If we are G53SW wishlisting... provide an upgrade path for the video card! Looking at reviews of the G73JW and G73SW, no difference in game frame rate with the new processor on the same video card. (Not the best site but at least it is head to head). The SW version needs a faster card, at least as an option.

quick question, and I am sorry if this is already covered but the search sucks and its gonna take me some time to read all 421 pages.
I just picked up the g53jw-xt1 from tiger and they mention a 3d reciever built in for the nvidia card, so I just need to pick up the nvidia glasses? Want to confirm this before i drop $130 on glasses.
If this is the case which games are compatable and whats a good one to try this feature out. will it work with movies?
Thanks
w -
Pretty sure you need to connect your g53 to a 3D-compatible television in order to view games or movies in 3D
-
No the 3D version has 3D Emitter next to the webcam and wire to the onboard USB connector, it's not built-in into the video card:

anyone run into this one, the facial recog software seems to be interfearing with skype and I can not run both. when i go into skype itsays camera is in use by another program... anyone experience this?
Thanks -
Just run the pre-installed virtual camera software and it'll allow you to use oen webcam for multiple applications at the same time.
-
I do have the virtual cam installed and it sucks... slow and lags
Even the cam itself seems slow in skype.
BTW I think I figured out part of my issue, the new skype loads a toolbar program for IE I guess; and as soon as I uninstalled this it started working better.
Any suggestions on a good laptop bag? My old 15Inch backpack is too small for this laptop, think I will have to look at a 17 inch bag.

So I just got this great Asus G53, and absolutely love it. Runs every game I need maxed out, and just overall runs great. Was a bit weird at first, because I have mostly used Macs in previous year, but I have not been disappointed.
I do have one problem though, the chicklet keyboard has a bit of rattle to it, in the bottom left corner. It has some give to it, not a defect amount, but just enough to be annoying, and seeing as it is new, a bit surprising. Following online instructions, I popped the keyboard off carefully and had a look, only to find that there appeared to be nothing out of place. Is it like this on every one, or is mine unique. And if so, is there a fix for this? I had thought about buying some thin tape and putting it around the inside edge to prop it up, or to apply some double sided tape to the metal underneath and just let it stick down, but I thought I would post in the owners lounge first and see. Seems like something pretty stupid to send it back for, but it is really annoying, the rest of the keyboard is solid, but every time I type on that side or use the ctrl/shift/fn/a/s/x/q/tab/windows key it is spongy.
Thanks! -
I would push down on it in that area to make sure the unit is mounted properly. Worse case scenario, you can add some foam tape to give it some support.

@Big_E There are tabs on the bottom side edge of the keyboard, closest to the palmrest, if one of those was out of place (or broken) it could explain this. You said you took the keyboard off, so I'm not sure how to help at this point, you're in a better position to find out by looking at it. Did anything look bent?
-
Thanks for the reply's guys.
Yes I pushed down on it, trying to see if it was just seated badly, and that is not the case.
As for ALLurGroceries, when I took the keyboard out, I couldn't see anything wrong with the tabs at the bottom, nor anything wrong with the housing that they slide into. Nothing looked bent, broken or out of place, which is really weird. -
Only 2 pages on here since this laptop came out 2 months ago? What's a matter with it?
-
Hi All,
Was until a month ago the proud owner of a Medion X6811 (MSI GX 660R in disguise) but due to burglary have now ordered the Asus G53JW-A1 (i7 1080p GTX 460m, 6gb RAM, 750gb HDD etc.) all the way from the US of A (thanks to a friend coming to visit)
All well and good, but i can't find any substantial user reviews, can any of the new owners offer a proper user's review? Is there anything i should look out for? I plan on upping the RAM from 6gb to eventually 16gb (one day) and adding in a 128gb SSD (Again eventually)
Can anyone advise on the HDD quality? one website said about it being a hybrid drive (!??!?!) Also i hear hard drive brackets for the 2nd HDD slot are hard to get hold of?
Thanks -

Funny you should mention reviews, as my next one will be the G53JW-A1. Performance-wise in games, expect the same results as a G73JW-A1. In fact it's very much similar to a G73, just a tad narrower. HDD bays are a bit of a pain to get to as opposed to the G73. There's a guide here somewhere for getting to them. You'll need to do a full disassembly to perform any memory upgrades.
It's been hassle-free compared to the G73JH; no need to do any repasting. If you get a panel you are unhappy with, you may wish to invest in getting a new one and swapping that out. -
I tried searching but wasn't able to come up with an answer (although I know what it probably is going to be). A friend of mine has a G53 and needs to know if a hard drive with a 12.5mm X-Height will fit in one of these. He has a line on a Constellation.2 1TB drive that he would like to use in it if it will fit. I've never seen a G53 up close and personal (he doesn't live near enough for me to look at his) and I'm trying to help him out. I'm betting they won't fit, but maybe he'll get lucky.
Any info would be helpful. -
No it will not fit.

I just received a G53SW-XN1 from Newegg yesterday and I am wondering if anyone has taken one apart yet to answer my question. One of the reviewers on Newegg mentioned that he purchased a HDD caddy for the same model machine that I bought, and that the computer actually came with one. I did not see one in the box, but is it possible that it is already installed and can support another HDD? I was thinking that I would have to remove the Optical bay to install another HDD, but does anyone know if this laptop supports two HDD's + the optical?
-

Yes, it supports 2 HDD + the ODD, but the 2nd bracket does not usually come with it. You would have to open it so see if yours cam with one, and if not, buy one at ASUS eStore
-
Okay, hey guys I thought that I would post back here with my results.
I just took apart my G53SW-XN1 after watching a youtube video on how to do so, and I found out that the reviewer on NewEgg was correct, there is a second hard drive caddy ALREADY INSTALLED. Thank you Asus!
Here is some eye candy:

I guess they changed the 2nd hard drive placement from the JW to SW model?
-
So I am wondering if it is something I am doing wrong or what.. I reformatted the computer with Windows 7 X64 to get rid of all the bloatware. I then reinstalled all of the G53 drivers that I thought I would need from the Asus website, and the microphone sounds TERRIBLE. I did not test it before I reformatted, but I have been playing with the settings and unless I put microphone boost all the way up, I'm barely audible and it sounds like I'm in a can.

For the G53J, where is the key to adjust the contrast on the display? I can only find the brightness (F5-6) but cant find the contrast key...
thanks -
Hey guys I got the G53sw-A1 and loving it so far.
But, when I plug in my usb 3.0 external HDD I get a message that "this device can preform faster in a USB 3.0 port"
?? I'm using the blue port marked SS, what am I missing here?
External is a Verbatim 1TB usb 3.0 HDD. 3.5" externally powered.
Can anyone help me? I find no love by searching google.
Thanks. -
You need to install the latest USB 3.0 drivers. I'm assuming you have W7 64 so here you go!
-
Ok cool, I do have windows 7 64bit home premium going on.
My usb 3.0 driver currently is V3.0.119.1
I will install that which you have linked to and report kind sir. -
sorry but should I use the windows installer or the Aspatch?
-
run install64.msi
-
This should be below the next comment but anyway,
I got rid of then verbatim and bought an OCZ Solid 3 drive, installed in usb3.0 enclosure and did some tests.
Despite some test spikes up to 102MB/s the drive consistantly performs at 60MB/s write and 90MB/s read.
Not ten times usb2.0 but its a start and its consistant or better then this at all times.
I did however notice the speed decrease with every test i did, whereas the external HDD got faster each time slightly up to a point.
I hate technology, LOL. -
I did a search and wiped every mention of Fresco from my lappy, and even went to uninstal programs and got rid of the Fresco controller.
Then your link worked, now to test the speeds!!!!!! So now my version is now V3.0.116.3 after using your link.
(the funny thing is asus support reccommended an even older version V3.0108.16 but I cant find it anywhere.)
To be sure, I'm still getting the message "this device can perform faster"
So I was using driver V3.0.119.1 and getting 25MB/s,
Then with no driver device wouldnt show up at all when in 3.0 port,
Then went down to your link driver of V3.0.116.3 and got the following results:
a 1.5GB file transfered from the lappy to the external took 42 seconds. (35MB/s)
the same 1.5GB file transferred back to the lappy in 9 seconds!!!!(150MB/s)
(repeated these tests twice to same results)
So I am going to try and figure out why read/write speed differs so much. 150MB/s to 35MB/s.
Do you think my external drive is kinda crapish?
Also I think I will try the V3.0.119.1 drivers again, hopefully what-ever slowed them down got removed in this whole ordeal, lol.
Thanks guy you da man.
Is my result decent? Or should I actually see 500MB/s transfer speed for both read and write?
Cheers. -
Here is a question I just can't make up my mind on.
Which do you get?
g53sx
i7-2670QM 2.2GHz
15.6 inch
8G RAM
500G drive
GTX 560M
resolution 1920x1080
2 year warrenty
total cost including $16 shipping ~$1387.81
This laptop will likely fit in my current 17inch laptop bag.
g74sx - refurb
i7-2630QM 2.0GHz
17.3 inch
8G RAM
1T drive
GTX 560M
resolution 1600x900
90 day warrenty
total cost with free shipping ~$1073.49
Will not fit in my 17inch laptop bag so I'd have to buy a new one for ~$90-100.
I really like how the g74 is setup and looks, plus its cheaper by ~$300. The lack of warrently could be a issue but I take my laptop in and out of the bag 3-5 times a day, I don't know if I want to lug that around 5-6 days a week. Plus the savings are used up due to needing a larger bag.
I can't say the g53 looks bad, there are a few things like usb port locations that I dislike and I hear the keypad and touch pad aren't the best. At 15.6 inches it had better fit in my 17 inch bag and it has a better processer with everything else being about the same or irrelvant to my needs. Is better for travel due to less weight and smaller size.
From my scouring the web I get the impression the g53 can get a bit hot, but so far as I can tell the g74 has less of a problem due to larger vents and overal size.
Whats one to do? Or should I just wait till christmas or black friday in hopes for something better/discounted or wait for them to figure out how to get that gtx 560m into a small form.
Asus G53, the smaller version of the G73jh
