Has anyone returned theirs to Best Buy as of yet? Any remarks from employees? Did they believe the reasoning? Just curious.
-
Mine went back the next day and i left a game on there to show the guy what was going on at the Geeksquad counter . He was a gamer and actually a very nice guy
.
-
It really depends on who you are returning it to. If you are really worried try printing out some pages here and ask him to go to the best buy website and the Asus website to see all the complains. However, if that is not enough install a game into your computer and run it up with Fraps and HWmonitor (or maybe not) and let the game run and block your vent. Show them that you are going to make your laptop go up to 82c and you will see that the frame rate will drop from 40ish to 2 once it hits 82c.

Ive not had to return something to best buy in a long time. I once returned an opened and installed video card to circuit city and they took it back no questions asked. Never told them i overclocked and benched the hell out of it.
Dont be afraid to try and return it. If your trying to exchange it, thats usually actually easier then a return. Depending on the product it will be ASUS's problem as best buy will just charge them for expenses inccured and ship it back to ASUS. SO best buy isnt always worried about it like you might think. -
Talking with best buy people they have no idea of the problem they are still trying to sell the G71, when i showed them the issues they were like "what kind of gaming computer doesn't play games?", I am so tempted to buy it and just wait out the fix tho I really should not do that.

The support threads are not monitored by Asus tech support, unless we increase the hits. Please post in the threads and if at all possible, call
1-888-678-3688 or 510-739-3777 ext. 5110
so they will get working on it. you can e-mail them to. just keep it coming. -
An account of the g71gx-rx05?
-
Man, what a shame. I was planning on buying one of these and throwing my t9900 in it. Hopefully they work it all out.
-
Is the card dropping down a level at that certain temp? Someone should try flashing higher voltages on the 3D and 2D levels, to see if that alleviates the issue.
-
has anyone tried downloading the latest ATK drivers from the web-site? I downloaded them but for some reason every time it just says install failed.
-
Does the problem exist if you use a notebook cooler?
-
Hey by the way, is there a seperate heat sink on both the CPU and GPU or do they run together on this thing. I'd heard something about this on Asus models.
-
Here is a pic of the Cooling setup Infiniteone. Cant say im a big fan(no pun) of the single fan solution. The original G70 had 2 fans(from what i have seen) , im not sure why the opted to go single.

Called ASUS support line, hopefully we'll get a fix soon.
-
I can tolerate waiting
-
I really want to buy one of these, and if it's been fully diagnosed as just a bios/driver kind of thing, there's no reason to hold off, but if it still might be hardware, I wouldn't get it, so this kind of detail would be really useful to know. Thanks. -
The tech support guy told me that he was completely unaware of the issue, and that normally in this kind of a situation with mass consumers having the same problem from a computer defect he would of already been told by the people above him, and he would know how to fix it. So, he told me he would pass it on to his supervisor and they would send the issue overseas so they could try to resolve it, however they need more support behind the issue or will never get solved. The more people that complain, the better chances it will get solved and get solved faster. SO CALL!
1-888-678-3688 or 510-739-3777 ext. 5110
LIVECHAT!

POST ON THE THREAD!
(they keep track of thread hits so they will look at it if there are mass hits on the thread)
They might try to make you send it in to RMA but tell them every unit has the same problem. WE NEED TO GET THROUGH TO THEM THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS! -
By the way if your going to e-mail or livechat and you need to know how to locate your serial number CLICK HERE.
Your Model #, if you bought the G71 from best buy, is G71GX-RX05 -
Seriously you guys, seven reviews. We all have to MASS DO SOMETHING! Why not best buy customer review. DO IT!!! It's the only way to get the message across. Once it is across, I don't think that it will take Asus long to solve such a serious issue.
-
Sent in a review, need to get all the posters here to do it and BB might notice that their flagship laptops are getting raged by buyers O_O
-
Has anyone had this problem with the G71GX-RBBD09 or just the G71GX-RX05?
Has the RBBD09 even shipped? Hard to tell from the BB website. -
someone speaks Spanish?
-
Ok, just got off the phone with a Asus technical support guy and...
I was like "Hey I'm having some problem with the G71GX-RX05, the graphic card will stop working once the temp reaches 82c."
And the guy said "Oh, well we actually already heard about it and their are people working on it right now."
So I ask how long will it take, and he says he is not sure (obviously...).
Well the good news is that Asus pretty much got the idea and they are actually working on it because this guy pretty much seemed to knew about the problem.
By the way Samdari I'm sure the G71GX-RBBD09 will have the same problem. They are pretty much exactly the same laptop. (expect the CPU) -
can anyone tell me how loud the fan noise is when its running hot..
-
-
Hey all, I purchased one just a couple of days ago, but it was in transit to the store. I pick it up after work today, I will definately be testing it out with Crysis.
Thanks for cracking it open and providing a pic - 1-fan? Really ASUS? COuldn'd squeeze another in there like some of your other models?
Yeah I planned on getting a good laptop cooler as well, as it seems like that would at least fix the issue while ASUS works it out, which I assume they will.
I've called them as well yesterday, to check in on this, the Support guy said he had heard of this, and knows that they are "checking into it." So.. I suppose it's just so new of an issue it hasn't gotten around to all the support guys jsut yet.
Will contribute more when I mess with my model this evening. -
SWEET NICE JOB GUYS! KEEP IT GOING THOUGH>>>
by the way the fan is kinda noisy when its running hot but its nothing unbearable, not really to the point of annoying. if you playing a game or something the altec lansing home theater system completely overrides it. -
Like many others have asked but I haven't seen an answer- Has anyone tried a good laptop cooler w/ fans underneath just to see if it will hold out until there is a patch? Also noting from the pics of the gpu- I cant believe Asus didn't give it its own fan!
I Really want this laptop and its at the closest best buy to me- otherwise id have to run 90 mins out and get the G51 w/ the 260m card in it >< I been watching this thread for a while now hoping for a fix because I was hoping to buy this laptop! -
i doubt you will keep it down to 80c with a fan. maybe if it was a few degrees you had to cool it down but were talking like 20c. don't think its going to happen - at least safely.
-
I recently bought the BB G71 as well. I've been having the same issues as well, only at 83-84C. I just got of the phone with ASUS and the rep stated the issue was known and had been "elevated to our R&D department." No estimate about timing for a fix though.
-
Yeah mine usually kicked in around 83 degrees.

http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner
I have a friend who works for Evga and he says he even knows about that throttling problem w/ some of the 200 series cards- he recommended Riva Tuner to me. Might work if the program is compatible w/ the card and in my opinion i think its worth a shot, maybe turn down the core clock a ways as a temporary fix. -
without playing, how many ° C reached?
-
Well you can toy around with different settings to see if you can keep the temps under control, but depending on the game it will probably creep up to that temp eventually unless your place is ice cold or you have a decent cooler or both for that matter. The card idles at around 60c which doesnt leave alot of room for the temps to not eventually creep up there.
-
think the GXA1 will have the same problems?
-
I would say until a new bios is reported to be out then all these machines will have the same issue.
-
so by the time that the A1 comes out, the problem should be solved. Gotcha.
-
Like you said, it'll 99% be fixed, because that's the only thing I could think of it being delayed for. -
-
for all those hoping that a bios update will solve the issue, it wont. the only way to lower heat is to lower power consumption or increase the fan speed. since the fan can only go so high, the only other change they could make is underclocking it more.
-
-
ah, my mistake. i thought it had the same heat issues as (some?) of the g51's. i thought i remember someone saying to disable "gpu monitoring" (or something) in bios for now.
-
Here is a program i found by doing a little digging, it is supposed to allow you to adjust the throttling temps of the cpu/gpu!
http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/tthrottle_manual.html
Someone please test it! Here is the download page:
http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/download.html
It appears to be for doing CUDA stuff but it might work since it is supposed to allow you to adjust the GPU throttle temp. -
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
@Dane and @ Granite, one of the owners observed that the clock rate was not changing and a dumped bios observed that it is set to 105C in the bios like every other nvidia card.
Unless someone has actually observed different, the card isnt actually downclocking. It just drops frame rates like it is. -
-
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
I can go back and look im pretty sure its in this thread i asked someone if they had monitered clock rates and if anyone would dump the bios. One user said they dumped and checked the throttle temp before returning theirs and a user monitored no drop in clock speed during the occurance. -
Well, after finally getting all my games and software installed, I am now going through the refresh process to take it back to Best Buy. I was really hoping to keep the computer, even with the video card issue, but I guess when I am paying $1200 with tax, I am a little old school when I expect it to work as advertised out of the box.
So..... Maybe the G51?
Yes, I know the processor is slower and the HD and memory are a little less, but it still has the fantastic 260M graphics card, right?
Is the CPU too much of a bottleneck?
OK, I will read the G51 area. -
Yeah the current conclusion is the power issue. Everyone who actually tested out the comp pretty much stated that the clock speed stays the same when the GPU "throttles." So, the GPU actually isn't downclocking.
2.0ghz is really slow... I personally feel like it's going to bottleneck the performance of the laptop. -
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
Has the same underclocked GTX 260M, ::COUGH:: 250M ::COUGH:: instead of actually failing to work it just runs a bit hot for most owners, nothing us G50 owners did not expect, all the G51 owners are shocked like it was gonna run cold.
The P7350 to be honest sucks, but it is okay for quite a few games. I would really overclock it to 2.2 for crysis. Far Cry 2 is more enjoyable with a much better cpu but is playable if u turn the settings down. You can forget about GTA4, Saints Row 2, and World in Conflict... those three games you really need a quad for but are playable with a T9900 overclocked to all hell. -
After all this trouble I think I might end up just buying this laptop- Great specs for the price:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220557 The G50s seems to be pretty reliable.
Unless within the next couple of day this damn issue w/ the G71 we all want gets fixed
