The bestbuy traditional version (GL503VM-BI7N13) seems to be a bestbuy specific model. Area where the keyboard is is a rubbery matte black look. Also comes with a G sync 120 Hz screen with hardware ID AUO42ED. So far no thunderbolt 3 either. Will post screens when I get home.

EDIT: posted some pictures. Sorry, kinda low quality since my camera kinda ****ty.

oh man. Rubbery material is not good. It scratches and discolors, and I once had a rubber-coated portable speaker become sticky as the rubbery material failed. Rubbery material doesn't like oils and degrades over time.
According to google, a bunch of other people have had rubber finish failures on their various brands of laptop.

At least it has gsync, unlike that kitguru review.
Also, the AUO42ED appears to be the same 120hz IPS panel in the Zephyrus

Load up hwinfo64 and see what battery WHr capacity is

as for the rubber material plastic, i believe this is only a bestbuy specific feature. The product description said "soft-black" as color/material.

So I asked ExcaliberPC team if VM and VS series came with a different cooling system than VD, and they answered:
No, I don't think it is the exact same system; in the past the VM and VS used different motherboards; they have different specs.

Lets just wait and see then....

You have no idea what you are talking about. Check MSI thread. People push it past 7 hours of use.

Well I based my opinions on my personal experience, so this is not just a "no idea what im talking about comment." I bought a MSI PRESTIGE PE62VR back in August..and it barely last 2 hours on regular use and I had to return it. Again, this was based on normal use via web browsing, chatting with friends on discord and etc. I did not test this with gaming but i didn't plan to game on battery mode anyways. Well, I could potentially undervolt the CPU to lower power consumption, but eh, I did not attempt to do so.

The prestige series has the same battery, with same CPU and gtx 1060 instead of a gtx 1070. No idea what they changed in their gaming series in terms of battery performance but the prestige series was meh. I had a 500 gb m.2 ssd and a 1 tb standard 7200 RPM hdd installed in that system. I wanted to give that laptop a chance but after using it for about 10 days I decided to return it. But hey maybe they figured out how to have better power management in the gaming version despite using stronger hardware. I do have to give props to MSI for all those heatpipes in that machine, wish Asus did the same.

    @Mr. H
Glad that your laptop is lasting 3 hours. That is very good news. I did not expect it to get that much battery time. I would consider the laptop but idk if I want to spend 1799 for a laptop. If I did want to spend that kind of money, I'd probably go with the Gigabyte Aero 15, that machine has 8 hours of battery run time and more business appropriate. The 1070 is great but I don't think I need that kind of hardware since my desktop is still my go to machine, where as the laptop is just for when I am not at home.

Right now I am waiting for the GL703VM-WB71 (traditional version) to be available since I still want an IPS screen laptop not a TN version from the scar edition. I am hoping the 64 WHR from this laptop would provide better battery life even though I am a little disappointed that they did not keep the 74 WHR battery from the GL702VM model. Maybe we can jury rigged the system somehow and squeeze the 74 WHR battery from the 702VM into the 703VM.

that would not be worth the cost. and probably won't fit.

with optimus, the 64whr battery will give you almost double battery life compared to gsync.

    Hey Guys!

I am waiting for ASUS STRIX GL503VM SCAR edition 15.6 laptop. Xotic PC guys informed me that currently there is only HERO in 15.6 and SCAR in 17-inch models available from ASUS. Can you please let me know if there would be any 15.6 model in SCAR?

    Hi !!
I pre ordered the HERO edition GL503VM-DB74 (15.6) from XoticPC; today I received a mail literally telling me:
"We are still waiting on an ETA from the manufacturer. We will update you as we find out more information."

I am expecting that by around November 10th (this date is an estimate bases on amazon, ExcaliberPC, new egg and XoticPC arrival dates) they will have it on their warehouse.

I think the SCAR edition (GL503VS) will be arriving their warehouses around the same date.

Nice , i just ordered the GL703VM-WB71 from HIDevolution today as well. They gave me a slightly better deal than XoticPC (discount for being part of NBR forums). XoticPC is good too (very nice and friendly), but so far I like the rep who worked with me at HIDevolution. They provided me better answers when I asked them questions versus XoticPC who would always tell me "We will contact ASUS, and get back to you." In reality, they never really "got back " to me. Anyways, best of luck to the both of us.

3 heatpipes, but still shared between cpu and gpu. Not as good as separate pipes.

they probably did a last minute change and try to squeeze in the 3rd heatpipe without changing the overall dimension and location of the cpu and gpu too much.

it looks like ASUS also changed the overall weight specification of the GL503 and GL703 to 5.5 lbs and 6.7 lbs now instead of 5 lbs and 6lb. (Probably because of the new heat pipes adding weight to the device.)

I meant more, profitable referring to a good gaming device, better material quality, good warranty, etc etc.
I don't even play LOL !! most of all DOTA and adventure games!! and I am no fan of any professional player. I just want a well built (good material quality) laptop that can endure gaming; doing some research I selected this model; nevertheless I am very interested on opinions as my Laptop has not yet being delivered,(XoticPC does even have the device on their warehouse) maybe I can change it, for something else.
    Thank you !

Ahhh! So that's what you meant by saying profitable. I was thinking about total sale LOL My bad, mate. Overall, that is a elegant gaming laptop, which I planned to buy at first but then had to settle with Msi because I needed a gaming laptop at the moment (to practice for my school's gaming tournament back in August or September sth). There is a Bestbuy nearby my house that has the GL503VM Traditional, but they didn't let me perform any temp tests on the CPU and GPU, so rip.

I went to BB yesterday and played with their rubbercoated 503, but I didn't have my linux usb with me, so I couldn't hack it and install anything.

But if you know a little linux, make a live cd usb, put chntpw on it, and load chntpw from the usb after booting into linux to reset and enable the windows admin account. Then load up whatever benchmarking tools you have on the usb.

Honestly, the 503vm didn't interest me much, as I have the 502vm already

dave2d said his review unit did not have gsync, and only got 2.5 hours battery life.

I'm assuming no gsync means it has Optimus? If so, 2.5 hours SUCKS on a 64whr battery

I wonder if he made a mistake on the battery life on his review unit (that machine had a 1050). I cannot believe the Zephyrus with 51whr and 1080 max-q has the same battery life as the GL503 with 1050 and 64whr!
I think the G-sync is only available on the 1070 aka VS versions (same as TB3 etc). So Optimus should be there.

Question for the American citizens! If you guys normally order a notebook on ExcaliburPc or XoticPC, is the price stated at a model the final price? Or will VAT be added later in the process? What's the VAT over there? :) (I'm dying to test out the GL503VS with the 1070 since there is still no review on that machine!)

There's no VAT in the US. There is only state-based sales tax, but so long a buyer doesn't reside in the state in which the seller is based, the seller doesn't charge sales tax. So ExcaliburPc or XoticPC only charge sales tax to buyers located in the same state their companies are based in, and for buyers in all other 49 states, no sales tax is charged. Thus for most of us, the model price shown is the final price.

I received my GL703VM-WB71 this saturday. Thermals seems fine so far. I haven't done long periods of stress testing yet, but I did ran AID64 test for about 2 mins. Temps of GPU went to about 74, and CPU went to about 71 ish during FPU testing. I had HIDevolution add thermal paste for me.

Also, installed my own SSD. Fans do get loud though under stress testing. Build quality is great, the laptop is way thinner than i expected compared the the 702VM version. I have not had the chance to try undervolting yet. So far seems like there is no Nvidia Optimus. But I am getting about 3 hours of battery life on normal use if I set the brightness down to about 33% and have powersaver on. I did not attempt to take off the entire base since Dave2d said it was difficult to remove but I can ask HIDevolution to see if they can send me a video tutorial on removing the bottom cover.

Just to help out the community, remember to go to C:\edrivers to back up those into an external HDD. I am not sure if my original windows install has that or not. The ASUS website does not have all the software listed such as Sonic Suite/Sonic Radar. The Gamersvisual (SplendidVideo) listed does not work either, and no ROG aura core listed either. I had to go to Bestbuy, and copy their software files from the GL503 on display because I did not know about this.

If you guys have any questions let me know, I will test it out for you when I get home.

nope it does not, nor does it have optimus, which kinda saddens me, but overall laptop is very good.

EDIT: Just ran an FPU test with prime95 26.6, cpu temp capped out at 77 deg.

Ran heaven benchmark for gpu and temps capped out at 82 deg.

Fans are pretty loud at around 47-53 dBA.

Ran both test for 10 mins.

Device manager doesn't show Intel GPU either eh?

    what an oversight.
Maybe you can email asus R&D, software engineers, bios team, and ask them why the fark they didn't add gsync to the 17" version like they did with the 15" version.

would you mind to test in gaming temperature like overwatch, the witcher 3 and PUBG, 1 hour each game and please do it with normal fan profile and overboost fan mode.

    thanks in advance.

Is it the first of its kind (144hz gsync on 15.6)? And any reviews available yet?

And it's IPS rather than high-quality-TN. I wonder if they've made an effort to give it relatively good response times.
