G46/G750 is aluminum. Reviews say it, Asus themselves say it, owners of G46 say it.

This looks promising and the new 17" G-series definitely makes the short list.
However, I need battery life. Lack of Optimus has kept me from bumping up to anything newer than my G73. If they include Optimus in this rig it's definitely in the running. If not, well... I'll be considering a 17" notebook that combines a powerful discrete GPU with switchable graphics. I'm not gaming or doing heavy 3D work all the time, I don't mind lugging a machine of this size around... I just don't want to be tethered to a power outlet all the time. -
What is the point in nit including Optimus anyway? Haswell is getting quite a GPU boost, and will be able to handle all tasks, that aren't hardcore gaming, at a fraction of the power drain. A lot of users here don't like Optimus, why is that? I use my laptop plugged in 99% of the time, but for that 1%, battery life really matters.

Optimus is a PITA as everything display related is controlled by the iGPU - no display overclocking, no 3D Vision, no Nvidia colour settings/pallet DAC modifications etc.
The only way around this is to have a fully muxed GPU configuration which as far as I know only Alienware currently do and so highly unlikely to come to the G series.
I will be avoiding Optimus in future. -
Well, Optimus is a must have on the G750 for me... I won't buy one without it. It works fantastic on my G46, I can game plugged in all I want using dedicated GPU, then unplug and have 6+ hours of legit mobile work usage out of the same machine. As others have said, even though the 17's are big, there are still plenty of times I'm not around an outlet, and my previous G73 with it's hour of battery life just didn't cut it.

No optimus means better display options and slightly better performance.
-
what is he talking about? i can do all that with Optimus -__- look at the facts, not the past. technology improves every day, if it sucked yesterday doesn't mean it won't improve tomorrow. Optimus is really good for battery and performance when needed -
what iaTa saying is with Optimus enabled it can't support nVidia 3D vision because the HDMI is hard wired with Intel HD Graphics instead of nVidia GPU, therefore, it doesn't support 120Hz output via HDMI. -
Guys no need to get on my case about the aluminum palmrest on the G46VW. It was an honest mistake and gleaned from my impressions trying it out at a Best Buy for 15 minutes, not owning it. Applications of fake brushed aluminum are pretty common, so it's not like manufacturers don't use it. For example, my Seagate Backup Plus external drive has a faux brushed aluminum surface that is plastic. You would never guess it wasn't real aluminum unless you felt and used it.
-
Thanks for explaining Ken. -
Okay, so 2000 euros for the 780m with the SSD doesn't sound too expensive (although I will probably have to add 200 euros to the price if I buy it in Slovenia) and I like that the price is a bit lowered by the fact that it has 24GB of RAM instead of 32, because that seems like a bit of an overkill, especially if you don't do 3D graphics design. If the prices are already leaked for all of the models, does that indicate a simultaneous launch of the 780m versions? And btw, do all of them have 3D screens? That's also one thing I could do without.
The G46 has Optimus? Then it stands to reason that the G750 would have it too. Some of the greatest criticisms of the older models (besides the mediocre sound) was the short battery life. And as it says in previous posts, I'm sure these new generations of Optimus will have a lot of fixes, especially with Haswell marketing the onboard GPU so much.
(Had to edit to fix the spelling mistakes, writing on a phone is not exactly optimal)

No Thunderbolt? Are you kidding me... Why on earth did they chose not to support it? Was it bugged on previous ROG laptops?
-
Would love to see some pics to look at the new design, I know it probably diidn't change much over last model but I hope the got rid of the 2 tone keyboard look . Will be keeping an eye on this.
-
IKAS, there are a lot of pics of it a few pages back, the design is now the same as the G46. It has a all aluminum black palmrest and so on. If you ask me, it looks great! And on one of those pics you can see that there is a thunderbolt port on the right side of the laptop. At least I think that's thunderbolt.

Confused this thread with the other G750 thread but thanks for pointing that out, it does look sexy and glad the went back to the original look and have the interior all one color. I have to admit it does lookg great.

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
is it me or the g73 went on a diet?
-
No Optimus => Not interested.
Might seem silly to discount it so quickly - and it's a crying shame, because it looks basically perfect otherwise - but there are so many benefits to Optimus and only a couple of downsides. A seven hour battery life means a laptop can get through a full day of college. A two hour battery life is useless. At least offer it on the non-3D models. -
-
-
Of course this is 100% my own opinionbut for my money pitiful battery life for $2,500 isn't an option. Disappointed, as it would have been a fun complement to my g46 when not on the road but still wanted the freedom of a laptop to move around the house/deck freely.
-
-
Optimus is nice but even without it the GTX 680M is able to downclock all the way down to 135MHz/324MHz when not gaming. 720MHz/900MHz is gaming clocks.
So without Optimus the GPU won`t produce much heat or use much power.
Asus probably figured that the little heat is easily removed by the good cooling system Asus G-series is known for. -
-
-
-
Nowhere near 700%. Maybe an hour difference at most.
Not worth the negatives IMO. -

Also the question becomes what are the priorities of the machine and the trade offs.

On my G46 with only a 660m, just leaving it enabled KILLS battery life; ie with Optimus enabled, I get legit almost silent usage of 6-8 hours actually using the laptop for random Office 2013, web browsing, videos, Steam downloading, etc... doing the exact same stuff, only without noticing something was set to keep the 660m active, battery life is 2 hours or so, and the fan will randomly cycle for the GPU. Just see the G46 thread for the complaints, guys that have the GPU enabled without knowing are always complaining about terrible battery life. It's not under significant load, it's just enabled.
Show me the G750 can get 6+ hours of battery life with the 780m only option with comparable usage above in silence and I'll completely jump on board. Optimus exists for a reason, and the power and cooling reduction fits within the whole concept for having a laptop for my needs. Mostly plugged in on my desk, but the few times a week I take it mobile 1-2 hours is worthless.
To each his own of course, but a 10lbs, 1 hour "unplugged" laptop is no longer appealing. Been there, done that, trashed the T-shirt.
Now a 17" high end desktop replacement that actually CAN be used for more than a few hours when wanted or needed on battery that incorporates the Asus G series design I love? Game on! It's gonna be quite a bit more difference than 1 hour I dare say, but I'd be super excited again if I'm wrong! -
Firstly you are comparing a 14" laptop with a 17". Completely different kettle of fish. Percentage wise the dGPU will use more battery in a 14" compared to a 17".
Extra components in a 17" such as larger/brighter/higher res screen, extra fans, extra HDD, optical drive, extra ports/features etc all reduce the comparative battery usage of individual components including the dGPU.
Secondly your figures are way off. It is not possible for a G46 with an active but downclocked 660M to last 1 to 2 hours or with Optimus enabled and identical usage patterns to last up to 8 hours.
Either pure exaggeration or a completely different set of variables/conditions. A downclocked 660M simply does not use enough power to make that much of a difference. Something is up.
EDIT: As I suspected
To save an hour of battery Optimus just isn't worth the hassle/negatives. -
I don't care about Optimus in these big laptops. If it gets 2 to 3 hours of battery life, that more than enough for me. I'm more interested in whether it's standard MXM or not.
-
Not with a 780m . My M17xR4 using the 680m i would best a couple hours streaming movies and running on the intel i could go 5 hours every single time. Did plenty of testing because i had 2 different R4s, one with the 120hz screen and no optimus set down to 60hz just to watch movies, then the non 3d model running just the 680 for movie streaming . Optimus makes a huge difference if battery life is of concern to you .
So on a 17inch machine you will get easily and i do mean easily nearly 3 hours extra. Or depending on the size of the battery you will have to figure percentages. -
Streaming movies, so Flash would have been using the 680M for hardware acceleration and pushing the clocks up.
I get an extra hour doing general web browsing with my 680M disabled compared to idle clocks. -
Well, even if it's just an extra hour (which is inconclusive, people are obviously getting different results), that's a 50% increase. Besides, the 17" laptop houses a bigger battery to compensate for the larger screen, the optical drive, etc. So IMO it still makes sense to have Optimus in the G750, atleast if they make some non 3D models. I would definitely go for that option, because I never liked 3D. Besides, more choices never hurt anyone. Can't Optimus be disabled in the BIOS, btw?
Sent from my XT890 using Tapatalk 2 -
No unless the GPU setup is fully muxed everything is physically routed through the iGPU, both the internal screen and external display connections. A BIOS setting cannot change this.
It's not only a lack of stereo 3D gaming it's also a lack of 120Hz 2D, along with the issues I mentioned previously.
Anyway I think it's likely the G750 will be launched without Optimus as ASUS are likely to bring out a 3D model (unless Haswell has changed things in this regard). -
Optimus would be very nice but not a deal breaker, well see exactly how power effecient Haswell chips are now.
-
iaTa: You're wrong. I'm sorry, but there's no other way about it.
My 17" Inspiron 17R SE with Optimus enabled got 7-7.5 hours of battery life with basic web browsing.
I set explorer.exe to use the dedicated GPU (there-by leaving it enabled all the time, but at lowest clocks) and the battery life? 2.5 hours.
Yes, dedicated GPUs do suck that much power. You're quoting reviews at people who have actually used (extensively, most times) these laptops. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well asus know they don't have optimus so will likely design it slightly differently power wise to help that fact.
-
The figures were exaggerated as proven by multiple sources including other forum posts.
Sorry but I stand by my previous comments and once again a 5 hour reduction in battery life cannot be due solely to an idle 650M. -
Irrefutable evidence based on one review where they didn't compare the IGPU with the dedicated card, and gave unquantifiable figures gets priority over users' proven long-term experience. Right.
Well, at least you'll be happy in the knowledge that your laptop without Optimus gets pretty much the same battery life, minus an hour or so, as one with Optimus, based on your extensive research. I, meanwhile, will be happy with a minimum of seven hours battery life. I'll probably just be imagining it though. -
Okay, this is slowly getting out of hand. I guess we can all agree, that Optimus helps save battery life, but how much exactly depends on what you are doing with the laptop, how Optimus is configured, and what kind of a system you are running it on. The point is, that even if it increases the battery life by one hour, it's something that I would want in a laptop, since the point in having one is to be able to use it while unplugged and to carry it with you. Also, Haswell is supposed to be more energy efficient, and have a better GPU, and the 780m will probably have an even newer version of Optimus, so we really can't know for sure, what the pros or cons of it will be. I guess we will have to see. But for me battery life > 3D gaming/output. It's a subjective thing.
-
Its fine that people do not want or care about Optimus as it certainly has its pros/cons but the cons have become so much less due to Nvidia addressing pretty much everything that was wrong with it from the inception.
So if i were buying a G750 would i want Optimus ? You bet i would.
Would the G750 not having Optimus sway my buying decision at all ?. Possibly yes. Haswell is supposed to have alot of power saving features built in so we shall see if that can help squeeze out an extra hour and a half or so of battery for people who need it.
I will not argue about Optimus because i have used it so many times personally under all circumstances vs the dedicated GPUs and it is just amazing how much more off the wall time i got. It is hours more and multiple of those. -
Since we all love graphs, compare the Optimus equipped Alienware M17x R3 and R4 against the ASUS G74 in these battery life tests.
Open and shut case, no? Optimus looks good for a 2+ hours difference.
That may not affect my decision, as I rarely need more than 2 hours, but I can definitely see why having 4-5 hours is a big deal to someone else -
Looking at those graphs the difference is absolutely nowhere near the ridiculous claims of 300% to 700% savings.
Taking the four 17" machines on those graphs:
Normalized Idle: 2.66 Min/Wh to 3.8/3.69/3.42 Min/Wh = 43/39/29% increase
Normalized Internet: 1.95 Min/Wh to 3.26/3.16/2.79 Min/Wh = 67/62/43% increase
Normalized Video: 1.82 Min/Wh to 2.7/2.66/2.63 Min/Wh = 48/46/45% increase
The only Sandy Bridge CPUs are the G74 and the M17x R3 so you could say the 29/43/48% figures are the closest matched (although the M17x R3 CPU is slightly faster none of those tests would have maxed the CPU).
This proves my point. If a 17" machine lasts 2 to 3 hours without Optimus (as per the G74) you would only be looking at an extra 50% maximum (1 to 1.5 hours) or 30% minimum (0.6 to 1 hour) with Optimus.
People love to exaggerate when they haven't even done fair comparative testing.
Open and shut case, I'd say so. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Optimus does increase load consumption somewhat though
But it does mean you get to overclock the inbuilt display and any connected to it -
