I'm with you there. I'm running low on patience but I'm really reluctant about lugging a 17" beast around. So I'll most probably hang on until they give us more information on the g551. I wonder this - what's the hold up? And how likely is it that they revise the specs on an already announced machine? I'm thinking highly unlikely.. unless I recall correctly a floor rep said the specs are tentative on the showfloor in a video somewhere?.. but I'm still hoping that's the case for the possibility they go ahead with the GTX 970m. That would be a pleasant surprise.

a bit off topic, but i got a newsletter that Cjscope (the local Clevo retailer here in Taiwan) has added the GTX 970/980M model to its product list. The HX 550 (15 inch) basemadel (I7 4710 HQ, 8gig, 1TB 5400RPM, GTX 970M) goes for about 46 000 (about 1125 euro). Pretty affordable if you ask me. according to Notebookcheck, the gtx 970m 3gig can play all games at 1080p at full detail pretty much flawlessly.
Cjscope also allows several display choices including a 2K, 3K or 4K IPS display (racking up the price with about 5 to 8 000 NTD though)

The 15" inch one does seem like a good deal. It is the same price as the GL551. Is it IPS though? I don't really know how Acer laptops overall build quality compares to Asus though.

I have to make a decision by the the time the Acer comes out. I'm going to lose friends keeping their laptops to use for school longer than they would like lol. I prefer a 15" laptop because I'm reluctant to lug around a 17" beast like you say, so I have been waiting for the G551 to come out as well, but have we heard anything about it? I'm not totally opposed to buying a 17" one if the opportunity presents itself that the 17" models that are available at the time present a much better deal. These are the options I'm thinking about at this point.

    1) Wait until the G551 with an IPS screen comes out
    2) Wait for the Acer Nitro V15 to come out (if it has an IPS screen)
    3) Purchase the G751 if it's a good deal and better overall value compared to the Acer or G551 that has yet to come out

The screen is suppose to be IPS. Regarding build quality from what I've found its suppose to be well built compared to older and other current Acer model laptops. Also, the post you quoted from me only has links to the 17 inch versions. I just want you to be aware those are not the 15 inch ones. I will quote one of my earlier posts for information on the 15 inch ones

    Regarding your other post
You should get the V15 Nitro, If you can not wait for the G551. Trust me you will regret buying a 17 inch model. If you are having doubts about it now.

I still value performance, features, reliability, and affordability over convenience. If that Acer isn't IPS that's a dealbreaker. Also as far as Acer vs Asus laptops not familiar with them as much but from what I've read it seems a lot of Acer laptops have gotten poor reviews and the brand itself got an overall low rating.

Wait is this already in stock? I totally missed the fact that you mentioned that the 15 inch one is already available with a coupon through Acer, that makes a difference for me. If it's a higher build quality and decent I may go ahead and get that one, wish I can read some reviews about it somewhere first. There still is no news on when the G551 might even come out, I can't wait forever. Does NewEgg offer perks that buying it through Acer directly doesn't?

Sigh I was hoping to get the g551 i'm just so unsure about Acer's quality. Need to read the reviews. I really don't want to go through 47 pages of the Acer V nitro thread. Has anyone on here purchased the new Nitro? From what I see so far people are saying the screen is IPS but not of the IPS quality on the ROG models. It's more like TN quality.

The G751 is out of my price range so I've eliminated that as an option. Right now I'm leaning towards getting the Acer Nitro these are my options.

    1) Get the Acer Nitro V 15
    2) Wait for the G551
    3) Purchase a G750 if i can find a deal for 1100-1200.
    4) Purchase the GL551 if it's still a better option then the Acer Nitro.

1 or 2 are your only real options IMHO. If you are afraid of heating issues in the nitro, the gl551 kinda have the same, due to the single fan design from the g56.

Except that the heat isn't really an issue with the GL551, and even if it was, the G551 would be the same as well since its just a screen upgrade from the GL551. According to what I've seen from the nitro reviews, there isn't really much of an issue with heat as far as everyday use goes. It only gets hot when you're stress testing it. If you want to get a good laptop now and don't want to wait for the G551, The Acer is the best option as far as screen quality is concerned. Aside from that, its really jus preference between the two.

I was kinda saying that the nitro has the same heat issues that the GL551 has: none you'd notice with normal use... He's just trying to find some reason to wait for the G551... O/

Could someone with a GL551 put their ear close to the laptop and tell me if you could here a small humming noise? For some reason, mine is making this humming noise and do not know if this is a malfunction.

In terms of opening and handling without damaging anything, how hard would it be to add an sdd to the hdd Gl551 model, while maintaining the hdd? Would I lose the original Windows 8 license(pre installed) ? Would I void the warranty?

I replaced it with an SSD, and this is by the WASD keys. It produce this small pitch noise, but when I play a video mute or have audio wizard open, there is no noise. It's kind of annoying in a quiet room. I would open it to check but getting to the CPU and GPU is really weird with this laptop.

Ok the Asus G551JM is officially on the Asus global website - Notebooks & Ultrabooks - G551JM - ASUS

On a side note, the Asus G751 JM/JT/JY are also on the Asus global website which features a GTX 860/970/980m, respectively.

I think this is just more evidence ASUS is debating to only release the GL551 in the USA and not the G551. Betting people will still buy the GL551 and not wait for better competitors laptop or for ASUS to stop playing this game of cat and mouse.

This is unfortunately my take on it as well, I'm hoping someone has evidence to the contrary. How much are you willing to bet retailers will start the g551jm with an IPS / 860M 2gb / 256gb SSD at as much, if not more than the g751jt. I can't see justifying spending nearly 2k for the g551jm with the specs I want when the g751jt will probably fall within the same price range and offers that much more. I guess the tradeoff is mobility, and I too am reluctant to lug around a 17" beast but it seems like the best move at this point.

I can't speak for anyone else, but this is my case. I just can't go one day of classes without a notebook. I surely would love to have an ips screen, but as I can't wait any longer, I'm probably buying the Gl551 tomorrow. I haven't decided if it's going to be the SSD or HDD version, though.

Let's not put this way :p
I appreciate the suggestion and I've looked into it. It's just that I've had Asus products for a long time, while I've never had any interaction with Acer products, hence my preference.

About doing the upgrade myself, I asked this question a few pages before but there was no answer. Is it too complicated? Would it void the warranty? Would I lose the original Windows license?
(some people say the Gl551 isn't that easy to open)

Tough to say. Anything that requires you to remove more than the back panel can void your warranty... If you plan on replacing the RAM and the HDD it should be fine (although I don't know and don't have access right now to a back panel image). The drive caddy shouldn't give you much trouble either if you're planning on adding it there. And you won't lose windows unless you change the MB.

I would be a little concerned about running out of space on the 256 ssd, but you would have to make that call. That's the reason we got the HD. If we want to we can work on installing the ssd later but for now all is well.

What I mean, besides the risk of voiding the warranty, which I'd have to evaluate, is that the OS would be installed in the HDD. When I installed the SSD, it would be more beneficial to have the OS in it instead.
I understand that buying the hdd model and upgrading in the future is the best option financially. I guess I'm just looking for an excuse to buy the SSD model, since the hdd one isn't readily available on Amazon today...

The procedure you're looking for is called "Cloning HDD to SSD", first Google hits already point to that. But if you're unsure and have the extra bucks to get it preinstalled... Be my guest. Its not a savvy thing, but we never wanna risk damaging our precious babies, right? ;)

Got you I missed the fact that the G551JK was on the global one and the GL551 is on the US site, now I see what you are saying about the JK not being offered in the US, sucks.

I'm still heavily leaning toward getting the Acer Nitro V at this point, will probably wait a few more days before I decide. I feel like I'm just waiting for nothing for the G551, I think it's really stupid that Asus hasn't even told us an approximate release date. I went to best buy this weekend to look at laptop screen sizes side by side this weekend so I can have a better comparison as far as my willingness to get a 17" or not. The Y50 was there as well as the Asus G750. That G750 is a massive laptop I was surprised how big it is even for a 17 inch, my work 17 inch laptop is not as bulky as it. I'm certain now I do not want a 17" inch to haul around, while the screen size is nice, I do plan on buying a desktop for home at some point, and I always can hook my laptop up to an external monitor, so even though it will be my primary machine at home for the time being, it's more so for convenience and travel.

I wouldn't expect anything from the G551 anymore. If it does stay with the 860m its gonna be DOA like the g550. Not a good year for Asus... List me up for the Broadwell - 9xxM refresh...

i've asked around a bit with suppliers (asus & CJscope) about when the 860M models might get replaced with the 900M counterparts respectively. They both basically told me that Nvidia lacks the production capacity to launch them this year. They estimate march next year for the remainder of the 900M series
