I've noticed that in this website they are saying the release date that the Enter key format is different from that one found on computex videos. I don't know why.
-
I almost feel like this is mmorpg.com and we're hyping up some new game that will come out and not live up to expectations ;-)

I guess it's the P34G V2 for me then...
Asus... we'll talk in 2-3 years. : (dakuhonoo likes this. -
Perhaps there was some major fault in design or contractor supply, price.. or something. Anyway, I am looking elsewhere as well.Iäve never been queuing iTelephone or too loyal to any brand.
On the other-hand, if that announcement was aimed to create hype among laptop nerds, it seems to be working

It's perfectly normal to have 3-6 months gap between device being shown in a trade show and being available.
No reason to complain since release date has not been announced yet. -
We are waiting for this?!

Why they say " g551 jm "
It look more esthétic than the g551 from the computex.moske07 likes this. -
Seems to be around 880-1000€ including taxes almost everywhere (EEC). Also, 30.8 seems to be THE DATE in eastern Europe. So, cheaper more portable version of G750JM (specs-wise).

ASUS G551JM-DM079H Notebook paraméterei
Found this, seems that the price for this particular model will be 980€ -
Excactly the model I'd like to get.
asus-shop.sk has smaller capacity ones with three different RAM options:
ASUS G551JM 15.6 FHD/ i7-4710/ DVD/ 750GB + 8GB/ 8GB/ Win 8.1
Cena: 888,00 €
ASUS G551JM 15.6 FHD/ i7-4710/ DVD/ 750GB + 8GB/ 12GB/ Win 8.1
Cena: 928,00 €
ASUS G551JM 15.6 FHD/ i7-4710/ DVD/ 750GB + 8GB/ 16GB/ Win 8.1
Cena: 968,00 €

We dont need to buy a laptop with a lot of RAM. I can get a better ram for more cheaper.
With the conversion, its around 1300$ CAD. -
I have a slightly impression that the pictures of the g551jm all over the place on Europe websites are from the g751 itself. Looking at computex videos they differ regarding the Enter key format. The g751 has a rectangular format while the g551 has a more squared format. I prefer the aesthetic of the g751 though.

Trade shows can have prototype models but yes it would not surprise me, look at keyboard to screen ratios to get a judge.

I hope they release a model with an SSD pre-installed in America...
-
Those are damn good prices. I will buy the cheapest model with 1080p IPS and then upgrade the SSD/RAM myself. Will also replace the optical drive with an extra HDD caddy.
Most places list 2 weeks lead time in East Europe. One place even lists it as "In Stock", though that's clearly BS Asus G551JM-DM084H od 844,86 ⬠- Heureka.sk -
Looks good... Let's see if they have stock by the end of September.

Will be interesting to see the US prices as those are some pretty good ones for the EU.

well, those seem to be prices in Slovakia. if the rest of the Eu will have the same prices remains to be seen. I do hope so, but companies have the habit of squeezing out the highest price acceptable in different countries ...
-
In Finland we usually have 10-20% higher price than in Eastern Europe. Slightly hopeful of getting it just under 1k. Hope we see 1Tb version here.
-
I'm pretty sure those laptops listed as the 551 are not, they look exactly like the G56JK I just purchased and received from Newegg....
-
Well the ROG forums have set up a forum for these new G machines G771, G751, G551 and GX550 Gaming Notebooks
-
That's a good sign.
-
Well, where I live (land of cuckoo clocks and chocolate) electronics prices are probably the cheapest in Europe, so I should be ok at least.
Woo, definitely a good sign!
-
Looks like it's the GL551 and we'll be seeing more about it next week. ASUS G-Series ROG Gaming Laptops - GL551 Series
They also posted about it on their Facebook page -
Wait...unless I'm misunderstanding things this seems like bad news. Why is the 860M listed as using DDR3 not DDR5? The whole reason I was waiting is I heard the currently model has an 850M that uses DDR3 that is quite a bit slower than the DDR5 model, and this model was announced originally as having DDR5...
-
I think that's a typo. I've never seen anything higher than x50M with ddr3 memory
-
Yeah, I heard it wasn't even available without DDR5, easy mistake to make I guess when typing it up?
Also searching for those model numbers I'm seeing listings on Amazon and other sites already, looks like it's slated to release at the end of September potentially: http://www.amazon.com/Asus-GL551JM-DH71-ASUS-15-6-Inch-Laptop/dp/B00MMMMMX2
The price seems great and a bit lower than I expected. But also it has no SSD, which makes me sad. I really wanted to just be able to buy something and use it without screwing around with it. -
Wow, that's way cheaper than I thought... How is it $200 cheaper than the G550JK and better in every way? Except thickness. 1.3in? They could have done better than that...
Edit: and it has an Iris Pro CPU? Something isn't right about the price and/or specs -
ASUS doesn't seem to do a very good job spreading accurate information, but here's another similar listing: ASUS GL551JM DH71 15.6" Full HD Gaming Laptop | CUKUSA.com
I heard the G550JK was barely available and quickly discontinued, they probably found cheaper/more efficient methods of manufacturing. It only recently arrived and this one is already hot on its heels so they've probably been planning this for a while. The same thing happened with their Ultrabook line the UX303 series, they're far cheaper (and better) than the previous year for TONS less money. -
I just pre-ordered it on Amazon. May cancel but based on how the supply/timing issues line up for a lot of ASUS laptops I wanted to be in line.
-

The 860m can't come with ddr3. It's either 850m with ddr3 or 860m gddr5. Either way it's a typo.
-
That's good news, I'm pretty certain they already announced the higher end model is the 860M so I should be good.
-
Yea the Asus website shows that model with the 860m. However there is no mention of an IPS display anywhere. Hopefully they don't compromise on the display. It doesn't have to be IPS I suppose but I hope it's at least decent. The reason I returned my Y50 was because of the awful display. As long as its good I'm happy. It doesn't have to be *amazing*, just good.
-
Says IPS on this info plate thingy.
-
Sorry I was talking about the GL551 that just popped up on Amazon and Asus website. That one has no mention of IPS. The G551 at Computex does have IPS though. I'm not sure if these are the same or if they changed some things and called it the GL551 last minute
-
As awesome as this news is, kind of "meh" now that the new nVidia 900 series is being announced in September... so here's hoping for a refresh is a few months time. If this would have released a month ago I probably would have pulled the trigger.
-
I doubt 900 series will have anything to add in terms of GTX860M (Maxwell), just re-branding upcoming 870/880M Maxwell versions to avoid confusion & streamline marketing. Just my penny.....
@elkniwcire btw, that amazon ad doesn't even disclose GPU in specs so... -
Yea there is no GPU in the specs but the Asus website lists this exact same model number as having a 860m. I put in the preorder just in case.
http://www.asus.com/us/site/g-series/GL551/ -
I really doubt asus made a 1.3 inch thick ROG laptop with no gpu lol.
-
Ha haa! That's excactly what I meant... no seriously, this looks likely to be my next laptop.. perhaps I might wait that GDDR3 "typo" fixed & some reviews to pop-up first.
-
I've been following this thread since June. Hopefully someone who saw it at PAX can put some info on the web. PCgamer apparently has one they'll be giving away next week, which makes me think there will be an official announcement at IFA on the 3rd.
-
They better have IPS..
The G56JK I just purchased came with the same screen as the Y50... Makes me wonder if that is the screen they are using on the gl's? -
Oh gawd.... PLEASE NO. The screen on the Y50 (non 4k version) isn't just below average, it's terrible. It's the reason I returned it. I thought I could get past it but it just eats at you as you slowly start to notice more and more things that look poorly. The 860m is just cursed with an awful display so you never really get to the graphics it can produce. Ist bad.
Edit: a quick google shows the G56jk comes with an IPS display so I'm confused. The only version of the Y50 that is IPS is the 4k version. The 1080p version uses a terrible TN panel. Are you saying your display is good or bad? -
The eternal circle of buying PC equipment.
"I want this laptop, but it's not out yet."
"Ooooh, new GPU, I'll wait for that."
"Awesome, new laptop with the new GPU! Coming soon."
"Hmm, seems like a new CPU is right around the corner. I must have it."
*Repeat*
Is the 900 series such a big difference?dakuhonoo and QuaintNotions like this. -
This indeed, plus forums saturated with "should I buy or wait" junk. Where the most obvious answer is you buy when you need it, and in any other situation you just don't. Bloody simple.
In my case, games I'd like to play are not out just yet so I don't really need new lappy before October. -
Same here. I would have been so satisfied with the FHD Y50 if it weren't for the screen. The 4k version was better but still had issues. I'm not worried about this screen though. Asus typically has decent panels in their laptops(except the cheapo Vivobooks). The panel in Computex has decent viewing angles so I know it's not the same as the Y50. I really think the GL551 and the G551 are one in the same. Maybe GL551 will be FHD and G551 will cover the 4k option they disclosed. If Amazon's price sticks, that model is a steal. Assuming of course the GPU doesn't mysteriously change to an 850M which was also an option advertised at Computex. I think we'll all know more after next week's show.
-
Yep already started that circle by waiting on this one but this is where I draw the line. This has everything i wanted before I knew about any other GPUs
-
This GL551 design does not look good. I hate that concave front side view along with this 1.3'' thickness. Hopefully they will release the G551 that was advertised earlier.
-
The first g551 was just a prototype I think
... The quality build was not exceptional. -
Well if they can squeeze the same performance/TDP of the 970M/980M as the 860M/850M then there is a *chance* they could have a 970M in these. But in terms of putting in a 960M, don't know... better than the 860M, probably not as good as the 870M.
My comment was not to sway anyone away, nor say that this is a bad machine, far from it. Reading my comments in this thread (and the Maxwell threads in the Gaming section) I was fully committed to buying this when the ASUS rep said these would release at the end of July or early August. Unfortunately due to personal financial issues that occurred at the end of July/early August, my laptop budget went goodbye. If I had the funds, I would wait for the announcement from nVidia in September, judge if the wait is worth it, and if not buy this laptop.
Essentially, I jumped camp from "not gon'na wait anymore the 860M is awesome as is" to "not gon'na buy an 860M when the 970M is right around the corner." -
I think 1.3" is a typo. Everywhere else is 1.1".
