I hope Gary finds us a way to get a piece of those new pads on the JH, would have significant impact on the temps

Any Asus seller giving 1 yr no interest deal like Dell ?
Thanks -

I am not aware of any ASUS Reseller offering financing. Your best option is to set up a new Credit Card account as many offer 0% interest for 1 year. Here is a good website showing different credit card issuer's specials.

Justin,
It seems the new Asus warranty options (onsite, 4 year) have disappeared from Xotic PC's website when ordering a new G73JW or G73JH.
What happened to them? -
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
ASUS initially launched them with their September Price Sheet and they stated they cannot offer them to end users at this time, only for business/School/Education. They said they are planning on having them available in the future for end users, unfortunately not yet.
Any ones that we have sold while they were listed ASUS is taking care of. -
Read the whole thing. A little confused here.
Anyone know the power consumption on the JW?
Does the Nvidia 460 have switchable graphic option for low power consumption tasks like internet surfing or word processing?
If not, does the power consumption stay constant at 150w? -
No switchable graphics but both the CPU and GPU downclock based on your needs ....
This machine does not have a ton of battery life if thats what your in need of ?...
You can squeeze out a couple hours total of battery with the right settings though ... Not great but not terrible for such a large and power hungry laptop... -
Thanks, mate. I won't be using it as a portable (I have an iPad for that). But I do live in a country where power outages are common, sometimes for hours a day during certain seasons. And when I'm on backup power (a battery-run inverter), I have to be careful of how much power I'm using. If it ran at full 150w all the time, even whilst surfing, I would have been in trouble. =)

No when they say School they mean an actual School not for just a single end user like a student...

Can we get an average temp for the 460M? At first, I thought it was on par with the 5870, but the XoticPC video guy said it was significantly cooler, by over 15C...
-
It is vastly cooler out of the box compared to the 5870.. If you go into the JH though you can get the temps down alot compared to when it shipped but opening that machine up is not for everyone
..
I have done it a few times and i cant say i enjoy it myself and i have opened a TON of laptops over the years... -
Yeah, the whole re-pasting business just doesn't give me a good vibe...I can fix driver and OS problems, but I draw the line at dissecting new laptops.
Hopefully, these low temps will allow substantial overclocking. I don't do that sort of thing, but I guess that's almost a gamer pastime now... -
Oh yeah a mild overclock is the norm for many people now and you may not have to do it all the time but its nice to know that the card is running cool enough that if you need to you will have the headroom(low temps) to do so...

Anyone know when Asus will offer onsite warranty for individuals? -
Only thing i wish i had from the JW is the touchpad. Im getting real annoyed with this single button style one...
Oh and does the JW also have keyboard missing keystrokes troubles with the touchpad enabled (since as i see its using the same ATK and stock Synaptics drivers)? -
Have you tried to overclock the 460m? -
I dont believe he has and clearly based on the Crysis framerates that game is just broken on the 460 in comparison to some other games on the same card going head to head with the 5870..
I should have my JW next week so i know ill be trying a few things but its going to boil down to some new drivers im sure for any real type of performance gains ... -

I think I, and I'm sure most people want to know how many of the problems from the G73JH the JW has inherited.
For those that are using/testing the JW please share. -
-
Its to early to say what if any problems the machine has..
I dont think i have seen one end user on the boards with the machine yet ?..
I think alot of that has to do with the fact that anyone who wanted a G73 already has one for the most part...
-
-
Yeah ill have one in hand next week but people should have ? already started receiving them ..
Its also possible that the people who do have them could care less about posting on NBR lol... -
Only problem I could see carrying on from the JH is the keyboard driver problem. Kinda weird that in 2010 that could still be an issue.
-
Yeah at this point im not sure they will ever fix that issue...
I cant say i type that fast that it has ever been a problem for me but i know enough people have complained about it so it must be there ... -
Hello Everyone,
I've been following the Asus forums for the last couple of weeks to get a feel
for the G73jh or G73jw. Just want to say thanks to all the helpful people on
this site. I'm pretty pumped for the jw and will be placing my order soon.
I'm just going to wait for a few actual user reviews to surface in the next
few days. Sounds like Quadzilla will have one next week and can't wait to
hear his thoughts on it.
I have a question about the stock blu-ray drive. This will be my first drive of
this type and I assume it will also be able to read and write Dvds, DL Dvds
and Cds. I'm not big into Blu-ray but if it has it I'll give it a shot.
Thanks again!!! -
Yeah the drive will handle all your DVD and CD burning needs and just read Blurays ..
-
I'm debating between buying this or waiting for the 120Hz screen. Ahhhhh!! The wait is painful.
-
I'm not too sure if 3-D gaming is that great b/c alot of posters mentioned they can only handle it for 45min before getting dizzy. I'm sure everyone has a different tolerance to it, though.
-
-
3D, of course, is a different story altogether because you're basically compounding two images.
Update : disregard my comment, it WILL help for gaming, and if you watch sports programming on your computer. It, however, is not recommend for movies as it makes them look fake. Movies use the blurrier 60 hz to an advantage as it hides the "fakeness" of special effects. -
Seeing how the temps on the jw seem to be alot better than the jh does anyone think the ic diamond upgrade is necessary on the jw?
-
I guess with the great venting system, you can go without paste, but if one buys a laptop with a mediocre venting system, then thermal pasting right off the bat is ideal, since it trims 10c off the temp. I put thermal paste on my MSI GX740 b/c I thought it would burn my legs during gaming, but since the G53/73 vents can't really do that, I see no sense in getting it b/c of the positioning of the vents. -
Second, you are confusing a 120hz refreshrate screen, with a "120hz" common fake LCDs TV. The effect you are talking about is known as motion interpolation. The first batch of LCDs with supposed 120hz used this technique that created interwined new frames copying what was before it. The effect is a smoother video since common tv shows are between around 30fps. Since movies run at 24fps, getting motion interpolation active makes them around 48fps, giving it a "real life" feeling, instead of a movie feeling. This is a cheap way to increase motion but it is actually detrimental to gaming, as it introduces video lag in the order of about 100ms or more depending on what you are playing. The fake 120/240hz screens often have the monkier of TruMotion, RealMotion etc etc.
Finally, having a 120hz screen just means you are capable of displaying up to 120fps. games, video, movie will be displayed at its recorded fps, so you won't get any benefits unless what you are watching/playing is well in excess of 60fps onwards. -
Thank you for the very informative post, Ryzeki. With all that in mind and knowing the 460m realistically will not be able to handle 3d gaming at 1080p, is it really wise to wait for the JW-3D? I'm sorely tempted to wait but if 3d gaming isn't viable this early in the tech then I'll happily order my JW right now!
-
My ordering fingers will wait until the first wave of reviews come in over the next two weeks.
-
yeah I'm waiting for the reviews too. As soon as I hear that the performance is close enough to the 5870 (G73jh), I'm ordering one. It runs much cooler so no worrying about getting one that I have have to RMA to fix and I probably don't have to deal with crazy bios/vbios updates and possible failure with new drivers.
-
I´m just waiting for first review, and ordering then.. but I´m a little bit dissapointed with the power of 460M in Crysis. I checked the video review in Crysis and against the power of the HD5870, it seems to be a little slow... on 1080p res. gamer set. was the average FPS around 30FPS for the 460. HD5870 was about 10FPS more.. In highes settings was FPS for 460M around 15 FPS, which is barely playable, but FPS of Radeon was around 28FPS..
That is a huge difference for me.. I know that new drivers should improve the performance.. but still...
Aaaa.. damn.. I´m looking foreward to some reviews..

Nvidia just released a major Driver update, 260.52 specifically targeted at the GeForce 400 series:
Tech ARP - NVIDIA Release 260 GeForce Drivers
Would be great if one of the dealers could install it and run some benchmarks. -
Hope that it´ll be working well..

Waiting for in depth reviews as well.
I may even pull the trigger on a G73JH depending on the outcome.
Can't wait to unload my XPS M1710 on Ebay. -
-
For everyone else. Don't expect the 460m to get over the HD5870m. Even with driver updates, you will still be around similar performance. Consider them about the same. If the machine runs cool, just overclock to get more out of it. My current OC HD5870 completely destroys the 460m and my temps are in the same range.
Either 460m or HD5870 will be decent for gaming. Pick your games and check scores. -
