The 8600m GT in my Acer 5920g died and it was not soldered into the mobo. I went to another nvidia 8 series card that was not a part of the deffective chips and have been fine for 2 years.
-
The problem was in a internal solder material, not in the mobo-gpu solder

Funny, Sager didn't have these problems with their Clevo based laptops...Hmmm, I wonder if their renowned cooling solutions could have helped.
I haven't seen anything that could match Clevo cooling solutions for decades...until the ASUS ASUS G73JH/W. -
so like i said before. part is due to fan setup. which means..a defective gpu burns out far quicker. sorry, but we already put it to the test.
and again. this is not the nvidia bashing thread. you need to take that up in another part of the forums. -
..
I am excited to give the 460m a whirl but i seem to be in the minority lol... -
im in the "try any gpu for benching points at the bot" group...lol
-
Yeah well your reasons are a tad different then mine lol
..
I just want something new and from a totally different camp so this seems like it will fit the bill just fine...
Speedy just ordered a X7200 with 480SLI though so he is in a for a real treat..

that he is.

didnt see Widi...

I sure would like that
Also would like the Sleep charge function Toshiba has
I like Asus G72JW or NP 8850 or NP7280(x7200) -
Nvidia just released a major Driver update, 260.52 specifically targeted at the GeForce 400 series:
Tech ARP - NVIDIA Release 260 GeForce Drivers
Would be great if one of the dealers could install it and run some benchmarks. -

Vantage Score
Stock drivers 259:
260.63 Beta:
-
I dont get it, the new nvidia beta drivers more than doubled the cpu score for 3dmark vantage???
The gpu score is still a little lower: 6937 (vs ~7400 for 5870m), but the total score is quite higher for the G73jw (compared to G73jh-A1) now. -
-
Update:
Test 2 comes up even better
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
VERY NICE Ken!
My understanding, is this new beta driver is the first to actually address these new nVidia cards...... and WOW, what an improvement with a BETA driver no less! Looks like we may be in for some VERY pleasant surprises!
-
is that with physx on or off?
also...is that with turbo on or off as well? -
cpu score is so high coz physx is on...
-
Nice boost. btw, Ken, have you tried to OC the 460m?
-
-
-
seeing as how the cooling system has the temps drastically lower than the JH do you think IC diamond is worth the $75 it or should I just use that money to upgrade to a SSD? My main concern is that opening up the G73 is a pain just to apply some thermal compound at a later time myself, while I could easily upgrade the SSD.

This is PERFECT Ken

Very nice. Thanks Ken!

And this test is for Ryzeki:

I smell a rat... these drivers seem to have done something to the CPU and not GPU.. so something's wrong.. u just can't double CPU score with new drivers if CPU's speed stays the same.
-
I want to believe these results because i am going to place an order soon... but... Its like the old adage, If it's too good to be true...It probably isn't
-
q9650 4ghz + 2x285 :
with PHYSX:: GPU:20860//CPU:43632 //TOTAL: P23990
without physx:: GPU:21251//CPU:14289 //TOTAL: P18944
Scores are distorted, the test should be done without physx for comparison.
you can not compare two drivers doing test with Physx for one version and without physx for the other.... -
it's only 3 frames off in test one and 1/2 to 1 frame off in test 2 -
Ken please switch physx off in vantage runs, makes it more standardized and easier to compare...
-
-
may be he want to compare with 5870 in 73JH but from my knowledges, physx on/off isn't affect gpu score.
-
-
I manually turned off physx in Vanatage and ran the test again and here is the result:
-
Yeah and the GPU score remained the same which is all everyone should have been concerned about to begin with ..
Overall and CPU score mean squat in these instances and we were only wondering about the GPU which again was not influenced by Physx...
Thanks Ken and its good to see the drivers did infact boost the GPU score.. Cant wait to receive mine tomorrow from you....
-
haha. Gotta break the 10k GPU barrier
If it can overclock so good, I wonder why Nvidia choose to clock it so low. -
-
... Had i not owned a G73JH/Clevo8760/M17xR2/M15x already that had a 5870m in it i would have stuck with ATI but i wanted something different even if its a tad slower
..
-
The GTX480m is a fail anyways. A revamp should be on the way. Not many will actually buy one. I think they downclock it to make the 470m look worthwhile? -
I don't regret it one bitBoth machines are awesome anyways.
The only bad part of my machine is that I doubt I can get memory clocks high enough to be stable. It would be awesome I could push to 1100, but it seems I won't be able to. -
Nah you made a good choice and it seems your very content..
I wont say the 460m is unimpressive just yet though since it just hit the market and certainly deserves a chance to prove it self ... Its never going to live up to peoples expectations though no matter what magic Nvidia pulls out of its hat...
It will be a solid performer overall and as far as im concerned none of these cards are all that amazing compared to there desktop brethren..
-
these cards are all with in 3 fps of each other...that's really not a whole lot to get excited about. and since no one really got the 480m opened up to do anything...can really say what that cards max is just yet. and that will hold true for the 460m if it cant b unlocked either....
-
Yes and this why when i see the words "Kills" or "Crushes" i lol very hard
....
Killing and crushing would be like im getting 30fps and your 60-120fps ... Thats when its good to use terms like that ...
I know people get new hardware and defend it with there soul though so yeah its all good...
-
-
Actually i believe that a couple days after Speedy sold his machine he received and Email from Nibitor stating he had unlocked the bios ....
So the X7200 should be interesting to watch ....
I did not want another 12-14 pound laptop to game on so the X7200 is not for moi ... I move my machines around alot and like to use it on my lap from time to time as well as unplugged and the X7200 is none of that lol...
Its like the M17x and a boat anchor disguised as a laptop..
And since i talk to Speedy on the phone 5 times a day on average ill know all about how amazing that machine is first hand ...
Asus G73JW at GenTech for 1645$
