Reboot the machine and check the bios number to make sure it actually took when you installed it Thunderchunkee.

    Yes I'm using stock clock.
GPU-Z has 500/800 for clock/memory, this drops to 168/199 when you're on battery and it's on "Asus Power Saving Mode".
The driver's I'm using are 179.30 according to nvidia.com, gonna try to update them now.

To update the drivers do we download them from asus.com? or nvidia.com?

Considering stock clock and drivers a 500 point increase isn't bad. I believe the Nvidia drivers you want to install are the DOX 185.85 series.

Before you do that though, are you familiar with how to update video drivers? If not, you'll want to read a quick "how-to" guide and download a program to remove your existing drivers, like "Driver Cleaner Pro."

If anyone could be a pal and post temps after stress tests or long gaming. Im still not convinced that this system isnt going to overheat on some people. One fan and people climbing into the 90's makes me sad, my FX cant break 70, so Im going to stick with it.

Question to everyone who bought this laptop. When you bought it new, was the top protector thingy clean? and not too bubbly? Also was your restore disk scratched up in the sides. Also did you battery come all sealed up and had to be torn open?

This is great that the problem is finally being resolved.
Now that we have the updated BIOS will BB load it for you on a newly purchased machine?
Or are we still going to have to do it ourselves?

    Temps are looking pretty good.
How loud are the fans on this laptop?
Can you only OC 10% using Turbo Gear? Can you go higher?

The fans aren't loud at all, the only time I notice them is when they are working at their maximum, and even then it's just because I hear them starting up.
But if I'm gaming with the sound up to the smallest amount I doubt I'll hear the fans.

You can OC 3/5/10/15% using Turbo Gear, when you change to OC mode the entire laptop freezes for a sec and then begins to increase the cpu's speed.

Since the laptop clocks down the gpu when it's on battery you can't really play games unless you use a program to increase the clocks to it's stock 500/800 right?

Is it okay to leave the battery at 100% and keep the ac plugged in?
Maybe play with battery @ 20% for 1~2 hrs and then let the battery discharge?
Or just take the battery out all together?

Just played 2 hrs of Assassin's Creed and noticed I couldn't do my usual battery>ac>battery>ac cycling when playing games. Native res max settings got max temps of 58 for CPU, 83 for GPU, 42 for HD.

Tomorrow gonna try The Witcher :D .

Some prelim 3D Mark 06 Scores
    10169 @ 1280x720
    10747 @ 1280x720 OC 15%
    9373 @ 1440x900
    9724 @ 1440x900 OC 15%
Max GPU Temp. for any of these runs was around 86C
CPU Temps stable around 62C at stock, and 71C Overclocked to 15%.

Although I'm currently using the Zalman NC2000 notebook cooler, there was almost no noticeable temp difference in any hardware between 3dMark runs with or without the cooler.

However, there was definitely slower temp. crawl rates in furmark with one than without. (Anyone want to comment on this?)

    Additional Tests
    (9510, ran 3x, 1440x900 OC 5%)
    (10381, ran 3x 1280x720 OC 5%)

One more thing, I'm trying to see some results with Crysis demo on high, but it's definitely not smooth. Is it because its the demo?

Still no official release through Live Update, this morning.

I want to update to 1201 but still can't find it under any of the official download pages from ASUS and I'm leary of bricking my system with beta versions.

Guess I will wait a while longer.

What kind of framerate do you get on Crysis demo? Also from your experience the Zalman NC2000 doesn't help at all?

It should be ok. With most cell phones, it keeps the battery at 100% and makes it really hot (and destroys it). With laptops the regulator is much smarter. My FX went down as far as 7% sometimes, then back up again.

Also, has anyone undervolted one of these yet?

It could mean that the NC2000 did help keep the laptop cooler but when you put it through a stress test like furmark it's going to get hot.

When you compared cooler vs no cooler temps on 3DMark06 what were the starting temps? It could be that you did no cooler test first and got the gpu pretty hot, then put in the cooler and the test went up just as hot b/c it wasn't able to cool down?

Were you on battery when you ran the Crysis demo?

You can get the BIOS update here. It's not a beta version, I guess that ASUS is having some troubles updating things. Just make sure to be on AC power when you run it to be safe.

Thanks I'll leave it with the battery on and see how that goes.

Gonna go find a store to buy Prototype and see how it runs.
Edit: Prototype out of stock at local BB :/ Guess it's the Witcher until Tuesday.

You on "high performance" setting? Even if you turn up everything in "balanced" when plugged in, the gpu is still downclocked. At least it was on my FX.

Rednara, sorry I haven't been able to officially test out the cooler with controlled tests, soo sorry I can't help you there : / (just ran benchmark after benchmark)
I'll let you know as soon as I do. (But as I did mention, the zalman definitely helped stem the temperature spike that I saw in furmark, than when I ran it without the cooler. Also, Crysis on high for ~30 min never put the GPU temp above 88 with the Cooler, but I haven't really tried without the cooler.)

For now, I'm trying to see what I can do to smooth out Crysis performance (defrag, delete bloatware, find a better driver?)
I've updated my gfx driver to dox 185.85, if anyone knows of a better driver please let me know :)
And I may consider overclocking the GPU to get more performance.

Hey guys, sorry to barge in the gaming parade, but one quick question, does the G71GX-RX05 have that mini lcd/whatever screen on the top left corner (above the keyboard, to the left side of the shortcut buttons) like the G71GX-A1 has or is it just blank?

Or maybe you were referring to the 4 buttons + power button?

Hmm you should take your computer back ASAP Rednara , Windows should have never told you it wasnt genuine since the key is actually stored in the bios and preactivated . Check to see what version of Windows is actually on there IE home premium etc.

Yet another reason that proves your computer is used :( .

Every copy of windows that's installed on a new computer should be genuine and if you cannot confirm that it is a genuine version of windows then get an exchange for it.

No updates for vista if it's not genuine :/ wonder if this would be a problem when you upgrade to Windows 7?

Side note; Got Prototype! Last copy at BB, and Cryostatis. Couldn't find any other new game that pushed computers to their limits. Also returned BB warranty for 100% money back, what was I thinking buying it...

Yes there's 2 wallpapers with the G71 and then that one that you posted.

So when you first started up the computer it didn't ask you for your name/Computer name?

You can do a clean install from the recovery disks if you want, or just get a return but they might charge a restocking fee which they shouldn't in this case :/.

when Suuny90 and I and the other dude were the first with the G51 asus laptop we all tested using 3dmark 06 and 3dmark03 and crysis for 10 minutes+ then checked temps using HWmonitor 1.14 64bit taking screenshots and posting them, none of used a cooler to show the results. Having a cooler under the laptop the whole time while posting temps is like giving false information, stop using the cooler and post temps...

furmark got the g51 260m gtx vid card up to 105c in a room with a ambient temperature of 75-80 degrees farenheit.... 3dmark 06 and 3dmark03 got it up to 90-99c in the asus g51. crysis got it up to 99c after 10 minutes using no cooler.

Since you keep showing everyone the temps with the cooler going every benchmark ya do, its giving everyone in here false hope.

Laptops out of the box should not require a cooler, if it does you shouldnt have bought the darn thing in the first place, your just covering up a defect or heat issue that was there when the laptop was first made...

Cool, I'm expecting to see some G71GX reviews being posted up in the near future. Hopefully one from you as well. ;)

I've never seen that wallpaper before, but that may be because I never looked. Your laptop may very well be used (like the others were saying) if that message popped up straight after starting it for the first time (and WinSAT didn't run on first launch). I would go to BBY and demand an exchange and a gift card or discount for the trouble if you can verify that it is indeed used (but you paid full price for it). Also, the most common cause of BSODs on a new computer would be bad memory. What is the BSOD message? You might want to try running Memtest86. If it was bad memory, I'd also take it back for an exchange, and try to get a gift card out of it for the hassle you had to go through.

Actually every test I listed with benchmark #s was done without a cooler, so those #s are for people looking for the computer performance.

I only brought up the cooler because it didnt make a difference in temperature when running benchmark after benchmark.

Oddly enough, my computer ran cooler without a cooler, AFTER running all those tests :D

My problem was why this occurred, and how it made a pretty noticeable difference in Furmark temp rate. Next time I'll clarify it better.

(1 more note, I do seem to be getting improved Benchmark scores with the cooler, but temp is still the same) >.>

RedNara if it still says that you have a non-genuine version of windows that should be a big enough reason for them to exchange it. If they don't believe you just load it up and do the test and they'll see the asus/geeksquad software with the windows not genuine message and they can't say that's your fault in any way.

It's arguable that they could never know if the laptop was used unless you took pics right away when the papers were still on the screen etc..

Wow now the whole non geinune window message doesn't pop up. However, I really feel like my computer is messsed up. This should not happen when you buy a new laptop. Does anyone else know any other way to check this problem.

Mine did the non-genuine Windows thing a few times when I first got it, but it's not doing it anymore.

    Played 30 mins of Prototype.

Noticed that the laptop recharges on AC about 50%/hr.

1440x900, Shadows/Detail high, AS x2, don't know fps but gameplay was smooth. This res doesn't use the full screen, it has black bars at the top/bottom, guess it was made to play in 16:9 res.

Noticed that the speakers aren't that powerful.
I set the Realtek environment to Room and equalizer to Powerful, I need to turn up the sound to about 50% to be able to hear the Vista Low Battery sound.
I played Prototype using headphones and I had to the sound up to 80% and I thought that was pretty a pretty medium sound level in game.

Also the laptop's keyboard is not hot to the touch, the keyboard is a bit warm. But the touch pad and the rest of the laptop has the same temp that it would as if I hadn't turned it on yet.
