Wow...1627MHz is as fast as I've ever seen a mobile part run! Oh wait...is that being overclocked though? I was momentarily excited that that might be the default speed.

    the BB model comes w/ 8GB Ram(instead of 12), 1TB HDD (no ssd or sshd?), and a 128bus (2gb) 560gtx on the g74?

Nothing unexpected about that, the g73sw at best buy is the exact same in terms of gimping. The 460m at BB is also 128 bit with only 1GB of vram. This must be the same GPU that is going to be in the g53sx, that is an official no go for me unless they throw in that 3 or 1.5 GB vram...

Huh, I didn't realize the Best Buy models had a worse GPU. Well, nice that you're getting something extra for the extra money :)

Just called my local best buy (Orlando area) and after giving them the best buy model number and a little patience and explanation, they found it in their system. I asked what their ETA was to get them to the store and they said that they already had 3 in stock and if I wanted to put one on hold. I asked for the price and they said $1299!
I can't put one on hold because my Gateway FX is in for repair right now and have to wait.
So, call your local best buy and see if they have any in stock.
If anyone get's one, let's get some specs and benchmarks going.

Come on Guinea Pigs, grab your bestbuy versions now so we can check if they aren't watered down gpu like the HD 5870 from JH models.

Bestbuy no longer has a restocking fee so feel free to buy and return if you don't like it.

Thought it was already pretty much confirmed that the BB model will have gimped 560m? Since it's the 128bit bus again, just with 2gb of vram vs 1 the 73SW had.

    Oh wait...4GB x 3...for some reason I thought they were doing 4 x 2 and 2 x 2.

Hmm....do you think I could drop in a 4GB Micron/Crucial and get it to successfully dual channel? Or would it be better to get two x 4GB sticks? (Or just pull one...since it's not like I need 12GB anyway.)

I'm annoyed when they include RAM configurations like this...although at least with the G74 it's all easily accessible, and comes with so much I could even toss a stick!

hmmm.....dat is going to be an issue..asus would have thought of it the other way round ie it being easier to upgrade and all, so they put it this way...but even with that extra 4gb intact, wont the remaining two 4gb slots work in dual channel?..the left out 4gb can work in single channel with its corresponding pair being empty(that's what I read after you told me about this concept)

Yeah, apparently (I suspect there may still be a performance hit in the dual channel part of it, but don't know one way or the other).

In a way it doesn't matter, since I *think* dual channel right now doesn't provide all that much more performance? But still, it's such a cheap easy thing to do to boost it...

I'll probably just buy two stick from Crucial and have 16GB :-D

Bear in mind...I only use about 60% of my 4GB (although most of the rest gets used for cache).

Can anyone tell me how much difference is there in the benchmark tests b/w the G74SX and the G53SW-A1/G73SW-A1 and is that much difference significant?

[Edit]: Also I want to know how much size difference is there b/w G74SX and G53SW? I have heard that the G74SX has gone slimmer..Portability is the only issue because of which I'm not going for a 17 inch screen..so need some advice on those lines if I had to select b/w G53SW (15 inch) and G74SX(17 inch)..Portability is a very big concern for me..

I just want to be clear about something...

Were these improvements over your stock settings just due to the memory change (HyperX 1600)? It seems to be a "larger" improvement than I expected. Maybe I am misinterpreting the data.

Nevermind, I see you were playing with the clocks. This was confusing to me at first - sorry.

Man, hitting 941mhz on the core, I guess while the 560m stock is literally the same as a 460m with a 100mhz higher core clock performance wise. The 116 architecture definitely helps it run cool while obtaining over-clocks that I definitely do not see a 460m ever reaching.

Nice work Ken, also if you don't mind, can you check for throttling? I know that a review unit G74 showed throttling, but curious if anything has changed for the final. If not, asus will have more work to do :p.

Ken, can you please post some in game video ( Battlefield Bad Company 2, Crysis 2, Dirt 2 and 3, Far Cry, Black Ops ... ) with the GPU overlock and stable, and run the games at the ultra settings to show us what the G74sx is really capable to do in games, so we can compare with the HD 6970M, and don't forget the temps :) Thanks a lot

Anyone able to confirm the BB model (G74SX-BBK7) screen resolution yet? And did they pull the blu-ray player again? The pic on the website has the blu-ray logo, but specs leave out blu-ray player.

Thanks a lot Ken. Another thing, I saw that you did the 3D Marks Benchmarks and stuff with the olds drivers. The new ones are the 275.33 WHQL, and they are optimized for the GTX 560M. So can you do the previous benchmarks whith this drivers, and then overlock the GPU like you did, and show us what the laptop can do in game. Thanks for the job you do ;)

I take back whatever I said about that the G74 is ugly. It is not. It looks beautiful and at the same time professional. I love the big panel on the back that let you access all the upgradable parts for easy switch.

Very nice video Ken. One question though. You (or that guy talking in the video lol) said that it is a bit noisier than G73, which one is the most noisiest between G74 and GT780R? Thanks :)

@Ken, if you could include a short clip of the fan noise while benchmarking the next game, that would be gr8 :) (as in the GT780R video)
