Same situation here... but I just couldn't wait any longer since my 1st programing assignment is due very soon.
I never bought laptop from Amazon before, but I think it has return policy similar to Newegg.
-
-
Well.. no idea on that. Just cross fingers and hope it has IPS.
-
Do you know if I can return if it isn't IPS? I'll be staying 10 days, plenty of time for returning
EDIT: I travel to the US every six months, but I'm gonna need the laptop for some jobs abroad/other states, the old one is a 2010-ish Asus that can't game anything, compared to my desktop... I tend to get lots of free time and still couldn't finish a single game this year.
-
Most likely not. As you can see from the comparison chart on Amazon product page for N550 models it clearly stated IPS display but for GL551 models there's no indication. Hope I was wrong tho..
-
They've also stated 4810MQ instead of 4710HQ and we all knew it was wrong....
-
Yea I was thinking of replacing the optical drive with either an ssd or hdd(is that possible?hdd) Is around 250g good?
sorry laptop noob. this will be my first lapop. (well had a y50 4k for a few days but returned it) -
Yes you can return but it counts as openbox item, so there will be restocking fee added (you probably only get 75% - 85% back).
If you could tell from the box that it's not IPS screen without opening it, then you can get full refund.
This is from my experience, please check return policy for Amazon.
In the comparison sheet it says 4710HQ, while in the technical details it says 4750HQ.
Why is so hard to get things right? -
We usually reserve the ssd for operating systems and most used applications, so 250 GB is plenty for me. And yes it is possible just search for the appropriate caddy. If you are going for dual buy HDD and replace optical with ssd(obviously less expensive).
Yes I've checked and it is exactly as you've said, which makes me sad. I'm gonna try and see if xotic or gentech can deliver it this week. But absolutely not sure about the buy if the 970m is on the corner -
Seems like the screen is not IPS and similar to the G56JK as both are mentioned as '15.6" FHD (1920*1080) anti-glare display' which makes me believe its a TN panel .
-
Exactly my thoughts but three(?) ppl contacted some reps and they've said IPS.... I think I'm waiting until someone gets it.
-
The Biogamer girl review of it from yesterday didn't state whether it was IPS or not?
-
I don't know, but this http://asuslaptopsreview.com/reviews/asus-gl551jm-dh71-review/ says IPS
EDIT: no mention of IPS on biogamer girl review, just says FHD... It doesn't even say that no IPS is disappointing, which makes me question the review -
Seems like as per a poster on another forums with a laptop seller, apparently Asus is planning on refreshing the GL551JM with the 9XXM GPUs and IPS panel in November December... Seems like its a waiting game for this laptop since eternity!
-
That biogamer girl review looked like a product advertisement than a review.rehv likes this.
-
Not gonna pull that trigger then. I'll settle with my lap till April when I get back to the us again.
but its OK, I was already prepared, lol.
-
Is the processor i7-4750HQ or i7-4710HQ as it says both on the amazon specifications?
-
Asus say 4710 HQ ...
-
There will be plenty more choices then...
-
I can't wait until November/December. Is it worth it for $1100 or are there better options out there at that price?
-
Seriouslyyy....that sucks. Whats your source? Guess Ill just keep on waiting if that's true.
-
Who is buying the GL551?
-
The Acer is getting good reviews too, so if both have an IPS screen and an 860M I'll most likely get whichever comes out first (with an SSD built-in). I don't feel like doing any manual maintenance.
EDIT: I'd like to hear more details about the 970M/IPS refresh. I'm willing to wait if it's out this year. -
There are several options within this price range:
1) Y50, i5/i7+860m, 1T 5400, and 8G SSD/without, battery life is short and screen sucks
2) MSI GE60 (469/pro033) , i7+850mDDR5(some people say 850m DDR5 is even better than 860m for some aspects), battery life is extremely short and severe heating issue
3) Gigabyte P15, i7+850m, 1T 5400, reported heating issues and loud fans
4) Asus G56JK, i7 + 850m, 1T 5400
These are laptops that I would recommend. Right now G750JS is on sale at Newegg with i7+870m for 1175 (something like that), but it's 17'' so depends on you. -
Waiting never ends. You will be surprised to see more updated laptops are coming soon.
Besides rumors say G551 features IPS and it's still unknown at this point. -
And rumors say the L is because it lacks IPS

Posted here on this thread.

Anyone know why the SSD model isn't available? That's the only one I have interest in.
-
I'm thinking about it would like to know if it has an IPS screen or not.
-
Sweet! Please please update asap when you get it in hand on the screen!

No problem. It likely won't arrive until the late afternoon.
-
Cool. That's awesome. I'm sure everyone wants to know about whether it's ips or not. Can't wait.
-
Hey did you order from amazon and did you get the extended protection warranty?
-
I ordered from Amazon but I didn't get the extended warranty
-
Hey guys, new to the convo here. Does anybody have any information about how many will be released? I'm afraid that the same thing is going to happen as what did with the G550, where they released a grand total of like 10 to the United states or something ridiculous like that... Anybody have any insight?
-
Hey guys !
I just got the beast. It looks great.
Looks like I'm the first one. The display from what I've used is way better than the y50.
Forgive my noob like question, Is there anyway to find out what display screen is without actually removing the display ?Alias likes this. -
I think the model information may be in your Device Manager. But just curious how it is viewing from angles like high, low, and side to side. If it looks consistent and doesn't get darker/lighter/skewed that's a great sign.
-
Awesome! How do you like it?
-
How does the display look first of all in colors, brightness and contrast? Viewing angles should give you an indication if its an IPS panel.
An alternative method would be to get HWinfo64 and get the model number from the monitor section. -
-
Control Panel -> Device Manager -> right click the entry under "Monitor" (probably "generic pnp monitor") and choose "properties" -> Details -> Find "hardware id" in the dropdown, under "Value" the ID of the screen should be visible.
-
Hey man we're all waiting to hear from you about this screen lol.ShadowXOR likes this. -
The biggest damn mystery of 2014. ASUS won't tell us what type of screen a product they're selling to people for over a grand is. What a world we live in...
-
Great to see that this laptop FINALLY came out. While we're all waiting to find out what type of screen it has, can someone confirm the wi-fi chip used also? Amazon has it listed as "802.11 AGN". Hoping that it also has wireless AC capabilities.
-
So would most of you guys get the gl551 if it was confirmed it was a ips screen?
-
At this point in time... most likely not because of the following reasons:
1) With nVidia 900 series GPU's around the corner (Nov-Jan) and the large performance increases currently indicated by preliminary values it seems like it'll be worthwhile to wait.
2) Assuming that the GL551 is based on the G56 body, then cooling is an issue. The G56 runs a single fan with small intake vents and reviews have noted that cooling has taken a hit. (Again, this is assuming that the two has similar cooling systems).
Fingers crossed that good news comes from the nVidia announcement and new generation laptops come out soon!
