On another note, you're probably right. Just checked the pictures of notebookcheck and the G551 is indeed closer to the N551. The N550 has dual cooling, the N551 has not. The G500 had dual cooling, the G551 not. Not sure if good.

Honestly i think we're all jumping the gun and panicking for no reason. Lets wait until they release real solid info and then we can start the hemming and hawing,

The reason I'm concerned is that I have it pre-ordered and it's supposed to be here on the 19th, not sure if it will happen but I'd like to know if I should/need to cancel.

Not sure what the big deal here is as they could have just taken the N550 chasis which has dual cooling and an IPS panel , upgraded it to a 850M with GDDR5 or a 860M and they would have got tons of customers who are all stuck to choose as an alternative the lame screen Y50 or the Kepler based MSI laptops.

How hard is that to comprehend and release? Sadly, wish these companies could understand the customer base better instead of doing products which come out with a downer starting from specs and the customer is forced to choose between subpar products.

FYI the next Gen of Maxwell cards are being unveilled on the 18th or 19th September. Buying a laptop with an 860M now might not be the best time. If you need a laptop asap, then go for it, otherwise I'd wait a couple more weeks and see what happens with the new cards. If you wait those 2 weeks, you'll also likely get a few reviews on the GM551 before you buy ^^

But so you know, current benchmarks are showing the 970M being about 62% faster than the 870M. This means it would be pretty much twice as good as the 860M and if you still want an 860M, they'll likely fall in price as the 860M will also likely get a 9XXM rebrand. More info can be found towards the end of this thread:

So I don't NEED a laptop by any means...but I've also been waiting for a while, and it's kind of a pain. So I'm normally a desktop guy so I have to ask...I mean that's great that the next cards are being announced soon, but after they're announced won't it then take months to see the first laptops with it, then even more months before a laptop configured how you want is released? If I only need to wait 2-3 months I'm open to that, but if we're talking a 6 month wait that isn't exactly around the corner.

EDIT: Also I have no interest in anything more powerful than the 860M line, like I wouldn't mind a more powerful 960M, I just mean I don't want the x70M+ line of cards.

Until the first announcement is made on the 18th Septmeber, no one knows exactly what will be released and when.

It's looking like it will definitely be the unveiling of the 980/970M GPUs, meaning refreshed laptops will HOPEFULLY roll out 2-3 weeks later, mid-late October. There's no news on the 950/960/965 GPUs yet, but they could well be announced with the top end GPUs. Either way I would expect roughly 3 weeks after release that the GPU is fully rolling out in new notebooks etc... Obviously I'm speculating + estimating, so don't quote me on it. I'm just suggesting at least wait until the 18th of September when you can see what is coming out and you can decide for yourself if it interests you.

For your information though, on the thread that I linked one of the laptops which had been tested with the 970M was the Gigabyte P35 V3. That's right, not V2 but V3. That means there are manufacturers who have been testing the new GPUs in their rigs so potentially you could see them rolling onto shelves much sooner than you think!

Getting a product out with a 970M is not likely to have a big affect on Asus's bottom line so it's not something they are likely to assign more resources to speed up the release process. How long has the wait been for this version since they 'announced' it? Take that and add more time. My grandson is chomping at the bit to get the G551 but we may just give up and get something else. Asus doesn't seem to be the best in communicating with their customers!

I've been waiting months to make the right call. I've waited so long in fact, the next gen is about to come out. Now think of it this way, roughly a 60% performance increase in the previous gen for the same price as what it's currently at now? That's worth waiting a couple more weeks for now.

Also if you want to buy something now, I suggest looking at the Acer Aspire V Nitro. Depends where you live but Germany is shipping them out very well, costs the same and has almost identical features, if anything a slimmer chassis and a nicer design (each to their own :D).

Just got an email from Amazon:

Due to a lack of availability, we will not be able to obtain the following item(s) from your order:

    "ASUS GL551JM-EH71 15.6-Inch Laptop"

We've canceled the item(s) and apologize for the inconvenience. If you see a charge for the canceled item, we will refund you within 1-2 business days.

    What a joke.

I like the look of the Acer but I've heard of quality control issues with them and just general reliability that had me concerned. That laptop looks pretty nice though, if the price was right. Looks like I'm most likely not getting this laptop. ASUS really drops the damn ball. They make the nicest looking laptops but in terrible configurations and make them impossible to get until they're already inferior for the price. Frustrating.

I'm tempted to buy anything BUT an ASUS at this point after how terrible it has been trying to get a UX303 or GL551.

i'm getting an acer v nitro on monday, sick of this asus BS. i wanted to buy g550jk but noooo, they sent like 10 pcs to my country and now this, waiting for g551 for 2 months.
and acer is better for me in every aspect i didnt like about asus. its thinner, doesnt have odd, it has an ips display for sure, lighter, doesnt have that stupid badge and flashy design.. and it has 2 fans!
it is very well built and i dont think i will have any problems with it, high end acers are of very good quality.

This is so frustrating, I've been researching which laptop to buy for like 5 months. First I was interested in the Lenovo Y50, but that one has a terrible screen (I know I can replace it, but I find that too risky), and then I saw that XoticPC was selling it with custom screens, so I was going to try that, but they removed the option before I could order it. Then I tried ordering a custom MSI GE60 from them, but they couldn't continue the order because my billing and shipping addresses differ, since I'm only in the US temporarily, but they still didn't let me buy it. I had been following this G551 since its announcement, when it was supposed to be released in "Late July or Early August", so when I saw that Amazon was selling it I thought I would FINALLY get my laptop, and pre-ordered the 256GB SSD version as fast as I could, but apparently, I still wasn't fast enough. I can't believe how ridiculous Asus is.

I might give this 15" Acer Aspire V Nitro a try, now, but I can't find it for sale anywhere. -__- Does anyone know where I can get one in the US?

If you bank will let you add the alternate address and we can verify it then we can accept the card. Unless its an international bank which we do not accept at all. I assume its that since you say you're in the US temporarily. If you bank lets you do a bank wire transfer online that would be something we do accept.

Just a FYI we also make custom listings on Amazon which does accept international cards. If there is a certain model/configuration you would like that we do have available like the GE60 you can let me know and I will put it on Amazon for you to order.

damn, i dont understand why is this asus gl551 is taking sooo llooonngg, im even considering buying the Y50 >.>, but the gl551 is way cheaper and maybe have better screen/upgradeability. Ands its not like they are even saying much of it, im kinda concerned that this laptop is more like a bait than a real deal, for like the gx500 or something :/

Well damn. I gave them until today to come out with a firm release date, and ASUS has failed.

Looking at alternatives, thinking about buying the MSI GS60 Ghost. Anybody know what's up with all the "MSI is bad" reputation?

In my opinion they aren't necessarily bad. Just bulky, ugly, expensive, and noisy. Which are all deal breakers for me. They're probably fine if you don't plan on moving it around much and don't mind my other complaints.

The ghost has more heating and noise issues than any other 'thin' gaming laptop. They all suffer but the MSI Ghost is the worst and the temps are shockingly high, enough to actually burn you with it on your lap. Furthermore, MSI is renowned for having quite a poor build quality. Much of the internal is plastic. Plastic + Heat doesn't bode well for the lifetime for the rig.

Have a look at the Acer V Nitro as an alternative. Almost identical in terms of spec and it's actually thinner + lighter than the GM551. It's selling well in Germany, so have a look on Amazon.de or German reseller websites and see if they ship to you (E.g. they do actually ship the the UK and some shops already have stock). Otherwise wait a couple more weeks and it should be available in the UK :)

Besides the glowing badge and the fan noise, I found the gs60 quite nice. In fact, I picked one up again from newegg on an open box sale. I originally returned it because it was overpriced but now I really feel like I got a great deal. I'm finally considering keeping something! :)

Yeah, optical drive is a thing I wouldn't miss. Not so much the LAN port which is gone in all slim-case-notebooks. Kinda stupid that they only sell it either with LAN+DVD, or without these two.

Just because an old model has a flaw doesn't mean the manufacturer will continue to have the same issue in future laptop generations.

Read some reviews before assuming, the keyboard has been described as good.

90% of all Acers available have the same style of keyboard. If the top-end ones are better then fine, but for me the bran name is tarnished by the less than mediocre quality of the laptops I have seen and used.

This is so annoying. I'll probably be having the N550JK since I only have a chance to buy until November. It's at $1,061 right now on Amazon (if you pick Amazon as a seller), but with delayed shipping. With the 551, I was hopeful of getting a 860 for the same price or maybe even the same 850, just for less.

There is one machine I just discovered, though. This Acer Aspire V3 would let me save a couple of hundred bucks. Has anyone heard anything about it? Haven't found much info aside from those reviews at the Amazon page. Three things keep me from considering it seriously: the supposedly abysmal screen, no back-lit keyboard and the general bad reputation kind-of-vibe I get from Acer.

Get the Q550LF if you're willing to go that low in specs. Better build quality and you can pick up a refurb for under $600 if you keep an eye on slickdeals. The 840M and 745M are practically the same. The asus also has an msata mini slot, a subwoofer and the option to replace the dvd with a hdd caddy. I've been using one for the past few months until I find my new daily driver.

Edit: also, it has a backlit keyboard and a phenomenal screen.

Yeah, I hear you on refurbs. I went through 3 before I found one I could live with. The only thing wrong with mine is you can see a barcode sticker through the glowing asus logo on the lid, so it looks half lit. Wasn't worth returning again because it had absolutely no backlight bleed on the screen, which is rare.

Think about the fact that you will regret to bought a another laptop when the gl551 will come out. :(

Don't do a mistake. We can be sure that it will come out before Christmas.

That's the thing though, the Acer has the same specs as the GL551 but with a thinner body and more fans. It actually looks better since ASUS is dragging their feet, and laptops with stronger graphics cards are coming out soon. They've waited too long.

I'm tempted to do the thing all the euros on here do and whine incessantly about how they're screwing over (in this case) the US with the acer and we're not getting it until later and yadda yadda yadda. But I won't.

I will admit the acer looks mighty fine, but, i have a feeling its gonna be a good 150-200 more than the gl551

Well based on ASUS track record with me, I'm fine paying an extra $200 for a product that actually exists.

I'm a patient... I will wait for the new nvidia card 960m/970m.

A alternate of gl551 version will come out with these new graphic card. Not confirmed, but I'm sure about that.

G550 barely came out in limited quantities and GL551 has no release date, let alone the next generation model. So the one you're discussing hasn't even existed in reality, let alone the one you're dreaming of. Hope you don't mind waiting 6+ months.

So people keep posting links to Amazon and it never seems to work for me when I click on them. It just directs to me to a weird looking Amazon site. Does anyone know why that is happening? Also I can't find the laptop listed on amazon.
