That exact model number is M.2 only, the PCI-E version is called something else.

    Here's the one I bought.
    http://m.ebay.com/itm/121481220983

Getting to the card involves removing basically all the screws from the bottom of the laptop, then popping off the rear cover and ultimately the keyboard.

Wow, there are only 2 items listed with that part number on eBay, and one is plugged into a PCIE expansion card for a desktop. The Amazon hits I got were mislabeled, google turns up no hits at all. That is one rare card :)

    Thanks Apoxxx!

I'm having wifi issues with this machine. It connects to my router at 300mbps but my internet speed is very low about 40mbps on download with speediest. My iPad on the same 5ghz connection gets the full 162mbps.

Is there a fix for this does anybody know or is it just the crappy Intel WiFi card ?

    Cheers

You can try updating the Intel WiFi driver, but 40mbps sounds a bit low.
Check this post below and see if you will need to enable this setting in your router "Enable WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia) settings".
Intel 7260AC terrible wireless speeds... anyone else having problems?

    Hi thanks for the reply.

I cannot find anything about WMM settings on my Virgin Suoerhub 2 so I'm not sure it has that tbh. I'm thinking the WiFi card used in this machine is just pants tbh. Even my wife's cheap £250 machine can get the full speed. Along with the speaker issues I'm loosing interest in the laptop pretty quick now and I think it's going to go back.

I will have a look at the thread you posted before I give up and see if anything helps..

    Cheers

Sounds like you are the victim of that wonderful card like many others and I can tell you from experience that new drivers do close to nothing.

    hi to all concerned,
Just registered to say that i just recieved (in Estonia) G751JT with Qualcomm Atheros AR956x Wireless Network Adapter. At first it didnt connect to my rooter but after updates everything works.
Hope i dont jinx it but i was afraid for no reason. And speakers work very good with winamp, with media player music was not so good. I'm really happy with this pc.

Can anyone confirm if the G751JY is silent while idle?

I have tested two of these machines and on both, the fans were clearly audible while idle (CPU utilization 1-3% and temps 42-46C). I even tried undervolting using Intel XTU to maximum -75mV but no dice :(.

CajunAzn, if you verified that the idle fan speed is 2300, that is as quiet as it gets. I use AIDA64 to check fan speed.

aida64 fan speed in sesors section.JPG

My G750JH is inaudible at idle, but I have other fans running in my room, so if you are in a completely quiet room, it might be audible.

Some people are more sensitive to sounds than others, as some G750 owners complained about the same audible at idle fan noise.

The G751JY does not have Optimus so the 980M is always used which means the GPU fan is constantly spinning. It's noticeable at idle, Not loud but you can hear fan noise.

Thanks for the quick reply guys!

Alright, fired up AIDA64 and it shows the exact same 2300rpm/100% fan speed as yours. Although I'm not 100% sure of that reading: audibly, I've heard the fan go from a soft whirr, to a more audible higher-pitched tone all while reading 2300rpm. The whirr I don't mind so much, but the whine is just past my threshold for tolerable and idle.

I guess I have two options now:

    1) Since you reported good noise levels with the G750JH, I could try the G751JT (970M) and hope that the lower temps cause the GPU fan to stay silent.

    2) Wait for the G750JY (980M/8GB) to come out in Canada, and hope it's better heat sink and Optimus will keep the fans low enough at idle to be silent.

    What do you recommend?

CajunAzn, it's likely the similar tuning of the fans / exhaust ports on the JT/JY will make the idle sound the same for either version. The GPU fan doesn't usually turn on at all until you run a game using the GPU more intensely, so both fans there will likely idle with the same sound on both the JY/JT.

The G750 has a different sized exhaust/fan tuning, so at the same idle the sound characteristics might be different, you would need to decide if it is more or less pleasing to you.

Optimus tends to raise the CPU idle/load temperatures by about 10c, so you are more likely to hear the CPU fan spin up and down at idle than on a non-Optimus laptop. Between the JW/JX/JH and the JM/J S/JZ when Asus added Optimus there were a lot more complaints about the idle fan oscillating up and down on the slightest load.

There were some people mentioning that the G751JT/JY GPU fan had a whistling sound... is that noise characteristic that is bothering you?, more so than the idle fan noise?

If you were hearing variable noise from the fan, while watching it stay idle at 2300rpm, it might have been the GPU fan you heard spinning up... it should also stay quiet at idle.

Other G751 owners have reported seeing the fan speed reading in AIDA64 change as the fan speed changes - make sure yours does the same - run the AIDA64 CPU stress test and watch the fan speed in the AIDA64 Cooling Fans tab, like this:

    aida64 stress test.JPG

For me the choice would be to keep the G751JY, since I prefer to stay away from the complications imposed by Optimus.

Optimus uses only the Intel GPU for video output, so you lose all of the Nvidia GPU video tuning in the control panel, you are limited to 60hz output which breaks G-sync functionality, and the added heat from the Intel GPU enabled on the same carrier as the CPU is undesirable.

And, don't forget that Optimus gets in the way of Windows/IE/MediaPlayer/Flash from using the Nvidia GPU. Many applications only run on the Intel GPU and won't move GPU use to the Nvidia GPU. Rendering programs that won't switch lose all the performance benefits of the Nvidia GPU you paid so much extra to get.

The 980m on the G750JY has 8GB, but for 99% of games you won't be able to use that extra 4GB, and for the games that can use 8GB - they look just fine on 4GB too.

Please come back and let us know what you work out :)

Actually, looking back at your screenshot, I noticed your GPU read 0% not 100% which is what mine is reading . This leaves me to believe the whine is caused by the GPU fan as you said. It's really weird since my GPU is reporting very low 38C temps, and all I am using is IE.

    Capture.PNG

The noise characteristic is not really as high pitched as a whistle, just a constant higher-pitched blowing that I suspect probably only registers at 34-35dB but just sounds a lot more annoying than that.

You make a really good point about the complications with Optimus...sigh. From your advice, I'll give my second unit more shot. However, due to my store's short 7-day return policy, I have only 1 more day to test this baby out.

The first unit I need to return anyways since it has the dreaded failing left side USB port issue.

Have done any other tweaks to your G751JY for better temps?

MOOGLEYS, on an Optimus laptop using the Intel GPU Optimus adds heat to the CPU so the CPU fan spins up and down more often at idle too.

G750JM/J S/JZ users complained of that quite often.

Either way GPU usage is going to add heat and cause the associated fan to spin up.

CajunAzn, all the G751's have the same USB controller, so the same USB problems exist.

Here is the link to my post about the Western Digital solution for disconnects, there is a compatibility issue between WD Advanced Power Management and some USB 3.0 controller chipsets.

G751 - Problem with USB3.0 ports (left side) and external HD... anyone else? - Page 6

As I said, the CPU fan idle at 2300rpm is as low as the fan is going to go, but you can stop some of the spin up with the CPU fan by running the Balanced Power plan CPU Min/Max 0%/99% instead of the High Performance Power plan with CPU Min/Max 100%/100%.

Allowing the CPU clock to drop between loads allows the CPU to cool off - keeping the CPU clock speed up high all the time builds up heat over time and causes more fan noise.

The GPU also downclocks, but you need to keep the default Nvidia settings for 3D settings, if you bump up the settings to high performance then the GPU won't downclock - here are the settings of interest:

    manage 3d settings.JPG

Those settings give the best performance, but tend to keep the GPU running hotter as well.

The AIDA64 program shows the CPU/GPU fan speeds, but for monitoring CPU temps I use hwinfo64 and for monitoring the GPU temps I use GPU-Z, as both allow logging - so I can see the temps between peaks.

    hwinfo64 sensors view.JPG

hwinfo64 sensors view after resizing and scrolling.JPG

    gpu-z cuda msi oc run.JPG

As a last hint, I use flashblock to stop all the flash animations from running while browsing to reduce CPU/GPU usage.

flash blocking is available for IE, Firefox (what I mostly use), and Chrome:

Use Internet Explorer's Built-in "Flash Block" Feature

    Chrome flash control
    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/flashcontrol/mfidmkgnfgnkihnjeklbekckimkipmoe?hl=en

I also use noScript and QuickJAVA to enable/disable features loaded from websites, to reduce load and to protect against infections.

Thanks for link, unfortunately my problem is with a PNY USB 3.0 flash drive randomly disconnecting when plugged on the left side. My second unit doesn't have that issue (as far as I can tell—fingers crossed!). I'll do a test with my WD HDDs later and see if your fix resolves any issues.

I'll try tweaking the power profile to see if I can get lower average CPU clock, as you suggested. But maybe I should just use Intel XTU to lower max clock multiplier when I'm not gaming?

I'm interested i your GPU settings but I the link to your attachment seems broken.

Hmm, if you really like your G750JH so much, I might just return the G751JY and get that instead :p Which model do you have? Any upgrades?

CajunAzn, the PNY USB 3.0 disconnect problem doesn't happen on your 2nd unit? That's interesting. So far all the disconnect issues on those ports have been on all tested G751's... people have swapped 2 and 3 units and had the same result.

Using XTU to add a negative voltage offset is another good method to reduce temps.

Reducing laptop performance by reducing the Multipliers seems a bit extreme just to reduce fan noise.

If the fan noise is bothering you that much, use headphones, or keep something else on in the room to distract from the laptop noise; your room is too quiet.

I also use an external keyboard / mouse so I don't sit right on top of the laptop, so that reduces the noise I hear from it as well.

Another thing you can try is to use noise dampening materials under the laptop and behind it. If you have very reflective surfaces on your desk or items behind the laptop you are getting fan noise reflected up and toward you.

I fixed the link to the image, refresh the page to reload the post.

The G750JH-DB71 is still for sale new:

I have checked on Canadian websites and they dont seem to have global warranty. In terms of the US models well when I went on XoticPC and another one which I dont know at the moment it did not state a global warranty. However that may have changed now.
Also someone posted a few pages back that resellers like XoticPC stopped with the option of global warranties.
Could you help with the following questions as I dont think anyone has replied to what I have asked thanks.
In terms of the wireless card in the laptops I have read mostly bad things about it. But can you or anyone tell me what speed you get with this card where they have over a 100mb connection? What card is the best to replace the intel one?
Also I have read comments over past the few pages and it seems people prefer g750 over g751. Why is that exactly? Is the the former better overall?

mnwforever, the G751 has issues with the Realtek sound driver, Nvidia 9xx video driver, USB disconnects with ports on left side, IPS glow, red light and paint accents, and general new production line cosmetic defects.

It isn't that the G750JH is better than the G751JY/JT, as the 970m/980m are faster GPU's than the 780m, it is that I already have the G750JH and it runs great - and all the driver issues have long been resolved.

The G750JZ has the 880m, but when I OC the 780m in the G750JH the GPU performance is the same.

    The G750JH (780m 4GB) and G751JY (980m 4GB) don't have Optimus, and the G750JZ (880m 8GB) and newly announced G750JY (980m 8GB) have Optimus.

I might still get a G751, but for now I will wait until the teething issues with the new G751 laptop line get worked out :)

So far I've tried doing a 30GB transfer off the PNY on the second unit and there was no issue. I also tried a 200GB transfer off a Seagate HDD. It had a hiccup at 94% of the transfer, but I think that was because I was shuffling the cables right before.

I'm trying to put some noise dampening foam around the vents (while trying to keep airflow of course). It helps a little bit, but still audible. Temps went up maybe 2C. I'm going to try a more elaborate setup, where I try to reflect the noise away from my desk and see how that goes.

Thanks for the tips and the link, going to definitely try those settings out.

Overall, I'm still debating whether to wait for the G750JY though. It's still not 100% confirmed it has Optimus right? And maybe ASUS will have learned from the previous G750JH and put a bios option to disable Optimus or something...

CajunAzn, the G750JY Optimus was confirmed by a couple of sources inside Asus, but what isn't confirmed is if Asus added some way to disable Optimus in the BIOS or by switch.

The cooling system in the G751 isn't as robust as in the G750, it is a combined system that under 100% load from the CPU/GPU (prime95 + furmark) causes brief Thermal Throttling on and off for the CPU.

We just discovered this in testing here:

Cpu or Fan problem ??? - Page 4

Read the posts just before from two different runs on 2 different G751's. Compare to the run on the G750JH.

The cooling system in the G750JY is likely similar to the G750JH/JZ.

I don't think this rules out the G751, the simulated load is likely only going to be seen by people doing batch runs of rendering jobs.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I did Prime95(blend)+FurMark test after about 25min, one CPU core hit 95C. It seems the throttling starts at 93C in the 205 bios. The lowest clock multiplier I got was x21, so the throttling wasn't too bad.

I also noticed a difference in fan noise at the max CPU+GPU load between my two units: the first unit was louder, but hit 93C/84C CPU/GPU max; the second unit was quieter, but hit 95C/86C CPU/GPU max temps.

If the G750JY can do better, it would be a significant reason to hold out. Especially for me, if the idle noise can be eliminated with the larger heatsink.

Zaza164, it looks like the 8GB is a single SODIMM, installed under the keyboard, making the 2nd under the keyboard SODIMM slot empty - you would be better off getting the 16GB, leaving the 2 user accessible SODIM slots free.

G751 - DIY upgrade from 8 GB RAM to 32 possible?

    Some other useful links:

1.35V memory required in G751/G771/G551s (same as G750)

    Upgraders: 1.35V memory is required!!

The easiest upgrade is to get the same make/model of 8GB SODIMM from ebay - Macintosh Laptop pulls - that's where I got the 4th 8GB SODIMM for my G750JH.

You can find the make/model with CPU-Z, click on the SPD tab for the details.

Wishmaker77, I have seen a JY post 82c for running prime95 blend test, running alone without furmark, but a JT/JY can't do the combined test and get a CPU temp of 82c. At least we haven't seen it so far.

Heating up the CPU and GPU causes the JT/JY to run out of of cooling headroom, and that is why it is throttling the CPU on yours and others tests.

Your results are normal... until we get someone with a test run of the same tests and duration as you have run that does better :)

There are several test options in prime95, if you ran Small FFT that is the hottest running test, if someone else ran another test, it will read lower in temperature.

    prime95 small fft selection.JPG

prime95 Small FFT + furmark 15 minute burn-in tests simultaneously.

    My G750JH did CPU 85c, GPU 85c.

If you have a JT/JY please run the test and post your results, so Wishmaker77 and others can compare, and hopefully avoid return/RMA.

prime95 Small FFT + furmark 15 minute burn-in together, looks like this:

    p95v285.win64 + furmark 1.15.0.0 + GPU-Z + hwinfo64 + Asus Tweak 5 minutes sample taken while r.JPG

If you run prime95 Small FFT alone, the CPU temp will be lower, like this on the G750JH:

    prime95+hwinfo64.JPG

Without the GPU heat load of furmark also running at the same time the CPU will run cooler.

Wishmaker77, please give the single prime95 Blend and FFT tests alone a run and post the results.

Update: So we have 3 JY's that don't Thermal Throttle with this test, and 3 that do. But, they ones that do don't Thermal Throttle in games / apps (so far).

So I ended up returning both units and am now without a gaming machine. ::tear

We had some good times dear G751JY...

Actually, it wasn't even the throttling at max load that bothered me so much (as you'll probably never hit that in practice), just the fan noise at idle. Maybe my ears are just too sensitive?

Other than the refreshed G750JY, does anyone else have any recommendations for gaming laptops that might be silent while idle?

CajunAzn, so both of your JY's Thermal Throttled under CPU/GPU 100% loads? One worse than the other, or about the same? Which CPU did they have, the 4710HQ or the 4680HQ?

The G751 is likely the quietest next to the G750JH/JZ/JY, anything with that much heat generation is going to have fans running.

Too bad the baffles didn't work. I was going to suggest acoustic isolation feet, like used on audio equipment to disconnect the chassis from the stand.

Maybe you should get a GT72 980m, so you have another data point for comparison?

For the first unit, I can't remember exactly if there was throttling as I just recorded the max temp. However, since the CPU hit 93C, I assume it was right at the threshold of throttling, if not dipping in slightly. Both had the 4710HQ, as the 4680HQ model is not available in Canada.

Actually the G751's fan noise under load was excellent! Much quieter than other gaming laptops in my experience. It was just that while idle, the fans were subjectively as loud as most ultraportable laptops get while under moderate load. Perhaps I have been spoiled by newer thin-and-light laptops, but I just have an expectation that all laptops should be inaudible while idle.

The problem with muffling the fans is that the fan noise is frequency, not sound pressure, based. Even when I completely covered the vents, any small opening will allow the sound to penetrate. Also it could also be my ears are more sensitive to higher pitched tones in a quiet environment.

From what I've read, the GT72 is noticeably louder than the G751, at least under load. Although, I haven't read anything specifically stating the tone characteristic of the machine while idle.

Seeing as how your G750JH is inaudible at idle, that gives me hope that the refreshed G750JY will also be able to achieve the same result, since they share the same chassis and the 980M has a lower TDP. True there is Optimus, but I think there is a good chance that there will be some way (bios/registry hack/nvidia switch actually working lol) to disable Optimus, so I decided to wait. Painful though, as I won't be able to game over Christmas :(

People said the Alienware 18 was silent at idle. Maybe I should wait for a refresh of that?

CajunAzn, it's too bad the G750JY isn't out everywhere yet. Optimus was less vexing on the JZ CPU, the CPU heatsink/fan is much larger than the JM / J S, I am hoping the JY will be the same.

You could pick up an inexpensive used JW/JX/JH to game on until something gels into stable existence...you have already paid dues going through the JY teething pains.

It's tough to go cold turkey :)

I really wish ASUS was faster at releasing its products. But I guess global logistics is pretty complicated...

Haha, "I wish" I could find an inexpensive G750JH. All the people selling them want ~$1800, lol. Honestly though, I almost never buy used...something about having a virgin, new machine just really adds to the experience you know? ;)

I hope (finger crossed) Asus doesn't take longer than February to release the G750JY in Canada, or else Broadwell will be on the horizon and then I'll be screwed!

d0r1n, if you know of a dealer that has them in display, or a person that bought a G750JY, can you please check with them to find out if Optimus can be disabled with a switch or a BIOS setting - that wasn't the case for the G750JM/J S/JZ's but I am hoping Asus has made Optimus switchable in the new G750JY.

We probably need another thread for the G750JY talk :)

CajunAzn, it looks like all the G751's are doing Thermal Throttling at maximum load on CPU/GPU ( prime95 + furmark ), somewhere above 21c ambient conditions.

Some test runs are barely under Thermal Throttling, and some are just over the Thermal Throttling point in their tests, and it looks like ambient temperature / local conditions are a determining factor. At low ambient it is less likely to Thermal Throttle.

Also, not sure if hwinfo is including TDP Power Limit Throttling in it's Thermal Throttling reading - hwinfo doesn't have a separate TDP Power Limit reading.

This is the long thread in which we have been hashing it out, currently last page top of page is here:

    Very interesting.

A couple of notes: my tests were P95(blend) instead of FFT so I might have actually been able to hit higher CPU temps. Also remember, I noticed a fan noise difference, where my first machine audibly ran the fans louder, producing 2C lower temps. I wonder if the ambient temperature determines if the fans will kick into max mode...

My room is probably 21-22C in temperature, and the testing conditions were on a table with about a 30cm clearance to the wall and a bookshelf. That could have brought the ambient temp up maybe 2 degrees.

We need a friggen lab to run these tests!

You know hmscott, I am reconsidering your suggestion to get the GT72. Sure it might be about $500 more for about the same specs as the G751JY, but it possible that with some tweaking I can get good idle fan noise...plus, going one day without my gaming laptop was tough! :p

Oh yeah, and sorry I didn't get to test out the USB fix you linked to on my first unit. But at least you can record the my second unit did not experience dropouts while using a USB 3.0 PNY flash and Seagate HDD on the left side.

    Hello,

I've just bought a ROG G751JY-T7067H, but after 2 weeks, I broke the screen...
I need to buy another one, the reference is LG LP173WF4-SPD1, but I found only LP173WF4-SPF1, is it the same screen ?
Have you got a specific URL where I can find a LP173WF4-SPD1 ?

    Thank you :)

CajunAzn, with the default max TDP set on the CPU, it's possible the FFT/Blend tests would do the same, something to test next time as well :)

The GT72 would be nice to have for a while for testing / use, and it might even turn out to be a keeper.

The MSI I had was quiet at idle, but for gaming/benchmarking it was very noisy when kicking on the Turbo Fan with the manual switch. And, it was an early Haswell that didn't have the BIOS settings for enabling VM features, so I couldn't keep it. It did feel weird not having an ROG laptop as well... glad I ended up with the JW/JX/JH in the long run.

Here is an internals looks at the GT72 via the MSI how to upgrade video for swapping in a new 980m card from an 870m.

MSI GT72 Dominator (Pro) GTX 900M series MXM graphics upgrade
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZZ5hGDZpI8

It doesn't make a lot sense to do the upgrade path, it voids the warranty if you muck it up, and it costs more than selling the old laptop and buying a new one :)

It's interesting that you had a good laptop with USB on the left side working, the second time. It shows that the problem is hardware related. I think it might be a faulty built connecting cable that doesn't have a good ground from the board. That left side USB adapter board is connected with a USB cable, see photo posted earlier in thread, here it is again - shown flipped over left to right.

    7X5hrEW.jpg

Please let us know what you end up getting. It would be interesting to see an ROG owner review an MSI :)

Fabian95, in some regions Asus has an accidental damage warranty, and will replace broken screens free. Even if Asus charges to replace it, it it will likely be cheaper than having it done by yourself or an unauthorized shop, voiding your warranty.

Also, I haven't seen that scree available individually yet.

Check with Asus via a Technical Inquiry form here:

https://vip.asus.com <== create a login, register your laptop, and file a Technical Inquiry with the clear details of the problem / request.

Good luck, and let us know how Asus treats you :)

zawszecos, the first test looks good, about the same as the others we have seen, with the package temp right at 92c, right below the Thermal Throttling point of 93c. rmuniak updated with a Thermal Throttling run after having done runs without.

    http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?54521-Cpu-or-Fan-problem&p=457188&viewfull=1#post457188

The 2nd test looks like it only had 6 worker threads complete for prime95 - did you notice that, or start with only 6 worker threads? Or are they just not visible in the window? prime95 stops worker threads that have a compute error, it's always good to check the threads to see they all were running without interruption.

It would be nice to see the same 8 worker test for blend to see if the temps are lower compared to the 8 worker thread blend, perhaps you can do another run?

If that was a full 8 worker run, that is a big temperature difference, expected as Blend isn't as intensive as Small FFT.

That picture by the way shows why Asus went with 4GB, they only have pads for 8 chips so you can't get higher density chips at the moment
(you get 16 on a standard MXM board).

i can confirm it was 8 workers test and no compute errors occured, just disarrenged windows ^^', my mistake.

Aren't the temps too high on the GPU?! Looks like cooling and pasting is fine on CPU but with GPU it's like cooling via CPU's cooler more then it's own pipes??

    Bez tytu?u.jpg
    P - prime95 (s - small FFT; b - blend); F- furmark

this cooling system is alright when only CPU or GPU is stressed at one time, but it is a weak spot when these are stressed simultaniously (games mostly)
wonder what will the temps be in the summer...

In my point of view this laptop has major adventages:
+ no optimus is a plus for raytracing on CPU, so there is extra cache at disposal and no extra heat from igp
+ great config for small price
+ IPS screen (though entry level still better then most TNs in laptops)
My 2nd unit (after first with dead screen) is flawless so far - except subwoofer playing same sounds as right and left channel (seen a thread about this already - waiting for software update)

Dude, your temps were way better than mine (with the 4710HQ). I was getting 93-95C on Furmark + P95 blend. Considering you have 4C difference between the two P95 modes, I don't even want to think what it would have hit if I was using small FFT . Maybe it's worth it to get the DH72X version after all.

Nvidia says their GPUs can operate above 100C, so even though your GPU temps are about 2C higher than mine, that's an excellent trade, since you avoid CPU throttling.

Hmm, the buy button on the GT72 is calling me... :D

How long should I wait for the G750JY to come to Canada? Or maybe I should just get it and run the same tests, so we can get a good comparison of temps and fan noise?

I wasnt aware Asus refreshed the G750JY with the latest GPU. Is there a reason they have 8gb 980m on this version? Also will there be any way to remove optimus?
With the refreshed G750JY coming out will it be better than the G751 overall?

There is no refresh as far as I was aware, the G751 is the replacement to the G750.
