What kind of settings does crysis run on this thing on native res and 1200x800?

Not sure about 1200x800, but on native res 1440x900 I ran high settings smoothly 25+ FPS with DOX drivers no overclocking. With CUDA mod it can run very high smoothly. I'm sure without CUDAATS mod if you knew how to overclock the GPU it could run very high vanilla smoothly. I'm sure with 1200x800 it should be a cinch for any settings.

Oh yeah I haven't used AA though in any case..

How would i go about learning how to overclock the GPU?

And how easy is it to use and monitor the overclocking software?

    Overclocking is very easy.

Personally, I use SetFSB for overclocking the CPU, and RivaTuner for overclocking the GPU. Some people use nVidia System Tools/nTune for their video card, but for some reason I get bluescreened when I try to use nTune.

When you overclock, you want push it so you get a performance boost without errors and manageable heat. HWMonitor is a good program to use to monitor your heat.

When you overclock a GPU in Rivatuner, you can select the frequencies of core speed, shader, and memory. I don't know the numbers for the G71 off the top of my head, but I know they're unclocked from their official speeds. You can "force" the computer, through RivaTuner, to use the right speeds of 550/1375/950.

Well that's the easy method. Doesn't it reset though? By editing the BIOS it's a permanent change until of course you flash the BIOS again.

Software overclocking is like overclocking for dummies.

I am a dummy. I am not going anywhere near a BIOS flash unless I absolutely have to.

I was just browsing thru youtube for info to see Besbuy runing, and i found the following

While its not exactly the BB model, seems nice to see the back open and getting some action.

Nice find, according to the specs he showed, it looks like a G71GX-RX05 but from another country (ie branded with different number) and a bit of a different color scheme.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what a good laptop cooler would be for the G71? Not just assumptions... but actually has some data to show how much cooler the laptop will run? I don't want to spend 50 bucks on something that only drops it by 1 or 2 degrees.

I am using external display... on desktop sounds work via HDMI cable but when I try to play games on the external LCD TV I can't get sound to work. Anyone have any ideas? Video displays fine, but no sound.

Edit: K got it to work. Just set it as default device. Weird that you need that despite it working on the desktop but for in game you have to...

Right click on the sounds icon in the corner go to properties specify you want HDMI audio out , if that doesnt work just try the other ones that are available but that should do the trick.

The only thing I can suggest that works is editing BIOS and flashing it. I might test out Rivatuner later but I'm sure others have had success. Maybe you should just try to clean install the drivers again?

I'm still on edge about going through rivatuner or doing it the BIOS way. It's just because I haven't needed to yet. All games have run pretty well thus far.

Another thing, I keep losing GB but not putting anything on? Is it system restore creating points?

Yes, I lost about 5-8GB in a week because of restore points, I made the amount of space that Vista can use for restore points from 60GB to 10GB. Here's a guide I used to do it.

Each restore point uses up about 1 GB on my computer, so 10 restore points seems a reasonable amount, not like 60 restore points lol...

It's because the current version of RivaTuner doesn't support 185.85, Dox or otherwise. At least in base configuration.

    Try this.

Open up Rivatuner. Go to the Power Use Tab. (Optional: Don't be scared of that big warning). Expand the RivaTuner/System section. Go to Force Driver Version and enter the value 18585. After that, look down at the series of little buttons on the bottom of the window. One is "Hexidecimal display. Uncheck it.

    Ta-da.

Went to Best Buy to replace another DVDRW Drive for the desktop I'm selling (to my mother-in-law) and saw the G71GX at Best Buy for the first time. It sucks that I'm in the process of moving :(! The laptop looks so sweet and they had a few still in stock...
I keep telling my wife we should grab a Best Buy Credit card but she just cut the last Credit Cards (paid off) and said no more credit cards- I can wait.
    >.>
I'm thinking of buying the laptop anyway and face the consequences later :D!

^ thats not worth it (besides maybe you wanted the most expensive quad). for $150 you get the quad and keep warranty. i'd get the dual though and get a good quad years from now. a quad is pointless right now, the duo will run things faster. wait and buy the processor in a couple years.

Well my unveiling was done at night when the house was quiet but the HDD did seem a bit "clicky". It seemed to quiet down after setup. The G51 HDD in comparison was much quieter.

I figure my G71 is due for an SSD anyway as the one thing I wasn't overly impressed with regarding the G71 was the speed of the HDD.

yeah I noticed that when my G71 is loading a lot the hard drive does seem to get very "clicky" ....arg I never cared for seagate hdds anyway. I think a good investment would be to buy a 500gb Western Digital scorpio and copy the OS onto it, then use the seagate for media.

does the dual core version have 2 HDD bays? i hope to g-d that it does

edit: it does have a second bay. If the G71 doesn't support RAID, how would it work? basically like a giant flash drive?

If you put in another hard drive? It'll act exactly like another hard drive.

I'm not going to even try to RAID my twin HDDs. I might break something.

Well, in simple terms, yes, it's like a flash drive you can't remove.

Depending on your expertise, you can mount a whole new OS onto it (i.e. have Vista on your stock hard drive and put Linux into the second hard drive), among other things.

Boneheaded people like me just use it for extra storage.

For example, on my G51, I have my critical files (OS, programs, work) on the Main Drive C. Media Drive Z has my movies, music, and games.

The Elements F drive is a USB external drive, not a third HDD. And my HWMonitor temps are high because I took it through some game trials.

At this moment in time I have essentially the same storage space as a reseller A1 variant. I could have gone for a 500GB model, but I prefer the 7200 rpm.

Hrmmm. I can't say that I noticed any overly annoying sounds coming from my HDD when starting up a disc.

Typically is hard to hear anything over the DVD/CD absurdly fast initial spin cycle. I will check later and see but for now I would have to say, it was nothing that seemed out of the ordinary; and I was paying very close attention because I was doing my side by side comparison of the G51Vx that I was in the process of deciding between.

    Can someone answer me this...
The G51VX and G71GX both have different case bottoms (from what I can tell at Best Buy).
G51VX= Big circle near the bottom right (nearest to the screen)
G71GX= Vents only? Best Buy even had something strangely missing on the bottom of it (near the front of the keyboard)...

Does this mean the G51VX has a giant [1] fan and the G71GX has no fan whatsoever?

Is this the reason why the temps on the G71GX are higher than the G51VX?

I originally bought a G51VX and ended up returning it because I did not like how hot it ran and thought it was a pain. However, I did take the casing off the G51 and that large circle screen thing you see by the exhaust fan is actually nothing. NO air is vented through that screen because there is a plastic piece on the other side preventing this.... Sadly if you look closely there are tiny little vents all over the place and thats where the air goes into.

I returned my G51 for the G71.... Due to the larger casing and larger cooling system, the temps are a lot cooler. The G71 fan exhausts to the back of the laptop instead of the side. Similar slots in the bottom of the casing is where the intake air goes into.

I also believe the thing you say is strangely missing would be the battery. Best Buy always run off the AC so nobody comes and steals a backup battery haha

Got my G71 last night from BB. Really like this machine, I did a side by side with a 7805u I was going to go with. The 7805 is now headed back to TigerDirect :) The keyboard is clearly better on the G71. Out of the box it scores much better, and I like the increased GPU capability. The software overclock is a nice feature that the 7805 lacks, meaning I was limited just to doing a CPU upgrade. Down the road if I need to pop in a new CPU in the G71 I can as well. My heat isn't bad at all.

oh, ok- thanks for letting me know, I was so curious over the bottoms of each of the cases.
Since you have the G71GX, can you answer one more thing for me.
    The audio:
How are the 5 speakers on this thing?
What audio card is in this/ the maker?
The reason I ask is because after I buy this laptop (very soon), I was planning to grab an external soundcard (Creative's X-FI Surround 5.1)
    http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=209&subcategory=669&product=17751&listby=
to enjoy my audio with my 5.1 Headphones I already own and enjoy:
    http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-audio/razer-barracuda-hp1/

I know some don't like Creatives recent sound cards (or Creative themselves) and think X-FI is worthless in some games but I feel other wise. I like X-FI in my games, especially Alchemy which tries to put 5.1 back into old games since Vista KILLS some of them...

it only has 4. they are quite loud for a laptop. i mean, some laptops do get louder but have HUGE distortion. You can max these without worrying about that. I just watched a movie with friends on this last night with mpc and I had to turn the volume boost up a bit in mpc but it still was good quality and easily loud enough for us.

most usb sound cards take up a good amount of processing and from how good this one is I wouldnt bother buying a usb card.

Ok, I can't find my post, but anyway.

When running crysis, sometimes it gets laggy, but I don't think it is downclocking issue. I check my GPU temperatures and they are only 70*C.

Also, I can't open console in crysis and I still can't figure out how to hit pgdown and end. I've tried various buttons like alt, shift, fn (even though not blue) I'm gonna check the manual now don't no why I didn't.

    Thanks.

Well, I may officially be retarded. I went on Asus's site to register and I cant find my S/N number. I looked on the bottom and there are no numbers labeled "SN" and none of them are 10 digit. I looked on the box and it has the P/N and Item numbers listed, etc but then has "S/N #" and its blank. Is it possible one somehow wasnt assigned or am I just overlooking it?

don't register the computer online yet. As long as it isn't registered, the warranty isn't active yet. or at least it works that way with most companies (think XBOX360/WII/PS3 type of thing)

Putting a dvd into the drive I can hear the drive spinning pretty loudly, compared the vista's ping when you change the sound level it'd be about a 30ish.

Is it on the other side of the box? There's 2 labels with the P/N and SN and one of them is blank and the other one should have a label with the SN#. Other than that, it should be on the bottom of the laptop.

^^^ thanks! It was on the other side. Yeah it was on the laptop but not labeled..... BUT its not a 10 digit number and when i had entered it in Asus's site (i originally guessed it was the SN) the site said it was invalid and should be a 10 digit number. I had selected the G71GX (BestBuy) in the menu so its looking for the right thing....
