If it's G551JW that you are asking, then it does not have M.2 support.
This system comes with two (2) drive bays, one of them is standard SATA and the other is half-sized mSATA.

Here's webpage with lots of images for your reference.

ASUS did not make any G551 with M.2 support.

The G551/GL551 still uses the same chassis as the N56VZ that we reviewed back in 2012:

It has only one 2.5" SATA slot and never have M.2. some 15.6" Asus models might looks like it has a M.2 SSD but it's not. it's a Asus proprietary SSD that looks like M.2 but the pin layouts are completely different.

Unfortunately not, but I would take 256GB + ODD-to-HDD upgrade as most critical configuration since ODD is less likely to be used.
But if ODD is a must and is not constantly required, perhaps you can use an external USB ODD to solve this issue.

Yes, the SSD works just like any other storage drive, you can use it as OS or data storage and it just depends on how you manage your drives.

I would really appreciate if somebody with 960m GPU laptop could check whether mini-DisplayPort attached to nvidia gpu or intel gpu.
To check, laptop needs to be connected to external monitor via displayport. Open nvidia control panel->physX settings.
Check attached screenshot. My MSI laptop has miniDP attached to Intel GPU :(

It is wiring issue on the PCB.
This means ASUS did not pull the signal from the GPU directly but IGD instead.

Yes only the 17 inch series direct connect the display to the dGPU.

If this is an issue, then exchange it with vendor.
