I just got an Asus G71, so what do people want me to do with it :p ?

By the way does anyone have any tips to make the battery last longest? Also would it be fine if I just use the laptop with the power plugged in with no battery connected to it?

The following would be nice to have:
3DMark06 benchmark results (at 1280x1024 if you have an external monitor, 1440x900 if not)
FurMark Stability Test - Xtreme Burn Mode temperature results
    In-game performance

download this program http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php the 64bit version on the top left and tell me what your temps are . I am going to head out in a bit to bestbuy and probably grab one but that would be a good start to even see some idle temps.

On a side note, how well do you guys expect this will be able to handle some of the new games coming out in the future (Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Modern Warfare 2, etc.)? The games I plan on play on it are: Oblivion, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, World of Warcraft, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1/2, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty: World at War, Left 4 Dead, Devil May Cry 4, and Prototype.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-260M.14559.0.html

if you look at the bottom it shows you a pretty nice stats. It was tested on a P8600 and the GTX260. It's the Sager model. I'm sure all the games you listed will run fine, except Prototype. B/c I think thats much more CPU intensive also. Big Bioware fan I see lol... I can't wait for the new Star Wars MMO also. Hope its good.

@1440x900 its going to play most of those games maxxed out . Some of the MMOs im sure you will have tinker with to find optimal settings . Ill be clocking my GPU right up to what it should be from the factory instead of the mild clocks it has out of the box.

Yep, I'm really looking forward to the Star Wars MMO. First BioWare game I played was Baldur's Gate and have been hooked to their games ever since (I didn't really care too much for Neverwinter Nights though). That's somewhat of a shame that Prototype is CPU-dependent, but not too bad for me because I usually only play Prototype (or Devil May Cry 4 for that matter) when I'm not in the mood to play anything else (I'm not really big into the whole hack-and-slash genre).

This will crush those games lol. Seriously, I don't think any of those games will be better than Crysis graphically. And Left 4 Dead 2? That's gonna be a joke. MW2 also uses some engine as first MW so it won't be that hard to max out either.

G51 will have a harder time... The CPU is so weak. This laptop won't have any problem with Bioware games. Only game I can see it really having problem (on max setting with AA) is Crysis and GTA IV.

Sounds good. I have GTA IV for the Xbox 360 so that's not an issue (I hardly ever play it anyhow), and Crysis was neat for its graphics, but elsewise, I didn't really care for it, so that's not an issue for me either.

I think the first game I may put on there when I get it is BioShock... haven't played it in a good while and it's one of my favorite single-player shooter games.

Be sure to lemme know/write up a review! I'd really appreciate it because I'm really, really leaning towards that model. I might just end up picking one up and not opening it to wait for more details, then decide to keep or return. (You can do that without getting the restocking fee, right?)

Yo, Quadzilla... My G71 seems to be acting retarded already... I installed Crysis and everything was fine; however, suddenly the frame rate dropped from 27ish to 2... And it won't go up... This is really troubling.

It could be the power profile its in ? i dont know just yet till i uninstall all the crapola it comes with . Going to take me a few hours before i can give you any advice or suggestions.

Im actually very happy with the screen this thing came with as mine is very bright and no dead pixels :D. Sure the resolution is not WUXGA but for this card this screen should be perfect and it was one of those things i thought i would have to replace right away. Viewing angles are much better then i expected and almost no screen door effect IE move your head a little and the colors start to wash. Its not the blackest of blacks but for what these things cost its still nice :).

So did anyone get to update the driver for the GPU? wow... This is bs... My GPU hit max of 82 C while playing Crysis on 1024x768 with everything pretty much on enthusiast. It was hitting almost 30 FPS (not when there is a lot of fire), everything was fine and ; however, suddenly the thing craps on me and drops the FPS from 30 to 2 FPS. I mean seriously is this ? It seems like the graphic card just turns off once it gets over 82C.

I think ASUS uses a weird ID or something so the driver can't identify it. You need to change the inf file or whatever I think.

I went and checked it out... and other then the downclocking issue... I am in love with it... not too heavy, during stress test the keyboard barely got hot at all, etc. Screen wasn't as nice as the G51, but I could hardly call the screen bad (I thought the quality was pretty decent). Also, from what I could tell, the speaker quality was pretty decent as well (not as nice as the HP notebooks I've messed with, but that is because they have subwoofers). There seemed to be a noticeable amount of vibration at some times but not enough to bother me.

Here are some pics I took (crappy quality due to my cameraphone):
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

I think its either a setting in one of the drivers or utilties or a setting in the BIOS. The GPU BIOS might have the throttling temp set to 82C. See if there is a setting for it in the BIOS. If not, the firmware will probably have to be hacked if it's not a setting in one of the utilties or being caused by one of the profiles.

Matrinix you sure its just a downclocking? B/c the game drops from 30FPS to 2FPS once it hits over 82C. This is unplayable... After that happens once the game won't go up to original FPS even once the tempt is back to normal.

I can't think of any reason it would happen exactly at 82C for everyone who's tried so far unless it was downclocking. I think theres a good chance it has something to do with the ASUS power profiles or the GPU BIOS. However, based on what you said, theres a possibility it's not simply just downclocking, but I don't know what else would be happening.

Well from your result you can tell that the GPU hit max at 82C. You might not notice it now, but if you were to play some graphic heavy game, I can bet you some money that it will pretty much stop working once your GPU hits 82C. Also looking at your oZone3D after it hits 82C it goes way down in temp. Only explanation for it is that the GPU pretty much shuts down, not just downclocking a little.

Edit: After some thought, the GPU obviously doesn't shut down for say. As I was able to play WC3 after wards; however, the thing remains underclocked, until you pretty much restart your laptop.

Also can someone help me out through the process of updating my driver on this Asus laptop.

Yeah, I think it's something up with the power profile. I haven't bought it yet because I'm not 100% sure yet, but if I had to guess where to start, I'd start with checking out the power profiles. My goal would be to first fix the downclocking issue, then restore the GTX 260M to the NVIDIA clocks and see if there is a heat problem, and if not, leave it like that.

What do you mean by the power profiles? As in it's in power saving or performance and etc? If that's what you're hinting it's not that.

It might be powermizer forcing it to do that , i was just playing a game and sure enough it did the same thing to me. The framerates are great though prior to the downclocking lol.
