don't buy! this model(italy) have a defective screen, i had 2 of those, both defective, and other poeple confirmed the issue with this italy model. Try to buy gl703vm that not suffer from this problem, you can find it on amazon at about 1400-1500

Out of all the models, this listing has to be in the running for most bang for buck out of all of them. If you are okay with the size of the two different drives, I don't really see why you wouldn't. Size of drives and or GPU would be reasons to buy up from this one.

Is there some consistencies with the panel? Is the panel the same model across all of these units? Besides the 144Hz version anyway.

How bad is the heat and can it be tamed with a repaste?

I got a bad panel on the VM version. If it's good, you'll love it. I ended up getting the VS version and it's really good too. In my researcch, the heat solution is different for the VM and VS models compared to the VD models etc. I've run both VM and VS and the highest temps I've seen were in the VS model playing AC Unity for several hours and that was low 80's (82 and 84 degrees). Best Buy has a pretty liberal return policy, so if for any reason you're not happy, send it back.

What was bad on your VM model panel? Was is just a bad panel or was the panel a completely different model versus the VS solution you currently have?

There was a clouding issue and determined it was either damaged at the factory or by delivery. Still loved the display and probably wouldn't have minded if I did not buy the laptop to do equal parts photo editing. That said, my issues were man made. Amazon, ASUS and I all agreed on that.

I have a BB about 20 miles away that has this in stock. I'll likely run up there tomorrow and pick one up.

Hello i have a few questions:

    1) Are VM and VS versions the same weight and same thickness (height?)

    2) Does VS have a bigger adapter?

    3) Is VS louder during idling?

    4) Can you manually set the fan in VS version?

    Thanks

    Yes to all.

The VS adapter is much bigger and does not have the word "ASUS" on it.

I don't know that there is any significant difference in idling. Because of G-Sync, there is no chance of anything like optimus etc. on the VS model. In both cases, it takes something like streaming HD video or multiple browsers to get a rise out of either, if at all. (I don't let Steam automatically start at boot up.)

I did not have both together for very long, but not enough difference to be noticeable. You can use ROG Gaming Center app to manually adjust fans, including F5 button on keyboard.

    Hope that helps!

    Are they the same thickness?

Thanks a lot btw. Do you know a way to manually control the fans in VM?

They are the same thickness, but to me, the VS feels and looks thinner due to the lid being all metal. Even side by side, it was deceptive and had me double checking.

To be honest, I returned the VM before I started working with things like fan speed etc. The systems are different because they both don't use G-Sync etc. Minimally, though, you should have the fan boost option in the ROG Gaming Center App and shortcut key on Keyboard, with the VM model. There are supposedly third party apps with more control that can be used, but I don't have the VM to use anymore to validate that. Apologies.

Nah, even HWMonitor cannot detect the fan speed of VM model. I tried to create a Notebook FanControl profile for hours but didnt work. The laptop is extremely loud during gaming. And you cannot set the speed.

Guy's i finded something curious about the screen of mine 703vm. My pc use an AU Optronics B173HAN01.1, that basically is the same as the one mounted by rog gl702vi (3000 euro's), as you can fine here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-ROG-Strix-GL702VI-i7-7700HQ-GTX-1080-Laptop-Review.281912.0.html

now, what's the strange thing? in the gl702vi this display is g-sync enabled, and in gl703vm is a normal 120hz non gsync panel. Basically i think that they just disabled gsync via bios or display firmware. This would explain why optimus is not present here (and who knows? maybe even on gl503vm is like this).

I too have a GL703VM with the AUO panels. I guess G-sync is an integration of the laptop display with the GPU which is not present in my laptop. But it does have a 120Hz 5ms response time which might be as good as G-sync when it comes to eliminating screen tearing. They must have got rid of the Intel Graphics because ,we have to agree, Optimus is plain crap. So Asus must have thought it's better to have no iGPU than problems due to iGPU.

I have the 503VM from BB here in the office. I'll dig into it with teardowns and full coverage over the next few weeks.

If there's anything that anyone wants specifically addressed just ask and i'll add it to the list :)

the monitor support gsync, 1060 support gsync, monitor is attached to 1060...so it's evident that asus just disabled it for marketing reason. Personally is not a problem, i lock my games to 60 or 30fps. Actually this screen (the auo that i mentioned) have a 15ms response time as you can read from notebookcheck, and a solid color reproduction. The 5ms one is mounted only on SCAR editions, but a TN with less brightness (290 nits vs 320), worse viewing angles, but a better color reproduction (94% vs 88%, and 72% vs 66%, for rgn and srgb).

My GL503VMF has a 120 hz AUO42ED and a 3 gb 1060 but the specs are the same as the 6 gb card minus the vRAM.

    That's odd, right?

Also, what's the deal with the Live Update. What's the trick to get it to finish the BIOS? 305 Isn't available on their site.

I used this notebook (503VM) for at about 7 days, i have read a lot of pages, expecially tha latest ones, reading lot of comment. I used the nb in office mode, graphic mode (photoshop, illustrator, video editing all at the same time), and gaming (one hour or more session). In my opition, all went very good, no problems at all. It doesnt turn very hot. Lot of you say that the laptop is extremely loud, but i can't understand this complaint, thit is a gaming notebook with high end specs in a small chassis of a 15 size laptop. That's normal, moreover it is better more loud than mode hot. I had for 8 years an Asus Rog G73GH, 17'' and was quite the same, and it is still alive and usable after 8 years.

There is really no one that thinks this is a very good laptop? If you need a 15 inches with lot of power, at this price i think this is one of the best choices.

Its unnecessarily 65 decibells. HP Omen 1060 is only 55 decibells at its peak. Thats twice as loud.

i had 503vm and now i have 703vm...both laptop are just amazing in terms of design (finally a good design with this high spec), and amazing screen quality...i love this pc but...BUT:

-audio is not the best, is loud but lack of precision, a bit washed out, not the best, even my old k550jx had a better audio in tems of clarity
-gl503vm in italy is defective, screen is just faulty (banding problem and incorrect bpc mode)
-keyboard seems not too solid, my 2nd 503vm had bad spacebar feedback, my first 703vm had spacebar broken, i've read others claiming that many keys stop working... fortunatly on my actual 703vm seems working (the 4 unit after 2 503vm and another 703vm)
-the sata ssd included (hynix) is not the best even for sata models (but actually is a good mlc ssd, even if not the best)
-cpu peak high under load with temps on very heavy games, the solutions for me are quite easy, lift up the laptop for about 5cm, and disable turbo boost... fps are pretty much the same, but with this temps reach 75 degrees max instead of 90ish...

another hint...i will prefer aluminium instead of plastic for palmrest, is not a problem actually, because is a nice plastic with a good feeling, but i just prefer aluminium on 1500 euro's pc.

For me fan are not a problem, i prefer a loud cool laptop instead of a hot one... anyway olly in games this pc turns quite loud, and sometimes 2-3 seconds during other programs...

I agree with you. I also have a 503VM Hero version and this is the best gaming workstation on the market right now. It can handle everything I threw at, while giving me the best 1080p display possible. This is so much better than spending money on a Dell XPS 15 or even worse, an overpriced Macbook Pro 15".

Color reproduction on a TN panel does not mean anything. TN is still crap. I will take any IPS over any TN, any day.

Besides, you should know that the Hero version of the GL503 uses the same IPS panel as the GX501 Zephyrus, made by AU Optronics, with at least 9x% sRGB and 120Hz refresh rate - pure color goodness and display smoothness. A ~1000USD laptop with this kind of incredible screen must have been impossible a few years back.

I've just formatted my VS, but the GPU doesn't work as it should yet.

    I will use the warranty, I can't have a GPU that performs like a 1050 once I paid for having a 1070

What about the CPU? Are you running some sort of turbo off or battery saving setting? I'm sure you're not but i'm trying to wrap my head around these results.

It's not like these just run at half speed. They either work, throttle in some way (still performing well beyond your results) or they don't work at all. I'm very interested in what's up with yours!

No, the maximum CPU usage in the control panel of Windows is 100%, in the Nvidia control panel the setting of "power managment" in the "Manage 3D setting" section is set on "performance".

The strange thing is that the PC works very well, always Userbenchmark gave me great results on the CPU.

I've tried everything I read on internet, in the games I used window without borders mode, G Sync On, G Sync off, trust me I've tried everything.

Thank you for your interest, else if I'm desperate by now :(

Have you found any solution to this problem? I also repasted with liquid metal and I'm getting temps in the 60-70 degrees while gaming (I have the 1060 version). The fans also went quieter after the repaste though they're still too loud in my opinion. I would rather have them run 10 degrees hotter with less noise tbh.

    Hi guys.

For those who have GL503VS (Nvidia 1070), I would want to ask you if you can try to execute the 3rd test of RealBench (v 2.56). It tests only the GPU, it is the OpenCL tick, and if you can write here your result.
