for arrrow and just a ram module placed in a clearer space I won't even consider the trouble...
what really make the thing worthy is incredibly better CPU and basically same GPu with way better drivers and lower temps...
That's what I would swap mine for...

-
Well, CPU would be the same if it was purchased that recently, and of course the older model runs Nvidia's newest drivers unmodified too.
EDIT: OOOOOH, I see, you're probably comparing it to the JH model with an AMD 5870. I was thinking s/he probably has an SW model, but of course I don't know. -
Yea, I got the SW (sorry, should have mentioned) - and it's shipped with the 2630qm, same as on the g74. Altho I was REALLY pessimistic about the gtx 460, it actually performs well over my expectations ( and requirements ). I played Crysis 2 in 1920x1080 with linux running in the background in vmware doing some light lifting. It never choked a single frame.
So, after reading your replies - I'm pretty much decided to not returning the g73sw. Thanks for helping me out guys -
Wow, that's nice! That certainly does it for me (and personally I don't use AA anyway, which saves fill rate or whatever).
-
uh tjcrs, i hope you picked up your free xbox w/ that purchase, otherwise i return it and pick up a free xbox (other choice is 10% off, students only deal)
im waiting for the g74, then maybe sell the xbox or see if it stacks w/ the 10% off -
I have 3 or 4 xbox'es lying around and a couple ps3's.... who can play fps'es on these things ???
I use my laptop to fill downtime at work, I'm a fireman, I can't be dragging an xbox to work. G73 is acceptable everywhere however

Guys, I currently have a review unit of the G74 on my desk and I have some issues with drivers.
Latest drivers I could get on are 268.37 . Anything passed that won't work, including 270.61 , 275.27 or 275.33 . I've tried several of the options available here with the modded infs and couldn't install any of them.
I feel like results are affected by the old drivers. For instance, I got 37.23 points in OpenGL test in Cinebench 11.5, while I saw older G73SWs with better scores and this oen has better graphics.
So, could anyone help me with an advice here on a combo driver + modded inf that could work on the GTC 560M found on this Asus ?
Also, I have some problems with 3D Vision (there's a warning, test unit model red message displayed on the screen and 3D is really messed up in games or converted 2D movies - works fine on some native 3D demos I downloaded from Nvidia's site, but only on those).
Gaming systems are not really my domain so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
----
Edit: Got help with the drivers, now have 275.33 installed. Still haven't figured out the 3D Vision part. COuld ti require a BIOS Upgrade? Latest release available on Asus's site can't be flashed though on this unit
PS: If you have any specific questions about this laptop or want any specific benchmark results, pls let me know -
while I cannot help with your question I can go ahead with mines...
Once you solved it you can tell us how the keyboard feels (lag this time too?), how temps are and how good the screen is!
Then more than bench I would like to see games on it, like results with the witcher 2...
That would be better than any bench to me :3 -
-
it is the G53sx that has 128 bit since it has 2 gb of vram. -
checked it, it has 192 bit
@johnny I really like the screen but I can't say if it's any different from what you had before on G73s as i haven't tested those. Heats above the arrow keys, next to Enter and Backspace. As for that game, i don't actually have it, but I will try crysis 2, need for speed and black ops. Will post results soon -
-
560 gets that much hotter than the 460 ?
-
But that just means the GPU is too new, and Nvidia's next release will support it, right? (I hope?) -
Are there any posted 560M (192-bit) OC'ed benchmarks?
-
@ringwraith
Which coreclock has the GPU? Easy watchable with GPUz. -
I have a question about the G50-70 series with blu-ray players for previous owners.
I'm leaning away from blu-ray right now cause i heard that you have to purchase a software for playback if you want proper audio etc. Does Asus come with a non-trial, full version blu-ray player software? I'm thinking if it did so in the past, it would do it for g53sx and the g74sx. If not, i'm thinking i'll save 50bucks and just get a regular dvd drive.
Thanks in advance. -
Mine came with PowerDVD 9.
-
VLC cannot play Blu Ray discs?
-
-
Is G74SX worth a buy as compared to G53SW considering that most of the games don't require more than 1-1.5g of vram and of course 12g ram is way too much than required?
And is G53SW really better than G53SX?
@ringwraith: please also let me know your reviews regarding G74SX as compared to G53SW-A1 after you have a good sneak-peek into the G74
P.S: For me, smaller screen size ain't an issue. -
-
Personally I wouldn't buy a notebook in 2011 without Blu Ray. -
-
mmm thanks, looking forward to those games benchs :3
About the heats... mmm maybe it's normal since there is no more keyboard to dissipate it? (g73jh around that place is WARM as well, yet, it is not hot...) -
desktopsheavyonlap - blurays have the movie file located in the BDMV/Stream directory . Most will have one large m2ts file as the movie . You can open it using most of the well known free video players GOM , Splash , VLC , KMPlayer , etc. You will have all the audio streams , subtitles streams etc. , and the same bluray high quality You won't get the bluray menu screen - but this is no big deal . I personally have found Splash the best . Some have the movie split into many smaller m2ts files . There are ways to get around this , if needed .

At 1:57min, the Asus rep says it'll be launching around Q3 or Q4, which, to me, means January or December at the earliest. Considering the "-3DE" versions of 53sx and 74sx will be out next months, it'll be a very different hardware setup for the <layer id='google-toolbar-hilite-3' style='background-color: Cyan; color: black;'>naked</layer> <layer id='google-toolbar-hilite-4' style='background-color: Fuchsia; color: black;'>eye</layer> 3d. It's basically a glorified Nintendo 3DS.Last edited by a moderator: May 7, 2015 -

While I don't know how well it'll actually work, the idea of it is a lot cooler IMO than what they're calling "3D" so far.Last edited by a moderator: May 7, 2015 -

Here's a print from GPU-z with the g74: gpu-z
I have a review published on one of my pages but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post it in here, I'm not an expert on gaming laptops and my resources are fairly limited (don't have the tools to measure screen brightness, sounds levels, etc).
So, if you want the link please reply via PM and I'll send it to you.
As for the guys already contacting me via PM, I'm working on those test and will get back.
Thanks
I was also asked to see if this one goes into throttling like the g73Sw did in this topic: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...468-g73sw-cpu-throttling-prime95-furmark.html
Ran prime95+Furmark for 10 minutes and I haven't seen any problem. Here's a print screen to prove it: http://www.gamingrig.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/strestest.jpg
Temperatures seem to stabilize at around 64-65 based on that graph. I cannot however run it for longer without asking permissions from Asus. This is a test model and might still have different issues so I can't risk over-stressing it. That's all I could do right now.
Update: Reran the test to check CPU frequency and it indeed throttles: http://www.gamingrig.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/strestest2.jpg. That does not seem to be a temperature problem though, so I'll go ahead and ask the guys at Asus if they have any explanation or anything to comment on this aspect. Still, looks this problem was not addressed on the G74. Thanks @dkillone for helping with this test.
One more thing: this screen requires stereoscopic 3d glasses. Asus actually displayed some glass-free 3D display on that N53. The clip posted above by one of you guys is actually from my channel and was shot by a close friends of mine at ComputexTalk about a small world
He said that screen was not as bad as the other glass-free 3d displays he saw in the past, but it provided shallow depth, unlike what you get on stereoscopic screens. -
Can anyone suggest me some good reliable stores in california from where I can get my new asus laptop? I want to escape paying the straight $130-150 tax from other vendors..
-
-
MicroCenter (if they're out there) -
The G73 is completely discontinue at Best Buy. I check today and behold, the G74SX-BBK7 was in our inventory system. not only that, we also have 2 in transit Inbound to our store. So, we could have it on display by next week at my store. -
Wow, that's amazingly fast.
-
-
-
If the models have arrived at your best buy store, then does that mean that it should have arrived at every best buy store in US?
I want to know about the best buy stores in california and which area is the best buy store you working at? -
Gimped or no?
-
-
I tried...no luck. I think I'll go for amazon then -
Best Buy is officially selling the G74 I'll Post spec and benchmark soon.
-
-
Yesterday I saw that Best Buy raised the price on the G73 by $100 on their website and now today it's not even on the website. I'd like to see more info and pricing on the G74, it's be the laptop for me to get this summer if >1.35k.
