That is pretty bad for Asus since y50 is much thinner, and hopefully the gl551 single fan cooling will not blow . Looks like I might have to go with the older n550jk.

I think that's I don't have the choice... A lenovo y50 + a new replacement screen.
I don't trust acer...
For now, I will still wait... -
I think I am going to give up on waiting for the G551. Why does everyone hate the lenovo screen? Based on this amazon listing, it does have an IPS screen.....
Lenovo Y50 4K UHD Laptop Computer - 59421859 - Intel Core i7-4710HQ / 512GB Solid State Drive / 16GB RAM / 15.6" UHD 3840x2160 Display / NVidia GeForce 860M 4GB / Dual Band Wireless AC / Windows 8.1 at Amazon.com
"The 4k display is amazing to look at. It indeed is an IPS panel unlike the TN panels found on non 4k Lenovo y50's. All colors are produced correctly, no need to calibrate"
Is there any other reason as to why people don't like this laptop? -

Yeah the refresh rate and sub pixel layout I believe.

So did everyone have their orders cancelled or only the ones that ordered was it the SSD version?

EDIT: Everyone keeps saying that but I haven't seen a source yet. I'm a little worried now, since that's the one I'm expecting to get. -
see AUO36ED? that's the monitor ID for B156HTN3.6, exact same LCD used on y50 -

Cross fingers and hope the release date is real this time...
I talked to a sales-rep a few days ago, and he/she seems not knowing too much about this whole issue. However, I was told that the release would be Q4 this year (literally meaning starting in October). I'm a little worried now.
Anyway, Asus could simply release some specs but choose not to, kinda annoying... -
There are several versions of this model, I believe the one with 4G ram is the cheap model number. -
-
I just searched on Chinese websites and N551 is available in store and online now.
The version with 4G ram comes with IPS screen as listed (in fact all available ones now have IPS screen).
Rumors say N551JK will have IPS screen, while JM version has the cheap one.
Some people say temperature gets high on N551... -

Anyway I'm not familiar with N551, so just posting things I saw...
I'm more worried about G551 at this point.
See that on the website for G550, IPS screen is clearly labeled along with dual fan cooling?
Although it might be the information that Asus doesn't want to release (I don't see any reason for that) for G551, but it could also be the laptop doesn't HAVE these. Just my opinions.
Edit: Let's just wait to see what's coming tomorrow... -
Asus have different naming system for same model, which is confusing..
For instance, G550 is called G57 in Asia, and upcoming G551 will be G58. -

It's confirmed that N551JM has the same TN panel used on Y50 on Chinese forum, and the heat issue is pretty bad. Well, time to skip the frustrating waiting..

Sad to say, but this model doesn't look so attractive to me anymore. Not only confusing specs & early user experiences, but time (Asus confirmed this to come Q1 2015 in Scandinavian markets) & technological advances (not least upcoming new GPU's) might have just killed my ambition for this model completely.
This might have been a great buy few months back and not too bad even right now if the price was right. -
-
If I could tolerate the Y50 screen I would have bought the Y50. It was the whole reason I was waiting for this model. ASUS really sucks at releasing products. I'm going with the Acer if it comes out in a timely manner. Considering it already exists in Germany that gets my hopes up.
-
I will simply wait for something with the 970M. My flight is tomorrow, it's not like I'll be able to pick one till the 30th... Luckily I don't need to buy one right now... I hope till April next year they have something with broadwell and 970M.

I have no idea how this girl got a chance to review it, but check this out:
ASUS ROG GL551JM Series (Gaming Laptop Review) - BioGamer Girl
She also have tested some games and said this does not run too hot. I'm wondering the max temps for gpu and cpu -
I noticed that the article didn't say a word about IPS screen, and usually for a hand-on review like this, IPS screen should be mentioned...Demike likes this. -
I found that strange too. Asian websites list it as having an IPS screen, but not a word from other places. Guess we will have to wait a little bit more to find out.
-
This guy reviewed the g771jw which is the gl551 but bigger. It had an IPS screen so that might be good news. Asus G771JW / G771 review - a capable 17 inch multimedia laptop
-
There is no way they're releasing this without an IPS screen. It would be shooting itself in the foot before it even got the gun out of the holster.
*if* and i stress the IF, it does by some freak chance NOT have an IPS screen. I'll simply wait for the US release of that Acer V Nitro Black Edition and hope to god its not 1300+ -
-
I have a strong feeling that 99% laptop buyers have no idea about GDDR3, IPS etc and I wouldn't be surprised if large manufacturers were exploiting this. I'd also imagine companies size of Asus has a small army of business, pricing and market analysts working together with product development to maximize their profit margins.

It's on Amazon US now
-
Acer V Nitro is reported to have heat issues already.
-
I just talked to an Asus rep, and I was told that GL551JM-DH71 has IPS screen.
Believe or not...
Edit: Talked to another guy on phone 'cause I really need to double check... and I'm told this time that it does NOT have IPS screen. After I said that online rep told me it features IPS, the guy told me, "you could trust the online rep." LOLrehv likes this. -

With Amazon Prime you are able to get it on Saturday.
I'm sorry to hear that you are leaving today -

Which model should I get the one with the 1TB hard drive or the 256GBSSD? If I get the 256gb one i will be using a 1.5tb external hard drive, but its kinda inconvenient to carry that around.

I'm thinking about purchasing this from Amazon, I need a laptop for school, programming and gaming ASAP. What is anyones experience with purhcaes laptops from Amazon? Are they the best place to get it from or should I wait until Newegg or another site has them. Also I was thinking about getting the 3 year accideental protection plan included in it on Amazon from SquareTrade. I see a lot of bad reviews about service from Squaretrade. How do the accidental protection plans offered on Amazon compare in price and service to the ones offered by other sites like Newegg?
-
Edit: Just checked and it's still there -
Okkkkk screw me then... IS IT IPS? @_@
