
The XA1 at amazon has no backpack or mouse, only has a 1 Year Warranty instead of 2 Years, 6GB DDR3/1333 memory instead of 8GB, a 500GB 7,200 RPM hard drive instead of 750GB 7,200RPM, no 3.5% cash discount and can only be shipped to US addresses.
You give up a lot to save between $75 (cash discounted) and $125
-
Not to mention no additional hard drive, can't upgrade your wireless card, and no thermal compound.
And I live in Canada.
-
If you want customization, extended warranty & great customer service then pick one of the resellers here (GenTech, PowerNotebook, XoticPc)
-
Hey,
I finally got my G53...I'm from South Africa...I was just wondering if i should update any drivers from the asus website and if so which ones.
Thanks! -

Hi about service in india, asus authorised service centres are located in mumbai, delhi, kolkata and bangalore.. About the quality of service, i really dont know.. Very least number of people are having asus notebooks compared to other major brands.. And about your choice, if you dont mind the size of g73, you can go for it as it has good screen and cools better compared to g53.. If its a deal breaker, then you can go for g53 as both are good machines.. I ordered my g53 from xoticpc for 1.3k for almost same config minus bluray plus bag and mouse.. And am from chennai
-
hi ulgas
thanks for ur reply
shall i wait for the sandybridge processor
any one know when asus g73sw is will be avilable from xotic-pc -
Not yet. Sager has the SB cpus though, which is pretty cool.
-
lonelywolf90 Notebook Consultant
It's sad that the stock cpu now is the 2630QM,I'd prefer the 2720QM.Hopefully there is a another version of G53 that offers the stock 2720QM instead..
It'd make me have a smoother gameplay for the PCSX2 XD
Anyway, when will be the G53SW be announced and released? -
Actually, if nothing's changed within the last 6 months or so, PCSX2 is only optimized to use dual-cores, so either cpu should be fine for it.
Also, G53SW is already announced, since you're pulling the "SW" from somewhere
Only thing we're (both of us) waiting for is the release date, which will prolly be Springtime or somethin' ? ?
CANT wait
DDDDDDDDDD
EDIT: Brenthaven Metrolite Titanium $19 + ship + tax = ~$26 to Cali.

Dookie11, what about this bag? @_@
I sure hope the price won't sky rocket too and maintain around USD$1400's XD
2720QM would seriously be perfect,a 2630QM is a bit of a dissapointment though it's better than the 740QM.
As far as I know,PCSX2 games would work almost perfect if the processor could run up to 3.0Ghz,rite?
I checked Gentech & Xotic a while ago,an upgrade to 2720QM would cost a hefty USD$399,ouch!!
I'm Malaysian,it would cost me around 1.2k at least for that upgrade, costly!!! -
The bag is great. It's cheap too. Brenthaven's Lifetime Warranty
Just wanted to share it with people here, in case they're looking for a bag.
RE: PCSX2, 3.0ghz is for desktop. And that's for Core2Duo I think. The architecture for i5/i7's makes it run more efficiently I think. There's tons of youtube vids showing i5-430m/450m running PCSX2 fine. -
lonelywolf90 Notebook Consultant
Well,to play God Of War and processing hungry games like that,it requires around 3.0Ghz rite?So how bout for i7?
I suppose it's better to take 2720QM right?
That's why I'm quite desperate for that.
Btw,i7 740QM and i7 2630QM is the same right? The only difference is the additional integrated graphics rite?
Too bad that ASUS doesnt plan to implement Optimus for the G Series =( -
i7 2630qm , as others have mentioned in other threads is similar in performance to the actual 920xm. The actual i7 740qm has no equivalent in the just-released sandybelle lineup. Maybe it will later during the year when Intel plans to release more mainstream cpus, as these released in January are highend.
-
Yes too bad indeed. Maybe they could enable it with a firmware or a vbios update of some sort? Anyone know if this is possible, or would it require a certain mobo instead?
-
So what's the story with these mysterious OEM 2nd HDD brackets for the G53?
Paladin says he has them, Justin says he doesn't, and both are giving a completely different story (Asus has them, Asus doesn't have them.)
What's up? -
-
The bracket for the G53 isn't even listed...this didn't help.
Probably better off getting the G53 with a 2nd hard drive installed. -
Yeah... only the G73 is listed.
From browsing sites, I'm seeing powernotebooks is able to fill an order with a second hard drive, yet Xotic isn't. So was wondering what the story on that was, and where one can get ahold of one of the 2nd HDD brackets.
I read earlier in the thread that the primary HDD bracket can work just fine for the second slot? -
lonelywolf90 Notebook Consultant
Btw,ASUS use UEFI for the Sandy Bridge laptops already, right?
-
My Asus G53
YouTube - Asus G53 15.6" gaming laptop -
They even add it into current generation(JW) BIOS. All we have to do is enabling it
-
lonelywolf90 Notebook Consultant
Cool, that's good news, shorter boot times!! WEE!!
Just can't wait for G53SW release, I really hope they have a G53 with stock 2720QM rather than 2630QM.
Otherwise, I'll pray that the upgrade from 2630QM to the 2720QM wun be too costly, sob.. -
who needs g73 with a 15 inch screen? the beauty of gaming laptop is in the screen
-
Someone like me, who already has a 24" widescreen monitor for home use and wants to take my gaming on trips. Plus, it will probably be much more manageable if I get into grad school and want to take it to classes for gaming, er, note-taking.
Asus G53, the smaller version of the G73jh
