You will just need the 2.5" SSD. But the second bay has SATA 2 speed. So it will be better to put the SSD on the first slot and the HDD on the second one.

My bad, what I meant was that if you undervolt, you get lower temps for the same performance, or even better.

Working in the automotive industry has taught me that even though a car can take 5 mg/stroke in order to keep it idling, you can use 10 mg/stroke of gas for the same purpose and effect, but with 50% waste :)

i undervolted -90mV and i got the same perfomance(760 xtu) on i7 4710hq but also more good temps: normal i had 82-85degrees and with undervolt i got 79-80

Mine doesn't seem to be stable at -90mV, I got a reset back in the days. I keep it at -50mV, seeing as the temps are under 79C at all times. This is actually quite amazing :)

Well for chips it's that balance of stability an efficiency, of course all additional voltage on top is waste but be aware the voltage required will creep up very slowly as the chip ages so leave yourself a little margin.

I tried about 6 bags/sleeves for my G751 through Amazon and most of them left me wanting for something better. Unfortunately there aren't many options for laptops this big. Keep in mind that you need a case that fits an 18.4 laptop because of the vents on the back. I did end up finding something that fits my needs. It's lightweight, has adequate padding, had plenty of storage space for other things besides power brick and laptop (big plus for my needs)

I chose this for safe keeping inside the house:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0019MDMX0/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?qid=1420661747&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70

And this bag for when I need to take it out:
Everki Lunar Laptop Bag - Briefcase, Fits up to 18.4-Inch (EKB417BK18):Amazon:Electronics

Honorable mention to these two, but they didn't have enough storage space for my other things. The advance once is fairly spacious just not enough for me. Both are adequate to carry the laptop and power brick though.

Everki Commute 18.4-Inch Laptop Sleeve with Memory Foam (EKF808S18):Amazon:Electronics

Everki Advance Laptop Bag - Briefcase, Fits up to 18.4-Inch (EKB407NCH18):Amazon:Electronics

I also tried one from Slappa but it was really heavy when empty and the laptop barely fit. I didn't like it but it does have lots of storage space if that's what you need.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004QZB1DU/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?qid=1420663278&sr=8-6&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70

I also tried a slappa sleeve but I didn't like that one too much but it was okay and everything fit well.

I also tried a Kenneth Cole bag but the padding was not good imo.

Personally all three Everki Bags were good. It just depends on the level of storage space you want.

    I hope this helps!

As for bags the evereki ones are very good (I use a titan myself), no sleeve will protect like a decent bag.

Since i'm very close to buying my very own G751JY, I might as well ask a few questions that i've beem meaning to ask here for awhile:

1 - This will be my first time experiencing an SSD. I've heard that SSD's don't need the level of management and care HDD's need (defragmentation), so I wanted to ask if there's any point to installing apps like CCleaner and Defraggler anymore? I also heard SSD's lifespan can be drastically shorter than an HDD, so my question is what should I save in the SSD and HDD? I know OS and apps go into the SSD, so should the rest of my data go into the HDD? And does the apps include games as well?

2 - Would it be wise to buy a cooling base for it? I'm a little paranoid about overheating, but since this laptop's cooling is supposedly amazing I was wondering if a cooling base would help.

3 - I plan on connecting it to an external monitor (Asus PB278QR), for better resolution. My question is if multiple monitors are too stressing for the 980M? I was wondering if having both the external monitor AND the laptop's monitor displaying at the same would help in video editing, but first I wanted to know if the GPU can handle it.

That's about it for now. I'm sure i'll have loads of other questions when I have it in my hands :p

    Thank you for your time.

    To 1:
With todays modern SSDs you don't anymore need to defragment them. You might want to defrag twice a year, but more is probably not needed (it also depends on how you use the disk). Windows built-in defrag is enough for that.
Lifespan, so far it looks like you can write the whole disk several times a day and it should last for 5+ years. So that is not anymore an issue. A backup to another disk still doesn't hurt, a fault can always happen, with every harddisk ;)
I put everything on SSD, load times and usage times is SOOOO much better.

    2:
No it would not be wise, unless you have 35+°C in you home all the time.

    3:
The GPU can handle it, but I'm not sure if the HDMI can output a higher resolution than 1920x1080 on this model, maybe somebody else, or the manual of the laptop, can help here.

I just saw on some Polish forum new pics of g751jy insides :)
It was also stated by the one doing the pictures that there was no sticker on the cooling system in his unit.
I believe it makes it at least 2 ppl with no stickers on radiators... In that case repasting should not void the warranty right?

Usually, they won't care if nothing is damaged from misuse, but if there are any trace of misuse then warranty can be void.

opening up the machine doesn't void the warranty (asus's L1 technician email who also claimed the sticker would be there - guess standard response true for most laptops) but is not advised
The seldom fact of taking the radiator of for repaste does not void it... and if done right and nth damaged in the process it is totaly O.K.
that's what the stickers usually are there for so ppl won't even try

Guys, don't for one minute think that Asus won't void the warranty should the technician see evidence of you getting inside and taking things apart.

The technician is responsible for the laptop repair, and if they find tampering they can and will void the warranty, and claim your involvement is responsible for the problems.

They can refuse to fix it at worst, and they can charge you for the repair at best.

If you have a problem, return the laptop to the seller if you can, or RMA it to Asus if you are past the return period. Asus is responsible for warranty repair, let them do it.

If your temps are bad enough to pull it apart and re-paste, then they are bad enough for Asus to do the re-pasting for you, let Asus do the work you have already paid them to do.

I opened mine to fix creaking on the sides.

All I did was unclip the keyboard panel from the frame and add black tape for spacing, then reclose it.

There may be minor scratches on the pegs on one side, but everything is still in one piece, and just as structurally sound as it came to me.

Would I be able to return it if there is no fix for my other issue?

SoulMisaki, that would be up to Asus. If there is scoring on the screws or other visible signs of opening, they can say something.

It's up to the tech to make something of it. If they ask, be honest and say what you have already said.

If they don't ask don't offer.

Unless you damaged something while in there, then I would say something up front and take responsibility for it.

That's better than trying to cover up for damage that they will clearly see was done after leaving Asus, then at least they will be in the right frame of mind to fix it for you for free, or at a reduced fee.

Well any and all screws I touched are covered by rubber stoppers, and the only screw I've (accidentally) worn is one used for the HDD bracket, which is covered regardless, and was too tight when I received it.

Other than that, the only "visible signs of opening" are slight scratch marks on a peg or two I had trouble unclipping. (Other than that, everything works just as well or better than when I received it.)

Would I still be able to return it for a refund, knowing this? (Reason for the return is the sound issue with the G751 series of laptops, which effects mine too.)

SoulMisaki, Amazon likely won't care, or notice. They might boot it up to make sure it is working, and do a cosmetic inspection to make sure there is no damage. Let us know how the return works out :)

Usually they rely on testing done by the manufacturer and don't break the factory seals (some customers panic if these are broken).

MarshallR@Asus commented on a new G751JL model release, and confirmed the G751 is here for 2015:

"G751JL with GTX 965M is due out next month, but current plan is that the G751 design will be here for most, if not all of 2015. Refreshes based on updates from Nvidia and Intel will be rolled out as they come available, pending their respective launches. Recent Intel 5th Gen CPUs were 15/28W, not the quad-core parts with PCI-Express x16 that are required for G series."

when is the new laptops going to come out?

There is a high demand and limited availability of the GPUs, so just supply and demand.

Why is it that ASUS seems to be less popular here at the forum? Because of the soldered in components and lack of CPU/GPU upgrade capability? The G751 is a crazy perfect gaming laptop otherwise. Blows my mind that there isn't as much discussion here (or even an Owner's Lounge!).

sk3tch, ALLurGroceries put out an open call to anyone interested in forming a Owners Lounge during the peak of activity here, but noone took him up on the offer.

The G750 series also doesn't have an Owners Lounge, and instead started and continued the same as this G751 announcement post/thread.

At 1885 posts in this thread, I don't think you can say there isn't much action here, but there havn't been many new posts recently, all the activity has been on the ROG forums for the G751.

There is about the level of action here I would expect, what with the vibrant activity on the G751 ROG site forum:

    G771, G751, G551 and GX550 Gaming Notebooks

Early on there is a lot of activity here, before the ROG site spins up, then for a while they are both busy, but the technical support usually ends up on the ROG site long term.

I try to not duplicate the postings between sites, but have made an effort to link back and forth so people on both forums know about the other one.

Anyone should feel free to contact ALLurGroceries and start a G751 or even a G750 Owners Lounge :)

Thanks hmscott. I sent him a PM. I've been writing up a review: http://1pcent.com/?p=433 - complete with benchmarks (3DMark, 3DMark 11, Unigine Valley, Unigine Heaven), and info on temps. Uploading some BF4 MP gameplay video right now (YouTube) - so that will be up there, as well.

One of my favorite first posts starting a new Owners forum, is the one for the Asus W90vp, started by -=$tR|k3r=- - it's a good example of a long term updated resource. Still an active thread :)

Yes many of the enthusiasts here upgrade their machines so making the parts harder to get to has dampened the enthusiasm for the tweakers. Does not mean they are not good machines though.

The new Alienware 17 also has soldered in components, and the Alienware 18 line has been canceled along with any subsequent expected user installable upgrades - like the 980m.

No more Alienware user upgradeable CPU/GPU moving forward.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-18-m18x/768765-rip-alienware-18-a-23.html#post9883886

Unless Alienware re-offers the 18 series again, that whole line is now like the Asus line, without CPU/GPU upgradeable components.

It looks like Asus is ahead of the curve again. ;)

Little update: The first bay supports the M.2 slot to be filled alongside the SATA slot. It's not difficult to fit 2 drives there at all and they work perfectly fine. The only way to do it is removing the SSD that will go into the SATA port from it's house and NOT use the mounting bracket.

My current setup is the following:

    Bay 1:
    - 256GB M.2 Sata SSD (Samsung PCI-E 4X)
    - 1TB Samsung 840 Evo (Removed from it's housing)
Both are fixed with some tape and since they aren't mechanical drives, this mounting option is perfect.

    Bay 2:
    - 2TB Samsung/seagate 5400rpm mechanical drive

    Optical Bay:
    - 2TB Samsung/seagate 5400rpm mechanical drive.

    Card slot: 256gb sdcard.

I'll be replacing the M.2 drive with a 512gb version, for total storage of around 5.5GB

Will post pics if anyone is interested.

Impressive, but what do you need all that storage for?

Pics please. Interested. Especially since my understanding is that the sata in bay 1 is the faster one than in bay 2. Thank you

deteplete3, it's all awesome, but the stand out part, perhaps the one you can focus on in a separate posting, is fitting an M.2 and a SATA III drive in Bay 1, that was what we all have been waiting for - and you got a positive result! :)

Please do include as many photo's as needed to describe the sequence to make it fit / work for others trying to get it to work for them.

When you have a posting together, one that you want to live a long time, we can make sticky post on the ROG G751 forum, so others can benefit.

Thanks for trying, and getting it to work! :)

I've been with the laptop for about 2 hours now...it is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

The ONLY issue i've faced so far is the infamous Intel Wi-Fi connection problems, when I first turned it on it wouldn't connect. Eventually it started working, like I was predicting, but I started to consider changing the Wi-Fi adapter...

Been installing all my apps, but I wanted to ask a question: is there any point to installing CCleaner? I have it in all my PC's, to clean clutter and increase performance, but will it make any difference with an SSD? And will the writes CCleaner does hurt the SSD?

UltimaXemnas, the modern SSD's can take all the writes / reads you can throw at it, for many many years. Read this usage test:

The SSD Endurance Experiment: Two freaking petabytes - The Tech Report - Page 1

cccleaner is awesome, and I run it on a regular basis. I use Firefox plugin's for cleaning up tracking cookies, blocking spyware, and blocking scripts, but there are still lots of cruft left by lots of programs that needs cleaning on a weekly basis - I weekly clean out over a gig of crap.

CCleaner also has a plugin, ccenhancer, that adds a thousand apps (or so), and adds about a minute to startup time, but it cleans out even more cruft.

    https://singularlabs.com/software/ccenhancer/

Well worth installing, updating regularly, and running weekly - or more.

    Have fun :)

Thanks for the message dude, I guess the initial stories about SSD's failing all the time kind of traumatized me for life :p

Is there any way I can know the SSD I have installed without opening the maching?
