Darn it...ASUS Hungary said that there wont be a model here (at least this year) with 7820HK, only 7700HQ...does it make a huge difference for games if I go with a locked 7700HQ ? Would that bottleneck the GTX 1080 ?

120Hz screen? 7700HQ bottleneck. 60Hz screen? No bottleneck. But I would never get such a weak CPU with a 1080 anyway, honestly. It's like buying a 1080 and pairing it with a R5 1500X which you won't OC and saying it's a great match

I deactivated my CPU's OC for my G701VIK. I do not suffer to be honest. I am much more happy with fixed 120fps and less fan noise + 65-70 degree celcius instead of OClocked 80-85 degree with a jet fan noise.

You really need to be committed to your desire to have that kind of device to spend that much money.
I still try to find the configuration with the best GPU / CPU without all the add-on's bumping up the price.
Asus sometimes never releases a lower configuration model, and sometimes they do. The Asus ROG G703VI-XH74K has 32GB memory and 512GB SSD, and is a well sized for RAM / storage, but likely not with the parts I would want to use.
With limited M.2 and RAM slots, you want to pair up 2 x 16GB and 1 x 1TB SSD or 2x 1TB SSD, although now there are 2TB M.2 SATA WD SSD's showing up, so that's an option to look for too.
I'd look for a lower priced configuration direct from Asus, or use a place like GentechPC to configure it as you like, which locks in the CPU / GPU option - sometimes you can miss out on Asus laptops due to short procduction runs and then have no follow up production runs.Last edited: Nov 15, 2017 -

There is a model available for 3199€ in Germany which has 1x256SSD. Is it possible to add the 2nd ssd and make it raid0 from bios or do I need to do some hardware stuff?

I believe this could be a really good machine however its a little late to the game of 1080 builds and already shows unavailable on the US market. Hopefully there will be a refresh when the new Nvidia GPU's are dropped.

Now I understand why we had 25% off last week for the current G703VI

The new Chimera despite using 1x GTX 1080 will use 2x 280W powerbrick instead of 1x 330W. This is true for both the 8950HK and 8750H models.
I wonder what is the reason behind this?
I hope this is because it will have higher TDP window for the GTX 1080 compared to the previous Chimera and the MSI GT75VR.hmscott likes this. -
-
Secondly, the product page on HIDEvolution, XoticPC, ExcaliberPC and ProStar retailers website state that the 2 adapters will be 280W each. All of them states 2x280W, they can't all be wrong, can they ?
Both 8750H and 8950HK cpu have 45W TDP, the same as the 7700HQ and 7820HK.
So why does this new model need 560W power compated to the previous 330W ?
I am hoping that ASUS increased the TDP of the GPU in the vBIOS for overclocking and thats why it needs more juice. On the GPU side this laptop has better cooling than the MSI GT75VR, so there is some room even with the low quality factory paste for some boosted TDP.
All previous laptops with Pascal VGA have lower performance compared to their desktop brothers because the manufacturers lowered the TDP to keep them cooler (except Clevo, they don't give a f*ck and give buyers a 200W TDP GTX 1080). This results in Power throttling which lowers the GPU core clock.
For example my current laptop is an ASUS G752VM. With default vBIOS the TDP is 75W which is pretty low if we compare it to the desktop GTX 1060 which has 120W TDP limit.
Because of this the boost clock was around 1720 Mhz core clock.
I increased the TDP in the vBIOS from 75W to 100W (EC has a limit so it did not post with 120W) and without any overclocking the boost clock is 1860 Mhz.
Ofcourse performance has also increased from 11200 Fire Strike graphics score to 12500. This is without OC, if I OC it I can go up to 13700 graphics score.
I am hoping that ASUS increased the TDP of the GTX 1080 for higher and more stable performance and that is why a 2nd adapter is needed...at least I can not think of anything else.Last edited: Apr 9, 2018 -
G703GX Review - Core i9 and NVIDIA RTX 2080 Gaming Laptop g Laptop
-
Hello all.
I’m currently contemplating the purchase of an 17.3” ASUS ROG G703 GX Chimera series laptop (the one with the RTX 2080) from vendors who offer customization, repaste and display cherry picking services.
Considering that ASUS ROG has been using the same chassis, motherboard and intel chipset for the last couple of years I’m posting my query in all threads across the ROG G703 lineup for increased feedback and input from either owners or vendors regarding the customization I want to do. I guess this does not count against the Cross posting rule as I’m posting multiple times in the same forum and not across different ones?
Can the ASUS MOBO and the Mobile Intel HM370 Express Chipset handle DDR4 3200MHz SO-DIMM RAM (2 x 8GB dual channel), as in XMP keeping the system stable and reliable at those overclocked frequencies. This G.SKILL Ripjaws module is the laptop memory I’ve found with the tightest CAS latency timings 16-18-18-43 (tighter than most 2666 kits I’ve browsed), price of dual channel kit 200$. Or should I just stick to 2666 MHz as the mobile MOBO might be less capable than a desktop MOBO due to voltage and thermal limitations? Have any of the owners put 3200 Mhz RAM or Higher inside their ASUS G703 Chimera?
How easy is it for a vendor to acquire and swap the AUO B173HAN03.2 AHVA Display panel (6-bit, slower response time) for the AUO B173HAN04.0 AHVA Display panel (8-bit, faster response time)? Both display panels are 1080p, G-Synch enabled and have a refresh rate of 144Hz, so I guess they are plug and play for the ASUS G703 Chimera series. Comparison chart. Only thing that worries me is the presence of a MUX to switch of G-Synch and enable Nvidia Optimus for the GX model over the GI, would the MUX accept the newer 8-bit display panel and still work? Has any owner here upgraded their screen successfully?
I would greatly appreciate any answers to my queries.
Best regards. -
I wonder if ASUS RoG will refresh the G703 series with the Intel Z390 chipset and Intel 9th generation 8 core 45 Watt TDP Coffe Lake Refresh CPUs this summer. The 9th gen mobile H, HK CPUs are rumored to launch mid to late April.

I've recently got in possession of a Chimera, model G703VI, the one with 7700HQ and 1080 (found it cheap enough). But I've noticed a problem with the front speakers (the ones to the left and right of the ROG logo, below the display). It seems they do not produce any sound at all.
I have installed all the drivers from Asus correctly, played with the Sonic studio settings in order to find and change audio. I've also booted an Ubuntu and tried the audio there.
It's like this: When I get closer to the front speakers, it seems that only the 2 more powerful ones can be heard. If I put my fingers on the panel plastic or on top of the speaker grills, there's no vibration.
Can I get a few opinions from potential possessors of a G703 series laptop? I want to be sure whether it is a hardware problem. -
Front speakers? Are you sure there's supposed to be more than two?
When I opened mine (703GX) I saw only these two:
On a side note, I like the audio on this laptop more than the previous ones. It seems to reproduce directional sounds better and there's no frame buzzing/vibration.Unstoppable36SG likes this. -
Yep! It's also mentioned in the Tech Specs: "2x 2W speakers + 2x 4.5W speakers with Smart AMP technology". I think the 2W are the ones that are near the screen hinges (which are not working for me), while the 4.5W ones are the ones down, and located inside the chasis.
I've read reviews where it was mentioned how the 2W speakers are for highs and high-mediums, while the others for bass.
Edit: If you play some music, can you sense any vibration coming from the 2W front-facing speaker grills if you place your hand on them? -
-
I've also booted Ubuntu and the front-facing speakers weren't working there either. If it's something from the drivers/settings, it must be really hidden. Anyway, you are able to tell whether those 2 speakers are also transmitting sound, right? The ones that are both relatively close to each of the display hinges. -
Edit: NOT an audio expertLast edited: Apr 9, 2019Unstoppable36SG likes this. -
I'd say I'm 80% sure they work. With normal sounds/music it's very hard to tell sounds like high freq is coming from there.
Unstoppable36SG likes this. -
I think it is easier tell sounds coming out of them if the volume would be set fairly low, maybe 5-10%? They shouldn't vibrate, but I wasn't able to hear them still, with different types of sounds already tested.
By the way, I own this laptop for like 2 days now. I got it at a good discount from a local store (less than 1500 eur, VAT included), but it is the base model with 7700HQ. And the bottleneck from the CPU is just a bit more than I expected, even with 4x DSR in some games for reaching 4K. (Division 2, for example, can reach maximum like 80% GPU usage in city, crowded areas).
Here, this costed less than all of the mid-range chassis 1070 laptops. But now I'm wondering whether it is worth keeping it or not after all. I do need to create a new thread for a discussion like this, right? -
So long as you have a 4C/8T CPU I think the priority should always be go for the fastest GPU you can afford, which is what you did.
The VI is a good version of the G703 to have, even without the unlocked i7. 1 power brick only, good thermals, no issues with undervolting, all 16 PCIe lines from the CPU dedicated to the GPU (and not shared with storage like the newer models), and a CM chipset (not HM like the newer models). And you got it for a great price. Keep it and enjoy!Last edited: Apr 9, 2019Unstoppable36SG likes this. -
Thank you! I think it is easier to check them at a lower volume, when the 2 other ones are also producing less sound. I still need to test myself and find any clue of sound getting out of the 2 front-facing ones.
And yes, I've seen the thread for the Coffee Lake variant of the G703, there are some UV problems. And the double power brick can indeed be a pain in the back
<<<<<Regarding ThrottleStop, I've used it to apply -80mv for starters -- but I've noticed lower Cinebench R15 score (699 with -80mv undervolt, 730 with the default +19.5 mv). Also lower performance in games slightly, for example in Division 2<<<<
^^^ No longer true, CPU performance is now constant while in the Extreme config from the Gaming Center.
Temps are ok for now but I'm still going to test more, even before I'm getting another RAM stick. The clock speed is 3410mhz, when all cores are in use.
Edit: Can't wait to see whether the tweeter speakers from your laptop seem to produce sound or notLast edited: Apr 9, 2019 -
We should find a sample audio link with very high pitch tones or something like this to test consistently that the speakers are actually working properly.
I've found -100mv works on my i7 8750H. At -120mv it froze after a few minutes in a game menu.
Edit: also, I've limited the frequency, I run it at 3.1Ghz all the time. I have no noticeable performance drop in games (I don't keep everything on ultra) and the fans don't go as crazy as they would on the default turbo 4.1Ghz speed.Last edited: Apr 9, 2019Unstoppable36SG likes this. -
I uninstalled the Realtek Audio drivers downloaded from Asus and now there are 2 options for speakers. The tweeters work!
Can I get a share in PM of the archive with the eSupport folder (for G703VI) from one of the owners here? I'm thinking of taking the Audio driver from there. -
Regarding the processor, well, medium or lower settings do in fact put a higher stress on the CPU, because there would be more fps to push. Albeit I'm not surprised seeing the 8750H to manage well with no hiccups, as it is 6C/12T. Anyway, you are also probably running your RAM in dual-channel, mine still only has 1 stick of 16gb.
Edit: All of the speakers work correctly now! There were 2 drivers for Audio and I had the newer one.
But the first and older one worked correctly.Attached Files:

I don’t know what ASUS we’re thinking WRT that single channel memory.
Edit: To be honest, I think before you make too many decisions about how adequate the 7700HQ is, I would correct that single channel memory problem. If I set my 7820HK to 3.4GHz, it still isn't bottlenecking the GTX 1080 in everything I've tried (Anthem, Division 2, Fallout 76). No hiccups of any kind. And if you look at PC performance analysis of these games around the internet, anything past 4C/4T shows little improvement, except in Division 2 where there are small increases as you go up to 6C/12T (emphasis on small increases).
You're cutting memory bandwidth to the CPU in half with that setup (18.75GB/s instead of 37.5GB/s), and Skylake/Kaby Lake/Coffee Lake have been shown to scale pretty well with faster memory. I'd argue with dual channel memory you won't experience hiccups or frame drops like you are now.
Edit2: I found this benchmark of a 7820HK/1080 setup in AC Odyssey, which was very CPU heavy from what I remember when I played it (all 8 threads pegged between 80-100). It shows a massive difference in single vs dual channel.

I'm having a couple issues with Shadowplay's audio recording, the audio is very high pitched. Tried a lot of combinations (and uninstalls) with Sonic Studio and the Realtek driver, couldn't fix it still. Do you think you can share your eSupport drivers folder with me, as I also have the VI variant?sniffin likes this. -
Realtek: 6.0.1.8224
Sonic Studio: [BETA]3.6.12.44181
If you need any others let me know, or maybe someone with good upload could host it somewhere. As far as your issues goes, wouldn't that be Nvidia related? -
And I used DDU to uninstall the Nvidia Driver and Realtek audio drivers, the problem persisted. The other solutions online for similar problems didn't apply to my laptop so far. -
Regarding the RAM upgrade... I need to remove the ram from the slot that's beneath the motherboard. I've contacted Asus about it, they've told me of a local Asus-certified service and also let me know that it there will be a price to pay for it, as it is not a warranty problem, but an user choice. It costs 30 euro.
Have your model arrived with 2x16gb ram? I bought for mine a duo of 16gb HyperX 2400 CL14 and intend to only have them in the laptop for the dual channel.
With all 3 sticks, the ram operates at 2133 mhz. I didn't receive a definitive answer whether it does void the warranty to remove that stick.Last edited: Apr 18, 2019 -
Wow, ASUS RoG is putting LIQUID METAL on the CPU die right from the factory, Conductonaut from Thermal Grizzly, just to properly cool the 9th gen 8C/16T i9 9880HK on the RoG G703 GXR!!! They claim a 13 C temperature drop.

Do you have any firmware installation software - or automatic updates software installed - Asus has a few historically, check your installed Asus software for the culprit.
There is also the Asus USB "flashback" port - USB device with BIOS file at top level at boot will auto update the BIOS found in the root of the USB device - or by pressing the flashback button.Last edited: Jun 25, 2019Papusan and PredatoR_TR like this. -

It's unlikely it happened on it's own without assistance from an external force...

These latest BIOS updates were for security. ASUS pushed them through Windows Update for lots of ROG notebooks. That’s how it installed.
