I am also running windows 7 rc release.... wifi seems a bit better at home.... redid windows... also anyone have issues with the number pad and the placement of the keys which is not standard

Yeah that's nice considering it's right out of the box. Using the Turbogear to OC the CPU 15% and using ntune to OC the GPU to 550/850/1300 (for gaming/3dMark06), you should get a 11200+ with actually very similar temperatures on both units.

Keep in mind though, I use a Zalman NC-2000, and with the cooler I actually didn't break 69C on the CPU running that test, and considering it was overclocked to the max setting on the application, I was pleased.

I hadn't tried to use the SPDIF port on the G71 until now because that guy had his panties in a bunch over it not working... but it does work. All you have to do is go to the control panel>sound>realtek digital output>set default.

Hi all... my 1st post here.
Got my G71 a couple of weeks ago (actually got the first one 3 weeks ago, but I had to return it because of random freezes at boot). Didn't have the time to really play with it until today. Did some overclocking with the asus utility and ntune and ran 3DMark06. Ran a couple of games (crysis, call of juarez) at stock and I was very pleased with the results.
Just my $0.02 on a very nice machine.

    Regards - ImBad

That guy was hilarious, he swore up and down that the SPIDF didn't work and we believed him (we were happy with HDMI anyway). With you confirming it works, I guess it was just his laptop ONLY after all. A simple exchange would have solved his problem...

I look at the real numbers for frames per second for gaming, not "benchmarks" which mean little WHEN gaming. Not to mention the 260M eats more power too.

Let's just say they're pretty close in regards to performance and in some areas one will outperform the other. Some games, the pipelines are more useful and in some games the memory/shader speed is more needed.

Other determining factors? Drivers, and ATI/NVidia.

When you set Digital Output as your default playback device and you play a song you can see a light from the spdif output?

I did this and I can't see a light, but I have no cable to plug in and test it so I can't be sure my G71 might not have optical out.

I realized a couple of days ago how tricky the best buy salesmen are.

My dad and I walked into the store and started talking to the salesman. We mentioned that I would need Microsoft Office and that Amazon had it for ~$25 cheaper than them. We then asked to see the manager to see if we could get a cash discount on the laptop. The salesman walked away saying that he would go fetch him, and then came back a couple of minutes later and told us that he could price match amazon for Microsoft Office. This distracted us for a good 5-10 minutes as we went to the macs (he said that they get better internet reception) and went on amazon to show him the price of Office. We walked back over to the computer and then my dad said that we were ready to buy the laptop. I on the other hand was still thinking about the cash discount and asked again about it. He then said that bb isn't really making a profit on the laptop and he already gave us a discount on Office, blah blah blah. Of course I responded saying that I could easily buy the program off Amazon w/ free shipping, but since my dad already said we should go ahead and buy it he wasn't willing to give us any other type of discount. I know I could have picked up a nice mouse or a printer at least if my dad hadn't said that...

Moral of the story: don't get distracted by worthless discounts, don't show too much interest in actually buying the product, and don't buy it until you have gotten SOMETHING for free11!

I couldn't sleep last night because I was so pissed off that I could have picked up a $50 mouse or something instead of this 3 year old pos I'm using, lol.

I wonder if I could talk down the price of the G71GX-RX05 to a Best Buy manager? Mention that I know that the laptop was $1149 earlier this month and don't have any idea in why the laptop is now $1299. I wonder if that would work? If not, I guess it's alright, maybe I can talk to them into getting me a free mouse at least...

It's more likely that it would work now than when the laptop was $1150. Now, they can't use the "omg we are like losing $8 on each of these laptops man, give us a break bro" excuse. I wouldn't mention it right away; first waste some of the employees time and "get to know him" per say. It's much easier for them to say no when someone randomly comes up and asks them for a discount than it is when the salesman and the customer start to trust each other.

Also another good idea would be to have whatever you want to pick up for free in your hands when you go to look at the laptop, whether it's a mouse, MS Office, or whatever. Picking up $100 in merchandise that you were planning on buying anyways for free is just as good for you as getting a $100 discount as well as for bestbuy, since that $100 in merchandise was only $50 or so for bestbuy.

I was just messing around with the sound settings, and it seems to me that the following gives the speakers a little more depth...

Control Panel > Sound > configure speakers > next > check "front left and right" > next > finish

It could just be my imagination, but I seriously think it makes them sound better. And the G71 speakers are surprisingly good. I was comparing them to my brother's mac earlier and they really did sound exponentially better.

Also going to preferences, enhancements > carpeted hallway, and equalizer > soft seems to help both the speakers and the SPDIF output.

I'm determined to bring this thread back to life.

So I forked out the $1300 at Best Buy for my G71. First thing I did was install Windows 7 64bit RTM on it. I haven't had many issues. They are relatively minor annoyances but wonder if anyone has shared experiences with these:

Splendid Utility runs, but when you cycle through the different settings using the keyboard, nothing happens. The different settings come up on the screen, but the brightness and such don't change at all. If you look at the different settings using the Splendid Utility, you can see the previews of what each setting looks like, but when you apply the setting, the screen doesn't change at all.

The second (and more annoying) issue is the screen fade. The laptop appears to ignore all of my power settings. No matter what I do in the Power Options Control Panel - regardless of what plan I choose, and what settings I assign for the power plan, the screen fades to black after about 3-5 minutes.

Is anyone running Windows 7, and if so, are you experiencing these same issues? Any way of resolving them? I can live with them for now, and will assume that once Windows 7 is publicly available I can get my free copy from Asus and it will fix these issues? I just want to make sure that these are software issues (Windows 7) and not hardware issues. I'd hate to wait 2 months for my official Windows 7 and Asus drivers, only to find out something was wrong with my hardware all along.

Just go to control panel > power options > change plan settings and change the turn off display options (this is for vista but win7 should be similiar). Hope this works.

Thanks for the reply. In Win7, there are three settings (Dim the Display, Turn Off the Display, and Put the Computer to Sleep) and two modes (On Battery, Plugged In).

I set all of these to "Never" and save my changes. The changes take hold (they're still there when I return to the screen), but my laptop seems to be completely ignoring the settings. 3-5 minutes of inactivity and the screen fades to black. Makes it a pain to try and watch a movie on this thing! There is also a "Plan Brightness" setting -- that appears to be the only one that the laptop listens to.

Is there a BIOS setting or something that I might be missing that is overriding the Control Panel settings? Or is it just a question of needing an updated Asus driver?

This may be a silly question...but did you look at the screen saver settings? (not sure if its the same in Win 7) with all the power options turned off the screen saver may still work if set to blank screen after 5 mins...

I'm sure you looked at this (assuming its an option in Win 7) but just checking..

I have a question..I have an older Klipsch 5.1 speaker set up that uses 3 plug ins for all the 5.1 speakers to work. I have been messing around with sound settings and cant seem to find out how to get 5.1 out of the 3 plugs on this laptop. other laptops i have had that support 5.1 sound will change the mic-in and SPDIF plug for 5.1 use..I cant find any info on this in the manual (is there a better one on-line?). I'm thinking the only way to get 5.1 is to use the SPDIF ...is this true? If so I guess I'd have to get a SPDIF to analog converter?

    thanks

I just don't see any way for you to get 5.1 out of them. Since the G71 only supports 5.1 out of the SPDIF you would have to use a toslink to coax adapter. Then you would have to somehow find a way to change the coax into something your speakers can plug into, and I cannot think of any way for that to happen. You need a stereo receiver or an amp with a toslink-in port.

I thin the BB warranty covers that.

I put a dent in the keyboard on one of my G50s, then thought, "Well, might as well rage on this thing since it won't turn on."

They sent it to Asus, and Asus told them to give me a new laptop. THat's how I got my G51.

On top of already going to college for free.

OR the time I didn't want to have to wait for the two week turn-around time from Best Buy to get my first G51 back and told them I was going to London. I got a brand new G51 AND a hard drive swap the very next day, just before my "plane" came in.

You mention you got the spdif to work in a previous post ?
did you get 5.1 out of it ? not just stereo ( i cant even get stereo out of mine)
and this red light you speak of where is it? the only red light is on an optical output not a coax unless the light is coming from next to the port not out of it regardless no red light on mine
the g71 is a 3.5mm to coax not an optical so if you have a g71 with optical then you must have a differnt ver or a non best buy model are you using a bios update that may have fixed the problem????

as far as some one else commented about a simple return its hard to return somthing when its out of stock for more time then the return policy

I have the regular SPDIF port. SPDIF ports use a mini-toslink cable instead of the normal toslink cable. Mini-toslink cables look like a 3.5mm cables except that the end of the connector is cut-off and the plastic part where the light is transferred through is exposed.

    http://images.monoprice.com/productlargeimages/15573.jpg

^the connector that plugs into the SPDIF port is on the left, the regular toslink connector is on the right

SPDIF ports are the same thing as optical ports except they use the mini-toslink connector. They don't use a 3.5mm to coax cable since they output light signals (the red light is the signal) and not electrical current like 3.5mm and coax ports. A 3.5mm or coax cable will not work with this port since gold/silver/copper obviously doesn't transfer light too well...

If you want a mini-toslink to toslink cable here are a few different sizes of the cable I have (monoprice sells great cables for like 1/10 of any other place)

    3ft- http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10229&cs_id=1022902&p_id=1556&seq=1&format=2
    6ft- http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10229&cs_id=1022902&p_id=1557&seq=1&format=2
    12ft- http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10229&cs_id=1022902&p_id=1558&seq=1&format=2

Edit: errr I was just reading up on coax cables and apparently they are used by SPDIF ports... I'm confused. But this works for me so whatever. And yes I am getting true 5.1 surround sound. And disregard the stuff I said about all digital connections being optical. I'm retarded.

SPDIF ports support both optical cables and coax cables. I guess the SPDIF port on the G71 does not support coax cables for some reason but it does support optical cables...

Okay, so SPDIF supports both coax and optical but the SPDIF port on the G71 doesn't seem to support coax.

On an unrelated note: what is the highest GPU clock G71 owners have gotten? I can't seem to sustain some of the clocks that the G51 guys are using and I'm guessing this has to do with the G71 needing a higher voltage to get to those clocks because it is more power hungry than the G51.. maybe?

For instance I get the "display driver nvlddmkm was lost and blah, blah" with 600/1500/900 clocks even though my GPU temp is only at about 82ºC.

very interesting i wonder if mine is now damaged by pluging in a coax 3.5mm adapter and not an optical i have not yet seen a red light (did you say it only turned on when you pluggged in or when the spdif was set to default usally with optical outs the light is on inside the device even ifts not plugged in) this is the first toslink adapter enabled device i have seen in the last ten years of using spdif and the greatest irony is when i asked asus tech support they told me to use a 3.5mm to coax adapter (you do also have the best buy ver of the g71 correct)
anyway i will try a toslink i think i may have one around here somewhere i get back to you and tell you if it works

allright now im getting somewhere used an optical toslink adapter on the end of my optical cable going into the g71 and now i get sound but only stereo (im using media center) so what software where you using to get surround and what codecs or utilitys do you have installed (dude you have helped greatly by suggesting the toslink i would have never know being i took the computer manufactures word for it that it was a coax so now if i can get this to work with surround sound than im a stoked g71 owner... btw you are the only person who actually helped me here instead of just bashing me.... thank you very much for that ....

Yes I have the G71GX-RX05, and if I have the mini end plugged into the computer and have audio playing, the red light can be seen on the toslink end.

    (from G71 camera, lul)

The light stays on a little bit after the audio stops and then turns off until I play some more audio. All I did was go into the sound settings and set it as my default device as seen here-

I also went into the properties>advanced>Dolby Live (5.1) and make sure the supported formats are Dolby Digital, 44.1KHz and 48.0KHz.

I don't know what else to say.

This is pretty much the best price for the performance 17" gaming laptop at the moment isn't it even with the bump to 1300? I was looking at the Sony FW with a 4650 or the similar HP ones but they are right around $900-1k for a 16" and 2 ghz processor and it seems hard to pass up another 1" of display size, .5 ghz, and an arguably better gpu for a bit more.

To be honest, unless you really want a 17" display I would go with the G51Vx-X1A from newegg. It will be more than a hundred dollars cheaper with no tax + bing cashback. It has all the same specs as the G71 but with bluetooth, 1080p screen, raid compatibility, and a nice warranty. The only thing it doesn't have is 2 more GB of ram. Newegg doesn't have it in stock right now though, but it should be back in a week or so...

If you do decide to get the G71, don't leave bestbuy without getting a nice discount on the laptop or getting a free mouse or something. You might be able to get the laptop for $1200 or get ~$100 of free merch!11

Your GPU simply might not be able to overclock as much as others without resorting to increasing the voltage.

GPU manufacturing still contains tiny imperfections that may either aid or hinder the ability of the chip to run at faster clocks.
