Yeah, that's a good point...I think I'll go see the ASUS in person, to get a feel for the screen. I've been using 1440x900 on a 19" LCD for 2 years now, and it's fine for a 19", so it should be fine methinks.

Ah thanks, sorry I missed it.
Darn, thats a shame that the G71 also has a downlocked GTX 260m like the G51.
I had hoped since the G71 has a larger footprint they could afford the TDP of a standard clocked GTX 260M

Take for example the Gateway FX Laptops, which has the same resolution, are so popular that they sell out within a few days (or the same day they come out). Resolution doesn't play too much of a factor when you can get a highly-speced laptop at a great price. The specs say all but the price speaks even louder: $1149 vs $1300+
Plus you can try the Asus out at Best Buy while the MSI you'll be taking a gamble...
I honestly would grab the Asus (once they fix the problem)...

(Sorry for mentioning the Gateway FX's so much in this thread, I'm at odds between their new line and this Asus Laptop)

My preference would be for an Asus as well, but with a higher screen resolution and a two year parts and labor, one year accidental breakage warranty in exchange for a somewhat higher price. Just have to sit back and see how everything plays out and hope that Asus can right their wrongs... If not, I'll be buying a different product.

The Graphics card is the same on the G71 and G51, correct? How much is the slower CPU in the G51 noticable?

I have the G71 plugged in to an Acer 23" monitor running very smoothly at 1440x900. Can I expect roughly the same quality out of the G51 hooked up to that monitor?

    Thanks much!

    Same here ;)!
I would advise you too juneboco to wait. Anything running on the laptop doesn't matter much, it shuts down within 2 hours or so...
Best to wait and see in the next few days and weeks to see what Asus has done about the problem...

    Define problems.
If you mean frame rate, then it will have no problem playing all current games with at least medium settings.
If you mean the gpu throttle-like problem then that is harder to say. If your room is cold enough you could probably play CS Source no problem but GTA 4 and Crysis are going to throttle at some point.

I haven't found many gaming laptops with Nvidia 260(or better) and 1200x800 (on 15inch) or 1440x900 (17) and I prefer those lower resolutions for work.

Lower resolutions is a benefit to me.

Only problem is... It's only 2.0GHZ dual core right? Plus I'm choosing my first Laptop too, so replacing the CPU is most likely A)Going to cost a bit extra money and B) Void my Warranty. I've never replaced a CPU either, hopefully it's similar to Desktops...
I have 2 months to wait though, so maybe by then Asus has fixed this 2 hour playtime issue by then...

@anglagard: I agree, lower resolutions in my book mean more frames, I'll probably just up the AA in the game anyway (or force AA through the Nvidia Control Panel) to kill the jaggies/shimmering. I do that now on my Desktop :D!

Asus actually has a forum with 2 threads reporting the problem... we just have to wait and hope an Asus employee notices those threads though...

After I ran some games and the street fighter 4 benchmark on my g51 I'm glad I have it it performed almost the exact same in the games I want to play as the g71 and u can always upgrade the processor later. I'd say if u don't want to wait you will not be disappointed with the g51. I think for the price the 71 is a better deal judging from the specs but as far as perfomance wise anyone not wanting to wait will be very happy with the g51. I'd recommend 2 year warranty because it does run hot but they knocked 100 dollars off the price since I bought the warranty so ask them about that

Btw they are both 6-cell. You get 8-cell with the 1,400 bucks quad core.

GTA IV is a recent game and is a hard game to run on a lot of desktops. I'd personally say it won't run well b/c of the CPU. And the G51 will do worse.

    Didn't I mention this earlier >.>
J/K, now we just need alot of users with the problem on this thread to flood those threads and Tech support. Then they'll realize it's a problem.

Honestly, I really like the specs on the G71, the 2 hour shutdown problem is the only thing holding me back from turning a blind eye to Gateway's "new" FX line...
I can wait 2 months before I decide but other have a shorter waiting period than me, so Asus needs to fix this problem fast if they want to see sales...

There is also an older Bios 1001, has anyone tried it?
    http://support.asus.com.tw/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=G71GX

Just so people know before they downgrade.
    From Asus site
"BIOS 1102 Fix bug that user toggle “F9” key for recovery failed on dual HDD system"

BB G71 only has one HDD so this is not a problem...

You are right, it says 8 cell on the spec page but look at the Overview section it says 6-cell lithium-ion battery.

I think its probably 6 cell because its the cheaper model.

Hmmmmm... If Asus can't get their hands on a laptop without us sending one in, we should assume the problem will not be solved.

I believe that they do not need to wait for us to send in a laptop, but can get one on there own. They do make them after all.

Meh I thought it was a 6 cell. I bought it, and returned it that's my source. However, I might be mistaking b/c I didn't pay to much attention to the battery when I bought it due to it's freaking problem.

I was the one who discovered it first... :(

Once the 82 degrees issue is worked out of these I'd like to buy one. The thing is, I want to throw a WUXGA LED screen in one. I've been looking at these because they're relatively cheap.

    http://www.screencountry.com/index.php?section=products&part_number=LP171WU4(TL)(A1)

    LP171WU4(TL)(A1)

It's actually cheaper on ebay but the link was incredibly long.

Anyways, does anyone have experience with going from CCFL to LED? Do you think this laptop will be able to accept the change?

the G71 is better for the price, they are both not very mobile. so i would suggest the G71 minus the bios issue. just hold on. and CALL! they need more complaints before they get people working on it!

You know what sucks, I'm most likely going to HAVE to get the G51v because there are no Best Buys around me or my new place that are selling the G71v. So that means I'm going to have to spend more money to get a better CPU and break my warranty as well. Crossing my fingers that I don't run into any problems and only need to do exchanges with Best Buy if I do.
Moreso, Hopefully by the time I get done moving and settle back down (should be about 2 months), the G71 will be available at the Best Buy around me AND be fixed.
