Well that is a real possibility. My next system will probably come around March/April of next year once Sandy bridge is released and has all the bugs ironed out.

Make sure you load up on new ink cartridges for that printer! ;)

Yeah, considering that my desktop 4870 gets a 7.5 in both graphics categories, yet the mobility 5870 scores higher in vantage and gets a 7.2.

I wish people would quit asking about the WEI scores. REALLY annoying.

"The M17x CPU heat sink is heat limited"

too bad AW couldn't have a batch of Upgraded Heatsinks with better heatpipes made up for the i7 920 cpu owners. even if it was more$ i would pay xtra for it..

"Their next revision of the system is going to be a complete (plastic) redesign" NOO that was why AW was so well built.
Well I sure to have a R2 before this happends I want 5870s then it will be a keeper :D

Forgive me with the hijack. I know G73 thread, Thinking i'm AW thread being alot of M17 talk lol

I already did this. With the new BC2 patch and 10.3 drivers I get 52fps avg in Fraps on a 2 minute timedemo.

Everything maxed 1920x1080 with AA and AX off.

evensen007, the averages are below the yellow "23" upper left corner. Played for over 1/2 hour everything high clock set at 799/1100. Could you PM on how to disable AA and how to max out so I can try for that 50+ mark? Sorry for the newb questions, but you have the knowledge with these new 10.3 drivers.. thanks..

Right-click on your desktop and go to the catalyst control center and then go to 3D. You can disable AA and AF in there and I would set AI to advanced if it doesn't cause issues. Most people leave these on application-specific which means you set the AA and AF filtering in the game vs forcing it through the desktop. I would also disable v-sync.

877/1200? Holy Smokes Old Man! That Vantage score of 9554 just put you only 250 points away from Mandrake's i7 920 score.

You don't game with those clocks, do you? Please say NO!

That right there is a nice score and exactly why I think my GPU is weaker than others. I OC to 874x1200 and only get P9100 when I should have been getting that.

You have a winner there colcamper, be good to it.

:D ... the funny thing is, I can't use the Turbo Mode button at all, no matter what I'm doing, no matter what the clock is set at without immediately freezing up the computer and having to go into bios to restart. BTW.. I unplugged the net, turned off Anti-Virus - Firewall, and I did try to game with this on BC2, but no joy... got about 1 minute into the game before I got the gray screen..

I feel for your other issues and I hope you work them out without giving up that baby. As far as Asus TT goes, screw it, unless us 720 guys can OC our i7 turbos, it is crap imo.

Do everything you can to solve your issue and hopefully your issue isn't created by that awesome GPU you got in there. For God's sake, don't game with that clock.

Are you even using 10.3's yet?

With the mass of noobs out there, it's always a good idea. ;)

Now that's out of the way I'm going to hold a first to 10K contest but it will have a time limit and 920 owners will be disqualified from it. I'll probably wait for sleey0 and Moo to get their systems back.

I have a cheap cooling pad with only 1 working fan underneath it right now.. put it back to 700/1000 right after the test... I've been gaming on BC2 at 800/1100 without issue and around 65c with the 1 small fan going..

Hey, guys, I've got a question about GPU overclocking. How can I assure the stability and safety after overclocking. I tried several times by using AMD GPU CLOCK Tool. The first several attempts didn't really work out. my system went crash when I was running 3DMARK Vantage. My last attempt seemed to work, I change my engine clock to 800, and memory clock to 1100. I successfully finished running the 3DMARK stuff, and some games as well. Everything seemed to be good. However, my system crashed again after 5 or 6 hours normal use. So, I had to reboot it and set the figures back to original. Any ideas about how to assure the stability of overclocking? Thanks a lot..

I think Evensen007 likes to game at 800/1100, but I think he uses additional cooling.

If you've been reading this thread, and at least the last 2 pages, you'll notice that not all systems perform the same.....even with the exact same components. Your system may not like 850/1100. It may crash at 801/1150. Then again, it may run vantage stable at 877/1200. But just running the same clocks as the next guy, you'll get different scores.

the main thing is to give that laptop as much cool air intake as possible. You didn't even say if you use a cooler or not. Also, if you do use a cooler, is it pushing air INTO the lappy or pulling air OUT? You want your cooler to push the air INTO this Lappy for best results and to not hurt your internal fans.

EDIT: Dude, I wouldn't bench the hell out of this machine and then game for 5 hours at those clocks, even with a cooler.

sorry about my ignorance.. yea, actually I didn't use a cooler for my laptop. I guess that's why the system went crash under the overclocking condition. Is there any good brand to recommend? thank a lot....

Yes. OC takes life off your components like smoking cigs for us. There are only 2 reasons to OC:

    1) Establish your E-peen :D , but once this is done, you don't keep doing it for fun, only if there is a substantial update to software or hardware.

    2) Need to OC for a game to play smooth, but NOT those clocks.

Don't get all paranoid about it though.

Rebooting it should have set the clocks back to normal, are you saying after you rebooted, the AMD GPU was still reporting 800x1100 clocks?

Don't run your GPU OC for gaming unless you need too is very, very, very, did I say very, sound advice. Mandrake, maybe you could put something like that under your disclaimer.

If your game is playing smooth @ 700x1000, then there is no need to put the extra heat on the component.

Since you had a crash that you are attributing to the OC, then your 800x1100 is not stable for your system. There is no other way to establish stabilty other than torturing it at incremental clocks for varying periods of time.

Not necessarily, but it will help for sure. What you need to do for us to evaluate your situation is give us temps (GPU's and ambient) for your runs. I use one of the most expensive, Zalman NC2000 and it is positioned and cools very well.

Setting AA and AX in game to 1x IS off. That's how I get 52 fps. I turned AX on 8x (full) and I am still getting upper 40's. This is with my standard O/C of 800/1100.

    What. The. *removed by moderator*

I can't even crack 9000, no matter what I do for my overclock. I feel gypped! Well, I guess the trade off is that my system is stable and my games are playing at high fps. You must have some type of golden sample or something. That is ridiculous.

    Prototype:

I though it would be higher, but game plays nice and smooth, no slowdowns.

    Again stock drivers, no overclocking.

Would have been higher with vsync off probably I just now noticed I had it on.

Yeah but to me personally it does not count if there were artifacts (aka what me meant when he said the tests were glitchy)

Not sure if other benchmarkers follow the same rule but I do.

What I meant by glitchy is that I was having problems with the computer freezing up and only restarting if I went into the bios and reset the bios to default. What was happening, when I would hit the turbo button, it remained in turbo mode in the bios so it would freeze up when I used ATI clock tool. Once I figured it out.. it's been smooth sailing since. That's why I ran 3dMark again today. I had a stable computer to work with.. I should have rephrased my original post.. :)

    very true!!

    edit:

    looks like problem solved

i figure the 5870s can hit a max clock of 925 core with the voltage given of 1.15 or pretty damn close to it....but of course...this will take time to build up to im sure..

Ahh ok well then good enough for me.

I have not overclocked yet. I used turbo mode for my wprime benchmarks and when I saw the score go down.... I have not used it since.

I have like 10 more games to bench @ stock then I can update drivers and start overclocking.

I'll probably stick with a modest 100mhz increase.

I put 10.3 on my desktop today and OMG its an even bigger deal than it was for the G73, finally bezel compensation for eyefinity and a lot of other eyefinity fixes.

Cant wait to hook up my wheel and play some Dirt 2 with bezel compensation on and see if the 10% increase lets me handle Ultra settings. (its hard for a single 5870 to handle ultra @ 5760x1200 res, now with bezel compensation my resolution is 6004x1200 so it will be even harder)

    modest 100 mhz huh.....thinking....... YEAH RIGHT!. :D :D
once you get a taste of that speed...you'll do just like the rest of us..."well...just another 10mhz...maybe another 10 ....and so on"...just like the quad core..right up to 2.7 ghz from 2.0 ghz

so go on ahead and finish up so we can see what cha got. :)

    edit:
i put 10.3 on the 5970 and got that stupid ulps nonsense crashing my card...so i had to drop them.

Is it safe to OC 5870 to 800/1000 without extra cooling?
