Dang. I almost pull the trigger on G71.
Now I'll be watching and waiting (maybe new Bios from Asus?).
    Can somebody try Powermizer Switch:

This laptop is great once we figure out how to fix this issue. Has anyone tried contacting ASUS about it yet? Also, maybe we can get a forum member who is an ASUS expert in here to give us some ideas.

Asus never usually has anything to say other then send it in :). They dont test there machines much beyond 3d06. ill spend the rest of the day trying to get to the bottom of it and hopefully make some headway . The fact it slows down right at 82 is saying something like its the drivers set that way for what reason i dont know.

if i read the last 2 pages right, when the gpu hits 82C it clocks down to lowest and stays there?

see what happens if you disable powermizer via nv control panel (or set PowerMizerEnable in hklm\system\current control set\control\{ adapter id }\001 to 0, restart).

check with gpu-z/riva that the clocks are maxed on idle after restarting. play something to get it to hit 82C, and see if it still downclocks. if it doesn't, then it's something interfering with power management. as a temporary fix, you could set PerfLevelSrc (same key) to 3322. this will disable powermizer on AC power.

if it is the vbios, i'd need someone to dump the vbios using nvflash (plenty of guides around, try to find a verstion from april-ish).

I suppose its possible, but I think that with the craftiness of the members on this forum we can fix it without waiting for ASUS to fix it for us.

According to the resellers, the issue had nothing to do with the hardware, but rather something was wrong with the firmware, which can be fixed just by downloading a BIOS update (whenever they release it). Now that I think about it, it could very well be that the set the VBIOS settings are too low, and that the BIOS update fixes that. I'm going to check to see if there is any BIOS updates available on their support site. (We could always hack the VBIOS as a last resort).

It's pretty simple, you just use a program, load the BIOS file from ASUS, then flash it. You just need to make sure nothing else is running and your battery has at least 30 minutes of battery life and you are plugged into AC. Make sure nothing else is running when you do this (the BIOS controls your entire computer, so if the update messes up, your computer will be bricked).

$1149.99 + Tax from Best Buy.

i just got off the phone with them.besides sending in the laptop, all he told me was to restore the laptop using the recovery dvd. he said that best buy adds alot of junk that slows down the pc. he also told that the nvidia drives should install, it most be a software problem he saids.

Well the Dox drivers installed and the issue is still there so drivers and power mizer are out of the equation from what i can tell . Sad part is the G-51 hits 99 degrees and does not throttle and this one hits 82 and does lol . Im gonna keep trying things though before i give up. If i had just waited 2 more hours before people started reporting this i would have waited as well but NOOOo i had to rush out and buy one haha.

i dumped the vbios via GPU-Z then opened it in NiBitor so it seems to have dumped properly. nothing about throttling at 82 but this may have not been the proper way.

    here it is from GPU-Z

throttling threshold is 108 in the vbios, no integers equal to 82. ill keep looking though. try uninstalling all the crapware that came with it (including the asus stuff, try and get as close to a clean vista as possible).

it's also possible that it could be an acpi bug, but from my quick experience with it dsdt only controls the fan and not clocks.

Ya i uninstalled all the crapola already , i may try a clean install of Vista if need be but would rather not at the moment. Wanted to enjoy the machine out of the box basically and that aint happening lol.

The dox drivers 185.85 installed just fine rednara.

Man this machine is very nice and more so for the money but i am very angry right now lol.

i went through a similar issue on the Gateway 7811s with throttling though this one instead of the TZS0 is now the GPU but it could be that something else is causing the spike /shrug . I also find it very strange that once it throttles you have to do a complete shutdown otherwise upon reboot it will still remain that way when playing a game .

Well Rednara im hoping i can figure it out just not sure what could possibly be causing this . I find it very odd that i would have to do a fresh install because of the issue at hand though . Something is forcing it to downclock at 82 and i cant imagine its something to do with software . The fact that a reboot does not fix it also makes me think its not a software related issue and more to do with the bios and beyond our control . All this would be fine if asus didnt take forever to release Bios updates for there machines. I had a Asus W90 and they never really have fixed much of anything to this day for it and there answer to everything is to ship it back (which i wont be doing ill just return it).

    the drivers are here Red

Nothing has solved it yet . Couple things i would like others to try is 1. remove a program called NB probe and try what ever game causes your GPU to hit 82 degrees. 2. Dont run HWmonitor and play any game you know will heat up your GPU 82 degrees and let me know if it throttles.

You mean restored the computer ? if so i havent done that yet . When i had my W90 though i never had to use the second DVD that came with if i rememeber correctly . Also the restore image is on the harddrive already so you dont need to use the DVDs unless you blasted that partition . Only thing im not sure of is if the Restore DVDs are different then the backup partition . there was bestbuy software on my computer and im not sure who put it there ? but im assuming Asus is doing it from the factory now as my machine was factory sealed.

    FurMark: http://www.geeks3d.com/20090204/furmark-165-won-the-opengl-fight-against-catalyst-91/
There might be an ad that says Download ATI Drivers... this is not the correct link. The correct link is underneath the fur donut image.

To take a screenshot, have the FurMark window focused, then press Alt+Prt Scrn and open up Paint shrink the canvas very small, then paste it and save it. To upload it, go to http://www.imageshack.us/ then paste the forums code in your post.

I tried your suggestion dino but no go still throttled . I think its an ACPI issue as someone else stated in which that is out of our hands.

Asus sadly may drag there feet on this which is why i doubt i will wait 2 weeks for a fix and miss the chance to return it .

I was just at the Best Buy in San Francisco, intending to buy a G71. Beautiful machine, and surprisingly light for its size.

I ended up not getting it because I was afraid of the downclocking issue, and the salesman told me that if I returned it because of the downclocking thing I would have to pay the 15% restocking fee, as BB only waives the fee in the case of defects, and the downclocking is considered a feature, not a defect. Weak.

It overclocks to about 2.9ghz .

@tgf5 i have no clue but Asus is not what it used to be thats for sure.

i just flashed an older bios on there website same issue throttling at 82 degrees.

I doubt im going to try a fresh install of windows at this point as i think its beyond a software issue myself. Ill just box it up and go explain whats going on for a refund , maybe by the end of tonight someone will come up with a fix but im just not feeling its a software thing myself as the issue is to specific and carries over from a reboot in which case it cant be windows and is a power issue that only remedys itself upon a full shutdown.
