I wish retailers or even asus would provide a step up program for the first 90 days like eVGA does with it's video cards. I would prefer to have the nVidia model as I am an nVidia fanboy for the most part. I can still return my best buy model i have 5 more days to decide however i am not sure when asus will release the best buy model of the g73jw anyone care to speculate?

My guess is <2months from when this one is released. As that would fall right around Christmas time, one can hope it will be in time for the holiday shopping. If not, expect it in the first two weeks of January. -
When can we buy the Asus with 460m ?
& how would you compare it to the 460m to 5870 card it has now
better or worse ?
Please -

Geez, just noticed the notebook in your sig. WOW, are you in for some pleasant surprises when you get a new one. Would love to be there at your unbox'in party, LOL! (.... bet you'll be the kid in the candy store!)
Hi ibraveheart, this has been discussed somewhat already within ths thread, but to summarize...... the 460m and 5870 should be very close performance wise, with the 5870 leading a few frames (fps) in DX9, and DX10 gaming. The opposite should prove true with the 460m in DX11 gaming.
EDIT: (WOW! I see a sentence of my original reply here, got SANITIZED! But I would like to re-add my removed 'smiley-face' emoticon.) In some cases, the Mods are vigilant folks!

You'd get a kick out of the current manner in which I compute, right now. Let's just say I've made prodigious use of old computer diskettes banded together, CD-R spindles and a 5 doller 4" desk fan purchased at the local CVS. On a positive note, the higher positioning is more comfortable for the eye. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
LOL! I SEE!
Hey, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a little ingenuity, or getting the most out of what you have!
Are ya thinking about a new G73?

Since it came out. I have a rather large BB credit I need to use, so I'm waiting on JW to appear there, or buy the JH, now. Decisions, decisions. -

Which ever you choose, I hope you enjoy it! Happy Unbox'in!

ooh looks like the g73jw was on sale in singapore from 6th sept... still can't find reviews or user comments on the net though
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Since reseller's now have them in the U.S., I am certain user comments & reviews will follow shortly. I am waiting on a nice video review........
-
yup same here. and also waiting for the good news (hopefully) that its not a crash engine like the jh
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Yep, me too! I don't think it will be a 'crash engine', but I am anxious to see 460m performance and temps. Surely one of the reseller's will get a video up soon..... I'm occasionally refreshing a G73JW YouTube search, LOL!

I'm pretty sure that GenTechPC will be the first to put up a gameplay vid (MW2 of course)
-
Yeah
I'm subscribed to their Youtube channel since I love to see new laptop videos and performance as they get released.
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Maybe so! I am sure the race is on! Doesn't really matter though..... I'll be watching them both!
-
-
lol
yessir! -

LOL! ALRIGHT NOW QUAD! You just remember, you start play'in with my quotes, and I'm gonna start play'in with yours! (woo hoo!)

YouTube - GenTechPC's Channel vid review is out!
-
Well they showed some bench scores at the end,,, anyone know how it compares to the G73JH???
-
i think about 700 less 3dmark.
-
thats a pretty crappy GPU score
-
uhh i think more than that?
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/458025-asus-g73-benchmark-thread.html
those are benches,,, but I think those could have also been OC'd
only 5-6 fps slower than the 5870 nothing to major,,, but you would think a refresh would be a upgrade, not a downgrade, but hopefully alot less problems... I still wish they would have went the GTX 470 route. -
Im sure in time new drivers will bring more performance to the 460m... The 5870m saw some serious improvments over time with drivers so it should be similar since this tech is still rather new...
The 5870 and the 460m are both good choices either way you look at it ... -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Yes, both are good choices, and either way, the G73 is a good buy for what you get. Also, we are yet to see 460m gaming marks, and it's DX11 performance.
-
my g73jh without OC and catalyst 10.6 and stock vbios:
I think that g73jw should have a 470 or 480 to be an upgrade
even so it is normal that asus launches "upgrades" with less graphic power:
g1s@8600gt>>>> g1sn@9500gt
g51j@gtx260>>>>g51jx@gts360 -
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Interesting! I see John, your vantage score went up 600+, over 9 months, just with new driver releases. Did I read that correctly? Hmmmmmm....... Nice! And do you suppose a similar showing of the 460m, over time?
-
Yeah im sure it will be very similar ... The card is to new and drivers are certainly going to mature .. To what degree no one ever knows but it certainly shouldnt get worse lol
...
-
Of course, it's just that no one want's to swallow the fact that the machine they paid $1,600+ is in the process of becoming obsolete...
Seriously people, grow up. A difference of a few hundred points on a benchmark test doesn't automatically invalidate a new GPU, especially one that's literally just been released. -
i ran that test back to back.
loaded 9.11 then just did a driver update to 10.8 and ran it again.
seems there was a pretty substantial difference. i'll do 10.3 in a bit, since i have like 7 drivers installed and i just jump back and forth.
-
Nice John, with some overclock you can get 9500 on Vantage easy.
-
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
I am laughing again!
RIGHT ON!
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
NICE!
Say John, when did you say you were getting your new G73JW?
-
now im laughing again!
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
You are welcome! My pleasure!
-
Yup, just like that.
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Yep, again, NICE!
John, understanding no two machines are exactly alike, on your JH, what percentage would you say you can amp things up...... still being both safe & stable?

vs
G73JH ATI HD5870 the same settings I recorded it back in February, however, the driver was 10.1, with 10.8 should get better performance.

Nvidia is the clear winner! /cheers
Nvidia only had tiny 1sec lag spikes here and there.
The first Ati video looks unplayable. Second is barely playable.
(unless its my computer lagging - i'm on a 10yr old dinosaur lol)
Thanks for all these great videos, Ken!
Not sure why there's so much Nvidia hate, when it clearly out performs the Ati in those vids. It's not like Nvidia slept with your wife, guys, c'mon ...less hate for Nvidia lol -
I hate envidia because they sold defectives Mobile GPUS (denying everything) and I do not trust them
If the 460m kills g73jw and g53jw in 1-2 years then come the complaints and surprises like 8400, 8600, 9650 and gtx260.... -
sorry, not going for that.
that 5870m is beating the 460m
why?
better fps
and if you pay attention to the gun fire...it is way faster with a cheaper gun in the first ati video vs the high end faster shooting gun in the gtx460m video.
and the second ati video is on enthusiast...dont see a gtx460m enthusiast video to compare.
i think your 10 year computer is playing tricks on you.
Yep, again, NICE!
well...you guys go by machines. i go by the parts as well as the machine it's in.
example: my 5870 is no where near as good as the 5870 in the clevo w870cu, but...my i7-720 now holds all the cpu benchmarking and over clocking records.
hummmm, probably around a 15 to 35 percent increase. -
My 8600m gt still works after 3 years, but thats because it wasn't soldered into the motherboard.
I have the same fear as you with nivida cards, they have better drivers but what use are they if your card appears to be made from junk quality and dies after 1 or 2 years?
I wonder if there's a way to test their quality without waiting such a long time... -
i think more gpus burned out with the onboard version because of the single fan for cpu and gpu. true..nvidia had their heat happy gpus...but hp/didn't help it any by using single gpu/cpu fan setups.(hp is just the example here)
-
g84 and g86 had a defective die : Nvidia's GPU Material Defect Cost $475.9 Million , it was not a fan setup problem.
Asus G73JW at GenTech for 1645$
