The beta ended in July, but the RC is still available. Actually, the RTM is being released on the 6th, so I'm actually going to just wait for that.

Nothing is real, did you get the Nvidia GPU upgrade through Windows updater? because I was on the asus forums and some people there were complaining about loosing 1-2 fps in gameplay after getting that update. 1-2fps over the 3dmark06 cycle could add up to a lot probably.

I just remembered that I saw this post awhile ago and I thought I would find it! This is how to change the colors over the two LEDs on the front of the G71. Flashing colors are fun!

No, I was using the DoX drivers. I don't really care anymore, since I'm going to be using this computer for multimedia purposes mostly. The unstability of the DoX drivers was not fun, so I am just going to use the Nvidia drivers now. Also with the DoX drivers, the HDMI-out function was really buggy, which sucked for my uses.

Have you gotten the nvidia drivers to work with your g71gx? because last time i tried to get the latest ones from nvidias site, i went to install them and it said i wasnt using 64 bit windows or something....
someones explanation was that asus wasnt allowing anydrivers but there own to be installed, but have u gotten the nvidia ones to work?

Also on a good note, i got the fear 2 demo through steam, and the g71 nearly tore it apart (in my mind) with max res, everything on high and 2x anti alaiasing, and 4x texture filtering, it seemed to stay above 40-50 frames all the times, the only dips which probably went to 30 were in the outdoor enviroment in the mech suit with tons of smoke, explosions, and characters in a large enviroment all going at once, and i bet if AA was off it would run considerably better.

I'm just using the Nvidia driver that was in the Windows Update, haha. It is called version 8.15.11.8631. I haven't done any benchmarks tince I downloaded them, so I don't know how they perform when gaming.

    Try the drivers from laptopvideo2go.

There is a short guide for driver upgrading within my Asus G51 optimization guide (look at sig)

Well, all of their drivers can be used. They're just different versions.

Anyways, performance wise, the best driver should be Dox 185.85. If you look in my guide in my sig, there is a short excerpt in there with the link to the driver and install instructions.

    Acording to asus webpage,

I just bought mine, and came with 1201 bios already installed, no problems. I was scared to upgrade to 1302 cause i saw some remarks about the 82c temp issue back again, ill probably wait to see in 1501 if it has it or not.

What was wrong with the HDMI thing? It works perfect for me.

It won't work. Asus will have to release drivers because of how Asus customized the laptop, the Nvidia drivers are for standard only.

Not true. There's a guy on the Asus forums that has installed the latest Nvidia drivers via Windows Update. See the thread here

He's reporting a sizable FPS increase in at lease one game and has not had any problems so far.

I sent in a question to Asus tech support regarding the matter. I'm waiting for a response before installing via Windows Update or downloading from Nvidia site. FYI, the windows version is 186.31, The Nvidia current version is 186.03.

here is what i did.... uninstall vista yep that simple. then install crysis and i even cranked them all up to very high and it worked but high seemed a better trade off for performance... but i did just get the newer but older windows update version... and i installed windows 7 RC Beta by the way... i dont like xp and 7 is better then vista which takes 10 minutes to load at the login screen until the hard drive light stops... I wont login until the hdd light stops.... with windows 7 about 1 or 2 minutes.....

WOW!! Im impressed. I am happy to announce the purchase of my second computer (the first was a desktop). My new computer is an Asus G71GX-RX05 laptop. Having purchased after July whatever, (does the date matter at this point?) I am now fully eligible to recieve a free upgrade from windows Vista to Windows 7. (in Nov. Right?)

My final Setup for my new laptop will have the express gate start up and normal start up with triple boot (Ubuntu, 7, XP). XP allows you to "personalize" your desktop with themes and I have a small collection of themes I have downloaded and truly enjoy (alienware, C&C, others). Vista (as far as I know) does not allow these. I dont know if 7 will, and if it will then many users and companies will have to modify current themes to make compatible and build a variety of themes again. Ubuntu is mostly there for learning purposes. Apparently its a great thing to have when your in the I.T. field.

so count...3 and a half Operating systems(express gate kind of counts) Is that overkill. Oh by the way, I've never used Vista longer than about.....10mins. and I have to learn it for college (starts Aug 17th). lol then I get 7 after 2 months of finally getting used to Vista.

I sent the G71Gx back because it definitively had the double typing issue.
Judging from what I gather from this thread the issue does not seem to be widesperad. Do any of you have it?

I've got nothing but great things to say for this machine.... I've never had the GPU temp get pased 78 C , but then again I'm playing on a cooling pad(if you dont have one then you shouldn't be using a gaming laptop)

I dont have any of the "new" games out but it plays Mass Effect flawlessly . City of Heroes, even when there are LOTS of people in a zone I'm getting no lag.

played Jedi Academy mods last night and it was running dope... but then again that title isn't too hard on a laptop..

I'm looking forward to purchasing something that will push this game... Im not really into FPS so Crysis is out.. I wish I could get Knights of the old Republic -Sith Lords to run on Vista 64 :(.

    No typing issues at all

    Really?
How come I'm gaming on my FX almost everyday (for more than 1.5 year now) and temp. on GPU never pass 73C without any cooling pad (even after couple hours non-stop play).
Maybe some companies shouldn't be making gaming laptops if theirs costumers have to spend extra money, to get "decent" temperatures ;) .

Either you live in cold temperatures, you dont play GPU intensive games, or it has something to do with your GPU not being as strong as current cards that need more cooling.

ASUS had the same issue on the G71G and they never fixed or even acknowledged it. Other vendors have had similar problems (e.g. Vaio Z) and as far as I know they didn't solve it either.

Just better cooling solution than in Asus. I got two separate fans for CPU and GPU instead of one in G71GX
I got 78F in my room right now. Just recently finish GTA IV, now playing Cryostasis (and is extremely GPU demanding game).

Dont think it can run GTA 4 max witout some issues, as GTA 4 is badly optimized and requires big time processing power. You may be right though Im not sure. Im positive it can run it but I thought a quad core was needed for best results.

Not true... as TevashSzat, most of the games can be run at max settings, quite possibly even GTA IV.
    Reason: Resolution, Resolution, Resolution!

Both the G71GX and G51VX may have lower resolutions than your normal laptops but the lower resolution produces it's high points in spades! Lower resolutions equals better frames no matter what if you don't want to upgrade the processor. People cry to the highest mountain that both the G71GX and G51VX from Best Buy have horrible resolutions and that a high resolution is needed. These are gaming laptops though and any smart person knows that besides overclocking or buying better equipment (CPU, GPU, Ram, etc.), a lower resolution (whether 1024 x 768, 1366 x 768, or 1440 x 900) will ALWAYS produce higher frames than a higher resolution (1920 X 1200), hands down no matter what.

People just have to realize that when you are going with a laptop, you are (I know I'm going to say this wrong) accepting the fact that you are grabbing something that is less powerful (and more expensive) than a desktop. When I grab the G71GX, I'm going from a 22" monitor to a 17", there are tradeoffs you just accept. A higher resolution may be sharper but you lose frames no doubt than a lower resolution. In my opinion- I'd take maxing out my settings and getting high frames if I lowered the resolution a bit than having to lower my settings a bit and getting lower frames due to me wanting a sharper visual (Hgher resolution).

I game in 1024 x 768 currently anyway on my desktop and if I want to sharpen my visuals I'll simply use AA in the gme or force it (through Nvidia Control Panel). I mean, what was AA invented for anyway? Unless you pay oodles of money on a high powered notebook (like a Asus W90VP), and upgrades like the CPU, SSD, and Ram, I can accept maybe downgrading a settings or two or overclocking for that matter in regards to the G71GX-RX05. I plan on upgrading the parts down the road anyhow. Anyway, the G71GX-RX05 is right for me at least and many others, especially at that price!

(I thought GTA IV had patches out to optimize/speed up the game better. Plus you can overclock the CPU and GPU and lower the resolution to get even more frames out of GTA IV. Also you can kill some of the car density and other things that aren't "too impotant", GTA IV is easily playable on the G71GX-RX05 [and G51VX-RX05]. I don't care too much about it because I play GTA IV on my PS3 or [wifes] 360 anyhow :p!)

    oh, 1501 bios update:
Stick with what works instead of flashing bios every chance a new one comes out. 1201 fixed what everyone was having a problem with, no reason to update for these little changes/fixes that don't affect us...

Like others have said before, not necessarily.

I have the latest patch and my P7350 is overclocked to 2.3Ghz. I have everything at max except for the various view distance things (with slider options) that are around 3/4 or so of the maximum. Everything runs smoothly and I haven't encountered any problems.
