can you turn the lights on the back off? it will drive my folks crazy if they stay on while i'm in the living room
-
-
^ theres a way you can at least make them stay on instead of constantly flashing.
-
so you can't turn them off then? ...............................that's dumb
-
^^^ idk dont have it, yet. I would think they'd give the option though. i'll let someone else chip in that actually has one in hand. was just saying if that was enough. The flashing mode is super annoying though. Its always doing it even when idling.
-
When I had mine, I got it to only illuminate the "Republic Of Gamers" logo on the lid, as well as the light bar that goes across the bottom of the lid. The side lights were completely off.
-
nice, thanks
-
The guy seemed to be overly critical of the G71 given its target market and audience. It has the ability to OC however he didn't bother including it in the CPU compare task tests like they have done in other PC reviews.
I do wonder regardless why the 2.53 (P8700) was weaker in those tests compared to the slower 2.0Ghz CPU. -
Just got my G71.... I was able to negotiate the original price of $1150 by asking for the manager about the sudden price change and he said it was ok. Nice guy.
Gonna be so busy with this... cleaning out junk, updating drivers, reclocking GPU, testing CPU overclocking, undervolting, then playing some games.

-
Both lights that are un-shutoff-able are pretty subtle though so it should be no big deal. -
yes you can shut off all lights except the logo and the bar going across the back of it
my kids like it.. when all the lights are off I feel like I'm in a club, particulalrly if I"m playing some beats! -
http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/asus...l?tag=txt;page
"Asus includes a two-year, parts-and-labor warranty with the system; however, the battery is only covered for one year."
I'm curious why this line is here. They say it has 2 years warranty but then they say that this model is only offered at best buy, who's website only gives it one year. Whats the reason for this discrepancy. Any way I can get 2 years warranty from this? -
Really... is this where this thread is going... lights and warranties...
No benchmarks, no vids, no tests...
Who the heck is going to save the few of us who want to see the Asus G71GX in action?
I know the few who own this are in love with the laptop and are enjoying every minute they can play it especially the graphics feast for the eyes but toss a few bread crumbs down here would ya...
Jay and Bob, pop some teasers for us future buyers... -
Sorry no camera to give a video of gameplay.
Installed C.U.D.A.A.T.S. level 5, Realistic Shadows, Dx9.0, ToD mod.
Even thought I installed Dx9.0 in the displayinfo of Crysis it says it's using Dx10.
Played from the beginning to the first fight, I was getting an average of 23 fps. When I was running around like crazy it was down to 18-19. Sometimes it went as high as 30 or so.
All the G71's temps were fine except the GPU hit a max of 85C sometime while playing Crysis.
What other types of benchmarks/tests would you want to see?
Edit: Ran Crysis GPU Benchmark, I'm not sure if I did it right because of the custom stuff:
The average fps was around 25-30 most of the time, it dipped at the end. -
The price was just got bumped up by Best Buy, now it's $1199 instead of $1149
. I bought a ASUS G71, what test do you guys want? I'm going to return mine tomorrow because of random BSOD errors that keep showing up
-
That seems pretty bad for the specs. From what I read the G51 and the even the G50 can reach those frame rates. Have you tried setting any of the setting on high?
-
@bob1182006: Thanks bob, do the follow to urk out more frames! DX10 is worthless when you are using C.U.D.A.A.T.S and actually drops frames. Go DX9 by right clicking the Crysis shorcut icon on your Desktop and selecting "Play DX9" you should see a HUGE jump in frames because C.U.D.A.A.T.S takes advantage of DX9. You can also go to your start menu and click "Games", which is near the far right top of that menu. A new window should pop up and then right click the Crysis icon and a menu should come up, click "Play DX9". Post your frames with 1024 X 768 and then with Native res 1440 x 900. Try this with C.U.D.A.A.T.S Level 5 and then with Level 4, they are both actually almost identical! Level 4 will definitely give you even more frames as it removes blur and a few other things you won't notice. Don't mess with Crysis settings tab anymore unless to adjust screen resolution, C.U.D.A.A.T.S. adjusts everything for you (you'll see Custom instead of anything else). Also, turn V-sync off if you haven't already...
@hong314: bob1182006 is doing me a favor by running some teasers for me! Unlike other posters, he is the ONLY one running custom modifications with Crysis and posting benchmarks. This is only the first test though, I advised what he should do to achieve better frames while still looking way better than [vanilla] very high on Crysis. Why not try C.U.D.A.A.T.S hong314?
After using it, you'll wonder why Crysis doesn't look like this in the first place, ToD is Awesome! -
Even though it says that the settings are on low the Custom Cvars box contains all of the custom things to get you video settings as if you're playing on all High with some Very High.
Level 5 is a bit higher than the normal High settings.
Here's a test I did with all high settings, Dx10 and 2x AA though.
But the benchmark looks better with C.U.D.A.A.T.S. installed. -
! Thanks bob for doing this for me, it's great to finally see some benchmarks and tests finally!
-
You guys think the one at xotic pc is worth it?
-
my best buy just got em in stock today, im planning on makin the trip out there tomorrow (45 mins about) to check it out. if the screen meets my expectations, im pretty sure its gonna be mine.
if i do get it, im gonna be askin u guys about the to-do list when i first get it. -

More benchmarks this time w/temps:
gpu benchmark really dips at the end...
1400x960 is the closest res that the benchmark tool has to 1440x900
1024x768 Level 5
fps around 30-35
1024x768 Level 4:
fps around 35-40
1400x960 Level 4
fps around 30-35
I still prefer using Level 5 with native res since it's still playable and gives great graphics. -
for the longest time i thought it was. but....
Most people won't need the bluetooth... the screen that the lower version has is fine for gaming unless you want everything completely perfect which is somewhat pointless. You also get dual HD but that's pointless unless you need the space. 500GB should be more than fair, and you can get an external anyways.
OVerall for me, No. it isn't worth it un;ess you want absolute perfection which is rediculous. I ended up getting the dual-core model, after i SWORE i'd get the Xotic one. Its not worth it,, except for someone who needs perfection. -
Thanks again bob, those are some great frames (and temps)! Like you though, I'm probably going to be a Level 5 as well
(don't want to sacrifice those graphics either, CUDAATS is awesome!!) I'll drop my res though (1024 x 768) and have no AA to get some good frames. Thanks again for doing this for me, I don't know of any other tests you could do though
!
Fallout 3... I don't know...
Overall, You convinced me to get the laptop, thanks bob!
-
The BB G71 has only 1 HDD but it supports 2, so when you're close to filling up your 500GB you can upgrade to 1TB, or maybe get SSD (OS) + 500GB (data). -
Also, for the price of the xotic (2k), you can get an alienware with dual 260s. I don't see a hard decision there... -
I'm pulling this from the Asus g71gx (best buy) forums where Im also a member.
someones complaining about memory clock speeds, if anyone else that owns the computer can verify this it'd be nice.
The specs list says DDR2 800 MHz, and the DIMMs are marked that they are that speed, but the notebook is running them at DDR2 667. I don't see a setting in the BIOS to change the DDR2 speed. There is something like "Downgrade Memory Timing" which, when enabled, puts the timings at 5:5:5:15. When disabled, the timings are 6:6:6:18, but either way the RAM is still running 667 MHz.
How do I get the RAM running to spec?
anything? -
Memory
* 64-bit wide DDRII data channel
* Three 200Pin SODIMM sockets
* Expandable up to 6GB DDRII 800MHz
No problem for the benchmarks I ran. Already had the game installed just had to try out the CUDATTS mod. Don't have Fallout 3 though otherwise I'd try it out, didn't feel like buying it @ BB but looking at gameplay now it makes me want to buy it... But I'll buy it later when it's closer to $30 instead of $50. -
I don't need any of the extra features that the xotic one provides so I think I may just roll with the bestbuy one... -
So are the BB g71s still getting plagued buy the overheat issue that cripples gaming performance?
-
Where have you been?
You finally get back from your hangover from the July 4th celebration? Have you checked Best Buy's website? The Score of the laptop is going up due to everyone putting out righteous reviews of how the laptop now performs due to Asus fixing the past problem with a bios update.
So yes, grab the laptop now but be sure to upgrade the bios (it's easy) and then GAME! I can't wait to get mine! -
^... no. Its been rid of that for a little while now and talked about a lot... Theres a bios update (buying one now, it would already be installed). It wasnt overheating, just downclocking early. The g51 is the one that gets hot.
EDIT: da1writer beat me to it... -
you mentioned the bios needing to be updated manually, but i believe people have reported live update handleing it, no?
-
Yes, LiveUpdate does show it, but when I used it to "install" my bios upgrade, it didn't take. I had to put it on a USB Flash drive and use the BIOS flash utility as many others have done.

Why no Gigabit Ethernet, isn't this a pretty basic feature now? 10/100/NOT
-
I'll run some fraps tests with COH, Mass Effect and KOTOR2... speaking of KOTOR2 I installed/updated it and it wont launch I get an error.. Has anyone been able to run KOTOR2 on this? I'm not sure if the instillation got corrupted I'll try reinstalling
I may end up purchasing some of the newer PC games now that I can run them. -
speaking of the absence of gigabit Ethernet. whats that gonna mean for connection speeds? I'd probably be on wireless most of the time, but even my 2 year old g1 has 10/100/1000, would i never notice it unless i was doing a direct transfer over a network though the ethernet cable?
-
So if you have a home network and you are moving large packets of data from one to another and you have a true 1g network then you may notice a bit longer transfer times going to or from the 100mps G71.
I was just surprised that any "new" computer solution would be devoid of the 1g option, even just because of the lack of "marketing potential" as the cost difference between adapters would be a few pennies at best. -
Is it possible to upgrade wireless card in laptops?
-
^ Possibly, but not in the g71 which has integrated wireless. I don't see why you would though because the g71 seems to have one thats as good as it gets.
-
-
Unfortunately, my G71 has gone into a BSOD loop. It first did it after waking up from sleep (hibernate?) this morning, and now won't stop.
It will boot into safe mode, but running anything makes it BSOD. It won't even boot into normal mode. Each BSOD is a different message, and different stop error.
Any ideas? -
Most problems with waking up from hibernation are due to video drivers from what I've heard.
Did you install new drivers lately? -
Still running the stock video drivers. The only changes yesterday were installing MS Office 2007 Enterprise, Kaspersky Internet Security, and moving my files over from my other lappy. -
So it seems like the G71 does have 10/100/1000 at least we have one members confirmation. -
It could be one of those programs you had just installed.
About the Gigabit Ethernet discussion.
My Device Manager says that the Network adapter is:
Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0). -
