So does this laptop have hibernation sleep issues? If so we should start noting it in the Asus forums so they eventually patch it too because I like to use hibernate a lot and this is not the first time I read issues about it.

Even though there's different stop codes there should be a central cause to all of this. -
I just tried to recover using an image I made using Seagate Disk Wizard (same program as Acronis). It won't even boot off of the Seagate CD. The error page says:
"BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at virtial address ....
[snip]
Bummer, can't write to log on /dev/tty5!
console=/dev/console"
At least this error message is amusing. . -
^ It could be if something was installed or modified from the program. Considering no one else has reported a problem like this, I'd bet it was. If you dont have anything important on it yet, I'd just do a clean install (and not install kaspersky)
-
I'm not sure what else you could do. -
Actually, there was one other guy who had this very problem, who posted a few pages back, but he just took it back to Best Buy, so there's no known solution. -
-
. Can you get into the Express Gate OS? But you can't really do anything from it I think..
I've put my laptop in sleep mode a few times, but I was only testing how if it would work. I turn off my laptop at whenever I don't use it. -
If this hibernation bug is an issue, shouldn't we make some noise to their technical support or on their forums. At least let them know about it, maybe they can fix it, Asus is known to pop out alot of bios during their products lifetime...
-
^ remember this has 6 gigs of ram. hell, my fx had 4 gigs of ddr3 and it took a long time to start from hibernation. I'd guess a little longer than a cold boot. Hibernation would only be useful at critical battery, since sleep mode takes a bit more power to hold.
But unless you changed the HP's settings, it goes into sleep mode, not hibernate, when lid is closed. With hibernate, you could yank out the battery when unplugged, leave it for a year, plug it in and resume where you were. Its just turned off with the ram saved to the hard disk. -
I'm not actually sure it was in Hibernate - it was probably just asleep, as it had a full battery when I closed the lid, and I never set affirmatively it to Hibernate. I was just theorizing the problem was hibernation because some other person on the forum had that problem before.

w00t i just got home with myne from best buy. im unboxing as i type!
-
Did it come with the new BIOS? Or do you have to do all the grunt work? -
im gonna plug it in and let it charge for now, because i gotta go pick my dads car up from the shop with him.
BUT
the best buy associate who sold me the computer didnt seem to know about the bios problem and i asked him "did you guys fix the bios issue with this computer" and he said "uhh. If u pay for geeksquad optimization blah blah we'd do that"
so basically, the tamper evident seals werent broken on the box and i dont think they did anything to it. although i think cnets review had said that the live updated takes care of the bios issue painlessley
ill let u guys know more as it happens lol. -
I'm excited to find out. Keep the news flowing! Hopefully I get mine tomorrow!
-
i just fired it up, looks like it has 1102 as the bios. which i dont believe is the new one. im praying live update will grab it right off the bat for me, and that getting rid of whatever bloatware there is wont be to much of a hassle
windows is currently doing its little performance test on it. -
ok, still installing updates and what not on the new computer, but, i think im ready to install some games. the two most graphically demanding ones i have are warhammer online, and the witcher.
and where can i change the critical battery level action so i dont have to deal with the hibernate problem in the very off chance it reaches that point for any reason. -
So I've had this for almost a week now, and I'm having some issues. After playing CoD:WAW for about 10 minutes my FPS drops significantly and I have to reboot to fix it. The only other game I'm playing right now is Dawn of Discovery and I'm not having any problems with that game. The only thing I've done is update the BIOS and I did that right after I got the laptop last Saturday. I'm assuming this is the same issue that was happening with the old BIOS, but I'm not sure because I never played any games with the old BIOS. I haven't run any diagnostics because I haven't had time, I should be able to look into it more this weekend. Anyone else having this problem with the new BIOS?
-
FYI I tried using liveupdate and doesn't work. I suggest EZFlash.
-
click "power options"
For each plan:
click "change plan settings"
click "change advanced power settings"
Scroll down and click (plus sign next to) "battery"
click "critical battery action"
then choose "sleep"
Its really as simple as it gets. -
yea, my bad, i really should have looked a little harder before wasting a post like that.
edit:
also not gonna bother installing warhammer on it because lol. my subscription ran out yesterday.
so ill go with the crysis demo and The witcher and see what happens.
should i bother bringing my laptop cooler over to that lappy, or should it be fine for now, cause my g1 really had some heat problems imo. acording to speedfan, it was getting into the 104+ Celsius on certain components when being put under a gaming load. and idles in the hot zone lol -
^ lol its cool. when i said "simple" i meant easy to do.
-
-
... I mean, contact Technical support and Asus themselves via their forum...
-
Again. Another Bios Update Needed. Holy Hell. And I Just Bought Mine Yesterday.
-
I'm most likely going to buy this laptop this weekend but I would like to ask is the best buy version of the G71 worth it? Is this a computer that will last me at least 2 years?
-
My last ASUS product, a G1S, lasted exactly 2 years before the vid card failed, and it had a LOT of miles on it. ASUS is a quality product, and I have used them for years. You can't go wrong buying a G71. It was the natural choice when the G1S went down. I plan to repair it and sell it.
-
But I'm sure ASUS can fix this easily, right? -
I really hope the 667mhz RAM IS holding down the gaming performance.
It just means that when Asus fix this problem, we will have a better performing laptop lol
Has anyone tried "Lian Li NC-02" notebook cooler?
Seems like the fan location on it better suits the G71 than the Zalman.
Also, you can put 2 extra fans in it to make it a 4-fan cooler. -

Can anyone help. I uninstalled the stock drivers for Nvidia, safe moded, used driver sweeper and checked both nvidia's to clean. Then I booted normally and tried to install 186 drivers from Nvidia but I get errors when installing. Something I did wrong? Or does only Asus stock display drivers work?
Was I only suppose to check chipset and not display in driver sweeper? -
-
Try installing the drivers in safe mode after the uninstall. or try out dox drivers? (haven't tested nvidia's drivers yet, let us know if it works.)
-
-
So my only problem now is getting 186 drivers to work. If I can't get it to work I'll go for DOX.
I haven't tested hibernate yet because I heard of issues but I might take the plunge now... anyone else have success?
EDIT: So was I correct in checking both Nvidia options to clean in driver sweeper?
EDIT 2: OK so I tried to install the 186.03 Official NV drivers WITHOUT removing the stock drivers. The system tells me during installation I am not running windows vista 64 bit? ? OK...
I see people using 185.85 DOX but I can't even find them.
http://laptopvideo2go.com/drivers
I'm just worried I might install a wrong version. Are all DOX drivers compatible as long as the operating system is specified? -
grand finale im having the same message when i try to install the latest drivers from the nvidia site. it says "nope ur not windows 64"
also, has anyone verified yet the maximum memory of this notebook? crucial says 6, asus says 6, but all the models customizable by xotic and all that say 12....
and another slightly annoying but not really factor i found is that the LED lights from the bar on the back of the lid can be seen a little bit through the screen when the screen is turned off. -
"The manufacturer of this system requires that you download the driver for your GPU from their support site." -
-
Also, if anyone still has the bios before the 1201 update, please use CPUID to check the memory frequency. I am curious to see if it was right before they made the video card thermal policy change. -
Another thing somebody might want to try, is to turn off the Turbo Extreme in the BIOS. I'm thinking if the overclocking abilities are turned off maybe the divisor on the RAM will change. It would make sense Asus would do this with it enabled to make sure the RAM doesn't overclock with the CPU which in turn would under clock it like we are seeing. I would try it, but I'm at work with no access to my pc at the moment.
-
Hm. Maybe someone should take this up to ASUS?
-
I already have. I notified them today. But, unless all of us can check our RAM speed and also verify that they to are running at 667Mhz and send in a ticket, nothing will happen anytime soon.
-
maybe, but also consider there was nothing legally wrong with the graphics - they just did it to keep people happy; however, the ram is false advertisement. its a legal issue so i would think they would try and fix it.
-
! Let's let Asus know so they can correct the ram speed issue we are having. First the downclocking, now this... come on Asus - it looks like it's time to pop out another bios fix or something.
-
I've got an email ticket and a phone call with them in this morning. I told them the RAM divider needs to be 2:3 not 4:5 and they said thanks for the info and they would forward it to their supervisor. They also asked me to let them know if disabling turbo extreme in the BIOS would enable a different divider other than 4:5 but I can't do that until much later today when I'm back home with the PC.
-
Which email did you use to contact Asus support? -
I used the one on the Asus global site under support. It allowed me to put in my notebook, model, etcc. and then state what the problem is. The link is below. Here is a copy of what I sent in:

[Problem Description]
The BIOS is running the RAM divider at 4:5 which in turn is under clocking the RAM to 667MHz. The product specs clearly say this is 800MHz RAM speeds. To fix this Asus needs to update the BIOS to use a 2:3 divider. Please do this ASAP as this severely diminishes performance. This is happening on the newly released 1201 BIOS to fix the thermal policy for the video card down clocking at 82C. -
I brought this up a while ago but everyone brushed it off. I'll send in a ticket as well, because the 667mhz is kinda bs, especially because they advertised 800.... T_T
how does everyone think the vista to 7 upgrades gonna work. Cause basically My little piece of info that came with t he g71 says "when it comes out, get at us and we'll help you get your software..." -
I've got my laptop with me @ Work (showing it off
). I'll try turning off the Turbo Extreme in a sec
-
I should be getting mine a couple of hours. I'll check it as well.
