Asus Update sucks anyway, others have said it screws up the bios update sometimes (even if it says it did, some components might not have moved over). I have seen people also state that after updating to 1302 the thermal problem comes back. Why even update to 1302, it's useless anyway - it just takes the bluetooth icon off if you don't have bluetooth? 1201 is the better bio and shouldn't be updated whatsoever...

First of all i would like to say that everyone posting here is my hero, i spent a lot of time looking up laptops but when i found the g71 and this forum my decision was made. Now i just have a couple of questions that might have been answered, so sorry for asking them again but i could not find the answer i was looking for so far.

    1. I read a lot of things on here talking about overclocking and different programs that will increase speed and performance on games such as crysis and i will probably get them and get use to them, but my question would be what kind of gaming can i expect with just out of box setup?

    2. From what i have looked up so far the g71 doesn't seem to have a big heat problem like the g51 faces but how hot does this thing get. I will most likely get a cooling pad with the computer but is it absolutely necessary to have one if i'm gaming?

    3. Not as important of a question just curious if anyone plays world of warcraft with this computer what settings do you play WoW at? fps?

thank you for taking the time to answer, i greatly appreciate it.

Hey didn't see anyone answer you're question exactly. You can shut off the front lights but not the ones behind the monitor, only dimmer I think. I try to keep it as inconspicuous as I can.

Yeah there is a double typing issue. No fix yet though. Asus needs to hear more complaints to do anything about it.

    1. You can expect high settings on Crysis maybe about 25 fps out of box. With DOX drivers you can get up to 30 on max. The turbogear program to overclock CPU doesn't seem to affect Crysis so I'm guessing the GPU is the main bottleneck but hey 25-30 is good, and if you use the CUDAATS mod for Crysis it runs better.

    2. I have played a lot of games and without a cooling pad I never went above 82C. Cooling is good in this unit IMO.

    3. Sorry don't play WOW but to be honest, I don't see Blizzard games being a challenge for this laptop. Maybe Diablo 3 and SC2 if there are a lot of units on screen but I bet you can still easily get smooth play with it comes out.

i don't find RTS that big of a deal as a challenge. How can it really be that challenging? remember zerg-rushing in the original Starcraft? that is ALOT of troops, and you don't even need to have a crappy processor to do it. a sub-crappy processor would work.

I just got my G71, and got into mess that i might be overblowing it, but sure its discomort to say the least. I usally build my own desktops but due to recent job change i needed a laptop to play while on the road, so the g71 seems like an ideal computer for the job.

So i powered it, and everthing went fine. I tried to update windows and got stuck at no SP2, i let it go a day, install some other stuff and still no SP2 in the windows update, not sure why is this happening. But moving on, there is not as much bloatware but there is some, so i started unistalling stuff, everthing kinda went fine till google desktop, where WOW said i had it still runing when it was already uninstalled, and that it might cause conflict.

So i want to reformat, mostly to have the same feeling as i do when i build my desktops, not sure if im gona be able to, but maybe someone can help me out here. I have a OEM vista 64 home premuim sp1 at home (from my desktop), and thats what im planing to use. Now i just browse the Driver DVD..... so much stuff there that im not even sure what i need or even what should i install.

This is what im planing to do after the clean format (oriented mainly by my destkop experience), if you find something wrong or something that you might think its better pls feel free.

    - Reformat with an OEM Vista64 SP1
    - Update windows to the latest patch (not sure if i need to install network first or will windows recognize the network card)
    - Install Antivirus.
    - Update Chipset
    - Install Intel matrix storage
    - Install Video drivers (probably DOX)
    - Install Sound (not sure if CD or use the newest Realtek).
    - Install or Update network n wifi card drivers
    - Install Keyboard n mouse (or touchpad)

Software not sure what i should, probably Direct Console for turning off the lights, Turbo Gear for OCing.... IDK what eles.

The difference between StarCraft modern RTS games is that the original Starcraft didn't use 3D graphics. They were images scripted in a way so that they moved correctly on screen. Pulling an example out of my anoos, the movement scripts would make ZergZerling.imagecollection play frames 10, 15, 20, and 25 if the Zergling was moving left to right.

True 3D games take a beefier GPU and CPU. God, look at Supreme Commander.

Just a side note - my laptop was on asus power saver last night which i had not gotten a chance to change to sleep instead of hibernate at critical battery (because you normally dont see it). Well, battery went low, it hibernates, i turn it on later and it comes out fine. This is with the 12XX bios. So, apparently our laptops CAN hibernate.

SP2 never showed up for me, even after 50+ updates, I had to manually download it and install it.

To do a clean install just click F9 when the laptop is starting up, this will access the recovery partition and you can use that to do a clean install of windows w/o most of the software. After you do that just put in the Driver Disk that came with the G71 and install drivers and leave out things you won't use, Power4Phone (P4P) and such.

Good to know for those users that need hibernate. I guess it was just an isolated problem before.

Just read this on another thread by zakazak:
If you directly install dox drivers without any other driver, u wont have hibernate mode (i tried it out.. after installing the normal 179.48 driver i got the hibernate mode back)

What gpu drivers are you using Flaring Afro? I guess it could be that using dox drivers could remove the hibernation option and lead to problems when trying to hibernate.

Download here. I haven't seen any performance increases or any big changes to Vista though. It is a 300MB update (Vista/Server08+5 languages) so I wasn't expecting anything big.

Just letting you G71 owners know that the G71's vBIOS cannot be edited by NiBiTor so if you want to either undervolt your GPU or overclock it more permanently, you're probably out of luck unless you can edit it without using any 3rd party programs.

Were you on AC when you installed it? I couldn't find anything about the benefits of using SP2 instead of staying @ SP1 so I wouldn't bother upgrading unless you're having problems with SP1.

Like upgrading the bios to the 13xx version when the 12xx one is just fine since it has the best fixes.

Why are people complaning about not being able to over clock you cpu that is a "non issue" you payed for a 2.5 you got it and its obvious and proven that asus specs aren't reliable and asus dosent even claim you can overclock the cpu on this unit though they don't say anywhere that you can not, dose your computer work as advertised? mine dose to about 90 percent spec (being the useless S/PDIF) and thats a spec that is advertised to function expecting even adervtiesd spec to work is apparently asking alot from asus asking your g71 to preform beyond that well, as you can see is asking to much, so be happy that your g71 works at all cause 1150.00 is to much to pay for a paper weight

No compatible clock generator for SetFSB has been found yet. Someone should go find the PLL of their motherboard and contact the programmer of SetFSB and ask him (very nicely) to add it to his next release.

    Dude, chill out.

Well, my 10 day old G71 went belly up today. Can't boot into safe mode, etc; Completely bombs. I haven't even had a chance to upgrade the drivers or anything :( There's a quick flash of a BSOD and then the screen goes black. Not good :(

    What happened to it?

Does the computer boot up but can't go into windows or do you not even have the ability to go past POST?

If you just can't get into Windows, then it probably means that either your hard drive is bad or your OS was corrupted.

Yep, I can get past POST to the boot screen for Vista, but no further. I tried using a Vista recovery disk and the blue screen happens just loading that. Unfortunately it's not too descriptive, just that it's a STOP error. The fact that it's occuring even booting off the recovery CD is bad :(

Hmm....what happens when you try to enter safe mode? Does it hang at a specific file or does some other error pop up?

Also, try using the recovery partition on the hard drive if nothing at all works. I think its one of the F# keys but forgot which one. Just try around for a bit and you should figure out which one.

Safe Mode does the same thing as normal boot. It gets to a certain point and then there is a flash of the BSOD followed byt he screen shutting off. I guess I'll have to try the recovery partition. Not cool, I have some software on there that is hard licensed to the OS/Hardware so now I'll have to beg them to reset it. Bleh!

The best way to get rid of the BB bloatware would be to do a clean install correct? I know I need to use the Asus Recovery DVD to do a clean install, but I don't really know what I need to do after I put the DVD in... Halp!

Also, to the overclocking thing, do a search in this thread. Its not hard and the software came with the laptop. Theres even a button for it...

within 14 days, you should be able to exchange it no matter what (unless obviously spilled on or dropped). im 99.9% sure its a 14 day satisfaction.

call them up and ask them, but say you are thinking off buying a laptop NOT RETURNING ONE. best buy is quite the liar of a company once you put them into a position where they lose money.

I just got this laptop, clean installed from the recovery disk, put in the drivers disk when it told me to, and now the drivers are not functioning. I can't connect to the internet even though my drivers are up to date, and the trackpad doesn't work among other things. Should I save the drivers onto a flash drive and then install them onto my laptop from there?

It seems that there is an issue installing anything but system recovery on this unit some other people mentiond it as well I would just try using the recovery partition and see if you can at least get full function or when you did a clean install did that get deleted? if so try selecting each yellow check mark in device manager for reinstalling and pointing to the drivers disk and repsective driver folder and re install each driver (allthough if there is allready a driver installed uninstall it first)

Back on topic, Im getting the double tap keyboard thing as well. About every 60 words or so I get a double letter. Its happened enough I know for sure it isnt me. I wont be using my laptop keyboard much when my usb one arrive but its still a bit of a bummer.

Another note, the sound device manager doesnt auto switch to hdmi when its plugged in nor switch back to speakers when its unplugged. I actually prefer this because winamp wont spaz on me and crash from switching sources if i have to unplug it for a second but for most people this will be very irritating...

Put in the driver disk again after you do the recovery, I did this and it installed ALOT of drivers, Nvidia drivers, keyboard/touchpad drivers, etc... plenty of stuff that wasn't even installed that I thought should've been installed. There was also some useless junk like P4P, Splendid, etc.. that I left out.

Just saw the g51/71 for the first time today in best buy. I got to say the G71 looks much better in all design respects.

G71 Keyboard- Feels almost like a real external keyboard. The G51 keyboard looks horrible for gaming. Very apple-esque.

The lid on the g71 keyboard looks very slick. The porshe type badge is very elegant looking. I was not impressed by the g51 lid at all. The transformers design is just painted on not seprate pieces like i thought.

Im for sure getting the G71 in a couple weeks. Could not test out the computers they had some proprietary demo software thats stupid bestbuy put on there.

I felt the same too. You made the right decision. G51 owners seem to want to convince themselves the specs are about equal but I just couldnt get off the 2.0 Ghz processor. Its gonna bottleneck from using high settings in a year I would imagine.

I can't believe I didn't think of doing that, haha. It's good now, thanks.

Haha, you mean "Archie"...ing program practically kills those computers...

You can always get back to the desktop by clicking "explore this computer" on the top left, but archie is going to take up a certain degree of processing power and ram to run so don't judge the specs based on the demo models.

Hey guys when you check your Windows 7 Upgrade status here what does it tell you?

Mine says Order Status: New, the rest is my info and it seems like everything's okay but I haven't gotten an email from Asus saying they received/processed my recept. I mailed it about 1-2 weeks ago so it should've arrived by now.

Well, to an extent it's true. Games, for the most part, won't be bottlenecked by a P7350 vs a P8700, not with a GTX 260m running the graphics.

Some games, sure. GTA4, Supreme Commander, and so on... but not games like Crysis.

But like it's been said so many times, the real reason people buy one or the other is the design. I happen to like the flashy white cover and chiclet, backlit keyboard (which I haven't had problems gaming on, by the way).

Lethal didn't like any of it, so he stayed away.

    And we're all happy.
