I don't know yet. I definitely do not want a nVidia GPU. I hated the 280m compared to the 4870/5870.

I used the same one for the GPU.

You cannot use a desktop i7 in a notebook that doesn't support it. The socket and architecture is different. It won't physically fit.

As long as it's not grease or that diamond compound that's very difficult to remove.

Why are you getting rid of the g73 bro?

I cant find anywhere where soviet said he was able to increase bclk on the 890cu

Nothing is 100% yet. With dual 5870s around the corner I more than likely buy one of those.

I'll look for the thread about bios OC'ing the 870.

Also BabyHemi has the system with the 920. Maybe he'll pop in again.

maybe im hoping for too much... im hoping clevo will have some new things out for ces!? i like this asus alot, but i also like the d900f... if the d900f actually had illuminated keyboard and OC ability I would have already bought it and not looked back... the fact that not even software OC on that laptop is beyond me... I do alot of design reviews in low light, and a usb light is distracting and a pita...

I assume you mean cebit (ces passed already) but if the system is considered portable (M17x/M980NU/x8100 need not apply) then the back-lit keyboard is important to me also.

i feel you on changing lappies every so often... i was burning through msi's looking for the best overclocker combo.... finally found a msi that OC'd to 3.28ghz with the t3100 celery... i am really looking for a mobile workstation and would not really like to pay over 3k... i was looking at some pimped out precisions but just too expensive... I also do heavy video encoding so im trying to find the best combo for that... i do absolutely no gaming so not worried about gaming performance whatsoever... but that 920xm looks like it beats out the 920 desktop cpu in the d900f...

yes cebit my bad... not up to speed on such things

I still have that 4 year old notebook I want to replace. I always have that notebook when changing around gaming systems so I'm not left PC-less. I haven't found anything worthy yet.

No gaming but want a workstation.

The W701 is the one for you from Lenovo. Has that same Thinkpad look with 3 HDDs, one SSD and 2 HDD if you want, and a Intel i7 920 Extreme.

The Nvidia Quadro with the CUDA tech should help you with x264 encoding.

Doesn't that sound about perfect for you?

Downside it's very close to the $3,000 mark, around $2,200-2,500 I believe.

well sounds nice... but they are not even out... the base price is supposed to be around 2200.00 add another 1200.00 for the 920xm puts is past the budget mark by quite a bit let alone any other upgrades like the ssd, etc... im still thinking the d900f may have "most" of what i need so i may just go this route... i can run 3x 500gb 7200rpm drives in raid 0 to get the speed similar to an ssd for cheaper than the cost of a decent 128gb ssd (especially if i use a small boot partition via intel matrix) I can always mod a small led into the top of the screen to shine down and illuminate onto the keyboard, maybe just power it off a usb internally... hopefully i can figure out a way to mod the bios or get a software OC to push the i7 desktop cpu a bit...

Mandrake, this is cool to see, I did a 2 part video using Cinebench 11.5m and the 720QM gets a 2.88. My desktop i7 920 at 3.6GHz gets a 6.09. It's good to see those numbers from your 920XM. The 3.73 is a good jump on the 2.88 and makes the upgrade worth while when I can get the right price.

Where you watching what kind of heat your cpu went to on the 3.73 run and the 5.40 run? You're able to OC to just an extra multiplier or two and not just a full load 2GHz or 3.2GHz choice, right? Thanks.

Anyone who renders video or images, or does encoding with the G73 might be interested in my Cinebench 11.5 two part video in the Owners Lounge pg 195. It's almost 20 minutes of video, but if you only want to spend 5 minutes, watch the first 5 of part 2.

In the Owners Lounge, I also put up a GPU OC 800x1100 Dirt 2 race and replay with parts of a similar stock clock 700x1000 race overlaid in the upper right for FRAPS comparison.

Mr Drake has been sick all week. :(

oink oink. My fever comes and goes and spiked to 102 on Tuesday and Wednesday and I'm constantly dizzy. Going to see the doc tomorrow. My son on the other hand has been potty trained for a few months and learned a valuable lesson today about putting the lid all the way up and not just holding it while he goes....something he'll never do again.

Enough about poor little ole me. Bought myself a portable AC unit today...John will be proud. I'm getting a whole new setup desk, chair AC unit....no more sitting out in the cold.

We got snow down here in Central Texas two days ago. That has happened about four times in my life. Now half the people at work are sick like Mandrake.

Anyway, I did a fraps benchmark playing Crysis on my replacement X1 tonight. Running 1920X1080 with no AA or VSync. I use the -dx9 switch with all settings set to "high". The average FPS is 31 and change. I did not use the "Turbo" mode. My GPU temp was 82C for a max.

I used HWiNFO32 because Evensen recommended it. However, now it won't read GPU temps anymore. It's reading all the cores on the i7, but not the GPU... weird.

doesn't need to be like a freezer..it only needs to be cold enough to get to the cpu's next lower state. and just getting to zero isn't going to cut it...you need to be like -40 which aint gonna happen on a laptop without a pot/ln2/he/phase/ss.. :(
so between 20 to even -5 will produce the same results. and since it's not direct cold on the cpu...it will heat up faster while the rest of the laptop starts frosting over or condensing. and condensation inside the laptop on the motherboard is all bad! because it's not purified water, but rust and corrosion type water. you have to seriously be watching that baby...no running in the house and talking on the phone...lmao!
cool. ready to check those out when you post.

I just never got really into it like you guys.

I'll run a base benchmark. Then tweak my system and run again. I'll do it a few times till it's stable and good.

After that, I just don't get the need to squeeze every last point out of it.

Not saying that you guys can't have your fun, but I guess I just like to play games with my spare time more than bench.

that's just it.." there is no laptop section"
    there is only hardware.
but with your help, we can get a laptop section. and since they are established and well respected..makes perfect sense to do it there.
