Originally the engineers wanted a vent there but after some testing, they realized that the presence of a large vent there actually decreased cooling since it decreased air flow over the CPU and GPU. Thus, they covered it up. If you were to take it out, you would get higher temps unless you had a cooler since the cooler would be blowing air straight up through it.

Ok, I looked around, and kanji is the grave key translated in japanese. This is the key (`/~) the one that opens the console. I can't open console in any games.
I played bf2 and they key for console is the grave, but when i hit that key it changes to kanji. What I'm wondering is if any one can open consoles with there g71's. Also I can't use any of the numpad keys like page up and end which I need for games. Theses keys work for typing an stuff, but I get annoyed at gamikng with them. -
I believe that the Asus G51 and the Asus G71 have some sort of driver installed that uses the ~ key to do something else within games. You can do a search of it online, I forgot where I found the solution to it, but the easiest fix would be to download something like autohotkey.
Use it to set the ~ key to one that you never use let F7 or something like that. -
To get more frames out of Crysis:
Install the CUDAATS mod in Crysis (@ level 4 or level 5- looks better than Vanilla high/Very High and runs better too), Play DX9 by right clicking the Crysis icon (or in GAMES on the Start menu, right click Crysis icon there to play in DX9...DX10 is worthless and drops frames), and overclock with Turbogear and you should see better frames. Also try 1024 X 768 for resolution and put NO AA.
Only tips I can give you...

And to repeat: What is the sound card on this people? Who is the maker? Realtek? -
For the G71GX from BB the SN should be 15 numbers not 10. Well mine's 15 numbers and when I put it in it accepted it.
Edit: The sound card is by Realtek, device manager just says "Realtek High Definition Audio". -
Ok, so if I look around I can find a driver fix though? So that autohotkey lets all the keys be whatever hotkey you want them to be. Is that just like reprograming the keyboard. I'm not the best on computers and stuff like this. I'm efficient, but that's about it.
I'm looking at details, and would remapping the keyboard work for this, or would you have to use the hotkeys part of the program. Thanks -
Thanks again bob
!
What are your thoughts from my posts a page back?
Is the audio good enough to not warrant an external soundcard (like the X-FI Surround 5.1) and my Razer Barracuda 5.1 Headphones?
Has anyone tried this yet for their realtek soundcard (on the G71GX):
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=92384&highlight=realtek -
When listening to youtube and stuff it's fine with the laptop speakers. But when playing Prototype/Assassin's Creed I need to use headphones or external speakers because the laptop is too quiet. With the volume at 100 I can barely hear the conversations in AC or Prototype. With the headphones I don't go above 50 and I can hear everything perfectly.
-
Whoops, bad link from my last post, you want to try these out Bob
!
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=92384&highlight=realtek
If these work well, I might just be happy with the laptop's sound
!
These add EAX support and Alchemy, and raise the volume and sound quality up a bit! This all depends though, is the Realtek audio card in the G71GX HDA (I'm guessing means High Definition Audio?) -
Downloading right now, will update what happens when it's done. If it doesn't work then I'll probably buy the Creative X-FI so I can have EAX support for games, I can get it shipped by tomorrow if I order in less than 1 hr lol.
Just installed it and it says that I have no audio output devices installed.. Device manager says that the driver cannot be loaded.
Rolled back the audio drivers, now it won't automatically switch to my headphones when I plug them in. I'll just buy the Creative X-FI and use that for my headphones/speakers. Gonna also buy some Sennheiser HD555's, was going for the Razer Barracudas for the 5.1, but I don't need a headset and I don't play fps games where directional sound is very useful.
Re-installed the Realtek hd audio manager and now everything's back to normal. I think I got the volume to go up alot too, in the Realtek HD Audio Manager > Sound Effects and check the Loudness Equalization option, that made the ping from windows from a 7 to about a 65. Wonder if I can finally hear the low battery warning! -
Thanks again Bob for trying it out for me, I guess I'll most likely be buying the Creative X-FI Surround 5.1. No biggie, I most likely was going to buy it anyway due to the fact that almost all my games are FPS
! Need that 5.1 to hear creepy stuff (F.E.A.R) or get that sense that I'm in the jungle (Crysis). Can't wait to pop some game on the G71GX! Sadly my local Best Buy no longer has them in stock even if I could get it right now (they went FAST!) I can wait after my move I guess, I really want this laptop
!

Tilde works fine for me in most games with consoles but some games you have to set up the icon shortcut as usually -DEVMODE or something (Crysis for example). Left 4 Dead console worked immediately.
As for the numpad it works fine for me. Silly question but is NumLock off? I haven't encountered any issues.
As for the speakers (Altec Lansing) and sound hardware (Realtek) I like it and only find it quiet in some games so I just headphones. Sound quality is pretty good, above average or maybe great but not spectacular. -
I don't really remember the details regarding the driver so you'd probably have to google around. As for autohotkey, I'd imagine that it would be pretty simple. Note that I haven't really used it per se.
Also guys regarding the volume: I remember seeing a volume option in my G51's BIOS. Maybe its in your G71 BIOSes too and you can turn up volume from there. -
It might be silly to think of this little detail but with the non-bestbuy G71 there is apparently 2 lights that you can change between 16 different colors. I was thinking they are maybe the two at the bottom under where you rest your wrists. Does anyone know if the colors of those can be changed?
-
I was planning on getting some 5.1 headphones just for those 2 games, I know F.E.A.R. is going to get alot creepier with the 5.1. But I want to use mine to listen to my mp3 player too so I can't use the Razer headphones. Oh and at Amazon.com the X-FI is like $5 cheaper ($84) than @ Creative's website ($89).
Whoa thanks I just found this out xD, Direct Console > LED Light > Advanced > Settings, click the picture of the 2 LED's on the front, Choose Always - Light on or Flash 2x/sec on a fixed color OR by Vol of base speakers - Flash w/varied color.
-
It's not the numpad not working, just ingame it's annoying were the keys like page up and stuff don't work, and the other keys have a use. Oh well, I just will reconfigure. see this is one of those things i am not really experience on. I don't know what devmode is or how to run it. I remember from something else that you have to modify something to have it included, or am I completely off. Thanks and sorry for being a noob.
-
Most of the time you can just check gamefaqs and go to the specified game and go to the cheats and it will tell you if you need to edit the shortcut for the console or not.
I am looking for a case/bag for this hefty laptop. Already tried two that said "fits 17" laptops" and guess what? They didn't fit this SOB! lol. Anyone have suggestions? -
Anyone have installed Windows 7 RC and be able to use Direct console 2.0? I just installed W7 and the Direct Console for G71 fails to launch.
-
Go for good stereo heaphones, most of 5.1 are gimicks. There are lots of good options out there. I have lots of heaphones, and imo one that works pretty good without an dedicated amp is
Sennheiser HD-280 Professional Headphones
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1247941608&sr=8-2
There way to many options there. But if you want something easier to travel, and you plan on using them for playing online with vent/ts, and you have the money,
E.D.G.E. Acoustics GX400 Enhanced Definition Gaming Earphones
http://www.amazon.com/E-D-G-E-Acous...UTF8&coliid=I1RTOBJCJZAHG&colid=1482BANTLP3VL -
Can't settle for stereo headphones, I NEED 5.1 in ALL of my games, I like my surround. Have you tried Razer's Barracuda headphones? I have them and they are freakin awesome. It isn't faked surround either, the Barracudas have each of the cups with a rear, front, Center, and subwoofer (and MAN can it bump- too much causes me to have a headache), so it REALLY is 5.1 and I can hear it too (it actually sounds better than my old logitech 5.1 speakers - you can hear things alot better than normal headphones too) It literally has 5.1 plugins like a 5.1 pc speaker setup unlike other headphones using usb and faked surround.
Give the Barracuda's a try Abula (you can find them online or at your local Compusa), you'll change your mind right away that THESE 5.1 headphones aren't a gimmick- they are a REAL 5.1 headphones. It has a Mic and are very comfortable by the way. (You'll have to buy the X-FI Surround 5.1 though...)
Well no matter what I already have the Barracuda's, I just need to grab the X-FI Surround 5.1. Everyone knows onboard audio isn't as good as either external or PCI (disregard #2 - this is a laptop
!) Plus I'm a fan of EAX (I know it's reverb and such, I still like it) and I think the EAX [software 2.0 profile] is broken on the Realtek Audio cards (from what I read somewhere else). If I can modify the Realtek drivers with custom ones (the ones I posted earlier) whenever I buy the G71GX, I may just forget using my headphones and not bother with 5.1 (and settle with the 4 speakers). It kinda depends; I don't plan on moving the laptop often once I buy it, the G71GX will most likely be chilling on my desk so extra side equipment/accessories (laptop cooler, external souncard, headphones, etc.) is not going to be getting in the way.
But everyone's different though and settle with things, you can't shove everything from a desktop into a laptop you know. I'll try though
...
-
The X-Fi card only does stereo sound. So you can't get EAX in games with the Barracuda's no?
I was thinking about getting the Megalodon but eh I'll stick to great stereo with EAX effects.
Edit: Nevermind, I see which X-Fi you've been talking about, the USB one that has 5.1 support.
I hope the USB connection isn't too slow for games though. -
Hopefully not too much... that would suck if it slows things down
. If the G71GX produces the EAX fine, I may just opt out the external sound card - I still don't have this laptop yet...
-
Does anyone have installed the Windows 7 and unable to use the Direct Console features? I have just installed Windows 7 and can't launch the program, I also have tried to use the compatibility mode without any success, any help?
-
a week ago I have place the order for ASUS G51 from Best Buy online and planned to have my sister pick it up at the Best Buy store when she traveled to the States (as I currently am living in Thailand). The confirmation and E-mail sent by Best Buy stated clearly I have ordered G51. However, as my sister comes back from the States last evening, she carries along the ASUS G71 model from Best Buy (as she didn't notice until the notebook arrived here at my doorstep). The receipt she got and the E-mail sent after the store pickup confirmed that she has purchased the G51 and the credit card deducted is of course G51 price. Now honestly, I would prefer to have G51 model but I don't want to send it back and have to pay 200 U.S. dollars at the sake of shipping it back. On the other hand, if I choose to keep it, I am afraid that Best Buy will charge the additional fee to the price of G71 on the credit card. Any suggestions? Will I be charged later on for 200 $ more?
-
No way they could charge you and win.
-
I'm sorry but what do you mean exactly? After all, it is not my fault but rather the Best Buy Staff who brought my sister the wrong model. She had no idea how it looks like, the only thing she knows is that the receipt upon the pickup stated the purchase of G51 and the price is also the G51 price.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
He means "There is no way Best Buy can charge your card and be sucessful about it"
-
Oh I see, sorry man..I'm not a native speaker and thanks Forge for the clarifying things for me!
So...This is a trade off for me, get a better spec. and screen with something a lot bigger and assumably bigger than the G51 -
3 More weeks until I get this laptop, I can't wait! My move is all that's holding me back from buying and also wife said I have to sell my desktop to my mother-in-law first. Hopefully Best Buy doesn't keep raising the laptop's cost, I was kinda urked when I saw they upped the price of the G71GX by about $50 (the G51 still hasn't gone up in price)...
I don't know what could warrant a $50 price upgrade?
I would say the bios maybe but every new owner has said that they had to upgrade the bios anyway. Is the price upgrade for the "effort" in fixing the thermal issue?
Where's more videos of this thing people?
Or at least more reviews by users or computer critics (websites).... -
I'm guessing they got some complaints with people saying it use to be the $1149 price tag. Best Buy decides to take make the customers happy and revert back to the price. Good for me and others, let's hope the prices don't fluctuate anymore...
-
You might be right, but why did they raise the G51, my guess is more related to inventory, with the raise mantained only to the G71, $200 could made a lot to go for the G51 causing more overstock on G71, which is what this new $100 might steer more customers toward G71, i just hope this price sticks for a week.
-
Well the G71 is in this week's BB ad paper, so I would assume the $1149 is the weekly sale price and will go back to $1199 next Sunday.
-
Huh... does BB have a price guarantee? Since I bought on Thursday I'd like my $50
-
I went to BB today and got 50 bucks back
-
Yes they do but I am not sure it applies to "restocking fee" items like laptops.
Typically retailers offer you price matching because if they didn't and the item was within its return period you would just return and rebuy at the lower price. Not to mention they would then be stuck with an open box item.
Now with a laptop return you would eat the restock fee so you wouldn't do it to save $50 while loosing close to $180 in a restock fee. They know this so if it is not spelled out they may play hardball.
This is however a moot point for anyone who is a Premier Silver Reward Zone member as they don't pay restocking fees and have a 45 return period on every product (yes every product includes laptops
)
EDIT*** Well there ya go PMac got his/her $50 back so that at least is promissing for those who paid more last week. -
Will i be able to upgrade to an SSD in the future? lets say something like
Corsair 128 GB Internal Solid State Drive
I mean would windows activation have a problem with me upgrading hd or will the computer be able to power both hd? -
hmm i bought it at 1200 with store credit from accidental warranty.. so i might be able to get $50 out of this.
-
Any way to disable the republic of gamers startup sound? Gonna be annoying not being able to take it to class
-
iirc from my W90 days, it has to be done in the BIOS, so when you start it up go into the BIOS and there should be an option there to turn it off.
-
Any of you guys get a BIOS update on ASUS Live? It's asking me to upgrade to BIOS 1302, should I do it? I'm just being cautious just in case there are bugs on it, I wouldn't want to have to install the previous version again.
-
do it. i think its the gpu fix
-
What was wrong with the gpu? I thought the 1202 fixed the 82 degree problem. Maybe it fixed ntools... because when I tried to run that I got blue screened.
And has anyone figured out how to make the front lights change with bass? I set it up in direct console under advanced but no matter what I play it doesnt change color. Not really needed I guess but I would like to see it function. -
Got my $50 back ($53 actually with the tax) so thanks BB!
Made me even happier with my purchase. Now I just need to figure out how the heck these GPU overclocker things work to bump the card up to it's full stock speeds.
-
Bios 1201 fixed the thermal issues. 1302 disables and hides bluetooth option if it doesn't exist according to their website. I'd just stick with 1201.
-
Hey as an ex-W90Vp owner I find it a breath of fresh air even if its a menial update/fix. It says at least to me that Asus is not on fire and forget mode with the G71GX.
-
Quick question, can you guys either see if nibitor can edit your GPU BIOS or send your vBIOS to me?
Just start GPU-Z, right next to the BIOS version number, click the little button thing and save the file. Let me know and I'll pm you with my email. -
Oh I see. That's all? Pretty lame. I guess that's fine. It always makes me sad that I have a Bluetooth "on" option when I don't even have Bluetooth on my computer so I guess that would help.
Anyway, does the G71 RX05 have an "illuminate keyboard" option that I just don't know of or what? I'm using it in the dark and I realized it's kind of hard to use the other keys other than the QWERTY keyboard. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
The G71 does not have an illuminated keyboard.
The G51, G60, and I think a U-series unit has them. -
Just turn up the brightness really high on your screen, I do that for my wife HP Business computer all the time, can see the keys just fine (I also have it plugged in all the time too).
