I noticed that Newegg finally has the G75 for order.
Newegg.com - ASUS G75VW-NS72 Notebook Intel Core i7 3720QM(2.60GHz) 17.3" 16GB Memory 750GB HDD + 256GB SSD HDD 7200rpm Blu-Ray Burner NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670M
Any chance that Newegg will release an identical version of the listed G75VW-NS72 except with a 660 instead? The -NS72 variant has everything I want except I rather have a 660 instead of a 670.
-
So let me just get this straight.
- The 660 is better than the 670 because the 670 is just a re-badged card that still uses old technology.
- The 660 is cheaper than the 670.
- BUT the 670 has more overclocking potential than the 660.
So ultimately which one should users go for??
Also, will ASUS release more models with the 675 maybe or even the AMD cards?
Thanks in advance. -

It's technically more efficient. It's not more powerful.
If you are looking for raw performance stick with the 670m.
The 6xx series isn't a huge technical improvement from the 5xx series. -
oc'd 660 > stock 670 but
oc'd 670 > oc'd 660
i would go for 660.
in my opinion oc'd 660 would be more than enough to play nearly all recent games on ultra. even in the next 3 years it would be able to play the latest games on high if not medium considering gtx460 from 2 years ago can still play BF3 on ultra with 42 fps according to nvidia's site.
Optimize : Battlefield 3: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 - GeForce
660 also hav less power consumption means longer battery, less heat and less noise.
the fact that it is a newer kepler architechture compared to the 670 fermi means that it needs more graphics driver updates before it can achieve its max potential. im hoping nvidia would pump out those drivers quickly as its their latest tech.
also, as stated 660 is cheaper =)
unless you are a hardcore gamer who wants to play every latest game on its highest settings for the next 3-5 years then i think u shouldnt consider neither the 660 nor the 670. -
Couldn't have said it better. Even further, if you really feel the need to be future proof for the next 3-4 years by playing every game in ultra I wouldn't even be looking at Asus. I would go for alienware or clevo or whatever brand you can get with the ATI 7970m videocard.
-
Okay ,so, which is GPU is better? I already got one with the 670M, was that the right choice?
-
Amazon sells their ASUS for $1499.99 (660M+DVD+16GB RAM) and Tigerdirect sells their for $1525.00 (670m+Blueray+16GB ram)
Isnt Amazon overpricing their unit? I should pay $50 for the Tigerddirect right? Better Graphics and Blueray. Or am I missing something? -
I actually went ahead and took Synapse's advice about the Samsung 830 256 SSD. Got it switched out, as they just called me this morning to confirm processeing my order and I let them know.
I'd rather have a stable SSD than a faster one. It was only faster by 100MB/s write anyways. -
I think you are failing to see the point.
If you want more performance, go for 670M. If you want slightly less performance but better technology in terms of power consumption, temperature and efficiency, go for the 660M like I did. -

The new Asus G75 seems cool but when I looked at Sager NP9170 on XoticPC, it has the option on getting either 670m or the 675m, and both of those are Optimus enabled maximizing the use of the Ivy bridge's Intel HD Graphics 4000! If only Sager/Clevo had a service center here on the Philippines, I would choose Sager over Asus this time =( But Asus has 2 years Global warranty which more desirable than having no support at all.

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
in the asus environment yes. -
I can't decide if I should get the $1250 ASSU G75 from Bestbuy (since it's so cheap) or wait for the 7970 Samsung (Guessing about $1900). Help me decide plz.
-
The answer seems pretty clear to me. Are you strapped for cash at all? If money doesn't matter, then go for the Samsung.
-
Money of course does matter. But the fact 7970 out performs GTX 660M like miles.... I dont know. I want a laptop that'll last me 3-4 years.
-
In that case, you should consider the Best Buy model. It's cheaper, offers great performance, and will last you 3-4 years provided you lower the settings a bit in future games. The money you save ($650!!) will go a long way in paying for the other things in life.
-
since he quoted prices, it seems he does have a budget and price does matter.
If price didn't matter he could get whatever he wanted, but clearly priceis impacting his decision.
If he can afford both - I don't see why he wouldn't wait though. -
Bestbuy model is the cheapest G75 version, correct? I have a 120GB SATA III so I dont really care about the slow HD it has.
Is there a way to avoid sales tax? -
Good point. If he could comfortably afford both, then the Samsung is definitely the one to get.
As far as I know, the BB model is the cheapest one out there. Unless you live in a tax free state, or know someone who does and can buy it for you, then you're stuck with paying tax. Good thing you have that SSD. I picked up the BB the other day and the HDD is slow! -
What brand is the stock SSD that it comes with? When I get mine, I want to delete a bunch of installed crap, but how do I do it and make sure I don't delete a driver or something important?
-
I called Bestbuy. They have a 30 days no hassle return policy. So I will try this 660M card out. If i'm not happy with it.. i'll return it for a Samsung 7970. =)
-
They say its 30 days on standard items, but I think the laptop policy is different, I would double check that to be 100% sure you can open a laptop and still return it for a full credit.
They have become sticklers on returning items such as laptops and video game systems.
I know I am waiting for other brick and mortars to get the 670M version in as I find it much easier to deal with an actual streo when you have something wrong, than an internet vendor. -
I confirmed it with BB. They have a 30 day return policy, even for laptops and no restocking fee. They apparently stopped charging restocking fees a little over a year ago.

Yeah I will go with the Bestbuy model $1250 + $108 Tax =( and try this laptop out. I have a feeling 660M might be too weak fro my taste but there's no harm in trying it out, right?
Maybe this will help me ease the waiting time on the Samsung. I loved the G74, I'm sure I'll love G75.. even thought it's from Bestbuy lol.
I'll run Battlefield 3 and let you guys know on the FPS on Ultra/High. -
I don't think BF3 is going to run all so well on ultra with the 660m - your going to need to oclock it to prob get better fps.
Based on the info here:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-660M.71859.0.html
It states it has performance to that of a 570m which gets the below benchmarks in BF3:

41 high, 16 ultra -
I like the specs of the G75, but I'd like a 15" instead of 17". Is there a similar asus in 15" coming out soon?
-
There is, it's the Asus G55. Google for it I'm pretty sure they have the same specs. There might be a couple of differences like the SSD drive or Bluray but mostly they will be pretty much the same in gaming performance. Google for it for more information.
-
Okay I placed an order with Bestbuy, I will pick it up tonight. Let's see if this video card will have me keep the laptop or return it for Samsung's 7970. Thanks guys!
-
Does this model have a special niche or something? I was interested in the older generations and I'm now looking into the G55. The only thing is, it seems way overpriced. Sager/Clevo offers much better spec offerings at the same price. Very similar laptops with the same specs are a few hundred dollars cheaper. Just wondering for those of you that ordered/are ordering this, what made you go for the G55/G75 over everything else that is much better priced?
-
Im confused, the asus website says the g75 comes with the 3760QM (2.6ghz) and all ive been hearing is 3610. Can someone confirm?
-
It's 3720 and it only comes with 3D model
-
Is the 2.3 (3610) sufficient for gaming in 2D though?
-
More than good enough.
-
based off powernotebooks.com the sager NP9150 is at $1319 as compared to G55 which is at $1459. However if you bump up the ram for the sager to 12gb and also put a windows 7 HP in it to match with the asus, it would come up to $1439 for the sager. only $20 cheaper. As stated earlier in this forum, the gtx660 vs gtx670 has each of its pros and cons. i prefer the 660. comparing these 2 configuration, the asus would have larger HDD(those with SSD would say it doesnt matter but i think its still a plus if u place it in ur second hard drive bay), cooler looks(in my opinion), more silent and probably better cooling, bluetooth 4.0 instead of 3.0, 2 year warranty instead of 1, and gaming mouse + backpack.
these are my reasons to get the g55 over the sager as I wanted the win7 OS in it and also the 12gb ram. =p
EDIT: oh and correct me if im wrong, the sager doesnt have a second hard drive bay. seems like on powernotebooks, if you wanna place a second hard drive, it would take up the space of the optical drive bay. means no cd / dvd =\ -
I'm 90% sure Sager from powernotebooks does come with a 2nd HD port. I recall talking with a rep about it. No need to replace it out with a CD bay.

Oh really? I guess if the rep says so then there is unless the rep was mistaken. I wasnt sure as their configurator, Configurator only allowed me to place one in the optical drive. If thats the case, they should have an option for the second hard drive bay.
-
It's not like it's an i3, silly.

I just purchased the Samsung series 7 gamer. I can have a review up for whenever I get it.
