I'll just add my two cents about this laptop. At first i was NOT impressed with the laptops performance. Gaming was not as good as I had hoped - especially with CODBO. I chose to format this laptop and reinstall windows (minus the bloatware), as i do with all new laptops that i buy.

After installing the NVIDIA 265.66 beta drivers, this laptop has performed like an absolute beast! So pleased with it, CODBO runs fantastically with all setting maxed out. Temps are no where near an issue, rougly 68-70c at load. A very happy ASUS G73JW owner and looking forward to even more improvements with future driver releases.

    Hi All,

I have a question about FN key on G73JW, can I reverse it like if I don't have to press FN key to perform actions and with FN key I can use my F1 F2 keys? Just like other notebooks or macbooks?

    Thanks!

Hmm... The only thing i can think of is remapping the key using some special software.

Try using something like this to constantly emulate the fn key as depressed.

There may be a whole lot better software out there - this is just something i discovered after a minutes search.

I already searched the thread and i think this hasn't been asked before:
Does the 3.5mm works as S/PDIF output for this laptop?

I'm planning on getting a Logitech Z-5500 speakers and I obviously want to have 5.1 sound

Hey juanej, the 3.5mm definitely works as a S/PDIF output and I have just got the z-5500 system. Right now I'm only able to get 2 channels from the laptop and am currently finding a way to get 5.1.

EDIT: Oh I should also add that, I can get "emulated" 5.1 surround using the pro logic 2 effects on the z-5500. So all speakers do output sound.

Yes, it does support S/PDIF for 5.2 Surround Sound with the Z5500.

I did some modifications to a program called TouchFreeze a few months ago where I was hooking mouse input in C++. You can also do this in C#. I wrote a demo hooking keyboard input in C#. What you can't do is intercept the Fn key because it is a special modifier within the hardware as far as I could tell. I tried recording the output of pressing that key from within my hook. My program didn't see a registered keypress until the Fn was used in combination with one of the function keys. Anyway, I'm guessing you'll have to write your own hack for that since that is a pretty unusual request. I doubt anyone has a utility for it. It definitely wouldn't be too hard to do. Intercepting the keystrokes is pretty easy. I think the Fn plus F1 or F2 would still work since it "looks like" a completely different key to the operating system. However doing this would prevent the keys in question from ever doing their normal jobs.

I could dig up what I wrote and send it to you if you are a programmer and you're interested. PM me if you want it.

Do all G73JW-3DE have the LG matte panel or does Asus use 120Hz panels from other makers as well?

Hi, I have been reading through hundreds of pages trying to fix my new Asus g73jw, and have achieved (with my so called fixing) what I have found to be affectionatly called a brick...

    The model I bought is a G73JW-XR1 i7-840QM 1.5G GTX 460M 8GB RAM .

I had installed a copy of a work CAD program which did not install properly and then could not repair or uninstall. tried to take it back to restore point and all hell broke loose. It would freeze blue screen etc. read manual and came to the conclusion that I had to reformat? reformatted the computer which seemed to go alright reinstalled windows 7 64bit.

All ok had problems after with it not starting properlly every now and then, read manual again said to update bios. finally got windows to stay on while i tried to get the latest bios to update, I could not get it to work using easy flash with the latest 203 bios? read manual more try winflash....... all good loaded 203 and then shut down to restart. Would not start windows came up with error on start up and the windows kept trying to restore to original settings.

Read every page on half dozen forums and come to this forum saying dont mess with bios 203! so, I start it again and get to the boot screen, reads my flash drive and recognises v202, awesome, I think it will revert to the way it was before bios was changed. It go's through half its install cycle and then BAM, nothing, turned off and now I have nothing, it doesn't even recognise the power cable being plugged in. The only thing worse is the wife sitting there looking at me with that, "I knew you should not have bought that lap top in the US" look! (I'm now in outback QLD Australia).
Any ideas? I read the very helpful manual and it now tells me to send it to a service agent, great, is this my only option from here?

I realize that this is an undertaking that a newb should not have tried to tackle, its a shame that I am also a muppet that doesn't recognise his own limitations! Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks Ben (AKA "the muppet")

You probably would have been better served by restoring your laptop to it's factory state, and reinstall your apps, or just do a fresh OS install, instead of mucking around with the BIOS. Also, I prefer and recommend flashing from the BIOS EZ Flash utility instead of WinFlash. Why run the OS, especially an unstable one you are having issues with?

Anyhoo, you misflashed and have a brick. You will need to have it RMA'd so they can redo the flash. You may be able to save some hassle and see if a tech shop locally can do it, or at least order you a mobo from Asus if they cannot.

Put your drivers DVD in and see what it shows as not being installed. You need the ATK package.

Then, before you just return it, call tech support and let them help you. It is free, and could be more helpful than coming here because that is what they do for a living. In the odd chance that you get a bad support technician, hang up and call back to get someone else that may be better.

    Hello everyone!

I just got a new G73jw, and did a clean windows 7 install but...

I noticed that the Asus factory windows install has a different background at the logon screen.

If anyone could please post a zip files of the Asus logon screen files (all the resolutions that are there) that would be great.

    Thanks!

    hi,
afaik the JW's GPU is 3d capable right (gtx460M)? i have a problem with the latest nvidia driver. the 3d driver itself installs properly, but on the nvidia control panel, the 3d option cannot be found anywhere so i cant turn it on. did a clean driver reinstall too, that didnt help either. any ideas how could i make it work? (i own a plain g73jw-tz075v, not the 3d version, but since my desktop machine has a geforce 9800GTX, and has the 3d option regardless that its almost 3 years old, i would be surprised that the JW would not.)

    thanks in advance: BW

(sorry for not editing my last post, but i think this stands as an alone post itself. if not, sorry! )

Still nothing. As i had mentioned before, I own a NON 3d JW(although Nvidia ads the GTX460M as 3d Vision capable). Thought i could play left 4 dead 2 with 3d though, as i did with my geforce 9800 gtx with my desktop pc.

The following error pops up when i try to install the 3d vison driver, and when I press Ok, the following error message pops up (see linked image): [IMG]

Any thoughts on that? I did exactly everything as Nathan posted.

I hear theres a common problem with Asus G73jw freezing..

I have this problem, and wondered if you found a solution to this..

It started after the first ASUS Live Uppdate
And when it happends there is nothing to do but to restart the computer.

Help is deeeeply appreciated :' ) I've no idea what to do, and as I got the notebook just 3 weeks ago this is so frustrating!

    G73JW-A1 @ 800/1600/1455 with Furmark 1.90

As you can see, it tops off nicely @ 83C. I ran it for a 1/2 hr before this, but didn't get the pic, so I ran it again for another 10 min.

I read earlier that people were experiencing random shutdowns during gaming. My laptop also shuts down randomly, not only during gaming. Temps are all low. I do have the computer OC'd, GTX 460m = 800/1600 and 1600 memory. CPU = 150mhz FSB. I ran prime95 for 8 hours at 150mhz and it performed fine, didn't shutdown, no errors.

Anyone have any ideas? It doesn't create a dump file or anything, just shuts down real fast, like it lost power completely, the battery is inserted.

Did you also test the OC of the GPU for stability?
You said you run prime95 for 8 hours...even though it still could be the RAM or CPU crashed imo...

You could try and go to the event log and check whether there are some warnings immediately before the crash (GPU driver crash or CPU error...)
You'll find it in the system logs.

Edit: By the way... 1600 memory? How?

Err... it's more or less impossible to fry something with the above mentioned OC. The CPU or GPU will shutdown automatically when there's a serious problem. It doesn't feel nice watching such a crash but it doesn't hurt the hardware.

Tell me what u guys think of this deal, yay or nay. A g73jh bbx09, for 800 , 1 year left on the warranty and it was used for 7 months, reason why warranty is almost over is cause a computer with the original warranty was returned for the g73jh bbx09. Should I do the deal the laptop is in perfect condition. But it is used. Yay or nay?

Get the latest version of MSI Afterburner, it'll let you tone it up further. It handles 1600 fine, no artifacts on Furmark. I toned down the memory though, to 1500, and I turned off my sidebar, rumor says this may cause the same problem *shrug*. I also un installed/reinstalled my nvidia drivers, so hopefully these will fix it.

I have a feeling it may be the RAM, given the nature of the shutdown. When the CPU freaks out, it will go blue screen and create a dump file, this just shuts down, loss of power. Maybe my power supply is being stressed?? Not sure. I do have 8 GB of RAM, so I am using all the slots...

EDIT: If you have a G73 and aren't overclocking... You should do more research, this machine was designed to OC.

Ah, ok, nice... didn't know there was a new version. Now you can go higher, cool... up to 1625. I wonder how well the card can handle this, lol.

I don't think your power supply is too stressed, I guess you haven't an extreme processor and even if you had one there shouldn't be a problem.
The CPU OC (which may crash the RAM) is probably causing this.

You could try running the system with only the GPU overclocked and gaming a bit and see whether something happens. Then the same with only the CPU OCed... this way you may be able to recreate the problem.
Then you could exclude one of the options...

It's really up to you. :D If you badly need a laptop right now then Yahahay! :D there are a handful of g73jh's that i saw in bestbuy and some other e-stores that are new and cheap. :)

    Quick question!
Just curious if there's a link/thread here that lists down all the games that can be set on the highest(or post high :D) settings on the g73jh with the ATI HD 5870? :p

@hteng and others who have or had random shutdowns during gaming.

how exactly did you solve it ? i understand you all have/had the cpu oc'ed, or is this a standard thing asus did ? if so how can i set it back to factory default ?

even though i dont have the laptop in this topic i do have exactly the same problem with my asus et2400xvt b034e, had the comp replaced the first time got a new one, and it had the same problem. sent it to asus for rma, after 2 months they replaced the motherboard. problem still occurs however it doesnt happen that often anymore (had 2 blackouts in 1 week so far).

hello guys... here's a question about the 460gtx: I want to buy a vga to rca cable, so I can connect my asus g73jw to my TV (not LCD or LED). I've heard that in order to connect them, the vga card must have "tv-out capability". Does the Geforce 460 have it? bye !!! thanx !!!

@chochanga I don't think it does, the tv-out feature has been lacking on newer cards for a while now, it's pretty much depreciated. I could be wrong - NVIDIA doesn't really make it easy to find out. But on the previous generation cards this feature hasn't existed. You will probably need a converter box for that.

Anyone knows if G73JW supports 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system?

Like... real surround sound.. not software tweak (fake)

I know the laptop does come with THX & EAX tools, but they seems complicate for me...

It supports up to 7.1 via HDMI.

The analog ports and toslink are stereo.
