Well I went ahead and bought it without the Square trade warranty. I think I might have sometime to buy the warranty separately so if anyone has any experience with Square Trade let me know.

    1. It is already available in parts of Europe. Also, are you aware that you can do a Google search of pages based on a particular country?

    2. There are some simple reviews but I have not searched recently. It does seem that heating is not too much o a problem, but alas it does get hotter than anticipated - some frame stutter observed when running for prolonged periods at high-end graphical settings.

    3. JK and JM has the GTX850m and GTX860m GPU, respectively.

    thx for info

too bad for the stutter, guess it suits a one-fan construction. guess i can live with that but if it has wifi issues or anything else then thats too bad. guess no laptop is perfect. nitro v has wifi battery stutter and build quality issues

BTW, getting the N551JM is like having the G551JM but without the ROG design right? or is anything else different except the n being touchscreen

I believe the ROG will give you more storage capacity options for the SSD hard drive where the N551 is only limited to the 256GB SSD. The N551 also comes with the external subwoofer. Those are the differences I've noticed so far.

It's funny, but the GL551JM is actually labeled internally as G551JM.

Guys, I'm overall satisfied with my GL551JM but I'm facing an issue and I'd like your opinion on how to proceed.
I've noticed that sometimes, randomly, my screen gets a blueish tone. Then, after some time, returns to a warmer tone.
Is it normal? Could it be due to some automatic setting that changes color temperature based on content? (seems unlikely)
    How should I proceed?

Do you think it is "normal" for a screen to do that? Of course it's not. Email tech support and ask them what the problem could be. :)

G75, G55 & G46 Gaming Notebooks Before tech support you should go to the ROG Forum to the one for G551 G751 etc. There are some really sharp guys there otherwise good luck with Asus Tech Support.

They are upgrading there website so off and on the forums are available

So the GL551JM is the same? Interesting. None of them offer the IPS display that I'm seeing so far. I'm going to have to wait, unless I'm missing something.

Are you experiencing the problem with the laptop connected with the power adaptor?

Interesting. I find my IPS display does that as I use it not connected to power but don't experience that when it is connected. Could it be your battery/power settings? Is it on Performance, power saver, or balanced or any power settings equivalent to them? That might be why, as well. If not, I would assume it's a faulty screen and have it replaced through warranty as soon as possible.

I tried Asus ROG forum and I believe they solved my problem. Apparently, there's a pre installed software called ASUS Splendid, which handles color temperature.
I'm going to uninstall it and keep an eye on its behavior but it might just be it.

Thank you for your help, guys !

    - Y50 with ips replacement screen? (double fan + better sound)

    - Asus g551jm (Ips screen)

Do you have any keyboard preference? I read some ppl didn't like the y50 KB. If you can, go to best buy, they have it on display :) (it's the touch screen version though)

I purchased the Acer V Nitro 15" laptop, and apparently it has some wifi issues and low battery life. I may have to return it so I'm back to square one of no good options. At this point I'm back down to the GL551 since the G551 seems to not exist for the US or not coming out anytime soon. I know most people on here were waiting for the G551. Has anybody here purchased the GL551? If so what's your overall experience of it, and how does it compare to the new Acer Nitro series that was just released. I assume for starters the GL551 is probably not as thin and doesn't have an IPS screen (although the IPS screen on the Acer Nitro isn't the greatest one anyway).

The G551JM seems to be available on Amazon, I believe. You can get a fairly modestly spec'd G551 shipped from Canada which I plan on doing in the next few months if there isn't an official G551 release in the US. This one actually has an IPS display as well but it's listed for almost $1400US which is a bit over my budget at this moment. And the GL551 and the G551 might have the same form factor if I'm not mistaken.

My space key on the GL551 became kinda noisy. Can it be popped out for me to investigate the origin of the noise?

The latching on the space bar is usually a little more elaborate and the keys are not really designed to be removable. Have you talked to your reseller?

Btw the Asus G551JM-DM052H and DM053H has been launched in Malaysia with Ips Displays. The only difference being the amount of ram and Vram.

Even though Nvidia has mentioned that it will carry either type of VRAM but most likely it will be DDR3 due to weak GPU performance.

Still the GDDR5 does help quite a lot. If you compare the benches of the MSI GE70 or the Acer V3 772G with GTX850M and GDDR5 to notebooks like Asus N750 or N550 with 850M and DDR3 you see a difference of roughly 20 to 30 percent. With GDDR5 the 850M gets really close to the 860M. Without the gap is rather big.

GDDR5 does use more power though and increases motherboard costs so you can see why a lot of companies stick with DDR3.
