If you care at all about gaming, then no.. The 850M is about 60% of the 860M is in terms of performance. And no you won't be able to OC the 850M to match the 860M performance (maybe very close but the 860M still smokes it with DDR5)
-
Welps, I was going to grab a Y50 for a gaming machine that can actually fit inside my backpack for work travel (Airplane friendly, too) but now with this news and I much prefer Asus. .I'm a huge Asus fanboy. Looks like i'll have to hold off until this releases.. But I was hoping for a 1080p screen on the GX500 and not this dumb 4k crap.. So sick of this 4k panel junk.. I don't need my battery life to suffer because of 4k panels and I absolutely hate interpololation when running a 4k screen at 1080p for gaming. Besides, I bet the 4k panel is locked at 48hz too..

Been lurking this thread for a while. Just got a MSI GT70 Dominator - 895...knew it would be heavy/big, but the fan noise/heat are something that are making me consider going asus route (had an old G75VW few years back, loved it aside from weight).
Hoping to hear more on the g551 soon - if it's any consolation, Amazon just ran out of stock for their g550's this morning. Was thinking of ordering this one until i refreshed the page and it was no longer listed. -
Is there any chance the G551 will come in time for a student to grab it before school starts? (Late August for me) I think I remember the Asus representative saying that the laptop would be released some time "Late July or early August", but the lack of any information from Asus in the past 2 months is kinda disturbing to me :/
-
Oh. My. God.
How the hell have I not seen or heard of this laptop before? I've literally been Googling my off for alternatives to the ASUS G550JK but with an 860M and all the time this was there evading my Google-Fu?
This is allI want in a laptop... amazing looks, awesome keyboard (if its comparable to the JK which is like putty to my fingers), and a full fat Maxwell 860M.
Only question is if if I will get the 1080p or the 4k. If they re both IPS it will be a tough choice... tempted with the 4k but still not formed a definitive opinion of how they downscale to 1080p. Need to see it with my own eyes and sadly my local store has no 4k screens to test.
Anyway... TAKE MY MONEY DAMN YOU! NOWWWWWW! This is my next laptop. Fact. -
I was told this morning from Canada Computers that the G551 would be coming sometime in November.
-
Hopefully that's not true and it comes earlier; like many others I'm trying to get this as my back to school laptop. D:
-
Yeah I was hoping the same thing but after hearing that, I might just have to look at other options =/
-
Does this laptop have internal space for an SSD and a HD, or do You have to use the optical slot for an extra HD?
I would rather wait 2-3 months than buy a laptop I'm not happy with that I want to keep for 2-3 years. -
I agree. I just wish ASUS would put out some ETA on the G551 so that we know approximately how long the wait is. I have a feeling they'll do a silent release type thing for it since not many media sources covered the G551 at Computex; most of them covered the GX500 mainly. -
Wait...what's wrong with the 4k screen? Sorry I'm new to this.
-
Nothing wrong with 4k as long as when it downscales to 1080p it looks decent. Most of the time non-native resolutions looks fuzzy and this would detract pretty seriously if you were planning on doing any gaming on the laptop.

If you tried to game in 4K you'd get really low FPS because of all the extra pixels you're asking the GPU to render. -
fwiw, I asked an Asus-NA rep about the G551 and he didn't even know it existed. From my experience, they usually know about these things in advance. He mentioned it might not make it to the US
-
I read online the other day that a reviewer had a 4k screen and he said it did look a little fuzzy when downscaled to 1080p. Seems to go against the currently often-quoted saying that it "downscales perfectly as it's divides exactly by 4x" which I see plastered all over forums at the moment.
-
That's so strange, they've cutoff the G550JK by putting out so few, and then they don't bring the G551 over? I emailed someone from xotic about the shortage of G550JKs and they said it is because ASUS made so few and they are waiting for info on the new model, so maybe that's some hope for it coming stateside?
-
That is what i always see, people see is perfect scaling, but i have not seen an evidence of that yet, and it would not be so hard to test, just someone with a 4K inch laptop and a decente reflex camera making photos both in 1080p and 4K
-
I talked to an Asus rep a couple weeks ago too. He mentioned that that was the laptop he was hoping to get--however, he had no idea when it was going to come out.
-
Yeah. I'm done waiting for Asus to finish jerking off in a cup. I'm going with the MSI GE60 Apache Pro 003, or whatever. Not as sexy, a little bigger but guess what, you can buy it RIGHT NOW. amazing. Same reason i stopped buying their motherboards, company drives me in crazy.
-
For me, the extra half inch in height, cooling issues, and build quality are enough to wait for.
-
By the time asus releases this laptop, other brands would have better choice.maybe next year...
I'm tired of waiting for a new reliable 15' laptop from asus.Demike likes this. -
A XoticPC Representative commented on their YouTube channel stating that the successor to the G550JK will indeed be the G551. However, Asus has not yet determined a date for it's release, although it appears (from another comment) that the release will be sometime in September. Same representative also mentioned that there is currently no news on GX500.
Interesting to see what implications the delay to the G551 will have with Broadwell and Second Generation Maxwell announcements around the corner.... Hopefully the G551 gets released with the updated chips! That I would be willing to wait for. (Although Broadwell seems incredibly unlikely...)

It depends how round the corner the gpu and cpu announcements are but the 850/860 class gpus seem pretty set for now as far as I see.

What, none of their current laptops are reliable?
Common sense dictates that the G551 is not gong to have Broadwell. -
Comparing with other brands 15 inches laptops?
No. -
someone said pages ago its coming on the 20th of august in europe.
-
And you are going to qualify this information with evidence from...?
Oh wait look, ASUS are the most reliable... Computer Manufacturers Ranked: How to Pick a Laptop That Won't Fail
So, erm, yeah. -
According to ASUS the N551 hits in early November. Considering the G550JK didn't come out until months after the N550JK I'm not sure we can expect the G551 in August/September...
Source: I browse this forum (and many others) regularly although I have already purchased my personal laptop. However, I head the graphic design department at Uni and contacted Asus regarding the release of the N551 series. This is their response. : SuggestAShunsai likes this. -
Does anyone know for sure if we'll get the G551 in the US in 1080p? If this is only available in 4K I'm not even going to bother waiting for it.
-
"The display is again of type IPS, but in this case, in addition to the 4 k Panel, ASUS has made available two variants cheaper HD and Full HD"

Dude,you totally miss my point.
I'm fan of asus and I own one since 2010 and its performing well.
I want a """15 inches'""" laptop with maxwell GDDR5 and other good specs.asus still didn't provide this kind of product yet while other brands already did.
So my patience is coming to an end and I may end up buying other brand.
Have a nice day. -
The study they mention is from 2009, it has been a while....a loot of things can change in quality and realiability in 5 years
-
Aye, most notably the quality and reliability has been dropping among all brands, especially lenovo and toshiba has taken a hit on quality to my experience. But asus as well, about every asus laptop I've had last 4 years has some minor manufacturing issues. Slightly skewed keys on keyboard, not perfectly alligned ports and such details.
-
I had 2 ASUS notebooks before. First one was perfect and only died after 3 or so years due to some overheating problems (2008-ish notebook). Then the other one(2012) came right out of the box with a MB issue, which was quickly returned... still, I didn't expect to see that. Which is why I need a notebook with good international warranty, which almost forces me to purchase from Asus, because Lenovo and gigabyte have pretty shady to non-existant international warranty here. Since rumors say the G551 is getting released in november, I'm pretty much out of options since I'm going to the US late september : ( (yes, please don't say MBP - I'm against super overpriced hardware )
-
Oh, just found this thread & heard about G551. If reviews are positive this might very well be my next laptop. On my wish list is an easy access to clean the fan and reasonably priced HD/1TB combination.
Unlike many others posting here, I am not in a hurry with this since there's no interesting games (Far Cry 4, GTA V, Dragon Age...) coming out before October/November -
The long wait is making buying the g550jk tempting
-
Sure, go for it and then let us know how happy you are in a few of months with your 850M DDR3.
-
The g550jk is everything I needed in a laptop in terms of design. Is very sleek, but I can't live playing latest games on low-medium settings. Either I wait for the g551 or I will go with the latest release MSI Gt72. If so I'll certainly buy the model with a 870m. The only downside for me with msi is that it is 17.3".

I just got this from ASUS website!! I hope this can bring us good news. Brace yourselves!!
"Dear Valued Customer,
ASUS is dedicated to provide the best products and greatest service to our users over the past few decades. In order to improve our website quality, please be informed that we are undergoing scheduled software and hardware update from Saturday 16th August until Monday 18th August. During this period, ASUS official site ( ASUS) will be temporarily unavailable. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused during this period. Thank you so much for your patience and continued support." -

It sounds like they are doing hardware maintenance on their servers more than anything. That's a pretty lengthy down time though, usually you have a backup system that can handle normal load while you upgrade the system and then test it.
-
Yeah, I didn't look it that way. Anyways we should receive at least a release date by the end of August. Otherwise I'll start thinking ASUS don't want my money =p
-
Seriously though....
I WILL BE ABLE TO WAIT THIS OUT
Haha by the time the G551 comes out it'll probably be time to wait for another laptop with a Broadwell chip.Demike likes this. -
I'm tired of looking at the same computex photos and videos. I need news!

So much for late July early august release date lol
-
Yeah...seriously though...I'm not sure how you underestimate your own product's release date by that much.
-
Riding with ROG.. sorry Asus lost my money
-
Everyday I log on and hope to see a new post, every day I see one, and every day... It's not a release date.
So, I'm basically inflicting pain to all of you, sorry guys you paid for Asus...
Anyway, isn't there a way to put a little pressure on Asus in order for them to reach out for a release date ? Some companies care dearly about their twitter feeds and Facebook Page, maybe with a concerted action ? -
According to this site the Asus g551 will be available 21 October.

I had hopes that it will be sooner than that :/ -

Every region will get it at different times. Shops like to put up random dates some times.

That's true cuz I looked at Asus website and yet nothing is confirmed. I am wondering if they will say the release date for it a month before it hits stores here in North America.
