I have just checked the Asus website and they list the G750JY with 8gb 980m. So I would imagine they will be releasing a refreshed model soon.
It would be a dilemma now if this is true to either get a G750JY or G751JY.

For me, I could not care less about the 4 vs. 8GB of video RAM, I do however care about the IPS screen, and the PCIE 4x m.2 slot. As disk speed is of importance to me I was thrilled by this last item. While current shipping disk pull around 1000MB/s read and 800MB/s write, as these drives grow in popularity the m.2 slot in the G751 will allow around 1600MB/s read and writes.

Seams like everything else is pure aesthetics, having seen both in person I do like the looks of the G751 better.

If you are torn create a pro and con list as it will all be subjective.

JoshInDaPhils, the G751JY has 3 IO ports for storage + optical bay. The reports are that the Bay 1 M.2 shares with a SATA III port, the 2nd Bay has a SATA II port, and the Optical Bay will run at slightly less than SATA II speed.

So you can't RAID anything, as there is only 1 SATA III port, those that have tried reported speeds over just over 500MB/sec.

    Reports for the M.2 Port are 700MB/sec - 900MB/sec - 256GB vs 512GB parts.

The G750JH 2 x RAID0 M.2 SATA board runs at between 1000MB/sec and 1100MB/sec Read and 600MB/sec - 1000MB/sec, depending on the quality/speed of the M.2 SATA drives - the Asus Provided 128GB SSD M.2 SATA drives aren't bad - but aren't the fastest. Using the Intel RAPID Storage Technology RAID0 helps for tuning write performance, and managing the RAID0 settings.

crystaldiskmark 256GB RAID0 high performance power plan and xtu enabled #5.JPG

So far the G750JY looks like it doesn't offer a model with the RAID0 that the JH/JZ had available, but it still has 2 SATA III ports - if the MB stays the same as the previous G750, then you could RAID0 that and get over 1000MB/sec. And, still have the Optical port - which seems faster than SATA I, but Slower than full SATA II.

Or, use external storage through the Thunderbolt port, on both the G750 and G751.

If the M.2 PCIE x4 parts coming up for release do run at 1.6GB/sec that would be awesome, but putting in an M.2 drive precludes using the SATA III port in the same Bay. Perhaps someone can make/source an M.2 PCIE x4 cable to run the M.2 PCIE port over to the Right Bay - routing a SATA III jumper won't work - there isn't enough room for the SATA II connector, 2.5" drive and the SATA III extension, so only the M.2 PCIE is routeable to the other bay.

IDK why Asus put a SATA II port in a high-end laptop, it really messes up the options for fast internal storage :)

Optimus in the G750JY, non-switchable - would kill the G750JY for me...

mnwforever, the G751 may not be able to get a 8GB VRAM module, at least not right away, as the GPU and memory are soldered in to the G751 Motherboard, and it looks like there isn't enough room for more VRAM.

Here is a G751JY motherboard with 980m + 4GB VRAM. It's been posted before, but I know it's a pain to search through the long thread to find things.

    View attachment 118751

Of course it is possible to layout another board, but that is a longer process than swapping in another MXM card.

There is no refresh as far as I was aware, the G751 is the replacement to the G750. - Meeker (reply with quote failed...)

Asus hasn't said anything about one canceling the other, I think it is a conclusion jumped to, rather than an actual fact.

Without going on about the merits of both, they do have different benefits, even though they are close in character. Much like the G771 is a subset of the G751, the G750 is another offering that compliments the others

MSI has a zillion options and levels and models, I think Asus could benefit from some expansion in models, and when they are all equally mature and stable, there will be a market for each style.

Unless you have a link stating the G751 is going to replace the G750, it is not yet a fact.

zawszecos, both the GPU and CPU can run up to 100c before throttling, perhaps higher on the GPU - they have run hotter in the past - but given the combined cooling plate connecting the GPU/CPU heat pipes - both sharing the load under asymmetric loads (more GPU than CPU, and the reverse), it is a clever design that rides the 100%/100% CPU/GPU load perfectly at 72F/21C ambient.

    Your temps are ok :)

You are right about no Optimus being good, especially for that kind of work.

The price isn't that good, it is about the same as the G750 but doesn't have the same internals - I think the G751 price should go down a bit.

IPS screen / TN screen - I like both, a gaming laptop should have a high refresh and ability to do G-Sync, Optimus doesn't do G-sync or high refresh - that is probably the most obvious reason going forward to dump Optimus. High refresh IPS panels are coming now in large monitor sizes, hopefully 17"/18" panels for laptops are on the way.

As soon as the G751 sound problem is fixed, the G751 is a keeper, but not until then.

If I had a G751, and it was coming to the end of the acceptance/return period from the seller, and my communication to Asus for a fix / commitment to fix the problem wasn't forthcoming, I would return the G751 and hold on to my cash and wait for the fix to materialize.

was refering to the price i got it for in Poland (after a week the prices went higher) which is about 2040 usd / 1640 euro for i7-4860/980m/16gb ram/256ssd sata3 + 1TB hdd /bluray/win 8.1 config

hmscott, that is very reasonable, I have time till the thursday for the return - hope a fix (or at least an announcement of it) will come in time

Can anyone tell me the specific realtek audio chipset / audio controller that is installed in the G751?
Is it the ALC892 or another one?

    thanks in advance

I've been trying to decide between the G751 or wait for Sager NP8652.

I found a G751 in canada with free shipping to me, but the model number ASUS G751JY-QH72-CB is different. I can't find it many other places and i'm scared something will be off.

Has anyone seen or gotten the model number ASUS G751JY-QH72-CB?

I called ASUS but they weren't much help, said it has a removable battery?

    Thanks for the help

dann006, that model is listed on amazon US site as well...how does the price compare?
    http://www.amazon.com/G751JY-QH72-CB-17-3-inch-i7-4710HQ-24GB-DDR3-GTX980M-4G/dp/B00Q9BVVE8

    And, on amazon.ca
    http://www.amazon.ca/G751JY-QH72-CB...418687051&sr=8-1&keywords=ASUS+G751JY-QH72-CB

The configuration looks good, but it doesn't have an SSD...only the 1TB HDD, and I assume you want the Bilingual Keyboard.

This configuration has added a PCIE SSD 256GB for a few bucks less :)
    http://www.amazon.com/G751JY-DH71-1...198&sr=1-1&keywords=g750jy&pebp=1418687198129

amazon.ca - wow! tooo much! look around on Canadian sites for a better price, wow.
    http://www.amazon.ca/G751JY-DH71-I7...F8&qid=1418687304&sr=8-1&keywords=G751JY-DH71

Also Amazon has an extended return period for Xmas, sometime in Jan... don't remember when but it is like a month to return... maybe less now.

Please let us know what you end up getting :)

My main point in the 4 lane PICE m.2 slot is that raid isn't really necessary or prefered in my opinion. You get all the speed of SATA RAID with none of the negatives.

I currently have the 256GB part and just pulled 938.9MB/s read and 792.7 write on the sequential test (via Crystal).

I forgot about considering Optimus as well, for me the lack of Optimus is a feature, again something subjective.

Thanks for the help. I was actually not sure what the Bilingual Keyboard was but I do not need it. Ha looks like plenty of people complain about it. I'm actually in the US I just found some great USD pricing from canada on one. Around $200 off but I wouldn't be able to do the keyboard.
Looks like i'm still looking at where to buy.

JoshInDaPhils, that is better speed than posted by others, and I have recently seen an even better speed posted here:

Got your new G751JY G751JT G751JM ? Post your review, temps, benchmark results! - Page 5

I asked what the make / model was of their M.2 PCIE part, and would like to know the same of yours, Crystaldiskinfo or another inventory tool like hwinfo can be used to find out the details.

There isn't anything wrong with RAID0, as long as you keep backups, and I haven't lost a RAID0 in a very long time, but I still back up.

When the chipset supports more PCIE lanes, we can look forward to RAID0 PCIE M.2 arrays too.

    Model : SAMSUNG MZHPU256HCGL-00004
    Firmware : UXM6501Q

Same as others I would believe, perhaps firmware plays a factor... I do disable swap entirely, I would imagine that most don't and this is impacting the benchmarks for some.

Actually for some applications (like Photoshop) you need to have some swap. I would thus not fully disable it, maybe make it way smaller though.

pato, if you need a pagefile, like for Photoshop then you need a large one, not a small one. Photoshop is an ancient program that has from the beginning used all the memory available - swapfile included - and does a huge amount of work making sure to swap out any portions of itself not immediately needed in order to make enough real memory available for your images/photos.

The more memory you have the less swapfile you need, until you no longer need the swapfile access. There is a point where the pagefile isn't needed, but Photoshop may still complain about it because it doesn't know what you are going to throw at it and it wants to make sure it has plenty of everything to start.

If you are trying to disable the annoying pagefile complaint dialog starting Photoshop, does it still do that?, you can make a small 128MB-200MB pagefile, I think that is the minimum size required to shut it up.

So far I haven't had need for a pagefile, I don't use Photoshop, and the one application that still needed a pagefile that I used updated and no longer needs a pagefile to function.

A pagefile of any size on a small partition C drive, as I have on the G750JH, is a directly felt loss, even after recovering all the partitions in to the C drive I only have 237GB.

Turning off pagefile and hibernation removed a fixed sized 32GB pagefile and a 32GB hiberfil.sys file, that is 64GB back on a 237GB partition, to me that is a larger and more desirable benefit than the ephemeral need for a pagefile/hibernation.

If I run into a situation where I need a pagefile then I can adapt for that temporary situation, but until then, I am running several VM's, applications, and gaming all on 32GB without a pagefile. :)

The pagefile has always been a point for discussion ever since the human race was born, and just like the universe itself we will never find a concrete answer. Some say it's not needed, some say it's essential...our species simply did not evolve to the point where we will find an answer yer xD

Anyway, the G750JY is confusing me. Are they giving up on the G751, or simply providing an option for those who don't like its design? Or is the whole "G751 can't have a 8GB GPU" true?

I want to use my G751JY mostly for video and photo editing, and occasionally play some games. I intend to do all of these in 1440p, so i'm not sure 8GB would be useful for me...

UltimaXemnas, we have evolved to have enough memory to deny pagefile, and pagefile denied is pagefile saved :)

There are times that a swap/pagefile is demonstrably needed, when that isn't the case, it is not needed. It is, or it isn't needed, there is no in between.

Running without a pagefile is the first step in determining if you need a pagefile. It is a simple exercise in controlling your Windows configuration.

There is only proof of need, and if there is no need, there is no pagefile required.

    Please don't further the FUD.

UltimaXemnas, 8GB VRAM maybe can be used for many things, but if your software doesn't support Optimus switching to use the Nvidia GPU, you won't be able to take advantage of the Nvidia GPU or VRAM.

There were a number of people doing video editing early on with the new ROG Optimus enabled G750JS/JM/JZ, and found their software wouldn't switch to the Nvidia GPU. And, all their rendering done on the CPU was Thermal Throttling the CPU due to the added heat generated by the enabled Intel GPU on the same chip carrier.

Here is a link to a post with a summary of links to check out with the complaints/results.

ASUS G750JM reaches 99C while rendering

There are many other posts, a series with people trying to use rendering software for CAD work as well, with the same result.

The G751JY with 4GB and no Optimus will be of far more use to someone with an application that won't work properly on an Optimus enabled laptop.

So, highest priority is to check with the vendors of all the software you need to run and see if it works with Optimus switching to the Nvidia GPU.

For the few games that will take advantage of 8GB VRAM, they will likely run just as nicely with 4GB VRAM. 99% of the games won't even need 8GB VRAM.

...I think it was quite clear that I was joking, and that my post was a satire of the common pagefile argument that's been going on for years xD
Great post, thanks alot hmscott ;)

8GB VRAM, from what I understand, is only useful at this point if you're going to game with multiple screens or if you want to play at 4K. Optimus is indeed a load of , it's the main reason why the G751 is so great (manufacturing issues aside). And that optimus issue users were reporting with G750's pretty much just made the decision for me, I will go for the G751 and that's final! :D

I honestly couldn't care less about 4K, at least not now considering most affordable 4K monitors are not that good. I rather go with a 1440p ASUS PB278QR, with an incredible IPS display with reasonable 5ms response time (same response time as my current TN monitor, so I shouldn't notice any difference). It's expensive yeah, but I expect it to last long. And i'm already done with 1080p workspace :p

UltimaXemnas, the PB278QR IPS monitor is awesome, but what about G-Sync on the PG278Q?

    Monitors - ROG SWIFT PG278Q - ASUS

G-sync on IPS might be coming; IPS 144hz panels arriving soon?

G-sync would be nice. Another reason to not get an Optimus laptop - Optimus doesn't support G-sync!

UltimaXemnas, it's in short supply, so the prices have gotten ridiculous... maybe wait for the next shipment and the prices to drop.

It isn't all rainbows and unicorns on the desktop side of things either...

    Hi everyone !

    I have bought a G751JT as new with i7-7410HQ, 8gb ram, gtx970m with 3gb vram, and a 1tb hybrid hdd.

I was shocked to find out that GPU was throttling after a really short time, and upon disassembling the notebook, i found that there was NO PASTE between the gpu and the heatsink. There was everywhere else just not on the gpu.
It wasn't actually noticable under gaming, as the vga is fast enough for most every game on ultra settings even with throttling, and 3dmark tests don't take long enough for throttling to really show in the scores, it did however get hot under load, again something that isn't really noticable as at 72°c it starts to downclock the gpu as much as it needs to not exceed 72c so you wont see excessive temps even without the paste. (at least with the the 202 bios)

I could only see the GPU clocks going from 1038mhz gradually down to 500mhz when checking hwinfo64 while gaming, or msi kombustor (which would throttle it anyway but not by this much normally)

So ...i guess this is an isolated case, but anyway.

Also don't be alarmed if your 3dmark11 or 3dmark2013 general scores (not the graphics) are off if you like me got a notebook with 1x8gb ram, as then it is only working in single channel mode, which affects physics and combined scores.
I guess this would affect most cpu intensive tasks you might want to do.

I have fiddled some with Intel XTU, as with normal VCORE and default multipliers the cpu would throttle to 2700mhz on four cores with prime 95, and would do Cinebench R15 CPU Multi 64Bit with 3200mhz on four cores with a score of 637.
I have changed multipliers from 35/34/33/33 to 37/36/35/35, adaptive vcore to -80mv, turbo boost short and turbo boost normal threshold from 47/58w to 50/60w and boost window to 99999999seconds.
Now the cpu actually holds 3200mhz under prime95, and does Cinebench R15 CPU Multi 64Bit with 3500mhz on four cores with a score of 700, while actually being cooler due to the -80mv lower adaptive vcore.
I find this impressive as the scores i get are higher than i7-4910MQ, and some i7 4930MX i found over the web in clevos, which don't hold max boost because of inadequate cooling i guess.

I am otherwise really content with the machine.
Since repasting with Arcti MX-2 and lowering cpu vcore, the idle temperatures for both the CPU and GPU are 37-40°c
While playing Far cry 4 for an hour with OC it takes temps to 78°c on the CPU and 69°c on the GPU, so both keeps maximum turbo clocks of 3500mhz CPU, and 1172mhz GPU.

    I have two questions though:

1.: Could anyone overclock the CPU reference clock in XTU to any amount worth mentioning?
I could oc from 100->102,5mhz , over that would BSOD.
Could anyone reach higher? What could be the bottleneck? Higher vcore, disabling vr efficiency and vr faults seem to help only marginally. (101,5->102,5mhz)
I had an Msi gx660 with an i5-460m that could be OC'd with Setfsb from 2600->3900mhz stable, after loosening system memory timings, as the bottleneck was the memory not being able to take much higher than default clocks on default timing, as raising bclk would raise ddr3 memory clocks too.

2.: My stable VGA OC is +135 GPU and +160mem, which got me 8300 points in firestrike graphics....about 10% off the stock gtx980m.
Did anyone flash the vbios to either raise the gpu clock ceiling or to loosen memory timings to enable a higher memory oc?
Or is there an alternative to bios flashing if i want to unlock the max gpu clocks?

Hell I'm not surprised with your case.. Asus's stock paste is junk and usually they screw it up when applying it.. I remember when I got my G73JH and was reading through these forums so many people complained about overheating etc however unlike the older G series notebooks which had crap cooling systems, each case here was because of the damm thermal paste.. I bought mine from gentech and had them replace the paste IC Diamond...

    1. 3.5GHz is the max turbo it can hold... I don't think you can OC the CPU unless you OC memory which is not possible with i7-4710HQ...
    2. Unlocked vBIOS not available yet so you have to wait..

I was wondering if the framerate from the benchmarks this guy did were rather low. Isn't this laptop supposed to dominate every 1080p game easily?

Those were not games, they are benchmarks designed to stress multi GPU setups.

From what I read those were like any demanding 1080p game at ultra settings, that's why I called them "games".

So are the framerates normal/good/awesome/Dark Souls?

Games should be faster than those benchmarks, as times go on you will have to lower the details in the most demanding aspects a little (shadows etc) that actually have a small impact on image quality but that's always the case with single GPU notebooks (and desktops).

Is it normal that the CPU cores run to 80 celcius while on load? ( gaming ). I think the GPU runs fine as it never gets above 65 but I am not sure about the processor :/

    Hey everyone,
writing as a proud owner of g751, got the i7 4710, 16gb, gf970m and hybrid disk version, didnt wanted to spend more, cause i think its more than enaugh for an upgrade from 5 years old asus k50 with ati hd4570 lol.
My only concers were the issues posted here, mostly win 8, but everything is in mint condition, win 8 is awesome tbh, really diggin it, very user friendly. I bought this machine mostly for total war games and i am playing shogun 2 right now with everything maxed on ultra absolutly smootly(including ssao), its georgous, also witcher 2 everything on ultra, my eyeballs fallen off , the displey is very nice, like veery nice and diablo 3 i ued to play on the mot min settings on my previous pc(the asus k50 i mentioned before), now its a whole another ball game, looks fantastick and more smooth than ever, absolutly speedy runs. I am very pleased with the buy and the wifi works even better like on my last notebooks, which was none isusses whatsoever.

Yes going from the equivalent of 20-25 nvidia shaders to 1280 and 64bit DDR2 to 256bit GDDR5 at a higher clock will do that :)

how is turbo boost power time windows works?
it is better with high values like 96sec or 1000sec? or is better to be lower value?

d0r1n, if you check in XTU, "Turbo boost Power Time Window" is a non-adjustable setting:

intel xtu turbo boost time window non-setable.JPG

I have a 4700HQ, if your CPU is adjustable, please let us know the model, and default setting, mine is 28 seconds.

The Window is held only as long as other parameters are met, like Power / Wattage and Temperature limits. Setting it longer may not be sustainable, even the 28 seconds may not hold.

For the mobile part, don't worry about it, you are limited by the power dissipation and temperature, even with the excellent Asus cooling system.

I think im going to buy a G751JY and i would like to know if is possible turn off the discrete graphics card and use the integrated graphics to save battery? Like the GT72 does.
Im seeing a lot of problems with the G751, do you think its worthy to take the risk??

d0r1n, I am surprised the 4710HQ allows changing that setting. The G751's also use the 4860HQ, so always include the CPU model when asking about CPU settings.

My answer stays the same, leave it at default as changing it isn't going to do anything helpful. It doesn't even on desktop systems that have more headroom than the mobile CPU's.

If you made changes, and only can see the range now, the default of 28 seconds for the 4700HQ would make sense.

If you go to the Profiles section of XTU you can select "Default" and click "Show Values" you can see the Defaults for all the changed values you made. What does it show?

Most people double it to start, and make other changes at the same time that will help, separating that change alone shows no improvement.
