Yeah, previously their site incorrectly stated it was DDR3, I'm assuming whatever paperwork their European branch has is the outdated/incorrect info and that's what the person was reading off of.

That's because the 850M actually had a DDR3 and DDR5 version, and it was the same in America, we got the DDR3 version as well. The 860M does not come in DDR3, it only comes in DDR5. So no matter where you live if you get an 860M it will be DDR5.

The wait is killing me. I pre-ordered it and the standard delivery says it'll come between the 24th and 27th of September ! :(
Sincerely hope its worth the wait !

Are you sure you asked about video RAM? They maybe thought you were talking about regular RAM which is DDR3. But vRAM for the gpu can (and in this case should) be GDDR5.

I just got confirmation from "Asus ROG Nordic" on facebook that the G551/GL551 and GX500 will be released in Scandinavia in the beginning next year and that the G550JK will be discontinued and replaced by the G551/GL551.

Top comment: I asked if the G500JK will be discontinued and replaced by the G551/GL551 and the answer is "yes".

Bottom comment: Someone asked when the G551/GL551 will be released in Scandinavia (2 or 8 weeks?) the answer is "It will be released next in the beginning of next year".

Oh dear. Thanks anyway Asus. You wont get my money this time (neither). Insane time frame between US and Scandinavia releases. I still don't have a crystal ball, but I am pretty confident competitors can do something more attractive during this time it seems to take from Asus (six months from announcement to actually having it in stores).

In addition, G500JK is already outdated & overpriced.

G550JK was outdated the second it was announced, they should have put 860m in the to compete with msi and lenovo back then.
It's funny how they still have problems with releasing a 15" with 860m and i wonder how long will it take asus to release the next upgraded version. I think it's sad, the way asus deals with its customers.

I'm not going to get too excited and believe that the US release date is really in two weeks. Amazon has disappointed me before.

If US release is taking so long I can't imagine when this notebook will hit stores here in Canada. I really hope that wait is worth it. I've been without a notebook since July :(

My drop dead date for buying a new laptop is Black Friday. I hope this comes out before then, or that I can find some good deals on current models that are at the moment more expensive than this will be.

This is my first time buying a laptop and I had no idea what a nightmare it would be. I've been ready to purchase for a few months now. I would love a laptop today but I'll wait as long as it takes, impatiently.

same here, mate, i've been looking for a notebook for over a year with the idea that i need to buy it before i go to college and since then i helped many people buy their own but when i actually want one myself it's hell, i finally chose g551 because except for msata it has everything else i want but now i can't even get it. i'd love to buy msi ge60 instead but the temps are awful and from what i heard(from retailers and customers alike) they won't generally last very long.

i just want asus to release this one already

Yeah. That's what frustrates me about ASUS. They announce the exact specifications and design I want, but then when they release the laptop they send out all kinds of crazy configurations differently based on the country, and never know when their own product is releasing. Amazing that it's a viable business model, I consider myself very impatient, but despite how stupid a company is I want the exact product I want, even if they irritate me. But I would expect your standard consumer to just buy something else.

i agree 100%, if i were less informed, didn't spend that much time looking for a perfect notebook and i didn't have "friends" who sell IT stuff, i'd totally go for something else the moment they moved the release date beyond (edit: early)september

Well, I am prepared to pay bit more and get something else on October or November. I am definitely not going to wait next year when this might come Northern Europe... That release date they gave was an insult :nah:

Oh yeah, it took even longer for UK customers than us to get G550JK... Wonder if they get their G551 before prince Georges coronation.

Hmm interesting... because the store I linked to says it has 16GB RAM, and from this site you linked it says the version with the 850M has only 12GB RAM, and the 860M has 16GB.

So either the RAM or the GPU are listed wrongly... I'm hoping it's the GPU! :)

    Middle October though... ouch. :(

Ahh just noticed this post... seems you are right as when I google the JK version it's all 850M. :(

The 850M GDDR5 is still a good GPU however (only 13% slower than an 860M at stock), so it will be interesting to see how much higher the JM with 860M model will be priced...

They still haven't specified if the 850M is GDDR5 which indicates its highly likely it can be DDR3.

I would assume thats a pretty safe bet. The performance diff between an 850 with gddr5 and an 860 would be very miniscule, enough that there wouldnt really be a point in offering both as options.

Are you guys thinking you will be offering these laptops with customization options, etc? I'd rather order from one of the vendors here as i can specify clean installs of windows, and different SSD's, etc etc.

does anyone know the price, cause im seeing the price in swedish vendors and they said about 1299 chf or w.e they use and its 1350 dollars, but when they putted the preorder in amazon it said that it was 1099 dollars, im really curios if its worth the wait cause i could be buying the y50 right now instead of waiting till it comes out in october :/.also im in a budget and 200 dollars is a lot of difference to me.

Um, where is this vendor? Just curious 'cos Swedish guy (on Asus payroll) on official rog nordic fb page said it comes there in the beginning of 2015. Also, why Swedish vendors would use Swiss francs? I might have missed something here though....

Hmm... all the stores I've seen are listing GDDR5, and I guess it's possible on a ROG laptop, as the GDDR3 version would be a pretty serious performance drop. We will see, I guess.

However I am now really considering a Schenker XMG C504 as it's also a very good spec for a very good price (only 100-150 or so EUR more than the ASUS)... mySN.eu | XMG | Schenker Technologies - XMG C504 15.6" Notebook

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M - NotebookCheck.net Tech gddr5 and ddr3 so could be any. "Despite the lower core clock, the GDDR5 version usually takes the lead over the DDR3 model and sometimes even beats the Kepler variant of the GeForce GTX 860M. ", so theres that

so guys I found some pics of N551's internal, which should translate to G551's internal because asus typically doesn't change cooling for these kinds of models...

no msata or m.2 slot but I guess you can use the ODD caddy.

the cooling on the other hand doesn't look that great...

woooooww duude cooollll. thanks that is really usefull, kinda dissapointer for the no msata, but the odd caddy is very usefull since the y50 doesnt even have one, but still the price is very low for how much it has. and i guess only 2 SO-DIMM slots ?D:

    wow, what a ripoff,

What we are getting is just a G56JK with a 860m:
    ASUS ROG G56JK-EB72 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit - Newegg.com

This laptop is half a year late and now we are getting this low quality single fan layout BS and not the dual fan rear vent that ROG notebooks should have...

I thought asus was going to upgrade the g550jk with a 860m but this is a piece of crap...

They're putting out this single fan side vent version so they can upsell their new thin gx500

After all, who would buy the gx500 if they released the better g550jk version which is 1.1" thick and has dual fan rear vents?

So they just make this tier single fan side vent lower tier and charge almost as much.

yeah this machine definitely needs some upgrades in cooling, they could've at least sticked with g550jk's cooling, but they chose not to...

Just the reviews will be able to tell how good the "Intelligent cooling design for maximum cooling efficiency and minimum noise" is. At least the G56JK has good reviews with decent temps.
