Well, bringing a monitor would be a moot point since we are talking about plugging a laptop to an existing monitor/TV. For carrying cables, we are talking about the same volume of cables as you need to carry with G750's power adapter cable. Probably less volume since you need only a power cable. Again, we are talking about plugging it into an existing system.

I know the advantages of laptops since I do bring these to business trips. I am not disputing the obvious advantages.

You can build a rig that surpasses G750 wit 780m with about the same or less overall volume of G750. Some mini-itx gaming cases come with a handle even. It will be taller than G750 but will have less dimension eslewhere. About two thick books filed up is about the volume you need to put in desktop 770 and a decent quad-core. I'd know since I am using such a system as my main rig. It's constructed from 100% aluminum as well.

    IMG_2458.JPG

That rig can house 4 3.5inch HDDs and 1 2.5 inch HDD. There are cases that can house fewer HDDs and have much less volume while allowing gaming video cards.

How is it a moot point? When I'm at hope I and play games I hook my laptop up to my TV. When I'm traveling I'm doing work and just want to take the system with me. In this case a laptop is far superior to any sort of tower.

Because this discussion began with Hendrickson hooking the laptop to a bigger monitor at home. Thus needing 780m.

As I said, I am not disputing the obvious advantages. I am not bringing my desktop even if I've built it to be portable. I am choosing my laptop over my desktop on trips. Though there is no way I am hugging G750 around. I've purchased G750 to be DTR and my desk is where my G750 will spend rest of its life.

I am shopping for a smaller laptop now, 13inch hopefully.

Is there anyway to disable gpu and cpu throttling on battery mode? I found the setting to disable it for the CPU but have not found any solution to stop the gpu's.

Update: Holy crab, I just did a realtek driver update via the asus web, now waves maxaudio is giving me this error "MaxxAudio processes internal speakers output only". Anyone has a fix for this?

The battery is incapable of fully powering both GPU and CPU without being damaged. This is true for any high end notebook.

Am i the only one who had bad luck with the CHI MEI panel that looks like a protective foil is still attached onto the screen...but there is none ? the matte screen looks like s h i t, when I move any bright colored window slowly over my screen, it looks like a mixture between funky colored dirt is sitting right ontop of my panel, not moving, just giving me the impression of a tft screen 20 years ago ...

ASUS gimme a 120Hz semi glossy screen!

Its a little grainy, because its matte. But dirt on it? Yours must be faulty, RMA it. I found mine to be great, overclocks to 100hz even!, its super bright. Much brighter than my MSI Gt60's

With lights and sunlight the screen is very good. No reflections at all.

Also the 770M plays skyrim at 2560 x 1440p in Ultra no problem! First boot up it detects and sets everything to Ultra. I'm impressed, my GT60 with 780M played it fine, but with turbo roaring fan noise....

G750JX vs GT60 780M, The G750 won in my books. Can't beat this units cooling and noise levels. I decided that I can happily game at 50 fps vs 90fps with the 780M.

Well said. The GTX 770m also handles Bf3 max settings with 4x MSAA 1920 x 1080 at 35-45fps. Gaming now as i'm typing this :D

It might not handle it at 2560 x 1080p however.... I might have to drop the MSAA. I really dont play BF3 anymore due to undetected aimbots.

So far so good. My clean install runs great. I highly recommend a 840 Pro SSD in this, its so snappy.
I tested raid 0 SSD's its way to fast, more than my needs and a waste. Unless your encoding HD vids all day.

Only thing I lack is the ASUS G750 default install background, can someone please so kind and upload the full 1980 x 1080p background?

Does anyone know if a generic HDD caddy will work to replace the DVD drive? Haven't used one for years, so I'd rather remove it and save some slight weight.

What is the native SSD on the G750JX -DB71? Any name or brand? How does it compare to Samsung 850 PRO in terms of Read/Write speed and max write cycles

    Thanks

I was looking for exactly this. I'm about to re paste my CPU, GPU. All these photos will help in the process. I've repasted the G73,G74 and G53 so I had a basic idea. This will make things faster for me

Has anyone found where to buy a 4GB stick of that Hynix 1600Mhz 1.35v Ram asus but in the machine?

Yeah it would be nice if Asus finally offered an upgrade/maintenance friendly gaming laptop a la Clevo/Alienware/Msi, do not get me wrong I love the looks of this beast, but making things friendlier would definitely attract more buyers .

Nop it is copper paint to transfer heat to the plastic....it like the case itself is a heatsink. Only thing that not that good of a heatsink.
It looks like metal from an angle. You can see that in some places looks more like copper.

Yes it will work, standard size and sata optical drive connector.

I've had some luck using Asus USB3 boosted drivers. Managed to increase my Sandisk Extreme usb3 64GB speeds by about 60MB/s read and 20MB/s write using usb 3. Not bad :)

Before my max reads were around 200Mb/s and write 190Mb/s too. Now I get this:

Drivers are here: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/USB3Boost.zip You can't use the installer, but go to folder Windows8/ USB3 boost. Install the drivers and reboot. Retest your USB3 flash drive and see the increased speed :D

I also repasted my CPU and GPU. About 5-6 degrees cooler on the 770M and about 5-6 on the CPU. Not bad. I took many photos and will upload them soon for reference.

My temps after one hour playing GTA IV BOTG. Max temps are much much lower now after the repaste with IC Liquid Pro
    [IMG]

Maybe we should open a G750jx/jw owners lounge? The G750JH will be a different beast...

Also the 770M is underrated, I can run GTA IV at 52 FPS in max settings @ 2560 x 1440p. 100 view, 100 details and 100 traffic. Its very capable and very cool running.

Bahahahaha, Asus still in the stone age when it comes to design I see. Not only do they use non upgradable GPU and CPU, but the whole repasting procedure is retarded at best.

Talk about doing everything they can to make it as hard as possible for the customer.

    Good guide though.

Well retarded that we have no access in the first place to repaste, yes it is. Alot of work, yes. It runs cool and quite stock. Even without the repaste. Unlike my MSI GT60-2OD, that I sent back that hit 90 degrees. GPU maxes out at 63 degrees and CPU about the same. CPU, its a good 15 degrees cooler in idle and 30 when taxed than the MSI Gt60/gt70 too.

I had both machines at one point, I opted for the less powerful 770M, but quite and cool running dual fan G750 over the poorer build quality GT60 with fan noise issues and heat issues.

If ASUS used replaceable CPUs and GPUs and built designs that were easier to take apart, it would easily go toe-to-toe with Alienware. Except in warranty and chassis sturdiness, but the ROG laptops are cheaper.

I wish they were easy to work on too.

Also it's not fair to compare a 780M notebook to a 770M notebook when looking at cooling.

The 780M draws a LOT more power.

nice disassembly pics! what would you say is the risk of damaging the keyboard and touchpad ribbons when detaching them? do they have the design where you flip a little lever to stop and release them? my old Envy has a touchpad ribbon that needs to be SHOVED into the slot, which meant it broke after 3 times I opened it up...

Thats True, but even comparing the CPU's which are basically the same apart from one is soldiered to the motherboard its much cooler and quieter. The 780M is a very nice card, packs a punch but needs some serious cooling when its running at 100%.

Its a little tricky, they are the pushin till it stops then flip down the lever type (when putting them back) Removing them is easier, just fill up the black lever and it comes out.

A would not attempt this if your not experienced with this sort of thing. The MSI was easy, remove large service panel, removed heat sinks. Repasted and done :) I can see why resellers like them for that. Easy to, for example to add a 4930XM, but really the 4700 is pwoerful enough i think for most out there.

There was a spare connector I noted that said SSD. Must be used on the SSD models.

Overall apart from getting to the motherboard, the design is good and I like that fact you can replace the power plug, switch and USB boards. Without the need to replace the whole board.

I would like to mod my keyboard by adding some colored films.
I've been looking for it but I couldn't know what glue is used. I am worried that if I use the wrong glue, I can't remove the colored film later and I might break the sheet and the keyboard as well.

So does anyone know what glue that they use between the plastic sheet and the keyboard?

the easiest glue to use, I guess, would be glue dots. it's the rubbery transparent one they use to stick credit cards to the letter when they send it to you through the mail. VERY easy to remove.

Well, in his defense, he did say that the guide is good. And criticism isn't a bad thing, he has a point, if you want the laptop to be user accessible and you aren't handy with a wrench, this isn't the laptop for you.

Not to even mention they are comparing a 15 inch notebook against a 17 inch.
GT60 have 780M with 1536 CUDA cores, G750 have 770M with 960 cores. Do the math.

Personally I think 780M is too much for a 15 incher. Its the most powerful mobile GPU we will ever see from Kepler.

You can't get a real idea of sound from a recording like that. It can only be used as a comparison if another device is recorded, otherwise you have no idea about levels/sensitivity etc, etc.
