I wouldnt go so far to call the centrino platform a marketing gimmick but the power savings on this level of laptop would be next to nothing and id have to check other chipsets but using any of the 45 series chipsets I know of would limit your ram betwen 6.8 and 8 gb instead of the 12GB you all enjoy.
Both Centrino and Non Centrino, Monetivena based systems enjoy the same processors so there is no downside in that department. I dont believe it really has a place on a laptop of this size and power as the power saving you might get dont outweight the benifits of the P43 chipset.
EDIT - Though the specs list a 45 series chipset like the G51, i maybe partially wrong but still the PM45 doesnt support 12gb of ram. And if its an atheros wifi card its not centrino. P43 is a desktop chipset, I was told by someone else that was what it was in there. What does CPU-Z report? What does everest report as max ram?

Best I can do is google for ya, load into safe mode and use system restore to go back to before you removed the video drivers?
Or in safe mode install the nvidia drivers that are in the Driver Disk that came with the G71. -
-
-
the BIOS update in the ASUS web page is for the G71Gx, will it work for the G71Gx(BestBuy)?
-
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
Yes whichever chipset it runs all of the current ones in the 45 series do support dual channel ram.
The G71 is 3 slot should come with 3x2GB. The old rule of thumb was 2 sticks are better than 4 but not sure if that applies these days over all the performance differences were only something a benchmark freak would have noticed. -

Each stick throughputs dual 64 bit channels to the memory controller thats what dual channel is but it does require a matched pair.
Im not sure how the G71 handles it usually 3 sticks disables dual channel mode, i believe there are systems that run the matched pair in dual channel and the one in single channel. DDR3 is bringing triple channel memory though.
While the theoretical limit is double, benchmarks have shown the improvement to not be anywhere near what you would think it to be. -
Thanks for the help bob! rep! -

Yeah he seems to have removed that from the latest driver may have something todo with trying to maintain the whql status of the driver when benchmarking.

Andafoo if you look at your Nvidia control panel thing and if it is the right driver version than you installed it correctly
Good job. Your comp is working now. -
-
Original drivers were 179.30, and yes it will just say 185.85 even though you installed DOX 185.85.
Time for you to play some games xD! -
how do you install nvidia drivers past 179.3? I have the asus g71x and it says that I could only get drivers from the manufacturer which is asus. The thing is they haven't updated their driver in 4-5 months now..

Try here
Most people recommend a full clean install, i.e. uninstalling the previous drivers, rebooting in safe mode, cleaning out old driver files, and installing the new ones. -
Here's a direct link to Dox's drivers, they seem to be the most recommended drivers out there.
Uninstall the current Nvidia video drivers, restart into safe mode is what's recommended (I did normal restart didn't see a problem) use a program like Driver Cleaner.net, that's a link to a trial of it (it went from freeware to shareware). If you use Driver Cleaner.net you're only going to select to clean up Nvidia not other things like Nvidia DMW/etc.. I think (what I did). Then restart and install your new drivers and you're done.

does the asus g71x best buy version have the standard, hybrid sli, or hybird grpahics
-

Every G71 on the planet has standard.

So after I booted the computer up for the first time, it installed the new BIOS through the Asus Live Update, and it told me to set the default BIOS after bootup. I dont have this option when I press F2, so whats the correct method for getting this done. My computer still has the downclock problem during crysis. The first G71 I had didnt slow down at all after the BIOS update.
-
I was considering upgrading to this, but Ive got to say the higher temps and minimal performance difference is a no go. Id actually have to say I think I could beat these 3Dmark scores or atleast match them with my FX with an equvilant processor.
-
I just bought my ASUS g71 today from best buy and I'm experiencing some random blue screens out of nowhere... what should I do? The best buy in my location are out off stock for the G71s..
Even if I do exchange, do you think they will make me pay the restocking fee? -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Not if you tell them you're getting blue screens from... out of the blue.
I don't do much returns with Best Buy--and not for anything this expensive--but I think if you have a de facto defective item they won't charge anything. -
Is EVERY G71 from BestBuy screwing up??? It seems like there hasn't been a single poster without some issue that hasn't* warranted an exchange T_T
Then again, most people only come to such forums when they have an issue...
This thing worth buying or is waiting the more intelligent choice...? -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Cnet and the customers on Best Buy Online panned the laptop, too.
With the BIOS fix everything seems fine, though. Out of the box, though, it will have issues.
How confident are you in flashing a BIOS? -
Oh, I'm fine with fixing my own BIOS...way more confident in myself than the GS :O.
Think I'll pick one up tomorrow, after paying a $450 traffic ticket T_T. For which, of course, I blame the state of California for bankrupting the budget and forcing police to give out ridiculous tickets to pay their own salaries -_-

Drive Sweeper program works too when you want to clean residual regedits, etc in Safe mode, I believe its free, works well
3D mark 06 bench points 10300+ w/ 185.5 Dox Drivers, 1280x720, Not OC
Crysis warhead on high is running flawlessly, (except when theres a TON of smoke and particles)...only wish AA could function with high
However, Very pleased with new bios. Haven't had any problems on my laptop so far. -
Why are you guys running at 720? Yeah you are breaking 10k, but that isnt what most people run on a 1440x900 screen. Try 1280x800.

I just received my Zalman NC20000 cooler to use with my G71GX and although it is very nice, I'm not quite sure it's the best fan for this laptop. It seems like the majority of heat is generated by the back of the laptop on the bottom, and this is the only place the cooler doesn't have holes for the air to flow through from the fans. Sliding the laptop up a bit takes care of this problem although it leaves almost half of the laptop leaning off of the front of this cooler. Anyone else find another cooling solution? Would you suggest returning this fan for any others? Thanks!
-
Any G71GX owner mind to put a bottom picture of the laptop, i dont have access to even go check out Bestbuy as i dont live in the US. Just intrested into seeing where the vents are in this particular model to chose the right cooler for it, so i can preorder the cooler before i fly to US to buy the laptop.
Thanks, -
-
On a side note, I am not sure if anyone else's did this but, my Asus updater popped up and said it had a Bios update and it installed it, but is was not the newest one, it installed 1102 and the fixed (or should be) is 1201... just a side note
-
the fx has been an outlet item. my guess is gateway will bring out a new one within a few weeks with a 260. other than that imo its still a valid choice. the screen is brighter and more vivid with better angles and it has ddr3 ram and a better (9 cell) battery.
-
Ah, interesting. Well, I guess I can wait a week or two, maybe three. I'll keep an eye out for any announcements on these forums alongside Engadget and Gizmodo to see if anything pops up. Otherwise it's pretty much the G71 or the G51.

That vent is from the fan and corresponds to the top vent in the bottom of the notebook.
I'll check today after playing some games, but I don't think that bottom vent sucks in air, since the hot air is coming out of it just a few inches away. The fan could possibly be sucking air from the GPU/Primary HDD vents and blowing it out the back?
Edit: Got the fan blowing and the air only came out of the back vent not the bottom one, so maybe the bottom one does suck some air in. But the if the fan does suck air in from the bottom then why didn't they put the opening for it closer to the fan, or have a larger opening for it...
I got the Zalman NC2000 because of this, it'll arrive on Tuesday, I'll post if it gives me some nice temp changes.
To people who think the laptop is too hot: It's not. The G71 has only 1 fan, I think most 17" gaming notebooks do have 2 fans instead of one though.
So far we've mainly posted temps during stress tests, so the temps are going to be pretty high.
My max temps for being online for 20 mins, pretty much the same from temps I've had after 2 hrs of being online: Cores 43C, GPU 56C, HDD 40C.
From playing 1 hour of Prototype I remember my max temps were around: Core 58, GPU 77, HDD 45. Temps after playing 2 hours of Prototype 2 days ago were pretty much identical.
I'll post more specific temps later today/tomorrow, gotta find a infrared thermometer to take temps with. -
Yo everyone with the Zalman NC2000 should write a review for it. I mean like a short summary of if it works or not, and if you recommend it. Because that is the cooler I'm looking at. By the way this laptop does not run super hot. Was playing crysis for an hour last night and max temp it hit was 79. But that was at night so it will be a little different in the afternoon. However, I don't really see the laptop hitting 90c at all. Maybe 86ishc max on a really hot day. Also with a cooler I'm pretty competent that the laptop will never reach 80c (if it works.)
-
I'm talking more specifically on this model. Because I'm not too familiar with the G50 and as someone else motioned on this thread the laptop gets a lot hotter on the back vs the front, which is is where all the vents are located on the Zalman NC200 from what I've seen.
Also how long does it take your G71 to book up. Mine seems to be taking a while... -
And thanks a lot bob for the pics, i was just replying between boss interrupts lol didnt see your till now. Appriciate the comments and pics. -
Has anyone succesfully updated their Graphics Drivers to the latest version (186.03)? I tried doing it a few nights ago but it wouldn't let me update them. I was just wondering if anyone has used DriverSweeper or another program to succesfully update.
-
I haven't compared 186.03 vs DOX 185.85 but I'm going to guess DOX 185.85 is better. -
Here's an interesting review/blog of the G71V. The guy spent a month with it and blogged about what he liked/disliked about it
http://217.72.243.64/author/asus1/
not the new G71Gx but it's still an interesting read none-the-less -
-
They have releasd a new refiresh of the old 7805, only with a better CPU and a bigger HDD (7809), besides that, nothing different.
The Gateway has a little better screen, and a better cooling solution, but ASUS with the 260M GTX IMO is a better choice. -
-
Nah there are so many post with problems because the driver was released like 3 days ago. So until 3 days ago this laptop didn't really fit the purpose. However, Asus fixed everything.
