Hi again. This is the 17 inch version with the 120 hz panel and it sells for a 100 dollars more. Based on this, could the 15 inch come with the 120 Hz panel . Is this possible? ThanksKevin@GenTechPC likes this. -

A) It depends on how long the laptop has been running. (laptop temperature)
B) What the computer wants to process first when you startup the computer (it's random if you look at your task manager percentiles of graphic card busyness)
So it's virtually impossible to judge whether your system has gotten cooler. Because you would need to replicate the identical conditions. But you can't, unless you will control the priority processes for the 3d card upon startup + you will cool the laptop every time to an identical starting temperature to 'measure the difference in paste application' . I.e. whether the paste made any difference compared to how the previous paste performed.
All I can tell is the noise is the same in my machine, no matter how much paste I applied. -
Was at Microcenter this afternoon and looked at the Asus GL503 with 1070 and 144hz panel and WOW!! I was super impressed with overall quality and size of this unit. Very slim/sleek and sexy. The panel at 144hz was decently bright and super super smooth. I was expecting since it was IPS it to be very slow/sluggist on response time and nope. This screen had super fluid movement, no ghosting and felt very low reponse time. I managed to overclock the screen to 156hz while nobody was looking! 156hz! They didn't have any in stock but I was super tempted to offer to buy the floor unit at a discount. They had it for $1699 and I have to admit I would have been tempted to purchase it if been in stock.

guys... a usb-c powerbank can charge this laptop via usb-c port?
for me it will be a GREAT thing when not at home... -

liquid metal is just awesome...but i will not use it on future repaste in my gl703vm...i will use just the best non-conductive thermal paste, aka thermal grizzly kryonaut. A guy used to repaste his gl503vm and temp before and after was:
95 cpu to 85/86
86 gpu to 73
For now i don't need repaste, because i use my rog on a uplifted plan that gave me stable 72-75 on cpu while gaming and 69-70 on gpu. In summer i will buy a cooler to mantein it on decent temps...next year> kryounaut is the way.
Liquid metal is good on short term but many people with rog gl502 used it and after 8-9 month the heatsink a bit corrupted (not so much) and onestly i would't risk it even if temp are much better. Plus the risk of going out of heatsink burning motherboard (the tape is just a bad protection) -
Philosophically speaking, wouldn't major computer manufacturers know better than the average teen or adult. They create the machines. They have qualifications and they know what they are doing, while the masses are generally uneducated. I mean how many people actually know how the laptop manufacturing process works and the theory behind the materials and the physics... It's not like Asus is a budget brand either.
The way I see it the engineering is just poor on the GL503V. The same number of fans and the graphic card you can find on the Lenovo Y series, and they manage to make that notebook much more stable and quieter, at the cost of the screen quality. -
WOW guys massive update of driver on gl703 page...use the new page of gl703GE
new audio driver, new gaming center (little changes), new uwp aura apps (massive bug fix), new sonic studio version (seems louder on headphones), new touchpad drver (bug fix)
Every tested and working...SPY1 likes this. -

awesome machines...i love my 703vm...shame for the little problems(fingerprint magnet, cracking speaker on some frequencies, spacebar mushy and noisy and bad battery life.
Anyway i don't understand why other laptop from asus, such as fx503 with i7 and 1060 and the same 64wh battery, last longer than the gl503vm (4 and half hour of browsing life vs almost 3). Fx doesnt have optimus too.
But in other area this pc is just a beast: awesome screen (on 703vm italy model is the same panel from AUO as rog chimera that double the price), awesome performance, only 2cm, awesome finish on metal lid, nice key travel and lightning -

Good Morning.
I would like to ask your thoughts
I am planning to buy laptop
I am torn between of these two laptops
i like gl503 portability i know but im not sure if is there any overheating issue
i like the g752 because of the thermal design but its big and heavy.
may be if the gl503 no overheating issue may be i will get the gl503vm i need your honest thoughts
mainly use gaming AAA Games and Dota 2, Mobile legend.

Good day friends.
I am Trying to decided between the GL503VM, the Dell 7577, and the Lenovo Flex 5.
I wanted the Gl503 because it has a good screen, size and weight 5 pounds. However every review says it is very loud. I keep my headphones at a lower volume so I don't think that will fix the issue for me. So I wanted to know if undervolting the laptop will keep it cool?
I wanted the laptop for photo editing. The only games I am interested in are indie games, Battlezone Combat Commander, and Minecraft with Shaders. I am considering weight as a decision making factor due to the fact that I may move to a walking city.
I was looking at the Dell 7577 because it runs cooler and is considerably less noisy, but it weighs 6lbs.
The Flex 5 was something I was looking at because it was a reasonably priced all around laptop.

Hi there.
I can't find GL503VM compatible ROG Aura Core anywhere. Is there one? This dumb default rainbow colors is impossible to work with.
And you guys know how to unlock Intel 630 Integrated GPU? Mine only uses GTX 1060 and can not find Intel GPU anywhere in device manager.
Thanks. -
About intel hd...display is directly attached to 1060 because of gsync panel (i think that asus disabled gsync via bios... bastards), so no way to turn on intel hd for now.
Maybe if someone mod bios can tell us about gsync or optimusMilad Mokhtari likes this. -
What is the point of not having Intel GPU when there is also no G-sync? Freaking idiots.
And about Aura Core, the one in Microsoft Store is not GL503 compatible I think, I mean the keyboard layout it shows is completely different and you can only adjust brightness, colors won't change whatsoever. I also tried 1.0.4 version, its layout is kinda similar but it's not working either. -
About intel...well...i confirm the madness to remove optimus from asus, really don't understand this bullsh1t; with optimus this rog should last about 5-6 hours with the good 64wh battery... i think that they are forced to disable optimus cause of screen that is gsync monitor (with gsync forced off on firmware)...Milad Mokhtari likes this. -
However I can't change the color of ROG logo on the back of the display (it's always red). Is there anyway to change that?
Thanks. -

Hi guys,
I am hesitant between GL502VM and GL503VM. I am planning to get one of these in about 6 months or so.
Both have interesting specs, that suit me. In short, I want about 40+ fps in 1080p at ultra settings in AC: Origins (and all previous ones), Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Also I want a very portable laptop, lightweight and thin (more or less).
Having the same i7-7700HQ and GTX 1060, they differ as following:
GL502VM vs GL503VM:
Old cooling system vs new cooling system (with vent holes right below fans on the bottom panel)
Red keyboard backlight vs RGB keyboard backlight (I essentially need white for better clarity)
Lighter 2.2 kg (?) vs heavier 2.3 kg (?)
Not sure if reviewer's scales are good, but I found many different numbers for both of these laptops. Can please someone tell me the exact weight?
G-Sync 60 Hz vs No G-Sync 60 Hz
I didn't have a G-Sync before, so I am not really sure whether I'll miss it. I saw G-Sync 144 Hz on a desktop with GTX 1080 with most of FPS being 100+ at ultra settings, and it looks very nice.
However GTX 1060, as far as I observed on YouTube, goes well beyond 60 FPS for games I mentioned above. So G-Sync after 60 FPS is mostly (?) useless?
After 60 FPS Nvidia Fast Sync kicks in, right? Both 502/503 have it enabled, since they both lack Optimus.
Battery life?
How about battery life? I need about 4-5 hours with web browsing and MS Word/LaTeX. Is it possible to undervolt/underclock GTX 1060 to get such battery life?
I read all pages in this thread before, but I am sorry if this set of questions looks repetitive. Just wanted to hear you input.
Thank you guys in advance!
P.S. I know I ask about barely possible things, but I want moderate battery life and no optimus due to complexity and some difficulties. Examples are given here.Last edited by a moderator: Apr 6, 2018 -
wait the new gl503 with i7 8750h that is much better cpu. Anyway if battery life is important, no, don't buy...those pc last about 2 and half, max 3 hours with very light use. You have to buy a laptop with optimus, such as msi gs series for example (the new GS65 have a 82wh battery and optimus, last about 6 hours with a 1060-1070 for other tasks) -
I think for my tasks 7th gen is fine. I'll consider 8th gen only if it brings improvement in battery life.
Also, I added to my post above that would like to avoid Optimus due to TDP overhead on CPU and unnecessary channeling of all graphics data through iGPU first even on dGPU mode (no FastSync as well).hmscott likes this. -

The main thing he missed is that the iGPU steals power and thermal headroom from the CPU.
This was a tragedy discovered when Asus added Optimus to a generation of the G750 series - the GTX8xx series - and Asus even advertised a huge improvement in the GPU cooling hardware - but Asus didn't realize the iGPU was going to add another 10c+ heat output to the CPU, causing heavy rendering on the dGPU to cause the CPU to thermal throttle, even with undervolting!, it was very disappointing.
We had the previous generations of the G750 with the same Haswell CPU benchmarks without the iGPU connected or enabled, so we had lots of test results to compare to the new models with iGPU enabled, and they exhibited 10c+ higher CPU temps for the same benchmarks.
Another annoying Optimus "feature", even at idle the iGPU adds extra thermal load from the always on iGPU, the CPU fan kept kicking in and out - oscillating slowly over time - it drove people crazy.
Asus put out the next generation of ROG laptops without Optimus, except for the lowest GPU model, for those that wanted longer battery life - with disastrous results - most people had the other Optimus issues in spades - it wouldn't switch to dGPU reliably. Asus had dGPU-only releases for a while after that
Ah, yeah, the other little gotcha:
Optimus iGPU is the *only* GPU rendering engine that Windows uses, even if you have a high end dGPU available, Windows won't use it.
If your laptop uses Optimus instead of a MUX - Windows can't switch Graphics domains - so you are stuck rendering everything in Windows GUI / Explorer / IE / Edge / ? with the iGPU only - which is laggy when the iGPU is tasked beyond it's means - which is often.
Anyway, Optimus has bad JuJu. It's best to get a dGPU only laptop, or one with a MUX, and then get a nice 2in1 light carry laptop for long battery life use.

For those that ask about the GL503VS.
It simply disappeared from Asus website approximately at the beginning of 2018.
Furthermore, in the support section, GL503VS is the only computer that hasn't any picture of preview.
The BIOS is still the 300 version, while if I remember all the other GL503 and GL703 have the 304 (and the picture of preview in their respective pages).fayth likes this. -

"The SCAR, on the other hand, comes with a choice of three 17.3-inch and a 15.6-inch monitor - three TN panels and an “IPS-level” panel, all with FHD resolution. The TN panels sport a 120 Hz refresh rate, 3ms GTG response time, and 94% NTSC color gamut. The fourth option is an “IPS-level” panel with 144 Hz refresh rate, 3ms GTG response time, 72% NTSC color gamut coverage and is G-Sync enabled. The SCAR supports up to a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070, a more capable graphics solution able to utilize the high refresh rate monitors. "
MSI / Aorus have such choices in the thin category, but research carefully, there are more Max-Q 1070's this season... sigh.
I don't think Asus considers the Zephyrus mainstream, so Asus should come out with other models.
Remember the higher the FPS the harder the laptop has to push the CPU and GPU to put out that level of performance, which is going to run hot. If you want high FPS, I'd get a larger frame model with beefier cooling and power.
I recommend a full frame 17" model for serious power gaming, not a slim carry laptop, save that for a light 2in1 format non-gaming model. -
Between that and it having a bigger battery and a triple fan design, it looks like it might be a pretty tangible upgrade, even if you do have to move to a 17" form factor. Plus 6.5 lbs isn't that bad to carry around. Also force might not be the best term. Gently prod them towards a thinner and more expensive model if they want a 15" 1070? -
Does GL503VM Traditional (neither Hero, nor Strix) have anti-dust cooling?
Like one from Amazon. -
Anyone got there GL503 to sync with other Aura Devices? I have RoG Gladius II which uses either Aura or Armoury for lights. The keyboard only uses aura core, and can't be detected by the others.
Any ideas? -
Also the fan overboost button does nothing i can notice, something comes up on screen but I've never heard the fans change in relation to it.
-
The new zephyrus gm501 also have a new "silent" fan mode, i hope that asus push this mode on future bios on our machines, because should be pretty usefull on silent scenario... -
Question about GL503VM-BI7N13 (BestBuy model):
Is there any problems setting all-Ultra in games? It has only 3GB of VRAM, instead of 6GB.
E.g. in The Rise of Tomb Raider, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, AC Origins. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
VRAM size usually sees more impact on higher resolution but it should be fine with 1080p, however the GPU isn't that fast as it's a GTX 1060 so all ultra may be an issue.
