My dad is crazy into warranties, so I have a 3 year accidental + 3 year parts and labor. I'm going to be OCing the **** out of this once the PLLs get figured out.

And about the double typing issue: I seemed to be having trouble with it when I first started using the keyboard, but now that I have gotten used to it I am not noticing the issue. So I think that it's just the design of the keyboard, and once you adapt to it, you won't have the double typing issue anymore.

Well, my G71 went back to BB today. They took it back without charging me the restocking fee, which was good. But no more in the whole state, which is bad I hate being laptop-less!

I was trying to find a gaming laptop that can handle some engineering 3d rendering so would the g71 be comparable to the sager 8662 it is 400$ cheaper with 6gb ddr2 ram and more hdd space.

I spend like an hour in front of both laptops at best buy noticed that the g71 has a slight color saturation and red is a little more powerful compared the the crisp image of the g51 not sure if its the led i checked both have the same configs for screen quality. Bestbuy reps could not explain it or understand what I was saying.

I am afraid to buy it b/c of the issue it may have...but the warranty seems good. is the best buy warranty good? and is there an asus manufactureer warranty on the laptop too? Anyone know the battery life of normal mode and web browsing and powersaver mode? i may need to undervolt and get an extra battery to last me the college day.

The Best Buy model comes with the Best Buy warranty, not the (super awesome) Asus reseller warranty.

With the same processors, the G71gx might be superior because of the RAM. However, the GTX 260m on the Asus is underclocked, so you'll notice some lesser performance there. However, reclocking back to the original clocks is very easy to do.

 

You can adjust the redness in the nvidia control panel.

 

Forge or somebody... can you give me a walkthrough in how to do that or a link to someone who has already reclocked the graphics card on Asus's newest laptops?
Why in the world would Asus underclock the GTX 260m, it's already runs cooler than the GTX 280m...

 

so what your saying is that since most of the problems have been fixed its economically feasable to ge tthe asus g71 over the sager8662? anyone know what the batt life would be for surfing on normal best buy says max 2 hours. and what is the benchmark for the bestbuy brand i want to compare to the sager. with the gpu stock and volted back to normal.

 

Tev's (with a little bit of Forge's) G51 optimization guide will show you what to do. Since the video cards are identical the steps to "overclocking" them is identical, too.

You can also learn how to undervolt, which is a must for power-hungry and hot Asus gaming laptops.

Its probably because they had heat issues with some model during designing. If they let the GTX 260M have normal clocks, an abnormally high number of their laptops may get critical temperatures and thus would break more easily so they just stuck a lower clock in.

 

I have been using g71 (bestbuy) for 20 days and my low framerate issue still goes on. I am using the 3rd BIOS, all the updates are done. When I play WoW, I dont know what triggers, frame rate drops to 2-3fps suddenly and doesn't go up unless you restart the pc.... I am thinking to return the laptop but it's been already 20 days.... Anyone out there still having the same issue?

 

Your problem: You upgraded to the 3rd bios (it was a retarded update anyway, bluetooth... bah). 1302 introduces the thermal bug back in-

What was wrong with the second bios update, 1201, that fixed the thermal issue/frames issue? It ythe best and ONLY update you needed in regards to bios. Did you upgrade through asus live update? If so, that might be your problem. In my opinion, I believe the Asus Live Update is crap, It sometimes doesn't fully install the bios correctly despite it saying it is updated to it. Flash the bios yourself with a usb thumb drive (flash drive) but flash to 1201, you should be fine after that. Download the 1201 bios from Asus support page, put it on a USB. Go into the bios screen of your laptop (forgot what key, F2, F4, F8... one of those 3) and choose to flash from there (EZ Flash I believe). Browse to your USB and find the bios rom and flash, you are done. It's pretty easy to flash the bios yourself, you can also look a few pages back in this thread and a few people give you a walkthrough in doing so, even Asus has a guide.

People mentioned before when the GPU hits 82C etc..actually mine happened yesterday when GPU was 87C, earlier it happened when gpu was arround 79C so I am not sure if this low frame issue is a heat related. I ll flash the bios tonight and let you guys know abt the outcome in 2-3 days (i need to play in order to see if its happen again)
ps: I had the same issue with 2nd bios as well. mine happens sometimes, not like when gpu hits the certain degree. sometimes I play for hours with no problem, sometimes it happens at the 1st minute of playing....

I get about 2.5 hours on this. If I run rightmark and undervolt I could get longer I'm sure. Not bad for a high performance laptop. If you are looking for battery life, don't expect too much out of a desktop replacement.

 

I was wondering can the G71GX run Windows 7 because I have the RTM and would like to install it also the day I bought it I ran the Live update utility and installed both bios updates and have no heat related GPU slowdowns.

I am no longer comparing this to the alienware m15x but to a lower speced sager8662 about 1450 so the bestbuy g71 would be about 1300 after warranty and tax....

 

Someone said earlier that if you are using both the laptop screen and an external monitor, the external monitor can only be at the max res of the laptop, but this is not true. Right now I am simultaneously using my 1680x1050 monitor and the Asus screen, and I have them both at their native resolutions.

 

So only a couple of days left until my check comes in and i get to pick up a new laptop. my budget is 1200 max and i have been looking at the g71 (bb model), and i'm just wondering before i go and buy this laptop is there any other gaming laptops out there for this price?

Thats because you are running an external display, what they are referring to, I think at least, is having a clone display up. I've seen some of the EeePC's have a clone display up on an external monitor, with the netbook's screen with a 1080 resolution, but you had to scroll along the netbook's screen to get to all the areas of the desktop...

It makes sense that they wouldn't be able to have the Asus's screen at one resolution, and a clone display at a higher resolution, because the desktops would conflict on what exactly was actually displaying...its weird to explain, but yeah...;P

If you have two screens up and have an extended display where both screens run independent things, then yeah, they can run two different resolutions.

 

Just been reading best buy consumer review on teh G71 apparenly untill the 2nd bios update everyone was rating it a 1 not ppl are rating better with 4, and 5's sO i take it that you guys are happy with the purchase after you tweak it a little?
if anyone can help me with these questions:
the g71 supports 12 gb ram...what can i use with 6gb ram or 12 other than making a server for wow.

I assume that that is not true anymore. The bestbuy models are fixed as well now correct?

 

I bought a G71gx-RX05 from best buy. I have applied the 1201 update and the framerate issues with the video card still persist when waking from Sleep. I have already RMA'd my laptop and the techs replaced 2 sticks of ram, however the issue still is present. If I try to play a game after waking from sleep. I have tried everything including updating my drivers to no success.

I'd like to know if people have been successful at playing games after waking from sleep and hitting 82C. I do not believe the 1201 update was ever a complete fix as I dare say alot of gamers don't put their computers into sleep mode.

It could just be that once the laptop wakes from sleep it resets the settings for when the GPU gets undervolted, so the only way around this would be to not put your laptop to sleep or restart it before playing games.

Or if you can submit a ticket with Asus and see if they can fix this problem with another BIOS update.

 

Thanks to Goodkarma. I confirmed that after waking up from sleep mode frame rate drops when gpu hits 82C. When you restart no problems.

In the FX I could clone in a different resolution. It moved the cursor fine. I rarely used clone anyways though.

Despite the laptop being more powerful than your current Gateway laptop, you try your hardest to complain about the G71GX-RX05 you don't even own.

What laptop would you suggest to us who are strapped for cash to buy and haven't decided what laptop to get?

For the money it is a very good gaming machine as long as you are ok with the resolution. I really wish mine hadn't turned out to be a lemon, since I can't find another one in the entire freaking state.

Could anyone recommend a good backpack for this laptop + room for books, the power brick, etc.?

I tried looking through the huge laptop pack thread, but it seems like the majority of the packs are discontinued and I didn't feel like finding reviews for each bag.

 

Is it just me but does ASUS provide a relatively large amount of available replacement parts for the G50/G51 in comparison to what they have for the G71 models?

Heck for a mere $8 you can buy a complete bottom panel for a G50/51 and customize it for greater cooling.

I personally have the North Face Box Shot Backpack for this laptop. I can fit the laptop, my Zalman NC-2000 cooler, power adapter, G5 mouse, giant mouse pad, headphones, external hdd, and my cd carrying case no problem.

However there is absolutely no room for books. Therefore I suggest the Targus TXL617. You will fit all that crap plus books easily. I wanted something just big enough because that Targus is a monster.

 

Dammit I did the Asus live update and got the new BIOS patch. Hope I don't run into any problems.

Did anyone run into Direct Console problems? I cannot access the "message" portion for the LED display? Anyone know how I can get the battery notification up?

 

I just ordered a Code Alpha MOLLE Laptop bag, in ACU (army combat uniform) Print. They do offer them in Black, and they have quite a bit of space. Im not sure when I will get it but i will definitely let you know if it is capable of carrying books. I know it doesnt say the size it fits, however i did look up the same product on google and another site says it holds up to 17inch. Looks huge and the front pockets are removable. Dont know if it suits your style, but its worth a look.

 

From what ive heard on the -RX05 the OLED display is not included, therefore no spiffy battery notifications, etc.

 

I also updated to the latest asus live update 13xx bios whatever they were and i ran furmark after to make sure it didnt mess up the downclocking fix that 1201 took care of. All is good!

 

Asus G71GX is the best gaming laptop ever, because has such a beautiful screen and sounds like a "morning ocean breeze" under full load-better now ?

not a bad but add 64 bit windows and your in over 1300. And the ATI 4850 just runs too hot for a laptop IMO.

Other than that, the G71 is about $250 cheaper (MSI + 64 bit), and it is actually available unlike the MSI, which is on pre-order.

Overall, the MSI would be a better deal; however, many people are buying laptops for school, so many couldn't afford to wait for the MSI GT729 to be released.

Don't take my post directed at you earlier too seriously though, I was merely wondering why all the "Hate Reviews" from ya. What's funny with your link is that currently, IT IS between the G71GX-RX05 and MSI GT729 that I'm trying to decide on which laptop to get (just haven't changed my sig yet). The 4850 is [supposedly] better than the GTX 280m (or on par) and the GT729 has many pluses over the G71GX-RX05. If the GT729 doesn't come out soon though the G71GX-RX05 will be in my possession. Although, I'll be traveling for the next week or so, I'll have plenty of time to decide which then. I'm kinda still a bit nervous with another online purchase though, my last one was from Cyberpower and I had a horrible experience with them and regret I even purchased it (and for so much), repairing the item (yeah it broke within the first day) took weeks too because they couldn't figure out what was wrong. That's kinda why I also want to get a laptop at a store this time around, that way if I do have a problem/issue I can either return it to Best Buy or go with Asus tech support (which I have heard good things about).
